The 38 Best Restaurants in Sydney, Australia | Eater

"As Korean cuisine spreads across Sydney, Sáng by Mabasa remains entirely singular. When it opened in 2018, the menu featured items you didn’t see everywhere, such as the yassam (pickled radish wraps, sweetened with nashi pear shreds and zingy with wasabi). Even the fried chicken was different, the meat marinated in fresh milk to enhance its scent. Try the nabak mul-kimchi (flat-cut water kimchi), which has been in the family for generations. Vibe check: Kenny Yong-soo Son’s designs for his family’s restaurant have won over diners. The Studiokyss creator has crafted beautiful sauce spoons, pendant lights, and the most elegant broom in existence for Sáng By Mabasa." - Lee Tran Lam

Home style korean cooking with contemporary take on the dishes. Delightful experience. Cozy atmosphere but the place is a bit too small and you may feel being squeezed. Highly recommended the yukhoe and pancake

Nice little restaurant in Surry Hills. They have a few seatings each night and in our case only 10 people filled up the place. Menu is very innovative with Korean flavours. Highlight was the Abalone, the Wagyu ribs, the pickled vegetables and a few other great dishes to eat. We had the 7 course meal and did not leave hungry but also did not feel like we ate too much. Was a good experience overall.

We had an amazing dinner here, and will definitely be coming back. The food was so flavourful and fresh, with an interesting selection of dishes. The raw prawns, short ribs and white kimchi were a stand out for us! We sat at bar stools looking over the kitchen and got to see the amazing attention to detail put into every dish. Would definitely recommend for a special dinner.

Cosy dinner location with authentic Korean food - fusioned for Australian tastebuds. Food was served a little slow at the start due to the influx of people, but caught up after the first 2 dishes. We had the tasting menu and it was wonderful. Portions are generous. I would’ve loved smaller portions with more variety but that’s just me. Love the family-like dynamics between chefs/staff. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and calm. This makes a comforting dinner environment.

Delicious food! We had the fried chicken and a spicy silken tofu soup. Both were really good. The chicken were the most meaty and juicy wings we’ve have and the soup was also so so good

I recently had the pleasure of dining at a charming, family-run authentic Korean restaurant, and it truly was a delightful experience. The warm and friendly service stood out right from the moment we entered; the staff greeted us with bright smiles and were attentive throughout our meal. Given that the establishment is operated by an older couple, I found the small lunch menu to be quite understandable—it allowed them to focus on quality rather than quantity. However, this also meant that many diners, including us, ended up ordering very similar dishes, leading to a somewhat limited variety. Our meals arrived promptly and were accompanied by an incredible aroma that filled the air, building our anticipation. We started with the kimchi pancake, which was a small portion that was crispy on the outside but a bit lackluster in terms of flavor; I would rate it a 6 out of 10. Following that, I tried the beef bulgogi, stir-fried to perfection, though the sweet sauce felt a bit overpowering for my taste. It was complemented by a few slices of mushroom and green shallot, also landing a 6 out of 10 in my book. The highlight of the meal was the spicy kimchi noodle soup, but I must admit that it was a hit or miss for me. The bowl was filled with generous amounts of noodles and topped with small pieces of kimchi and a few slices of cucumber. While the clean broth was refreshing, I felt the dish was rather pricey for what it offered, and some adjustments could make it much better. My hope is that the next diners have an improved experience with this dish. I genuinely appreciate the effort this couple puts into their restaurant and hope my suggestions contribute positively to their ongoing culinary journey. Supporting small, family-run eateries is important, and I cherish the authenticity and care they bring to their food.

Visited in Nov 2024 There is a a-la-carte menu and a “feed me” menu. We went with the a-la-carte menu and ended up ordering 4 starter dishes and 2 main courses - which was good enough for 3 pax. My favourite dishes were the pork jowl main course and the baby abalone & noodles starter course. All in all, a very good Korean restaurant which I’d definitely recommend to folks visiting Sydney.

We had an outstanding meal at Sang by Mabasa, I’ve been recommended by many friends in the past and it really lives up to the hype. We had the Feed Me menu and despite my husband and I having different palates, we enjoyed so many elements of each dish. The wagyu tritip was a standout for me, the flavour of the beef was incredible and the pickles on the side were very complementary. My husband loved the L.A. galbi short rib, it was perfectly marinated and tender. Highlights were also the raw kingfish with sesame which we both loved, and for me the crispy rice dish with salmon roe, so umami and a wonderful mix of textures. Service was lovely as well and there is so much love poured into each dish. I already can’t wait to return.

Yelp
Our Experience The Travelmints team was looking for some great Korean food, and we'd heard some good things about SÁNG. It's a small, cozy, family-run business located in Surry Hills. They serve Korean cuisine with a modern touch, and they pack every dish full of flavour, using only the most premium ingredients. If you're expecting a run-of-the-mill Korean experience, then you're in for a shock. Dishes like the Janchi Guksu (noodle soup, carrots, zucchini, egg, seaweed & stir-fried kimchi with seasonal sides) and Yassam (nashi pear & cucumber wrapped in pickled white radish wrap and topped with some perilla leaves) blew both our minds and tastebuds. SÁNG are updating Korean cuisine for the modern day, and you'll be wowed by their innovative dishes. Make sure you get in early though, because it only fits 20 people at a time. It's a small dining space, which gives SÁNG an air of intimacy and exclusivity. Recommendations If you're searching for a unique Korean dining experience, then we definitely recommend SÁNG. It's a great place to try something different, but also has some authentic dishes to satisfy any cravings. Feedback for management While the food was great, it was cramped. We understand that they want to maintain the family touch, there was a lack of floor staff. While we were eating, our table became stacked with plates, and there weren't any staff to take away any used dishes. It'd be great to see another floor staff member added during peak hour to pay attention to customers/tables, in order to maintain a high level of service.

Yelp
Happy to have discovered one of the best new Korean restaurants in Sydney. My wife is Korean and she says it's the most authentic food she's had outside of Korea. Highly recommend lunch menu and lunch specials! Also, do yourself a favour and grab a pomegranate ade - delicious!!! For a more detailed review check out benjaminlewis.net/review
