"Satsuma Cafe is here for you when you want something green, fresh, and not cooked in butter. When you hit that wall, Satsuma Cafe is here for you. This small Bywater cafe serves breakfast and lunch daily and is the place to go for fresh juices, salads, and avocado toast. That said, they also have a great bacon, egg, and cheese, in case richness fatigue hasn’t set in yet. They get mobbed on the weekends, but if you come early enough, grab a seat on their garden patio." - chelsea brasted, megan braden perry
"For people working remote, there’s WeWorks and then there are places like Satsuma in the Bywater. This is a pretty ideal cafe to get some work done over avocado toasts upgraded with whipped feta and spiked with chili oil, or bagels with lox and cream cheese full of caramelized onions. They’ve got a long cushy booth spanning half the restaurant, and a communal high-top that’s perfect for collaboration or coworking—plus, the wifi password is posted in multiple spots, so you can avoid awkwardly going up to the counter if you forget. We adore the cold-pressed fresh juices, and recommend taking one with you on a stroll around the neighborhood. Because hey, you responded to an email on time and even typed up a new one. Pomodoro timer-designated break, please." - megan braden perry
"A funky coffee house and sourdough-pizza place in the Bywater, located on Saint Claude Avenue, this project was driven by chef/owner Clara Yun’s aim to build community and provide a venue for local musicians and artists. Determined to fly under the radar from the start — hence the name — Yun earned a following for her sourdough bread, baked-to-order pizza, tangy Caesar salads, and morning coffee program, but she closed the cafe after less than a year. Yun’s background includes managing positions at the San Francisco Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Solage Hotel in Napa; she is now running an izakaya pop-up called Fukuro on Thursdays through Saturdays." - Beth D’Addono

"A favorite for breakfast and lunch meetups as well as all-day dwellers, Satsuma’s fresh fare leans on vegetables, but also includes plenty of hearty classics, like the green eggs and ham breakfast sandwich or the BLT, which comes with avocado mash, goat cheese, and arugula in addition to the usual. The breakfast burrito, which can also be made vegan, contains breakfast potatoes, roasted poblanos, creamy black beans, cheddar scrambled eggs (or tofu), and avocado mash. It’s also served all day, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m." - Clair Lorell
