Samosa House - Review - Venice - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"A mini-Westside empire (with a location in Silver Lake too), Samosa House is our go-to for a casual vegetarian lunch or dinner. Walk in, head to the counter, and ask for the three-item combo. You get naan, rice, and your choice of three constantly changing entrees. If the smoky cauliflower curry is present, do not pass go without it." - Jess Basser Sanders

The 20 Best Lunch Spots In Santa Monica - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Getting lunch for under $10 is a tough ask in this part of town, but Samosa House on Main Street delivers. The three-item combo involves naan, rice, and your choice of three changing entrees, and comes in at just over $9. There are lots of choices for vegetarians and vegans, including the smoky cauliflower curry that shouldn’t be missed." - sylvio martins, jess basser sanders

Where To Have Dinner For Around $30 In Santa Monica

"Samosa House is the complete opposite of Gilbert’s El Indio. You’re not here to party, you’re here on your own when the inside of your fridge looks like you just came back from vacation (except your last vacation was nine months ago). At this point you will want something quick, easy, and extremely quiet. Head to the counter, order the three-item combo (which should include the smoky cauliflower curry if it’s on the menu), get a Kingfisher to go with it, and you’ll be home in under half an hour." - jess basser sanders

10 Great Asian-Owned Vegan-Friendly Restaurants In LA

"Vibha and Kunal Bhojak are the owners of Samosa House and its five locations across the Los Angeles area from El Segundo to Silver Lake. It’s a family-owned business that’s been operating for 15 years, offering vegetarian and vegan Indian fare. Bharat Bazaar West is where it all started, first as a vegetarian Indian grocery store selling samosas and previously owned by another couple, Ramesh and Phulan Chander. In 2006, the Bhojak family took over the business and rebranded it to Samosa House to pay tribute to Chander’s signature item - samosas. The cafeteria-style counter at the Samosa House East location offers a menu of traditional Indian curries like aloo, daal, jackfruit, a variety of pakora, samosas, naan, and more. I love trying a little bit of everything, so I always order the combination plate of saag, chana masala, and veggie chicken with naan, rice, and yogurt." - esther cho, with warm welcome

Google
Stopped here for a late lunch after the beach. The serving size is big, especially for the price. The food was really good and they had a good variety to choose from. Definitely will stop back next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Google
10/10 we got 2 combination plates and everything was incredible. I thought it was going to be too much food but I ate it all it tasted so good. I am a meat eater and didn’t notice the lack of meat. Reasonably priced too, in biodegradable plates and cutlery, can’t recommend it enough. Staff very helpful too

Google
I had their combo plate. Meal was very satisfying. Very generous portions for the price. You get rice, 3 sides, raitha and a naan bread. I couldn’t believe they had the jackfruit curry which is a special dish from coastal Karnataka. Couldn’t resist the mango lassi. All items tasted good. Wish I had some more space for the Gulab jamun but may be next time. Service was quick and the staff are very hospitable. Other group which was there were having chats and they seemed to enjoy their meal too. Only improvement I would suggest is for them to provide Steel spoons rather than plastic spoons to have the food. Highly recommend!

Google
Used to be my go-to, but not anymore. I was in line for about 15 minutes, waiting patiently behind another couple. Just as it was finally our turn, a group of people walked in and blatantly cut in front of us — and to my surprise, the server took their order without hesitation. No acknowledgment, no apology, no eye contact — just complete disregard. It was incredibly rude, both on the part of the group and the staff. This kind of experience really changes how you feel about a place you once liked.I’m

Google
Really enjoyed dinner here. I stopped in after walking by many times and I'm glad I did. Very affordable for the quality and variety. I enjoyed all the main courses, the only thing that was just ok was the yogurt dish at the end. I would try the soup next time.

Google
All vegetarian Indian cuisine, ready-made, and delicious! We got two entrées each, plus soup, and either chapati or rice. The jackfruit had great texture, and the sauce was good. The pho – chicken meatballs were amazing! Chickpeas were really good, as well as the mixed veggie. The soup was a little bit spicy, perfectly balanced!

Google
Handsdown the best indian food you can find in Venice or infact Los Angeles. Its not expensive and you'll have multiple options to choose from.

Google
Really awesome place to eat. Great experience. It's mom and pop, NOT corporate here.

Yelp
This place has a great menu with several options. We went here after visiting the Santa Monica Farmer's Market one Sunday morning, as it's just down the block from the market. The food is incredibly inexpensive (I can't imagine how they can afford such low prices) and the taste is absolutely delicious (and authentic!)!!! You order up front, pay, and then the staff brings the food to your table. They have some comfortable seating. I think it would be nice if they painted the walls up and brightened up with some new artwork, but I'd still go back here any day!

Yelp
The samosas were super large and had that perfect fried and crispy flavor. They were so flavorful and the spice was wonderful with the decadent chutney provided. The service was good, and the ambiance was great too. We came here in passing while in Santa Monica and were not disappointed, would definitely recommend if you're a Samosa/Indian food fan!

Yelp
Food was yummy. Service was quick. Ambiance was chill. Near the beach. Walking distance. Also I got gout from eating this stuff. It's okay still yummy but I can't come back here anymore. Haha

Yelp
This looked like a quick fast food stop so my expectations were kind of low going in. We got turned down by everyone at the busy pier/beach area for food and ended up here. Instead of getting the fast food buffet style items that they had ready we decided to order the other things in the menu. We ordered a samosa chaat, chilli dosa, pani puri and gulab Jamun. Here are my ratings in details: Dosa: 5/5 wow this was so much better than I expected and I will be back to order TWO of these next time. Samosa chaat: 4.5/5 SO good again, just wished it came with another samosa or more substance! Pani puri: 0/5 DO NOT get this. So not worth it. They were the store bought ones and we got all flat ones from the bottom of the box :/ they should have honest just tossed these one aside. The pani wasn't good either and nor was the filling. I was really disappointed. For a fast food place, this should be a easy one to get down. Especially when they don't prepare it for you. Gulab Jamun: 4/5 nice and warm!

Yelp
I went over here during the weekend as I was staying in Mar vista and was recommended to come here. I'm a big fan of indian food even though I'm not super familar with the different dishes. So I got 3 items, some soup, rice, garlic naan, and a samosa to take home and I'm quite impressed. Also the fact that they're vegetarian makes them even better because I feel healthier for some odd reason. One of the items that did stand out for me was the jackfruit curry. This dish was surprisingly really savory and I'm a big fan of savory food. If you're not familiar with Indian food, I highly recommend that you ask the person there for their suggestions and also try some too so then you know what you're getting. Overall this place was surprisingly good! The parking was fine on the weekend and I just parked in an alleyway that was one way behind the restaurant.

Yelp
Service is really quick here, it's basically buffet and they heat up the naan and samosas in the back. The food here is very reasonably priced. When I came here more regularly, I always took my food to go because the seating is terrible and inside is always a bit stuffy. However the quality of the food has become so hit or miss that I stopped going at all. With the combo you can try a few things which is great but some things are completely flavorless, while others are great - and if you try the same thing a month later it tastes completely different. Overall, they need to work on consistency and put a little more effort into their offerings if thy want to maintain a consistent customer base.

Yelp
A hidden gem that I never would've tried had it not been for my friend who comes here often. I got the combo with white rice. Would've opted for the two items had I known the combo came with 3 sides. I also got an order of garlic naan and samosa because duh. We took our meals over to the beach where it hit different. As other reviews have mentioned, the chicken dish is really the best one they have. It was the first thing I finished and wished I had more. I was a fan of the pieces of garlic on the naan. I'm getting a tub of chicken next time.

Yelp
Ambience: it's dirty with no ventilation (like fans or AC) just windows are opened. Plates of leftover food on tables, tables not cleaned, chairs are sticky. Came with my kids and they disliked it so much they ran back into the car and locked it. It has a creepy feeling. Service: the guys who helped us was nice but there was another guy who was really creepy. Food: We got a combo which was useless. Chana Masala and naan were decent. Everything else tasted as if it had spoiled (bc this place doesn't have temp control). Save your stomach and find another place to eat. All of us felt sick after eating here.

Yelp
Incredible food at such a great value. So many choices. I'm not a vegetarian, but I love this place.

Yelp
First time at this place, even though I used to work at Santa Monica for few years, few years back. We went for just buying samosa. However, when we saw their menu we thought we get some to-go curries along with Samosa. We ordered the veg khorma and the paneer butter masala. We ordered few chappathis as well. The guy helping us at the counter was very helpful, patient and welcoming. The food came out in about 15 minutes. The Samosas were very good. The kids and the whole family loved the Samosa and the kids said that they would want to buy at this place again in the future. The curries were also good especially the veg khorma. I will look to go to this place again in the future for sure to try the other food that they have. Will certainly look to dine it at their place rather than taking a to-go. I saw that the restaurant was half occupied when we went and the portion sizes seemed decent. They have combo options for meals.

Yelp
Always passed by this place on my way to urth cafe and decided to come in and give it a try for dinner! It was our first time trying South Indian food so we didn't know everything was meatless. I got the 2 combo plate with the soybean chicken, alo, Raika, and garlic naan. My fiancé got the 3 combo with rice soybean chicken, alo, and kofte with garlic naan. The soybean chicken was our favorite. The spice level was very mediocre which was a plus for me! Portions were good and filling but if you're super hungry I suggest getting an appetizer as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Portions are large and food is above average. Friendly service. Convenient location. It was my first time here so I went with the staff recommendation.
google avatar

Sinchana G.

Yelp
The quality and the authenticity of Indian food is lost in few of their recipes. I like few of their curries when it is made fresh. I always used to try their chats where as first time tried Dose. It was decently crispy and the chutneys itself tasted alright. If craving for Indian food, you can definitely give it a go.

Yelp
I love the other two locations of Samosa House in Culver City, so I was happy to see this one on the corner when I was in Santa Monica recently. I was going to go to Urth Caffe but then spotted this. They have a bunch of vegetarian curries already prepared and you pick which ones you want for a 2-item combination plate or to buy by the cup. Sadly, the curries here were very watery compared to the ones at the other Samosa House locations. The food was a 2 out of 5 stars, but I gave them an extra star because after we told them we wanted non-spicy, they let us sample a few of the curries before committing, and no one samples anymore due to the pandemic. The things I enjoyed here were the plain naan -- humongous, fresh, hearty -- and the samosa. It was worth it just for the naan, but I didn't like how thin the curries were. It felt like I was getting mostly just sauce. The samosa was decent and came with 2 tamarind and mint/jalapeno dipping sauces.

Silvia Y.

Yelp
Super delicious! I'm impressed by the naan specially. They make it right in front of you and it's just delicious. Also the food is warm and many options to choose from.

Yelp
Absolutely not recommended!! If I could give it zero stars, I would. We were looking forward to trying a new Indian restaurant in the area but the experience was nothing but disappointing. Upon entering, the place was filthy, none of the tables or floor was cleaned. The counter person took forever to take our order & seemed distracted. After he took our order, he told us to grab a table and that they will call our name once its ready. We waited 15 minutes then 30 then 45 minutes and that's when I realized something wasn't right since other people who came way after us kept getting their orders. Then a smelly homeless person came to our table and asked us for money. Apparently he had enough funds to put in a huge order and got his food as well. At that point, I decided to go up and ask about the status of our order and the counter guy looked confused and asked when it was placed. Then he talked to the guy in the back and looked embarrassed once he realized he forgot to submit our order & our food was never made. Now this is an hour later. That was such an unprofessional way to handle a customer & I am nothing but dumbfounded at who runs this operation & how its even operating. We decided to ask them for a refund and leave at that point. Folks, there's way better cleaner restaurants on the west side than this shit hole.

Yelp
This place is hands down amazing!!! I loved all the vegan options they had to offer and I'm literally craving another samosa writing this review! The rice, the curries, the sauces- I mean everything was filled with the perfect amount of flavor, spice to your liking- and I can keep saying all the positives. I can't wait to return. There's plenty of street parking and it's usually great to sit outside and enjoy their meals. They do offer indoor seating as well! The prices are perfect and they give you such a good amount of food. I recommend anyone who loves Indian food to try this place, it won't disappoint!

Yelp
Came for a quick bite and had amazing Samosa chaat and Chhole bhature! Very tasty and reminded me of India!
google avatar

Doris M.

Yelp
The other day as I was going to another restaurant (urban skillet) on this same block, I parked at a meter right next to this business' kitchen entrance. In a white cargo van there were trays of uncooked and uncovered samosas sitting on the dirty floor in the summer sun. I sat looking at them while my friend paid the meter and I saw that no one was attending to them. I decided I needed to take a photo to warn people, but a little boy came outside, saw me looking, and hurried the trays inside. I am sad because I saw this place and immediately thought "ooh I like simosas", but I will certainly never eat there. You're probably safe as they're deep fried so you shouldn't get sick, I guess.
google avatar

Sidnie B.

Yelp
Great authentic Indian food for a cheap price. Definitely go for their combo plate! For the price and style, they offer a lot and it's really good for that. Great service & a nice environment.
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
If you can get over it being vegetarian this place rocks. Also don't get the yogurt dip or the fake meat meatballs but seriously everything else is amazing. The saag melts in your moth and the yellow Cauliflower dish is so yummy. It's super quick, the service is always amazing (staff is so friend and helpful) and they're pricing is very reasonable.
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
Place is great. They give you a good amount of food for the price. The samosas are delicious. I really liked the mango lassi as well. Garlic naan was fluff.
google avatar

Ryna D.

Yelp
We just happened by this spot and decided to give it a shot. Sadly, we were both very disappointed. The chaats and the dosa were simply subpar quality and freshness. Certainly wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
google avatar

Neelu P.

Yelp
Bad imitation Indian food and worse service. Not served hot. Indian guy at the front was VERY rude and impatient. There were no other customers and it wasn't busy. Rice tastes like it was 2 days old.
google avatar

Suresh A.

Yelp
Horrible Horrible Horrible Unclean tables..Staff refused to clean the tables..Instead gave the cleaning cloth to us to clean the tables ourselves which we ended up doing.. Unhygienic bathroom..This place should be shut down.. Such poor customer service..Scratching my head on how these guys are still in business.

Stella L.

Yelp
Used to love it here but like what in the fresh hell is this? Vegan chicken is now a .. chicken nugget? Skin on ??

J J.

Yelp
What happened to this place? Did they get a new cook? I just ordered my usual samosas and they were disgusting, super deep fried and greasy, and the dough was really bad too. Can someone running this place check the quality of food please?
google avatar

Selina G.

Yelp
vegan Indian.... I wish I knew that before ordering. doesn't taste like your traditional Indian food places, maybe it's a different region. not a fan. I felt rushed when ordering and not happy with my selections. it has a huge following so others must enjoy it. i just wasn't a fan
google avatar

Tally S.

Yelp
If your friends are going to Urth and you want something that's actually good with flavor go here! Very delicious and cheap meals! I got the 3 item meal that comes with 3 items, rice, and Naan. My favorite side dish is the paneer. They also have good samosas.

Laila T.

Yelp
I only had the masala chai, which was great, but would return to try the food because it looked good. Service was very friendly.
google avatar

Ben P.

Yelp
Had the opportunity to finally eat here after a whole year or maybe more. The food is fresh and very delicious. I love their Veggie Chicken curry dish and the yellow curry too and the potato with cauliflower. When you walk in the workers welcome you with a smile and hello. It's buffet style, pick from all the wonderful selections. By the way, the garlic naan is yummy and the other bread I forgot, gluten-free. I would like to say enjoy your food!

Sierra C.

Yelp
the best indian food i have ever had. great vegan options. get the naan and aloo gobi
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
It's a bit on the tamer side, but my digestive system has a lot of sensitivities to food so it thanks me for this choice while there's still enough flavor for my finicky tastebuds to enjoy their entrees. The rice is a little too soft for my preference, but it's a minor flaw. The chana masala was a winner; it was surprisingly more complexly appealing than I would expect. The jackfruit, meanwhile, was very good, but the yogurt curry was even better. Their papadum is also one of the better versions I have ever tried. Their mango lassi is rich in mango flavor and has a creamy, drinkable yogurt consistency without being too sweet.
google avatar

eric s.

Yelp
First of all the food is insanely good. The atmosphere also A+. The reason for the 3 stars is the staff. I walked in early evening and only one person was dining. I waited and waited for the guy behind the counter to come greet me and take my order. He was just blankly staring into space. When asked white or brown rice, I said no rice. He gives my white rice. Each step of the order he's not listening. Still no big deal. I went and sat and ate my meal and he starts burping loudly behind the counter. I mean, cmon. At least try to be nice to your guests. At least try to care about the experience. These guys could not be more bored of their job it seems. If this small issue was fixed I'd give it 5 stars all day. I'll still be back regardless.
google avatar

Jenna S.

Yelp
This place is very tasty. And very reasonably priced. Got all this food plus tip for $16. Highly recommend
google avatar

Yelp
One of my favorite Indian spots. Love how it's vegetarian and vegan friendly. I got the combination plate which you can choose brown or white rice with plain naan or garlic naan.. I got the white rice and garlic naan, daal, and the other items I honestly don't know how to spell them. But it was all delicious.. make sure to get the yogurt on the side.. I love adding it to my naan .. also this location sells white claws, beer and other cute refreshments. Service is always fast and efficient.

M J.

Yelp
Amazing food for amazing prices! Customer service was also great, I accidentally spilled some of my curry and the staff were so nice and accommodating.
google avatar

Yelp
Tried many Indian restaurants around L.A but as an Indian I approve this as " THE BEST " Indian restaurant , felt like as if I am eating a home cooked meal . The quality and quantity of food is extraordinary for the price. I will definitely keep coming back . All the items ordered were top-notch .
google avatar

Ernie L.

Yelp
Best Indian food I've ever had. Apparently I'm bipolar and left a bad review last time like a douchebag. I moved to the PNW in the last year and have yet to find anything that's in the ballpark of samosa house. Let alone the price! 10/10 would recommend
google avatar

Aida K.

Yelp
Wonderful casual eat-in & convenient take-out eats for vegetarians & vegans. Ultra mild-tame for 'beginner' Indian food fare eaters that may be timid to try something new & exotic Combo plates are the best deal - I particularly love their roasted cauliflower, papadum gluten-free bread & gulab jamun dessert. Hope they'll have baked samosas one day.
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
I can't speak to how authentic this place it, but I have enjoyed everything there. The portions are generous and the price is right. I also appreciate how they have plenty of vegan and vegetarian options (especially the vegan options). You can order specific items that I believe are made to order, but the north indian curries are all there, kept warm, so you can take a look at them, and ask plenty of questions about what each item is. They menu has north Indian curries, appetizers (samosas), breads (naan, chapatti), as well as some south indian items like dosas. I've had the 2 item combo plate as well as the Bhel Puri, which was delicious! It tasted very fresh with plenty of veggies, onions, and cilantro. The sauces were the right level of spice. That said, you really do need to eat this asap, otherwise, the puffed rice will get soggy. I don't really remember the exact items I got with the combo plate, but I do remember that the server was very friendly in answering my questions and suggestions items.

Kenn M.

Yelp
Used to love this place, just ordered for a birthday at the end of July and everything was great. Went back today at 6 pm, and the place was empty. Everything was watered down, even the chutney and tamarind sauce. They must be hurting economically, to be trying to save money by watering everything down so badly. The only thing I enjoyed was the samosa, garlic naan, and mango lasse. Probably won't risk this location again. I might still go to Culver City on Washington.
google avatar

Katherine H.

Yelp
Delicious Vegan mango Lassi But no Vegan Chai...Why is that ? Change this one thing and get one more happy customer. Yes I would go back but I need more vegan options please.
google avatar

Ary A.

Yelp
We had the place on our list of places to try and finally ordered a take out. In short: veggie chicken is the only dish that was good. Samosas were okay. The combo size is good for one person, a bit too small for sharing as main dish (but great for sharing as appetizer). Samosa is of a regular size (someone mentioned they are "huge", but they are just regular). Not much else to say.

Maile G.

Yelp
The service is always very friendly and the food has always been a favorite of mine. But I took off a star because it seems like they changed their veggie chicken recipe. The old version was so much better! maybe it was the change of shape that threw me off or the texture difference, but I didn't enjoy it this time. I'm not sure when it changed but it's my only issue! The old version was less chewy, more chicken-like, and tasted better. Bring it back! Still love this place and still would come back.

Yelp
e pleasure of trying Samosa house for the first time. Once I got in, it seemed like any other ordinary, Indian food place, amazing smell and amazing vibe. What I didn't notice until halfway through ordering my food is that everything in Samosa house is vegetarian! This threw me off initially, because I am not vegetarian, and I was definitely looking for some chicken tikka masala, but I gave it a shot anyways. I can honestly say that everything in there was very flavorful and had a great texture and consistency to it but I will probably not return because I do like to eat regular meat, and they didn't have tikka masala, which kind of threw me off. So for any vegetarian's out there this place is probably an easy place to choose for a great flavor and fill you up but for all my meat eaters, I feel like there are plenty other Indian food places that are better than this. The service here is a 30 out of 10 though and I highly recommend everyone working there get a raise and tip them well.
google avatar

Shay T.

Yelp
Went here the first time and it was average. Gave this spot a second try today and it was pretty bad. Service was bad here the first time and continued to be bad here the second time. They have no workflow whatsoever. I got a dosa and it was burnt. The food is not great. I would not recommend.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this Indian vegetarian spot in Santa Monica and was so impressed by the food & UNBEATABLE prices!!! I believe everything is vegetarian with some vegan options as well! I ordered the three dish combination platter which comes with SO much food - there's no way that someone will leave hungry with the amount of food that comes with the platter. You get to choose between brown and white rice, three sides, a choice of plain or garlic naan, & soup or yogurt. I opted for the brown rice, and got the veggie chicken, jackfruit, and the cauliflower/potatoes mix with garlic naan and veggie soup. The naan was cooked to perfection as they make it upon ordering - so fresh & hot! The soup was my least favorite, I liked the spice but was a bit bland for me. As for the three sides, I will say the "chicken" was my favorite and the other dishes were also really tasty especially for not using any meat! Love love love this spot and definitely fulfills your Indian food cravings :)

Yelp
Awesome place to eat indian food. Not so expensive but reasonable price range. Love the place of the seatings were unique and cool. hands up to go this place again.
