The 7 Best Pupusas In SF

"The biggest (literally) draw to Sarita’s Grill & Beer in the Mission is their $9.50 “crazy” pupusa. It’s about the size of a face, and filled with cheese, beans, pork, loroco, chicken, shrimp, zucchini, spinach, and jalapeño. In other words, every single filling on the menu. Taking a bite into this behemoth can be an overwhelmingly rich experience—but for anyone curious about trying a dish you can’t get anywhere else in the city, you should order it. If you’re looking for something less gargantuan, the other pupusa options are solid and generously cheesy. " - ricky rodriguez, julia chen 1, patrick wong

Sarita's Grill & Beer Review - Mission - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"When you look at the menu at this Salvadoran spot in the Mission, one thing might stick out to you: the “crazy” pupusa. This thing is about double the price of any others on the menu at $9.50 and is filled with everything. You heard that right, every filling on their list is in this pupusa. We’re talking cheese, beans, pork, loroco, chicken, shrimp, zucchini, spinach, and jalapeño. If you’re overwhelmed just reading that list, we’re with you, but if you’re curious, this one-of-a-kind pupusa is something that you should try at least once. It’s a tasty, yet formidable rich eating experience that you might not choose to go through again, but at least you can say you tried it. And if you’re looking for something that’s not a pupusa, go for the Salvadoran bistec. It’s a tender piece of flank steak loaded up with red peppers and onions, served with fluffy rice and creamy refried beans. photo credit: Ricky Rodriguez" - Ricky Rodriguez

First rule of life, always go with your gut instinct. Second rule of life, if you don't go with your gut instinct, your gut is likely to pay the price. Today I didn't listen to my inner voice. We tried only three dishes Guacamole and Chips Yucca and Pork Grilled Hen with rice. From the top. The guacamole was so heavy and thick and served up a chip that tasted and looked like a Doritos chip. Sad and not tasty at all. The yucca root was nice, crisp yet tender and the pork cooked to perfection but that dish misses a simple dipping sauce. For example a lime with pepper dipping sauce would go along way and make the dish taste lighter. The grilled Hen, mmmh I think that hen died of thirst as it was about as dry as you could serve up a bird of any kind. The rice was alright but the veggies...sad . Service is alright and friendly, I kinda felt sorry for our waiter as it seemed she was working the front and the back and the kitchen all by herself.

So happy I discovered this place a few weeks ago in the city when we were feeling a bit hungry! I grabbed the pupusa combo (don't remember the kinds ) with rice and beans. And wow, the rice and beans were great! The prices were also very reasonable. The space itself is roomy with TVs! I also love that they have a happy hour!

Google
Holy delicious pupusa! This place was so good. Get ALL the pupusas. I preferred the rice flour, since the corn floor had a strong corn taste, but both are good (and gluten free!). Also the canoas was SOOO GOOD. It's not super sweet, even though covered with sweetened condensed milk & cinnamon. I've never heard of it, and now it shall haunt my dreams.

Google
We came on a Saturday night and the place was pretty empty. Everything was so yummy! My kids loved the broth of the soup which was so flavorful! The canoa and crazy corn were delicious. Every papusa we tried was good! Don't miss trying this place. It will quickly be a new fav.

Saritas Grill and Beer Salvadorean Restaurant is more than Pupusas! There are a lot of choices to pick from this delicious Salvadorean Cuisine. Experience: Partner and I went to try this new restaurant and were excited to try it out, we were expecting good food and all we have to say it excelled our expectations! 💯 on flavor, texture, food readiness and smell! • There is a nice corner spot to take great selfies by the way😁 Food: We ordered the followings: Crazy Corn(Elote loco), Crazy Pupusa (Pupusa Loca), Botana, Fresco de Arrayan(Arrayan beverage) and Chia Beverage(a mix of lemonade with chia and others ingredients really good!) •Food was so fast to get to the table! We ate the Crazy corn and it was 10/10! •Botana Was so good, it has meat, chicken, shrimps, fried tortilla, yuca(fried cassaba), lettuce, sausage and other things I have forgotten. 10/10 it was for my partner but ended up eating us two! Was a big plate fully of meat, shrimp, chicken and others good. We liked this botana because they put an extremely good amount of meats and shrimps and all the other favs and not filled with tortillas only compared to other places where they give you botana but packed with tortilla. This Botana hands down the best one we have ever had. •Last but not least Pupusas!: If you ever wonder how pupusas taste like in El Salvador, this is the one that is going to taste just like the ones from El Salvador, the taste, the smell, the quantity of filling that these pupusas have on this restaurant are the best ones that we have ever tried! •We are pupusas lovers and have been in all pupusas places in all around San Francisco and other cities in California and out of Cali and the best ones are from Sarita’s Grill and Beer. There is something about these pupusas, is the smell and taste of home made pupusas by hard worker people that know what they are doing providing the best quality on food to their clients. The masa is well cooked on point, the edges of the pupusas are incredibly good filled with food not like others pupuserias near by that are completely filled with masa instead of what it needs to be in it. Hygiene is great! These people take their business seriously and can see how clean they are. •Beverages: There is a variety of choices! My favorite is Arrayan and my partners favorite is Chia. Both of them were on point 10/10 just like how they make it in El Salvador, the authentic saldadorean flavor is in this restaurant. Conclusion: •This is the best salvadorean places to eat, prices are great, food taste is amazingly good, environment is clean and smell good, really nice decorations around, music is great, family owners are amazing and kind. I prefer this Salvadorean much better than pasitas or balompie or any other salvadorean restaurant here in the bay. Thinking on coming back again? •Of course yes! I am surprised of how good this food is, this is a gem in all mission district and I dare myself to say in all bay area. Thanks Nathalie, Ashley and family for this great restaurant!

We went on a Sunday and got seated right away. Service was great. The food took a while to come out but it wasn’t a problem for my husband & I. We really loved the pupusas!

Charles Carleton

Google
The papusas are yummy, the plantains are perfect, great, the service is friendly, and the place usually has open tables at all times. A perfect choice on nights when Valencia street is too crowded and you need a last minute option.

Google
Great pupusas at a super reasonable price. Will definitely come back for lunch 🩷 the “crazy” pupusa is HUGE (see half eaten pic). Loved the pupusa combo and that the beans are vegetarian friendly. We left super full!

Yelp
Tried this place with a friend and it is now one of my favorite spots for pupusas. It wasn't too busy inside and was easy to find a table. The service was fast and easy to order food and drinks. Pupusas come in many different flavors and was fast to come out of the kitchen. Really loved the space of the restaurant compared to other places. Will definitely be going here again

Yelp
One of my choices to go to is which my friend decided. Went here for the first time. Love the place. A lot better than the restaurant that it used to be. Love their menu selections. Reasonable price. Was not sure of their pupusas and I have to say they are very good. Not messy and not greasy. Impressed and went in the afternoon. Would like to come back here again.

Yelp
This place was great! We ordered pupusas and carne asada to go and it was piping hot and SO delicious!! Best pupusas we've had in SF for sure. The lady who worked there was really nice, and the decor was great, too. Next time I'll try to take a picture of the food before we scarf it all down!

Yelp
Today we came here for lunch and let me just say we were all pleasantly surprised at how amazing the food tasted! When we first walked In the place was empty which at lunch time could be a bad sign so needless to say my workmates and I were fairly nervous about the lack of clientele. Once we got seated there was more activity bustling about. Our waitress was really great and she was very attentive. The food took a little longer than we were anticipating but it was well worth the wait. We ordered a variety of food. I got the chicken wings that tasted so crunchy and delicious! My boss ordered the fried chicken and fries, we got the ceviche which was super fresh and the sopes were hot and fried to perfection! This place is honestly so cute inside with a fun little vibe! We will be back again soon!

Yelp
Opening a resto in the city is crazy and takes a lot of balls. There's an upcoming resto in The Mission that's been in the works since 2016 and still hasn't opened....that's how crazy it is. So, opening your own resto in the city at the age of 21 is crazy impressive and unheard of...until now (at least to me). Read about a young entrepreneur opening her first resto: Sarita's Grill & Bar so had to come and support. They're currently open for takeout and dine-in. No outdoor seating. M E N U Salvadoran Cuisine with a touch of Mexican - apps, cebiche, salads, soups, breakfast dishes, pupusas, entrees, (e.g. milanesa, alambre, salvadoran bistec-style steak), and taqueria items (tacos, burritos, etc). For drinks, they have agua fresca, soda, and beer. QR menu only so sorry no pics. F O O D * Pupusas: http://tinyurl.com/hv39a6fj Hot off the griddle, the thick corn cakes were filled with hot, oozy cheese. So much cheese that the seams burst when picked up. I enjoyed the crispy, caramelized cheese edges. Served with a side of tangy curtido (pickled cabbage slaw) and salsa roja (bottled). --Cheese & Loroco ($4.75) Loroco is an edible flower bud used in Central American food. It gives a nice tang to balance the richness of the cheese. --Pork, beans, and cheese ($4.75) Hearty combo of shredded pork, creamy refried beans, and melty cheese. The fresh bite of the curtido and mild spice of the salsa roja helped cut through the saltiness. * Pollo Guisado: Stewed Chicken ($17.99): http://tinyurl.com/45pk2hjs The stewed rotisserie (?) chicken leg was tender and salty with potatoes and carrots. Served with your choice of two sides + garden salad. I choose arroz (fluffy rice) and frijoles refritos (creamy refried beans). It also comes with two Salvadoran corn tortillas, similar to an unfilled pupusa. S E R V I C E Service is kind and gracious. Visited during off peak hours so it was pretty quiet with prompt food service. Keep in mind, pupusas usually take awhile (~15-20 minutes). It's a family affair with the owner's mom and sister in the kitchen. A M B I A N C E Low-key sleek with 10-12 tables, high-tops, bar seating, and elaborate gold pendant chandeliers. P A R K I N G Very challenging street parking but there's garage a block away on 21st and Bartlett. Overall, Sarita's Grill & Bar is off to a good start. Props to the young entrepreneur for opening her first resto in one of the toughest foodie cities.

Yelp
Large portion, friendly service, nice ambiance, good fresh food. Will return. We arrived on a Sunday evening around 7 and was promptly seated. The grilled chicken was done perfectly and the pupusas were pretty good too.

Yelp
Checked this place out after after SF Carnaval. We were looking for a place with elote and Sarita's popped up. I tried a bean and cheese pupusa, a chicken pupusa, and the crazy corn. The pupusas were delicious. I'm glad I tried the crazy corn, but I wouldn't get again. It had mustard and ketchup, along with Mayo and cheese. Mayo and cheese are standards but I thought the ketchup was hot sauce and didn't realize the mustard until taking a bite. It was an interesting taste but not for me. If they offered regular elote, I think that would be a better option. My date also had the crazy corn as well as the crazy pupusa. He loved the crazy pupusa (has all the pupusa ingredients). The inside was super cute, they did a good job renovating from an Indian restaurant. The service was ok. Good in the beginning, but they got busy and we had to track down a server for our check. Overall a great meal and I highly recommend you checking it out!

Yelp
I saw this El Salvadorian restaurant opened not too long ago. I wanted to try something besides pupusas so I ordered a chicken milanesa. The breading pretty much reminds me of something similar, country fried steak, but with chicken instead. Pretty crispy batter with chicken that wasn't greasy at all. The portion was big so I felt full after finishing up the meal. There were several choices of sides to choose from and ordered French fries and mashed potatoes. Service was quick and friendly too.

Ava D.

Yelp
The food is so fresh and full of flavor! I will continue to come back for the pupusas and chicken soup.

Yelp
I love this place! A relaxed environment with fun music, friendly staff, comfortable seating and of course the food! Some nights there is nothing more perfect than a cheese papusa and draught beer. You can come here with big parties or just yourself.

Yelp
Scarfed down our food before I snapped a pic but we'll be back in no time! Everything was soo tasty. We ordered: Pupusas Revueltas - 10/10, some of the best I've had in the city. Amazing flavor from the filling to the curtido and salsa. Yuca Frita y Chicharrón, Horchata, Casamiento - 10/10, so fresh and flavorful Service was very friendly as well!
google avatar

Karla_fernanda V.

Yelp
The pupusas were so cheesy and well stuffed! Atole was good, I just wish they would've put some of the actual grain in it, but Ouuu the milk empanada was bombbbb.com Costumer service was great, server was friendly and patient. Great place to get work done too. Restrooms were clean and not smelly at all.
google avatar

Edwin M.

Yelp
I had a great time having dinner with my friends. Awesome costumer service. The food was delicious! The best pupusas in San Francisco.
google avatar

Manuel Y.

Yelp
So, lets me start by saying that I am from El Salvador and I am a "foodie". I heard about Sarita's opening a few weeks back so I decided to try it (been there 2 times now) We have tried the: pupusas Sopa de pollo (chicken soup) Sopa de res (beef soup) Yuca on chicharron ( fried yuca + friend pork) Horchata Empanadas And everything, everything was delicious. It was even better than most places back in El Salvador... no BS The curtido and salsa that comes with the pupusas was so on point. This makes or breaks when eating a pupusa...trust me on this one. They actually toast on site the ingredients for making the Salvadorean style horchata. It's not made from bag powdered like most places. I hope people find out about this new restaurant and it gets the clientele that it deserves.
google avatar

Issa M.

Yelp
Costumer service was amazing, the server is so kind and friendly. The pupusas were so cheesy and well stuffed Atol was good, I just wish they would've put some of the corn grain in it, but the milk empanadas were bomb also they not stingy with the drinks (Jamaica, chia, arrayan, horchata etc.) Restrooms are clean and kind of far from the kitchen area. Great place to catch up with friends and take some pictures.
google avatar

Mellissa B.

Yelp
Ambiance was cute. Staff was friendly and attentive. Portions were huge. We tried fried chicken plate, which came with home made tortillas and two sides, spinach pork and chicken pupusas, and the guacamole and chips. Everything was delicious. It was very quiet on a Sunday lunch. We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I stumbled into this place late on a Wednesday evening knowing nothing about the place. Boy am I glad I did! The food is amazing. The prices super reasonable and the service was great... I guess they are new having only been open for 3 months.. this is a no brainer. Go eat and enjoy. Get hooked like me!
google avatar

Yelp
Food, service and ambiance was great! Highly recommend Pupusas are the best, not oily , very delicious just how I love them. Pair it with beef soup and you've got a great combo.

Yelp
Delicious new pupusa spot in the Mission. Came here after reading about the owner's Salvadoran roots and passion for cooking (shoutout to Mission Local!), and it did not disappoint. I tried the 2-pupusa combination (1 pork & cheese, 1 shrimp), which comes with a side of curtido, rice, and refried beans. Overall, I found this to be a great value (comparable to other pupusa joints in the area), and the pupusas were large and filling. Everything was fresh, though the pork & cheese, and believe it or not the side of rice were standouts. I don't know how they season the rice, but it's delicious, definitely elevated above your typical afterthought of white mush. I also tried their side of "crazy corn," which, as far as I could tell, was just corn on the cob drizzled with ketchup, mustard, and cotija (?) cheese. This was ok, a little odd, and a bit pricey at $5. Would skip that next time. But I'll definitely be back for more pupusas, and to try some of the other Salvadoran delights on the menu!
google avatar

Steve F.

Yelp
If you like delicious Salvadoran food (besides President Bukele) then Sarita's is a MUST if you're in San Francisco. Their pupusas are delicious, well-cooked and amazing. Their instagramable decor is aesthetically pleasing. Great date spot. Nice place to take the kids. 5 out of 5!!!

Yelp
We had a lovely experience here on a Sunday evening. Tasty papusas, cute interior, and very nice customer service. Would come back! :)

Yelp
Great salvi spot on Valencia!!! I ordered the combo that came with two pupusas and sopa de res, my friend ordered breakfast- eggs, beans, plantains and cheese. Came with REAL salvadorean tortillas. The pupusas were perfect and the cheese pull was incredible. (Loroco y revuelta) The soup was flavored really well and the beef was tender. Nice spot!! The waitress was also very friendly and sweet.

William E.

Yelp
OMG BEST PUPUSAS IN SAN FRANCISCO, no he probado pupusas tan autenticas como estas... desde que vine a gringolandia jamás probe unas pupusas con el toque salvadoreño! The service from the servers was great. The environment was so great with music and a couple of drinks. 100% recommended!

Kate P.

Yelp
My husband and I keep going back to this place the food is so good. The best thing is the chicken soup and it's so much food. You get a big piece of grilled chicken (that is so delicious) and rice and salad along with the soup. Pupusas are great also. I always get it to go too and it's two meals. Great prices, great staff, good beer selection. Ideal locale on Valencia street in the mission.

Haven D.

Yelp
Such a warm, welcoming spot with the best pupusas I've had in the city! Great new addition to Valencia Street. I wish them well.

Yelp
I really liked this restaurant. Great food and super nice family. I really hope it is successful,,

Andrew M.

Yelp
I came for the caldo de pollo, but fell in love with their pupusas! I wasn't even thinking of having pupusas, but Sarita's are extra large ~10"(?) and with the lovey crispy bits of cheese on the outside, great curtido [I miss the fennel, knowing not everyone loves it...]. As for the filling, they have the absolute best loroco [green buds similar to capers in flavor but milder]. Definitely recommend the chicken caldo/soup combination. Our server was amazing, and we are looking forward to coming back again soon!

Diane M.

Yelp
Awesome experience! Nataly is the best and steered us to great choices. 100% recommend

Yelp
Delicious! We had pupusas (bean and cheese, jalapeño, pork and cheese) and chicken soup. Loved everything, including the service and prices. I hope more people find this new restaurant and support it. Highly recommended.

Nors P.

Yelp
The pupusas are so good. Best I have ever had. Edge to edge filling- really thin masa. Super friendly service, great place to meet a group or friends and relax over delicious food. Kid friendly. They have high chairs!
google avatar

Keith K.

Yelp
A great addition to the neighborhood! The pupusas are on point, and the stewed chicken was great as well. The beef soup was also excellent, especially on a cold night. Bonus points for Bare Bottle taps, generous portions, and fair prices.

Jessica B.

Yelp
I love pupusas. I love these pupusas. I love Sarita's. I was pretty thrilled to see a new El Salvadoran restaurant open in the neighborhood, especially a spot that's open late (11 pm on the weekends, 10 pm on weekdays. Yup, that's late for sleepy SF). We had the bean, cheese, and loroco; jalapeño and cheese; and shrimp pupusas. Each was pillowy, cheesy perfection. I don't know how they do it, but the pupusas here feel a lot lighter and fresher than others I've had. The casamiento and nance juice were perfect accompaniments. Excited to come back and try their breakfast, antojitos, and burritos. If the delicious food isn't enough to bring you in, Sarita's is also female-owned and operated. The owner is super sweet and runs the restaurant with her mom and sister. There's a lot of love in this restaurant and there's lots to love about it.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Great new affordable restaurant with large portions! I had the pupusa (chicken and cheese and bean and cheese) combo. The salsa and cabbage dressing was incredibly fresh and delicious. My partner had the grilled skewers with a side of veggies. Everything was cooked perfectly and there were plenty of leftovers. The service was friendly and helpful. If you wanted to go out to dinner and don't want to spend a ton of money this is a great spot to check out.

Yelp
New favorite place for Salvadoran food since Los Amigos on Valencia closed. Service is really nice and the place is really cute.

Yelp
great food, even greater service, it feels real hommy, I've made it my weekend go to, you will love it 5+ stars

Yelp
Delicious food and great service, I have been at this place a few times and already had the carne asada, breakfast tipico, delicious pupusas, the salmon, the grilled chicken and soup

A W R.

Yelp
OK... So I'm a fish taco junkie. I like to try a little bit of everything but the fish tacos are my new fav. They're open late and always come through. Great service and excellent food. Thanks again, I'll probably see you guys a few times this week. One of my new favorite spots.

Halle S.

Yelp
We have had brunch in the restaurant and ordered pupusas to go. Everything was delicious. We ordered the pupusa combos in house when my in-laws came to town. The pupusas have a great filling-to-masa ratio (unlike a certain other well-known pupusaria where the masa has overtaken the filling) and were hot and crispy. The curtido was perfect and they brought more of it when requested. The salsa also very good. One of our party ordered the Sopa de Res (beef soup) and it was amazing - deeply flavorful broth and lots of vegetables and meat. The pupusa fillings of revueltas was also great flavor, as was the chicken. We also sampled a variety of the vegetarian pupusas. The server was friendly and helpful The take out order was all pupusas and rice and beans and everything travelled well and was equally delicious. Sarita's will be part of our regular rotation!

Yelp
Such nice folks and yummy food!I want them to succeed! Go try them!why do I have to say more than this to get posted??
