Diane and I made a dining visit here for the first time, just before a departure by car to Southern California. We fueled up ourselves at about 8:45 p.m., with an AOL perk $10 off $20 Restaurant.com certificate in hand. As it turned out we ordered over $40 worth of food for a medium Pastrami Dip with Cheese, Mozzarella Sticks, Cheddar Cheese Fries, Pastrami Fries, and a can of diet soda. Even though a sign at the entrance to the dining room said that the restaurant would be open until 10:00 p.m., we were told that, although to go orders would still be accepted, the dining room was closing at 9:00 p.m. As a result the fountain drink machine had already been turned off, and no prepared hot food like Fried Chicken was available. We were also informed that no restroom exists on the premises.
However, the sole staffer cooked up great-tasting food while we briefly waited, and portions were huge. I received about 3/4 lb.of pastrami between my large Pastrami Dip and large Pastrami Fries. Pickle Chips were added to the Pastrami Fries per my request. The Provolone Cheese on my Pastrami Dip was very well melted; the meat mostly lean; the hot au jus on point; and the roll holding everything together nice and soft. The sandwich was large, juicy, and luscious, and I devoured all of it right there, in addition to every piece of pastrami in my Pastrami Fries. A few fries were left behind, because I was already quite full and didn't want to nod off on the road.
Diane received 11 Mozzarella Sticks when 9 were expected, and more Fries covered with Cheddar Cheese than she could handle. The fries were abundant, but the cheese was somewhat congealed, and only covered the top layer of fries. Yet who's complaining? We both had plenty to eat, and got our money's worth.
The place was clean and comfortable, and we left on our own accord at 9:15 p.m., satiated and ready for a 3-1/2-hour night drive. Food was easily four star in portion size, freshness, and quality. But there were just two many items unavailable when we entered the restaurant to merit higher than an overall three-star rating.
Next time I will show up earlier in the day, when everything should be running on all cylinders. And I will arrive very hungry, just as I did on this occasion.
