The Best Restaurants In Tokyo

"Sasagin is technically an izakaya, but we treat it as a bar because it has one of the largest selections of Japanese sake we’ve ever seen, and you can try them all in the casual setting. They may ask you to order a small plate of food or two, but at some point you’ll want it anyway. The old guy with a mustache here is basically a sake sommelier, and he’s happy to give you suggestions of what to try. It’s in a random part of town, which makes it a great way to escape tourist life." - josh layne

Really fresh sashimi and excellent fish dishes (I recommend the head of sea bream). We liked everything we ate here. They have an incredibly long list of sake selections, and they helped us choose based on our preferences (so if you know nothing about sake, they’ll help you choose!). I called to make a reservation and everything was handled in English. When we got there, copies of the English menu were waiting on the table for us. The staff is super nice and the restaurant is very clean. The decor is a combination of trendy and traditional, giving the interior a rather unique look. It came to just under 20,000 yen among four people, so while it wasn’t necessarily affordable, it also wasn’t astronomical considering how much we consumed and the excellent quality of everything we ate! There was no smoking when we were there (but I don’t know if that’s because smoking isn’t allowed or because no one smoked that night), so it made for a really pleasant night—over four hours of trying out different foods, sake and beer!

One of the best restaurants I’ve been too. This time I will only show pictures of the sake I drank there. It’s one of the finest places to go if you want a master to serve you the best sake in the city. Just let the chef serve you until you drop. When in Tokyo, visit this place, step in and enjoy

Fantastic meal from start to finish with an excellent and affordable sake pairing. We found this izakaya through other glowing reviews online and it did not disappoint in the slightest. The restaurant was very accommodating to us non-Japanese speakers and the owner was very charming and helpful in recommending sakes and food pairings. This is a local gem and we had several other guests remark that we were lucky to have found this place, which we couldn’t agree with more.Recommend the eggplant special, the sashimi trio, agedashi tofu, and tempura. For sake, just give the staff your preferences (I.e. dry vs. sweet, strong vs.diluted) and they will do wonders. Can’t wait to return when we’re next in Tokyo.

We had the best night! We booked in advance (thank you HotPepper and Google Translate) and we said we were English speaking. Staff were friendly and worked hard to accommodate us and they also had English menus ready for us. Food was delicious and every sakè recommendation was perfect. If you’re visiting Tokyo and you love sakè I recommend booking in advance and going here, it’s so good!

Great selection of curated sake. The food is cut above the typical grilled or fried izakaya fare – adventurous palates will appreciate the food

Hands down, one of the best meals we had in Tokyo. In terms of sake selection and expertise, there’s no runner up. If you ask the proprietor for his suggestion, he won’t steer you wrong; he has the best kind of seasoned older gentleman energy. The vibe is the furthest thing from a tourist trap, and evidently very popular with the locals who (naturally) know what’s up. Don’t miss the anago tempura or the pickled squid. My wife and I were there in February for our honeymoon, so it was the perfect time of year to have the oden. Finish with a plum wine to send you off into the night, and you won’t be sorry!

The people here really know their sake. If you like Japanese sake, I definitely recommend this place. It's on the smaller side, but has a great ambiance and they will pick out the perfect sake for you based on your preferences. They tend to be busy, so calling ahead of time is a good idea.
