The 25 Best Maui Restaurants, According to a Local Expert | Eater

"After the 2023 fire destroyed Sale Pepe, the beloved Italian bistro where local chefs ate on their days off, the restaurant’s owners, Qiana and Michele di Bari, pledged to rebuild. Through sheer will and aloha, they succeeded. The new Sale Pepe, up the hill from the old one, announces itself with marquee lights. The di Baris gave the industrial space a full makeover, cleverly tucking a pasta lab between the first and second floor. Start your meal with a Campari spritz, and you might just think you’re in Milan, Michele’s hometown. The bianca pizza, topped with sausage made in-house from Malama Farm’s kurobuta pork, is perfect. But it’s the pasta that tugs at the heartstrings: hand-twisted strozzapreti, wide ribbons of pappardelle, and tantalizing spaghetti neri studded with fresh clams and smears of spicy Calabrian ’nduja. Upstairs, lights on the ceiling spell out “Lahaina Per Sempre,” or Lahaina Forever. Know before you go: The outdoor seating is alcohol-free, so book an indoor table if you want to imbibe." - Shannon Wianecki

The 22 Best Restaurants In Maui 2024

"You’ll need reservations to get into the lively and always-crowded Sale Pepe, which is in the strip mall side of Lahaina and has the best Italian food on the island. Share the prosciutto and fior di latte pizza, and always get a couple of the housemade pastas, like the strozzapreti with beef cheek ragu or squid ink spaghetti with local shrimp and spicy ‘nduja. First time at Sale Pepe. It's been open 110 days since the fires destroyed its original location. We got various dishes to share between 4 of us. We were seated upstairs. Cass was our waitress. Very friendly, good service. Food was great - nice to have delicious Italian in Maui.

I visited all four major Hawaiian islands and was always looking for a real Italian restaurant. Until now, the Italian places in Hawaii were always American-style. After spending several months in Hawaii, especially on Oahu, I can finally say that I’ve found an Italian restaurant where the pizza and tiramisu taste just like in Italy. Big compliments! I will come back to try the pasta as well.

Google
Mix review on this restaurant. Monday night and we were sat around 30 minutes after walking up. Quickly ordered and some of the food came out. Salad was good, and the rice balls were delicious. But the waiter forgot about our drink, when she brought it over the ice was melted in the cup but she opened the bottle and poured it anyways, Causing it to be watered down. Then for some reason they turned on super loud music on the patio halfway through our meal which was odd. But fine. Then we waited for our pizza… and waited. And waited… it took around 40 minutes after we finished the appetizers. She said the pizza station was backed up but other tables got them just fine. I think she forgot to ring it in. Anyways the sausage on it was super lack luster but the crust was good. I think we’d come back for the food the service just sucked.

Google
5 stars all around. We had three dishes and each were magnificent. The pizza artist, Kaili, is unequivocally the best we have seen. Duncan was very knowledgeable and attentive. The best part was taking a tour upstairs and watching the pasta maker working her magic. They make all of their ingredients on site and the flavor explodes with each bite. Do not miss this experience!

Google
Ambiance-We went her as a family of 4 with kids. We got there right when they opened and made reservations. They sat us down right away. The owner was letting us in. There was soft music playing and place had only been open for the last 72 days. There were two stories, with indoor and outdoor dining available and we were sitting inside. They didn’t ask us what we preferred when we made reservations. Place was clean. Food- every single food item we got was amazing. You could tell they made fresh to order with really good quality ingredients. We got two classic margaherita pizza to share, gnocchi in sauce, the side of bread, 1 Italian soda each and lemon and vanilla gelato to end the course. They were all delicious. I would recommend all. They don’t have traditional branded beverages like coke or Pepsi. They Italian sodas and no diet options. Customer service- our waitress was nice and felt like they knew the menu inside and out. They were also accommodating with kid friendly modifications. I can see that all staff was working hard and tending to everyone’s needs. Price- it was on the pricey side. We spent $204 on the meal and soft drinks described above for a family of 4. I would highly recommend going to check this place out and I would go again next time we come back to Maui to visit.

Google
We started our meal with some refreshing prosecco. The gnocchi dish was amazing- tasty and not too rich. Overall, this was a wonderful dinner experience with great service, ambiance, and delicious food. This restaurant will be a go-to when visiting the island.

Google
Wow! I wouldn’t normally have Italian in Hawaii as I usually stick to the fresh fish however a few people raved about Sale Pepe and I needed to see what the hype was about. This was one of the best pastas I’ve had in a long time! The meatballs and whipped ricotta were also very nice. The place is also super cute with in door and out door seating and great staff. Make a booking if you can as they are very busy.

Google
We got lucky and were able to place a reservation 30 minutes prior to arriving, and were seated within 5 minutes of the reservation time. Our server Mikaela gave us an incredible overview of the menu, and highlighted the items that catered specifically to our dietary restrictions (vegetarian, eggless). We were blown away by the level of service she and the rest of the staff provided, and by the quality of the food. We were told that the chef uses local produce and meats, but imports many of the seasonings and spices from Italy — and it shows! What’s also incredible is that the restaurant only opened earlier this year. The original location was destroyed by the Lahaina fire, and the new location, though a bit out of the way, feels alive. This was our first time to Maui and to this restaurant. We would definitely come back next time!

Yelp
I got a dinner reservation here over a month in advance because I'd heard great things. We showed up early and they were able to accommodate us and seat us about 15 minutes earlier than our reservation time. We tried some of the wines, which were tasty and averagely priced. Instead of something from the appetizer menu, we got the focaccia to start, which is on the pizza menu. It was a bit underwhelming, as it felt like plain pizza crust that was puffed with a side of olive oil. Still tasted good but pretty plain so I would skip that one next time. I got the gnocchi alla vodka, which is currently on their summer menu. It was absolutely delicious, with a very creamy flavorful vodka sauce and soft puffy gnocchi. It was an average portion size, perfect for one person but not meant for sharing. The pizzas are a bit larger and probably best to be shared family style.

Yelp
We loved our impromptu dinner at sale Pepe! I highly recommend a reservation because there can usually be a wait since this is the only Italian restaurants in town, especially if you want something a little higher scale. We got one of their pizzas and the rigatoni pasta with speck, all delicious. We sat at the bar and enjoyed our time with the bartender who was very friendly.

Yelp
A little Italy in Maui! We stumbled into Sale Pepe after a day at the beach. We didn't have reservations. However the nice hostess was able to have is sit at the bar. Even there it was a good experience. One of our friends had previously recommended this place so we ordered a few of those things recommended. The bartender took our wine orders and food. To start we had the aranchini balls and the salad. Both were delish. We also had a shrimp toast. That was my least fav. The shrimp was a lil under and the texture was off. We also had the mushroom parpadelle pasta and the sopraseta pizza. Pasta was yummy and pizza was great. The only complaint was that the food took a while to come out. However the restaurant and staff were so apologetic and offered us dessert. That was very nice of them and I appreciated the dessert because it was delish. It was toasted marshmallow Gelato and a chocolate mousse cake. Delish! I ordered an espresso martini and it was one of the best I've had. Would definitely recommend if you are in Maui. Must do dinner. Great food and service.

Yelp
This is a must when we are on Maui. I absolutely love everything here. I have been her at least 8 times and have never been disappointed. I talk about this place to everyone I know that is going on vacation to Maui. The employees are all fantastic. They are welcoming and have a warm demeanor. They are quick to offer a suggestion and take food allergies very seriously. I have had every pizza on the menu and love them all. The risotto is fantastic and their fresh pasta is incredible also. The restaurant is clean and has a good view of the pizza oven area. The parking lot is not real big, but we have not had a problem finding a spot.

Yelp
I contemplated writing this review due to the recent devastation, destruction and suffering on Maui and in this case specifically Lahaina due to the wildfires. However, I feel it is important to note how wonderful, inventive and friendly our experience was at Sale Pepe prior to this horrific wildfire. Our server Heidi was beyond helpful with a great attitude and super friendly (genuinely). The food was superb and the pizza would stand up against the greats of New Haven and New York. The unique and inventive toppings were glorious. It is very sad regarding the loss of life and property that Maui is experiencing. However I hope that someday I have the opportunity to support this community and specifically this local business in person. In the meantime, please take an opportunity to research ways to support this community and restaurant.

Yelp
The place is simple and casual, but don't let that fool you, this restaurant is real, on a whole different planet from most hyped tourist destinations. Service was good. They know the menu, they are very courteous (especially our waitress Heidi) and service was prompt. It's safe for kids but equally good for a simple romantic dinner for two, with very reasonable prices considering the quality. We were interested in trying their pizzas. We had just traveled to Italy and we've tried many of the best pizza places in SF, LA, NYC, Brooklyn and Chicago. Frankly we were prepared to be let down. However, our experience was just the opposite, our taste buds were set alight with joy. Literal joy. My wife got the Quattro Stagioni and asked for a side of arugula to go with it. She loved every bite. The stiff enough, but soft crust was worth eating on It's own merits, the sauce, the cheese and the veggies were all amazing. I had the Tomato, Fior di Latte, Salame Calabrese Piccante pizza. As with my wife's experience, the dough was amazing, the sauce perfect, fresh tasting and danced on the tongue. However, the star of the show was the Salame Calabrese Picante. Holy cow, this pizza was excellent to the last bite. I wish I could speak to the pasta, but if they put half the care into their pasta that they put into the pizza, I'm sure it with be terrific. A fantastic dinner that we will definitely repeat in the future.

Yelp
We arrive with no reservation at 6:45 On arrival Jamie greeted us and helped us with the seating.. she was sweet and friendly also accommodating. We got seating around 7:15 pm so I recommend reservations if you are starving cause this place was popping and smelled so delicious.. we ordered the salad and pasta from today's specials so ask your server about that cause these are not on the menu. We stick to a l classic margarita pizza.. my kids loved the food and they are very very picky.. we were so hungry, we inhaled all the food. It was amazing and will defiantly be back again specially for the Nutella focaccia bread. I would definitely like to thank my server Susie who was on point with her recommendations and also very attentive to our needs and explained everything when we were ordering.

Yelp
Nice, popular Italian restaurant tucked away not far from Front Street in Lahaina. Another place in an unassuming strip mall with an industrial type decor inside. Nothing fancy for sure but the food was good. We had reservations (highly recommended) and were seated at a table for 2 in the back section. Service was decent, the food hit the spot. We split the Carbonara which is not on the menu but they will make it for you. Extensive wine menu also.

Yelp
.I've been to Maui 5x so I'm a lil sad that I just discovered this place during this trip Ordered: squid ink pasta, pizza pecorino, chicken liver crostinis and toasted marshmallow gelato. The best part: their shakerato. Boy oh boy, I never imagined loving straight coffee without any milk until trying one. Wait time: had reservations, didn't have to wait Service: excellent Ambiance: casual Price: fair Tip: make reservations, get the shakerato lol WIGBA (would I go back again) yes x10

Yelp
So good we had to go twice! We were able to snag a reservation the morning of. It's not busy enough that i think you NEED a reservation, but it's always nice to skip the (albeit small) line. Everything about our meal was fantastic! I got the lemon basil martini to start, and it was great. Very light and refreshing. I asked our server about a couple of dishes and finally decided on the truffle risotto. It was absolutely one of the best dishes I've ever eaten. Maybe because I love anything with truffle in it. Regardless, I never wanted my meal to end! Finally, we finished with the marshmallow gelato which tasted like a warm and cozy campfire - just delicious! And to top it off, the restaurant itself had such a nice inviting ambiance, and our server was 10/10. As soon as we finished eating we made another reservation to come back in a couple days before our trip ended and we had the exact same delectable experience the second time - we even got the same waitress! The only thing I changed this time was getting the pompelmo spritz instead of the martini. It was good but not as good as the martini. Overall, this was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had and I will probably be dreaming about it for the next few months.

Yelp
I have to thank my son for finding this restaurant. (ish) After incessantly complaining that he wanted fettuccine alfredo, this led me to finding Sale Pepe on Yelp. And Yelpers did not lead me astray! Now, first off, they don't actually have fettuccine alfredo on the menu, but given the amazing reviews I figured they could figure it out. (They did with flying colors!) And the rest of the food was just as amazing. We had the meatballs and crostini to start with lasagna, sausage pizza, "fettuccine alfredo" and the pappardelle. All were top notch. Not like "top notch for Maui" good, but top notch "I lived in the Northeast for 15 years and I would put this place up against any of those" good. An important note - reservations are a must! We did not have them but were there around 4:45 and 2nd in line, no reservations category. (They open at 5PM) We were the last no reservation table sat, all others were turned away. Last but not least, service was fantastic. Even the hostess tasked with turning away people was done in the nicest way. We received great suggestions and guidance for ours and the food came out at an appropriate pace. A fantastic experience - not to be missed!! This place is not to be missed.

Yelp
Go here for some Italian comfort food! Loved the refreshing lemon basil martini that transformed me to the Amalfi coast and truffle pesto pasta! Great portion and price point at $50 with goods imported from Italy!

Yelp
We had a great dinner here tonight! Located in Lahaina, parking was easy since they have a large lot as this sits in a small strip mall area. It's a cute little restaurant and I must say the tables are a little close together but it's such a popular spot so we were just grateful to have a reservation. Make sure to do your reservation way ahead on Resy! When you arrive, they will check for vaccination and then have you scan a QR code for the menu. The food was delicious!! I loved their special of the night which was a mushroom fettuccine. My hubby loved the pizza bianco and my son loved his butter pasta... not to mention their nutella dessert which was also yummy! Definitely worth a stop when in Lahaina!

Yelp
Delicious home made pasta, good service and nice ambiance. The wait time is long without a reservation so call ahead if you can. We ordered two pasta dishes and two salads. Homemade Pasta, spaghetti and meatballs and Kale and Sausage Pasta which was delicious! My husband ordered a Mixed Green Salad which is nice sized and full of tomatoes, carrots, cucumber's and red onion. I ordered the Romaine Salad which was ceasar style with a yummy dressing and shaves of parm....really good! Will definitely return
google avatar

Yelp
Another great meal here! The pastas are freshly made. The flavors of the sauces are awesome, simple yet complex. Our server, Louisa, was super cool and took good care of us. The space is open and we didn't feel crowded. Would recommend coming here for dinner.

Yelp
Better than the reviews you read. Go and experience this marvelous culinary. The couple from Brooklyn and Milan have something very special here. The vibe and the place reminded us of the restaurants in Italy. Enjoy!

Yelp
My wife had made a reservation well in advance for a Friday evening meal to celebrate her birthday. We had no issues being seated because of it--it was packed and there were still people waiting while we were eating. The restaurant had a home-like, rustic feel which we loved. Our server was so kind, professional and knowledgeable of everything on the menu. She was able to answer all of our questions, especially given so many Italian words on the menu. I ended up ordering the "Strozzapreti con Guanciale si Manzo." While it was good, I actually enjoyed eating my wife's pizza which had pancetta and poached egg on it--it was so delicious!! I personally wish I would have ordered a pizza that night, but the pasta was still good! It was a great way to celebrate a birthday, can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Teresa H.

Yelp
If they have the truffle risotto, don't even THINK about passing it by- one of the best things I have ever tasted in my 7 year Yelp elite food snobbery. My husband and I split the carbonara and the risotto with a tiramisu for dessert and all were lovely. Prices were absolutely on par for the quality of food, but do note that the vibes are a bit more casual than I had anticipated based on the menu alone. Absolutely recommend- reservations seemed like a must at least for the weekend!
google avatar

Kathy O.

Yelp
We had never tried Sale Pepe until this evening, even though we knew they were in Lahaina several years ago. It's probably because it does not face the ocean and is located in a strip mall. We were in the mood for Italian food and were reminded of their existence when we read great reviews on Yelp. They make all of their own pasta and also specialize in thin crust pizza. We shared a Caprese salad (photo on the left) and one other appetizer. My entree was Gnocchi Quattro Formaggi (photo on the right below)--it was so yummy! Joe's entree was Squid Ink Spaghetti served with local shrimp and a spicy Calabrian salami paste. He loved it. We'll definitely return on our next visit to Maui.
google avatar

Leems B.

Yelp
5 stars all around. The food is delicious. We had the green salad (it was so good we ordered a second), the buffalo mozzarella pizza - excellent and authentic, the parpadelle porcini (favorite dish), lasagna (2nd favorite dish), carbonara (least favorite but was still excellent). My daughter had the spaghetti marinara - nice portion and perfect for kids. When in Maui and you need a break from poke - this is an excellent choice for authentic Italian food.

Yelp
Oooh lala if you're looking for something other than your typical island food, this is the place. We had Michelle as our server and she was so amazing. Great personality and very attentive. She really cared to get to know our table, talked about the food with a huge smile and even brought me some of their fantastic olives to munch on while waiting! I loved their appetizers, especially the bruschetta! This will be a go too when in Maui! Great food and even better service!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Sale Pepe, we can't quit you. Visiting Hawaii is a rare and special treat, so we try to mix up our restaurant choices when we travel there. Sale Pepe has become a golden exception, and our latest venture was as incredible as I first remembered. Calabrese pizza - don't let the simplicity fool you. Texture of the dough is one of a kind, which I guess goes for all their pizzas, and the salami had a refined, spicy flavor, not your average preserved meat. Kale and Sausage pasta was a triumph of its own. Should have opted for a different wine than the house Montepulciano, but it was still a-okay. Atmosphere, service, everything still top-notch. Italian in Hawaii? You betcha.

Yelp
Best food in Maui! The pizza and crostini were amazing! The drinks were great too! The bartender is very knowledgeable and gives great recommendations!

Yelp
A very authentic Italian restaurant, this place is very popular and reservation is a must. We got seated promptly, and were lucky enough to sit right next to the pizza oven where we were looking at the pizza chef taking pizzas in and out of the oven, it was fun to watch. Arancini Classici: A It's actually my first time having arancini, this fried rice ball dish looks simple to make but I'm sure it's not to make it so perfect, the texture and the sauce was everything, great start of the night. Pizza Bianca: A It tasted exceptional! The meat, veggie and cheese were all perfect, it's a nice balance with the arancini we had, the truffle oil flavor was strong, so good that we almost wanted to order another one. Lasagna: A Perfectly made, the sauce, meat, cheese everything was perfect. No other word to describe, just have to order this classic Italian dish. We were stuffed with just these 3 dishes for 2 people. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the dishes and I could tell how passionate and proud he was to introduce their good food to the customers. Definitely a come back next time around in West Maui.

Yelp
So incredible... really, incredible Italian food. From start to finish this place is a must dine at when in Maui. Service was impeccable, food was delicious and the ambiance was great. The whipped ricotta was so good, the perfect appetizer. We also got the meatballs which were so unbelievably flavorful it was insane. My wife got the lasagna which was excellent and I got the calabrese pizza. The pizza was cooked perfectly, dough was super good and the calabrese was so good and the right amount of spice. Again, super delicious Italian food here on the island of Maui. This place is packed all the time so you need to make a reservation weeks of not months in advance but well worth it.

Yelp
This was an accidental find and so glad we came across it because it was our best meal of the trip. Recommend reservations, we saw people being turned away or a late sitting time. We ordered whipped ricotta - 10/10 get this Prosciutto pizza very good 9/10 (we added arugula) Pasta with speck - such a unique flavor but so good. 9/10 We were here for 2 weeks and needed a switch up from the Hawaiian flavors and fish. Definitely go here on your trip

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were lucky enough to snag a reservation via Resy the day before and thought authentic Italian might be a nice break from the abundance of seafood we've been eating. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant had a parking lot, so we didn't need to stress about where to park. We had snorkeled for four hours so we were particularly hungry. To start, we ordered the mixed green salad and the pizza with spicy salami. The pizza is not overly large and thin crust so it was not overly filling. Authentic Naples-style pizza is my absolute favorite and this pizza hit the mark for me! The pizza is cooked in a brick oven and for mozzarella they either use creamy fior de latte or bufala. Next, my boyfriend ordered the risotto and I ordered the pasta with kale and sausage. They make their pasta in-house, fresh, so I knew I had to try it. The pasta was excellent but the risotto had a fantastic truffle flavor and was extremely rich and decadent. Unfortunately we did not have room for dessert but I would absolutely come back to try our more of the menu. Definitely give this spot a try if you're craving some Italian food!

Yelp
Reviews for this place are spot on, as a lot of the time folks get "beer goggles" when it comes to vacation reviews, whereby people generally happy with mediocre service and food as they are on vay-cay. On with the review, it's truly upscale American Italian. Well executed hand made pastas with a variety of finishes. Their pizzas offer unique combos to delight. The portions are perfect for over indulgence. Loved the lasagne, beef cheek pasta and the pasta with speck and saffron. The only odd thing was the rosemary in the speck pasta, perhaps a miscue from the kitchen. Never the less, the server was a delight. Timing was perfect. Oddly enough we noticed a family portrait in the bar and asked her about it, turns out she was the owner's daughter! Truly a family place that will take care of yours. 4.5 solid stars!

Yelp
Hands down the best pizza and pasta restaurant in Maui. Pizza can match up favorable with the best Neapolitan in the mainland. Perfect crust, amazing cheese (Fiore di latte), tasty toppings

Yelp
Hearing that the owners were from Brooklyn and Italy, I was super looking forward to having some great pizza and pasta. Unfortunately, the food didn't taste as good as they looked, which was a bit disappointing. We started off with the romaine and lemon-parmiggiano vinaigrette salad. For $10, it was a very simple salad with a fresh half head of romaine lettuce with some oil and cheese. Nice flavors, but a bit pricey for what they serve. Strozzapreti Kale and Malama Farms Sausage: The hand-twisted pasta was very delicious and had the perfect chewy texture. Unfortunately, I was a bit surprised by how little flavor there was from the pork sausage and tomato sauce. If there was a bit more fat or cream, I think that it would have helped elevate the flavor profiles. Pizza Bianca: The pizza dough was fantastic and was chewy and light in density. However, similar to the pasta, I was again surprised by how little flavors I got in my mouth despite the delicious ingredient list (sausage, mushrooms, roasted garlic, arugula). Overall, Sale Pepe does do a great job with their pasta and pizza dough. We were told that they get their flour imported from Italy. Although the flavor profiles of the pasta and pizza have a lot of potential from the ingredients they use, the ultimate taste fell a bit flat. Plenty of free parking in the plaza next to the restaurant.

Yelp
Great midrange restaurant for when you are tired of poke and fancy places in Maui. 70 a person including drinks, appetizers and entrees felt like a steal compared to the other restaurants in Maui, and the food was delicious. Recommended if you are in the area. Chicken liver crostini - 4/5. Came with a lot of liver, was good on the bread. Salumi (neck?) - 4/5. Came on a pizza like dough which was good. Branzino special with zucchini pasta - 5/5. Fish had a flaky top and crispy bottom skin and was cooked well. Pasta was a little butter, but great if you smothered it in the lemon caper sauce that it came with. Squid ink spaghetti - 5/5. Pasta had a nice springy texture and you could tell it was freshly made. Good sauce though a tad on the sour side.

Yelp
Attempted to eat here at 5:15, and was told there were "incoming reservations"; however the entire restaurant was open with nobody sitting there. I asked the hostess when we could sit and she told me 8:00. If you don't have reservations then you don't matter here. Definitely not the local spirit we have felt regularly and rude. Pompous is the best way to describe the establishment and I would not recommend for anyone trying to eat and relax.

Yelp
The ABSOLUTE BEST PIZZA I have ever had! And it was VEGAN! I got a pizza with mushrooms olives and no cheese and it was still the best pizza ever! We also got a margarita pizza which was incredible. Definitely the HIGHLIGHT of my Maui trip!

Yelp
We liked our visit so much the last time that we tried to go back again tonight. Sadly, we could not get seated, no surprise - very glad for them. We like Sale Pepe so much that we've recommended it to a lot of people and also bought a $200 gift card for friend's birthday. I am in the industry and I have never taxed gift card purchases. I was very very disappointed and upset that we are being taxed on the $200 gift card purchase and incensed that our friend will be taxed on his use of this same gift card! Absurd, sketchy and I would dare say, illegal? The poor hostess did try to explain a way out of it - stating that the POS system is unable to not charge sales tax? That's unacceptable - to be taxed on initial purchase of a gift card and taxed on use of gift card, wow! I actually wanted to go and return the gift card because it's bothering me so much. But, I'm hoping that they will find a way to fix this problem because they should - and will return, to see if they have resolved this. And not return, if they did not.

Yelp
3.5 stars. Could have been 4 stars. Very good food, very good service via Michele our stellar server. Only real problems were a slow kitchen, and I mean slow. A salad and two entrees, an hour 45 minutes for a pizza and salad. Almost 30 minutes from order to salad and longer for salad to entree. I had previously reviewed the venue and blasted because not only did they not answer the phone, but did not return calls. I tried again understanding that Hawaii is an employee desert. No joy. The dining rooms ran well but slow due to a lack of a bartender. People are leaving their jobs left and right so I get it. As a bakery owner with two locations I get it. Would I return? Of course. Very good food, good service, steep Hawaii prices.

Yelp
The food here is really something special. Ambiance wise- it has a great vibe & the service their is extremely friendly & helpful. Our waiter was attentive & had great recs for vegetarians. My favorite item from our dinner was the sheep cheese platter. It might have been one of the best cheese's I've tasted, and the flatbread was wonderful as well. Filette, the sparkling water suggestion from the waiter, was one of the best i ever had- it was extra carbonated and had the perfect mineral balance. The mushroom pizza was good but i think Honu seafood has better pizza overall. The olives tasted fresh & not marinated, which was unique.

Yelp
We had Rigatoni con Sugo and pizza bianca-salsiccia, funghi, aglio arrostiti, arucola. Just thought it was OK. Pizza was a bit bland. Pasta had lots of meat but not much flavor.

Yelp
Rigatoni con Speck, Funghi e Zafferano was so good. We shared and couldn't stop eating it. Definitely recommend that dish. We also split the romaine and lemon-parmigiano vinaigrette salad but next time would order one for each of us. Pizza Bianca was a good size for splitting and overall tasty but the sausage had a slightly off taste. They brought a candle in our tiramisu dessert (would try a diff dessert next time). Service was ok...we felt ignored for pockets of time but other than that had a great experience.

Yelp
You haven't had real Italian food until you've been to @salepepemaui - this is hands down the best Italian food I've ever had. Hand made pasta topped off with shaved black truffle, crispy thin pizza with prosciutto/olives/mushrooms, aranchini with perfectly cooked risotto and a crispy outer shell, creamy variety of cheese. Say no more, this place is amazing. Service was also great! FYI the truffle fettuccini was a special, it does change so always check before you go but anything here will be delicious!!

Yelp
Sale Pepe surpassed my expectations. Noted that they did not have their pizza thing working so we weren't able to try their pizza, but the experience was still great. Romaine and lemon salad 10/10 Chicken liver crostini 7/10 Squid ink Spaghetti e vongele 11/10 Tiramisu 8/10 Service 15/10 I need to preface that our service here was superb! Everyone was so helpful and a delight. Romaine and lemon salad was solid. It doesn't look like much, but everything married together and super refreshing. The chicken liver was very...generous. The flavor was still a little gamy, so I wished it was masked a little more or split into more slices of bread instead of two (picture for reference). The highlight of the dinner was indeed the pasta dish. It had such a spin on the classic vongele pasta! And the pasta was perfectly al dente. Tiramisu looked pretty, but the lady fingers were soaked too long and got super soggy. The flavor was there though.

Yelp
I've never heard of anyone going to Hawaii and raving about Italian food they've eaten there. Well let me be the first! I dined with friends who come here often and I wasn't disappointed. I was a bit put off by the QR code menu. It is hard to read, especially if you didn't bring you cheaters. The special board is in Italian but I guessed at most and our server filled in the blanks. We started with a Lemon Basil Martini. The basil was muddled. Enough to give it a great favor. Moving on to the special appetizer. I don't remember the name, but it was basically soft gooey wonderful cheese with garlic and olive oil served on crostini. We three devoured it in no time. I decided on Black Truffle Risotto that was spectacular, albeit VERY rich. I split it with my dining companions and still left a bit behind. They each had a pizza which they shared. One was a Bacon and Poached Egg pizza, the other was a White Gorgonzola and Prosciutto pizza. Both amazing with the best crust...just the right texture and crunch. As full as we were, we couldn't resist a Vanilla Panna Cotta with 3 spoons. The perfect end to a wonderful meal!

Yelp
Still amazing. Mahalo for keeping your doors so deliciously open. You can't go wrong with this menu. The service by Susie and the hostess was warm and fabulous.

Yelp
I had a very average experience at this Sare Pepe restaurant. My husband was getting tired of the Hawaiian cuisine flavors a few days into our trip, and wanted a change. We decided to get Italian food in Lahaina, and this place had flawless reviews. We ended up ordering the Insalata di Bufala Caprese to start, followed by the Rigatoni with speck and mushrooms, Strozzapreti con Guanciale di Manzo, and the pizza with the meatballs. The tomato caprese salad, which was featured on Yelp, was just okay. The cheese was average, the baslamic vinegar average, and the tomatoes tasted like slicer tomatoes?! Weird. My husband liked the Rigatoni and speck pasta, but I felt the flavors were too strong. I did like the Strazzapretti pasta, which was quite tasty. We added red pepper flakes, and it tasted fantastic. We also had leftovers, brought this home, and it still tasted great the next day. We had the pizza with meatballs, which was pretty good too. It did need the red pepper flakes too, and I think it would have tasted even better with some basil leaves, but it was fine. I really liked the red sauce and the sauciness overall! The service was very mediocore. We sat down and were greeted right away, and our waitress said she'd be right back with the water, but it took at least 5-7 mins for her to return. We ordered our food, and she forgot to ask my husband and I if we wanted anything to drink with our meal, so we had to flag her down after ordering to order a glass of wine. First we had flagged down the bus boy, and we asked if we could order a glass of wine, and he said "no...." And we were like what? Okay, maybe he's not the bus boy, but never tell us no...just say that you'll get our waitress for us. The food took forever to come, we waited for at least 25 mins between receiving our appetizer and main course. It was weird because when we asked where our food was, she said the pizza guy's been backed up, but it should be out shortly - but we ordered 2 pastas, and 1 pizza? So the pastas could have come before that? I don't mind if the kitchen is backed up, I just want updates on the status if it's taking longer than usual. That's all it takes. I feel bad to judge this restaurant because Hawaii obviously has different access to Ingredients than California where we're from. I think the food was fine, but the service was disappointing and could have been improved. The meal was pretty inexpensive though, I think coming out to $120 including tip out the door. Not bad. I guess if you are highly craving something that is not Hawaiian food, then this is probably your place. I wouldn't return though personally.

Yelp
The service was amazing and truly the best part of our dining experience. But the value, ambience, wait time left a lot to be desired. Based on reviews, we were excited to try this place and esp get the black truffle risotto. However, we were told it was seasonal, so it wasn't offered. I completely understood that, so I chose a fettuccine with mushroom sauce. After we placed the order, we were told a few minutes later that it was sold out even though it was only 630 pm. They recommended the saffron rigatoni if I wanted something creamy, so I went for that. You have to love saffron to like this dish because it was very, very strong. I couldn't eat it since it was such an overwhelming flavor, and I asked if I could just have a pasta carbonara even though it was off menu. The wait time for our food was over an hour, which wasn't great with kids. When I got the carbonara, it was pretty good although it just had bacon and nothing else on it. We were charged $36 for the carbonara, which was just outrageous even for Maui prices, esp given that this was in a strip mall with no view. Again, the servers were awesome, but the pricing was ridiculous. For 2 pastas and 2 glasses of wine the total was $105 before tip. I'd skip this place next time and pay less with a great view at most other restaurants.

Yelp
We arrived with reservations - my 1st time to this establishment. It wasn't slammed busy as of yet. We were seated after the hostess took a reservation phone call. Very casual table settings - with the previous ratings I had some expectations. Service person was very nice but slow compared To the number of guests at tables. Then it got busy and the service was impacted more. However she was very nice. Cocktails were mediocre, nothing took my breath away. We ordered the pizzas and a very high priced fish special. We had to wait a very long time to get our food, they did bring us a small bowl of olives for our wait. The pizza I heard was amazing - However, it was just okay. Sorry I would not come back too many other amazing eateries that are much better. I mean it wasn't horrible but it wasn't something I want to experience again.

Yelp
Always fun to eat at Sale Pepe! Kelsi was our server and she did a great job making our dinner so much fun. We ordered two cheese and one meat appetizer and also the bruschetta to start. We also ordered the olives. The cheese and meat starter had marinated olives and grapes that really added a great punch. I ordered the lasagna as always and my wife ordered the special , a pasta with lobster. Both were great! Two different wines and a cocktail and we had no room for dessert. Thanks again Kelsi and Sale Pepe!

Yelp
One of the best Italian foods I have ever had. We ordered one of the two vegetarian appetizers and it was delicious. Sadly not many veggie options, so we ended up ordering Gnocchi from the main course and it was out of this world. I usually end up eating only a little bit of gnocci because it gets too creamy after a few bits. But this one was just perfect! In fact they accidentally ordered two for our table and we were more than happy to gobble up the other one too! Please make a reservation before you go. This place is busy and even at 6 pm, we could only be seated at the bar
