Chinese Hot Pot Restaurant Sanku Maots’ai Is Opening in NYC | Eater NY

"Making its American debut in the East Village at 167 First Avenue (between East Ninth and Tenth streets) with an anticipated mid-June opening, this China-based fast-casual chain focuses on the Sichuan dish maocai — spicy individual hot pots filled with broths, meat, tofu, seafood, vegetables, rice, and noodles. Customers select ingredients from a buffet table into baskets, choose a broth style ranging from tomato to mushroom to spicy Sichuan, then hand everything to a staffer to have the hot-pot bowl assembled and cooked in the kitchen; payment is by total weight of ingredients beforehand at $3.99 for every 100 grams. Dishes will be available for dine-in, takeout, and delivery. The New York location is run by Chinese American restaurateur Sky Bai (who also runs a Flushing restaurant) and will take over the former Tatsu Ramen space (which closed in 2021). The company started in Chengdu in 2008, has grown to over 300 locations in China, has expanded internationally to Germany (Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt) and recently New Zealand, plans 20–30 openings across Europe, and aims to expand to Chicago and Seattle next; this will be the brand’s first time in North America." - Nadia Chaudhury

I’m so so so excited that there is a dry pot / hot pot place in the area!!! The gentrification of dry pot with Mala Project is too real - this restaurant supposedly has tons of locations in China. It’s priced at $17.99 a pound ($3.99 per 100 grams) and you get to pick whatever you want into a bowl and then chose your broth, and they cook it for you. I’m very pleasantly surprised at the diversity of the offerings - many kinds of beef, chicken, fish, shrimp, tripe, chicken feet, quail egg, 3 kinds of mushrooms, veggies, tofu, and stuff I wouldn’t even normally get but the options are amazing. I got a dry broth less option this time, with mild spice I was able to chose. It was delicious and they ask you if you want white rice or not. It was so so so good, and mine weighed just about a pound. I appreciate that they take off the weight of the basket when weighing. I didn’t love the ice pudding - it was a bit too sweet for me but good for cooling down spice, generally speaking. There’s plenty of seating and it’s very comfortable and bright and spacious. I love that they have the tissue packets just like in Asia. The service was also really good, the staff is super helpful and kind and walks you through the process and answers any questions. Next time I will definitely get the tomato broth, and try the sauce station!

I visited SANKU MAOTS’AI 三顾冒菜 in East Village and really enjoyed it! It’s a self-service hotpot where you can choose your own toppings, meats, and broth, then they cook everything for you. I love the concept. you can pick as much as you want, and the price is based on the weight. There’s also a sauce station where you can mix and match your own dipping sauce, or follow their recipe suggestions. The place is new, clean, and perfect when you want to enjoy hotpot individually. I’ll definitely come back

I’ve been so excited to try this place. I finally went and was blown away. It’s super clean, and everyone is very friendly and helpful. The food is so delicious and fresh. The spicy Szechuan broth was delicious. The staff gave me a beautiful to-go container and a fancy leftover bag. It’s a must-try. This was such a fun and delightful dining experience.

The pickled cabbage broth-- one of three vegan options-- is not to be trifled with. It's so vinegary and spicy 🔥 I had to pour a whole glass of ice water into it so I could continue eating without gagging. I thought I was unfazed when it comes to spicy, but you get no warning at the level of fire this broth has. No little red flakes or jalapenos floating in the soup. It will knock the phlegm out of you. Otherwise, assembly came out tasty. How they're able to cook a fresh homemade soup in just 10 minutes is a trick and treat in one. Next time I'm going for the mushroom broth.

Absolutely blown away by SANKU MAOTS'AI--again! This place just keeps raising the bar when it comes to authentic Sichuan hotpot. The flavors are bold, the ingredients are top-tier, and the atmosphere is effortlessly stylish. This time, we tried their Mojiao Golden Broth and the "Family Feast" combo, and they were both next level. The amazing citrusy kick from the wood ginger, with just the right touch of heat. The Family Feast was packed with variety--perfectly sliced meats, crisp veggies, fresh seafood--all super fresh and beautifully arranged. The space is clean, modern, and thoughtfully designed. Warm lighting, comfy seating, and a great playlist in the background--it's got that upscale-but-inviting vibe down to a science. SANKU MAOTS'AI is hands down one of my favorite spots in NYC.

I really liked it! A great starter restaurant for hotpot. You eat what you pay for. No food waste. My only suggestion for them is to add clear covers with hinges for the ingredients — a better way to avoid cross contamination between food as well as people. I tried the Tropical Golden Broth and it was delicious! I will be back with a friend :)
