The 10 Best Indian Restaurants In Jersey City

"This vegetarian restaurant’s menu has grown over the years, but our favorites are their South Indian specialties. They have the most-crispy paper dosas, fresh poriyals, an expansive breakfast buffet with a live dosa station, puri bhaji, rava kesari, and more. Don’t leave without a cup of their Indian-style coffee." - nisha vedi pawar

5 Restaurants to Try This Weekend in NYC - Eater NY

"This rainy weekend will be a great one to hop on the PATH train and go to Jersey City’s India Square. In the middle of the grocery stores, butchers, sari shops, paan sellers, and jewelers, find about three dozen eating establishments, about half of them vegetarian. One such is Sapthagiri, named after a hill with seven peaks in India’s Andhra Pradesh state. Dosas and their ilk are available, but so are many regional rice dishes such as curd rice and bisi bele bath, eggplant in peanut sauce, and pesarattu upma, something like a dosa with a mung bean wrapper and filling of spiced cream of wheat." - Eater Staff

I visited this about a year ago and absolutely loved it. The food quality, ambience, and service were all excellent back then it felt like a true gem for South Indian breakfast lovers. Naturally, I was excited to revisit in 2025, but unfortunately, this visit didn’t live up to the previous experience. While the temple music and peaceful ambiance still create a welcoming atmosphere, the quality of the food has noticeably dropped. The vada and puri were extremely hard and nearly inedible, which was disappointing. I did enjoy the dosa and a few other items, but overall, the meal lacked the freshness and authenticity I remembered. What saddened me the most was the limited buffet variety. In 2024, they had pani puri, pav bhaji, cutlets, pongal, poha and several other items alongside the regular breakfast spread. This time, most of those dishes were missing, and the selection was minimal as shown in the photo I’ve attached. It’s disappointing to see such a vibrant place lose its charm. I genuinely hope the team can bring back the quality and variety that once made Spatagiri a go-to spot for delicious Indian breakfast. It still has great potential just needs that spark again.

Google
We like the food, taste and flavors. However the reason we give less stars, is attention to the order. Asked for 'no onions' in each dish. Got onions in between paneer slices and lots of onions covered dish on top.

Google
The real South Indian tastes, I felt like I was eating at udupi hotel in India. I would highly recommend to try out the food here and even the owner of the restaurant is super friendly and always there to attend the customers needs.

Google
Amazing place to have South Indian food. We ordered Dosa, Chili gobi and Uttapam. Everything tasted well and the service was good as well. The filter coffee is a must try. They have separate seating for non-vegetarians. The vegetarian side has menus that have all vegie food. The place is far better than other restaurants on Journal Square. Highly recommend the place.

Google
We recently ordered catering from Sapthagiri Taste of India and were incredibly impressed. Every dish was absolutely delicious—flavorful, fresh, and clearly made with care. The entire experience, from ordering to delivery, was smooth and professional. Whether you’re dining in or looking for high-quality catering, I strongly recommend Sapthagiri. They truly deliver on both taste and service!

Google
Saptagiri is a brand and trademark for south Indian delicacies in Jersey City. Must try is their breakfast buffet containing idli, upma, vada, dosa, puri, bhaji, chutney, jalebi, and chai at the end. Great taste and quick service is their trademark. Don't miss it.

Google
We couldn’t have asked for a better experience! Team Sapthagiri catering truly went above and beyond for our backyard graduation party. From the initial planning stages to the final clean-up, everything was seamless, professional, and handled with care. The food was absolutely delicious—fresh, beautifully presented, and enjoyed by all our guests. Whether it was the appetizers, chicken kebabs were a major hit—tender, flavorful, and perfectly grilled. Guests couldn’t stop talking about them, main dishes, Chats, or desserts, every bite was full of flavor. They even accommodated our Swaminarayan guest with no onions & Garlic preferences without any hassle. What really stood out was the level of service. The staff was friendly, efficient, and attentive to every detail, allowing us to relax and enjoy the celebration with our guests. They helped turn our backyard party into a warm, festive space and created a truly memorable event. Highly recommend Team Sapthagiri catering for any event—big or small . Thank you for making our celebration so special!

Google
It won't be fair if I don't give them 5 in all aspects. Despite of many delicious food excellent customer service, maintaining ambience tidy and bla bla bla Staff are very smiling despite of hard work. Norah suggested and served a delicious Tomato rice and sweet Lassi! Kudos boys & girls keep working and rocking at the same time. I'm sure their management taking good care of them those welcoming to serve faces says it all!! Don't miss Breakfast Buffets on Saturdays

Yelp
I recently tried a South Indian thali for the first time, and it was a delightful experience. The variety was impressive, featuring sambar, rasam, dal, and more--all bursting with flavor. The server was knowledgeable, describing each dish and suggesting perfect pairings, which enhanced the experience. While I found the Mysore masala dosa to be decent, I've definitely had better dosas elsewhere. Still, the overall meal was worth it, and the ambiance of the restaurant added to the enjoyment. I'd give this place a solid 4.5 out of 5. A lovely spot to explore South Indian cuisine!

Yelp
The chole bhature and rava masala Dosa were excellent. The chole gravy/subzi was not oily, the bhatura was not too oily and just the right thickness. I was hungry after a hike so I made quick work of it, but your appetite mileage may vary. The rava and plain Dosa we ordered were crisp and fresh. The coconut chutney and sambhar were great in taste too, as usual at this restaurant.

Yelp
Food was good and reasonably priced with good portions. The restaurant is clean and service was nice but a bit slow considering the restaurant was not super busy this time of the day. They have separate parts of the restaurant to sit at according to whether you at vegetarian or non vegatarian which is considerate of others.

Yelp
Good dosa and vada.. service was quick as well.. I loved the buttermilk. It's tangy and refreshing

Yelp
Stumbled upon this gem while visiting Jersey. We were looking for authentic South Indian food and this place kept popping up in our google search. They have a lot of seating and free (limited) parking. We were a party of 4 and they were able to accommodate us pretty quickly. We all got the South Indian thaali and what we didn't know is that it comes with FREE refills! We also got coffee/chai. Everything was delicious! Service was amazing, they kept asking us if we needed more food. 10/10 would recommend for an authentic South Indian experience.

Yelp
Amazing catering for a business event. The owner was super helpful and made sure everything went perfectly

Yelp
Decent place for south Indian tiffin. Originally a vegetarian restaurant but I think they have included non-veg options since the waitress was asking veg or non-veg while waiting to get seated. Service was quick. Ordered Sapragiri special that comes with an idli and a dosa of your choice. Sambar was not great and only one of the chutneys was good. It was an okay experience when it came to food. The ambience was clean and spacious and plenty of tables and booths to get seated.
google avatar

Vishnu G.

Yelp
I had paneer Mysore masala dosa, double ka meetha, and majjiga. The dosa was good, but I thought the grated paneer didn't really blend with the rest of the fillings - I'd recommend getting a regular Mysore masala dosa instead. The double ka meetha and majjiga tasted just like home! The prices were very reasonable as well.
google avatar

N D.

Yelp
Food not that warm. Buffet price is reasonable. The dosas are now much smaller and have less filling. Service for the most part is good. They have one table with all their personal stuff laid out which could be used for more customers. Cleanliness is not exactly their priority. Floors were a little dirty.

Hanisha V.

Yelp
Food , service and atmosphere everything is a 5 star . Super happy with the food quality , feels like home cooked food , delicious and refreshing! The severs here are respectful and the experience is definitely worth it !!

Yelp
PHENOMENAL! I stumbled across this place on my way home from my nail appointment and I couldn't be more impressed! I had the Chana masala, chicken tikka appetizer, garlic naan and samosas. Everything was perfectly seasoned and spiced. They were even nice enough to give me a large side of sauce. It's possibly some of the best Indian food I've ever had and definitely my new go to place!! The place was quite bustling even on a Monday night and the man at the counter was very warm and accommodating even though he seemed incredibly busy with other tables and to go orders.
google avatar

Yelp
If you saw me at the late, lamented Big Apple BBQ, racing against the clock to hit all 13 non-NYC barbecue joints, you might think I don't give much attention to vegetarian fare. Sapthagiri could inspire conversions. I've opted for the more is more strategy: buffets in the old times, thali deliveries recently. The vegan thali is action-packed, with highlights including poriyal and chana masala. I have a slight preference for the North Indian thali since it contains rice pudding plus a knockout paneer. Anything you choose will have an impressive variety, with plenty of sauces and carbs to go around.

Yelp
We came for a chat night on Wednesday. Great ambience, wonderful hospitality and above all the food was great. very authentic South Indian samba's and chutneys to go with dosas and 3 varieties of idalies. Such a wonderful experience!!!! Will bring my friends over if they are in town for sure!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Really delicious! One of the best Indian restaurants I've been to. The waiters and waitresses are super sweet. Shares a space with Vaibhav so you can go to both together.
google avatar

Bianca S.

Yelp
Good food though an interesting concept. We were seated in the back room because we wanted to order meat dishes so we didn't get too much service. The food came out pretty quickly and we enjoyed it. Not sure why they separate the two restaurants but it would probably be better if they could just combine it. The back room was completely empty except us, so it felt a little weird.

Yelp
Eeehhh Sapthagiri is okay, but for me, there are much better places to eat in the area. The food is all vegetarian (not vegan) and there's no BYOB or bar here. The room is basic and the service is okay. I've eaten here a couple of times and apart from the Dosa nothing really sticks in my mind. The lunchtime buffet is good value and the price includes a Dosa per person. However, when we went there this wasn't explained to us and I had to ask about the Dosas which the waiter said we would get after we had eaten from the buffet. All the plates and drinking vessels are made of metal here which is okay but I don't like the metallic taste the cups lend to the water. They do have a small outdoor eating area in the summer which is nice though.
google avatar

Mitali S.

Yelp
Service is okay but the food is amazing! Spicy is actually extremely spicy! Order at your own risk!! We were party of 8 so we decided to order 8 different dosas and they were all really delicious! Definitely check this place out.
google avatar

Gabriel G.

Yelp
BAD DELIVERY SERVICE. I placed an order at 1:15pm for delivery at 2:15pm. After multiple calls and differing estimated delivery times, my food was left inside the door to my building without notification: the delivery person did not take the elevator to my door, call me, or call the restaurant. The best I can tell is that the food arrived between 1.5 and 2 hours late as we finally found the food around 4pm. I won't review the food because no food is worth full price plus a delivery fee plus finding your food who knows how long after it was left out.

Yelp
This is my first time at their new location - less than 10 minute walk from the old location. Worth the trek here. This is a huge space that they share with another restaurant called Vaibhav. Pesarattu upma - as delicious as it always was. 5/5 Sada dosa - too oily but the coconut chutney and sambhar were great. 3/5 Kanchivaram idli - fake news. This more of a masala idli and NOT a kanchivaram idli. 2/5 MadrAs coffee - has a hint of chicory but not filter coffee. Too milk and not strong. 1/5 Chutney - upon asking they brought out a sampler of other house chutneys - two versions of tomato chutney that were delicious. Peanut chutney was too sweet for me. I miss the vibe of the old spot but I can live with this location as long as their chutneys are fresh.

Yelp
Arrive early, between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., any Saturday or Sunday to experience tasty, varied food and memorable pleasant surroundings, including diners and staff. Among the diners meet many children, some still conveyed and carried by mothers and fathers. Some familiar individual diners recognizable from a previous visit reappear. Nice to see their familiar postures and faces. Every diner's well-designed apparel speaks authentic culture background and also unique individuality. Waitpersons continue to carefully observe customers and meet their needs softly and efficiently. One particular server, the most petite and focused of all the waitpersons, catches and re-catches repeat customers' eyes. Her own eyes and server skills cover the entire Sapthagiri field each and every buffet morning. For this beautiful scene/field, buffet prices are more than fair and include dosa, idly, poori and more. All dishes are vegetarian. Meet the plentiful table space to explore the buffet selection.
google avatar

Linh Q.

Yelp
Unfortunately, my partner and I couldn't finish dinner here. We were sat outside, where mosquitoes relentlessly bit us many times. When we asked to sit inside, the server and manager said no because it was a vegetarian-only area. Instead, they kept persisting on setting another table for us outside (less than 5 feet away from our current table). It was a stressful situation trying to explain that wasn't a viable solution, just to have the manager tell us that "it's fine". Needless to say, we had to leave before our food arrived. The customer service was extremely shocking and ill-mannered, as I tried to be fair and considerate the entire time. This place may be great to have take-out, but I'd never want anyone to go through the same dine-in experience as us.

Prarthana S.

Yelp
Good food. Not extremely over priced. Manchurian was slightly sweet. We also had North Indian thali and Paper dosa. Both were good
google avatar

Sne G.

Yelp
Tried the weekend breakfast buffet. I give it three stars coz it is value for money ! You get what you pay for. The buffet has idly, dosa, Bonda, Puri and Pongal !! Overall decent flavors and quality.
google avatar

George B.

Yelp
The food is delicious, but the service is horrible . You'll be waiting for a while if you're looking to be seated . Just grab an open table and sit down. After that it'll be A another long wait for someone to take your order. Once your order is placed the food does come out pretty quickly. And the food actually tastes great . I ordered the plain paper dosa and it was good, but a little too oily. the sambar was not the best , but i was only interested in the coconut chutney and it didn't disappoint. When the time comes for the check and you ask for it , it never comes. You are better off walking to the counter to settle the bill. Another warning , be prepared to have curry spilled on you. This happened twice to one guy yesterday evening.
google avatar

Nandana N.

Yelp
This is the best South Indian food I've had in a long time and I've had plenty. I ordered medu vada, butter masala dosa and mango lassi. Didn't like the vadas that much, they were okay. Loved the butter masala dosa. Flavorful filling and just the right amount of butter. Ask for ginger chutney as they usually give only the coconut chutney and Sambar with your order. Loved the mango lassi too. I went on a Dosa and chaat night and it seemed like a lot of work and time to stand in line and get the dosas and stuff so I just ordered from the menu. Next time, I'd avoid going on this day as the service was slow because of the dosa night. All in all, a very good experience and I'd go again.
google avatar

Ananda S.

Yelp
This restaurant is consistent in its quality - pretty decent taste and quantity. The service can be better though.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
this is my favorite Indian restaurant in New Jersey. I recommend the dosas or a thali platter. You can't lose ordering either one!
google avatar

Michelle O.

Yelp
Consistently good dosa place. Dosa is one of the things that I never take out/deliver because they lose their crispiness if not eaten immediately. I've been coming to Sapthagiri to get their dosas year after year. Dosas are served with a variety of dipping sauces. Onion Chili Masala Dosa: Super crispy and thin dosa filled with potatoes. My favourite. Mysore Masala Dosa: Texture wise is good, but it was too sour for my taste.
google avatar

Yelp
Attitude is something we as customers take it for granted. When it is served right, we don't realize and only when a business shows the other side to us, we realize it actually exists. It was almost before close of business hours, we placed an order through Grubhub and called Sapthagiri to confirm if they will be able to fulfill the the order and they confirmed they would. We started waiting from 9.45 till 10.25 without a complaint. Then we started doing the waiting game and calling them multiple times, that the driver hadn't arrived. It was not until 11.10 that the driver finally showed up. We ordered the North Indian Thali and to our complete disappointment most of the rice had spilled inside the paper bag, due to a broken styrofoam box. We called the restaurant to complain and instead of apologizing, the first thing he said was 'Let me talk to the driver and get back'. He called back and said that the driver told him there was no rice spilled in the car. He clearly didn't care that there was an unsatisfied customer on the other side, but have his hands clean. We indicated him that there's difference between rice spilled inside the bag and outside of it and there was no necessity for him to validate with the Grubhub driver about a starving customer, at wee hours. We had to send him the picture on how supremely the food was packed and sent and how it ruined a dinner at 11 in the night. It's more than 2 weeks and we are still waiting for Sapthagiri to get back to us, after their 'We'll check and get back to you on this'. Good luck with your astounding customer service!

Yelp
Went to the weekend buffet on saturday. Idlis were cold and dry Upma was cold and dry. Pooris were weird. The were sliced up into strange bite sized pieces and there were't enough for everyone anr not being refilled often enough. A bad experience overall.
google avatar

Sanchit K.

Yelp
I mostly visit this place for their Dosas and they are really good. The only thing I believe they should improve is the quantity of potato bhaaji they add in masala Dosa, though their coconut chutney and sambhar are top notch the other chutney isn't upto the mark. You definitely feel the satisfaction but I want to try out other items on their menu.

Jay S.

Yelp
Consistently good food keeps me coming back. However the servers who don't write the orders down have forgotten dishes on two separate occasions now which was a bit disappointing. Maybe consider not memorizing the order but instead just write them down. Overall solid joint.
google avatar

Asma A.

Yelp
Amazing price for this chaat buffet on wednesday night, 12.99$ It has bhelpuri, paani-puri, pav bhaji, pakora, biryani, idli sambhar and halwa. Special mention to the guy who makes dosas and uttapam and delivers them to your table- RaMANDEEP. He is very courteous and makes yummy dishes. I wish they include chai in their buffet. Try to get their early. It gets really busy around 8 pm
google avatar

Huw P.

Yelp
Amazing Indian Vegetarian, this is a no frills place do t expect white table cloths here, lots of great vegan and vegetarian Curry's we had the buffet lunch and were v happy it comes with a dosa that you need to ask for, go with open eyes and an empty stomach and you will enjoy, NOT a BYO due to religious reasons
google avatar

Yelp
The first time I went to Sapthagiri was in 2015 when I moved to Jersey City. My friends helped me move in, and I offered to treat everyone for lunch. We went, and the food was fantastic, and the service was attentive and friendly. Also, the portions are MASSIVE. If you go, make sure you're good and hungry, because the staff will make sure that you get plenty of great tasting food! Their rava masala dosa is excellent. Super crispy on the outside, and lacy and delicate. Strong enough to pick up the potato filling or coconut chatni. Another great choice is the veg uttapam. Thick and hearty, but still super crispy on the outside, and not just the edges! Also, when you order a dosa, they bring out not only the sambhar and coconut chatni, they also bring out a trio of other chatnis: peanut, tomato, and ginger. All three are varying levels of spicy, and are very tasty to complement your meal. Vegan options are clearly marked on the menu, and if you ask the server to make sure that everything is vegan, they will let the kitchen know. Also, the wait staff all know the menu very well. If you ask questions about a particular item, they'll know what's in the dish, so if you dislike a certain thing (like bell pepper or cilantro), they'll tell you that "_____ has that ingredient. If you want to avoid it, I'd suggest getting _____." I always go there with friends who haven't tried South Indian food yet, because I feel like it's a good solid introduction to the cuisine!
google avatar

Yelp
Sapthagiri is *the* place to go to for South Indian food around NYC, apart from Ganesh Temple Canteen (not a fan of Saravana Bhavan). I live around the Jsq area, and both me and the gf pay them a visit whenever we get a hankering for Dosa, idli and the likes. A few pro tips: Dont go for the buffet, it's mediocre. As is the sambar. Try their kanchipuram idli. You don't get it in many places, and sapthagiri makes it very well. Get a refill of the white coconut chutney... Freaking awesome. If you get idli, make sure they give the trio of chutneys. While the tomato chutney is ok, the spicy ginger and yogurt ones are delicious!! Very unique, I haven't had them anywhere else.

Jeroo D.

Yelp
The delivery "stinks". I ordered food via grubhub. You get a message the restaurant takes care of it's own delivery. First the driver phones and says that he doesn't have my food because it wasn't ready and another driver will deliver in 10 - 15 mins. I call the restaurant and the person states that the driver is arriving in 15 mins. I call 20 mins later and the person says the driver delivered the food to the wrong address and the food should arrive in 15-20 mins. In the meantime - no apologies - nothing. The order was placed at 12:19 and it's now 1.55 pm and there's still no food. Order at your risk you may get lucky !!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is very mis-managed. Very bad service. Nobody knows what they are doing. The tables are empty yet the plates are not being picked up and the customer is kept waiting for very long. Nobody takes your order unless you call them out several times. Wonder how this restaurant has so many reviews. Seems very unhygienic too. Look at the fresh water glass provided to us.

Seado R.

Yelp
The workers are very shady...everyone gives a different price. Sugar cane juice was out of a can and tasted terrible. The workers lied and stated they made the sugar cane juice fresh.
google avatar

Shruti S.

Yelp
I have always ordered out from Sapthagiri. The food tastes good and very simple. I love that they have vegan options. My favorite is definitely the chole bhature, the portion is very generous and so good!
google avatar

Nick P.

Yelp
The food at Sapthagiri is fantastic, really amazing flavors that are very true to authentic Indian food. The portions are reasonable and the cost is good. I would definately give this restaurant a 5 Star rating based on the food alone. Service: The first issue was they brought the entree out for one of our group way early. We expected the remainder of the food to follow but there was a good 15-20 minute delay to the next few dishes. All told it was about 30 minutes from the first entree to the last entree while food was getting cold as people were waiting. The second issue was that they diddnt have rice made and made us wait more while they made a batch. An Asian restaurant really has no excuse to not have rice prepared ahead of time. Tact: Just before we were leaving a dish was dropped behind two of us, getting curry all over my coat and on my back, arm and hair as well as one of our group next to me. The bus boy apologized once and took my coat to wipe it off but that was it. No care that it was on our person or any apology from the manager. Good food but poor operation: 3/5 stars
google avatar

Saumil J.

Yelp
Want to get bill slammed on the table? Manager ignoring like your crush? And hear "If you want you can cancel your order"? And yes, don't expect 'sorry', but you can expect 'mosquito' in food. All this treatment for simply inquiring about the food ordered 40 mins ago. The attitude of having housefull restaurant is seen on the fave of the staff, giving a feeling that they are serving food for 'free'. Since the merger of Vaibhav and Saptagiri, they share the same vessels and utensils for veg and non-veg food.
google avatar

Priya S.

Yelp
So firstly they advertise outdoor seating and they do not have outdoor seating. We had the pakora which was pretty good. Pondicherry dosa was good as well. Coffee is servers piping hot in a glass cup- I'm going to advice they buy some mugs. Overall good food but they shoukd improve their service
google avatar

Shyam K.

Yelp
Authentic tasting South Indian food that tasted like home. I ordered the South Indian Thali and it came with 5 curries, all of which were delicious. The rasam and the okra were particularly awesome. The only item that I thought could have been a bit better was the payasam, which was a bit liquidy but still delicious!
google avatar

Bhavnit K.

Yelp
Great place for Vegetarians, they have all kind of vegetarian Indian food. The staff is young Indian kids, should have some experience. We ordered paneer tikka, mysore masala dosa, puri bhaji and chilli chaat. Paneer tikka - 2.5/5 It was very oily, has more vegetables than Paneer. Taste-wise it was okay. Mysore masala Dosa - 4/5 thin paper dosa with stuffing inside, tasted good with chutneys and sambhar(unlimited). Puri Bhaji - 4/5 it was the best dish from our order. The aloo sabji was very delicious. Chilli chaat - 3/5 it has fried chili with yogurt, mint and tamarind chutney. Tasted fine. Nothing special as chaat. Overall, it was fine. But being an Indian, I felt not satisfied with food.
google avatar

Ronak P.

Yelp
Oh boy! The rava masala dosa is a real big deal. I love the way they packed and presentation. Loved the taste of dosa and also tried pav bhaji style dosa but was a bit off and can be improved as too much of spices. One recommendation I would give is you can give more sambhar and your coconut chutney didn't taste so good can be improved

Yelp
Excellent brunch spot. We keep coming here for the weekend South Indian breakfast buffet. It's from 8am-11 am. Buffet includes- idlli, crispy vada with Sambhar along with 4-5 types of chutneys, poori bhaji , upma and you can order the DOSa too and not too forget the masala chai + filter coffee. Great deal all for $9.99 + tax. Better get here early it gets crowded by 10 am.

Yelp
Based in New Jersey!! This place is one of the most famous food for pure veg food in NJ. So I always wanted to try Dosa and Idly, finally I got in this restaurant. It was super good and tasty like "WOT WOT". This place is known as a South Indian street food which is extra bonus for everyone. And big plus is that, location is in fabulous shape, it's all about Indian food like more than 50 restaurants in a row. Whoever want to try Dosa in NJ I would recommend this place. Trust me you won't be disappoint 0_@

Yelp
We had the breakfast buffet on a Saturday morning. Its great that this is the only place that opens at 8 am in the morning. Food wise dosas are good ,poori bhaji was good. The rest of the food didn't taste fresh even though it is a weekend.
