The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Year in Los Angeles, 2025 | Eater LA

"Los Angeles’s fall weather can change on a dime. Typically hot October can feel like an entire year of seasons in one day, starting with overcast morning hoodie weather, then cranking up into the 90s by late afternoon. On a particularly cool afternoon, oxtails called me from Studio City’s Sattdown Jamaican Grill. The slow burn of scotch bonnet pepper infuses the oxtails, which get steeped in a hearty and deeply dark roux. I dug into their rice and peas, assortment of broccoli and carrots, and caramelized plantains for what I needed while enjoying the fullness of the weekend. — Mona Holmes, editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest" - Matthew Kang

The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: November 3 | Eater LA

"On a particularly cool afternoon, the oxtail platter called to me from this Studio City staple: tender oxtails in a hearty, deeply dark roux with the slow burn of scotch bonnet pepper, a comforting rendition of a Jamaican and broader Caribbean classic. I dug into rice and peas, an assortment of broccoli and carrots, and caramelized plantains alongside, exactly what I needed to enjoy the fullness of the weekend." - Eater Staff

The Best Caribbean Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Sattdown Jamaican Grill lives in a Studio City shopping center also home to a virtual reality playground, pho shop, and nail salon. Behind its doors, diners will find a modest market selling Jamaican dry and canned goods like ackee and callaloo; a sweet, dried fruit-pocked bread called Easter bun; and some spice blends made in-house — as well as some of the best home-cooked Jamaican food in Los Angeles. Patties served with fillings like jerk chicken and spicy minced beef have a light crust that flakes after caramelizing in the oven. The restaurant, run by chef Tony Hyde and his wife Nini, punches above its weight with deeply spiced, warming flavors in combination plates that include stewed but still-crisp vegetables, plantains, and earthy rice and peas. — Nicole Adlman, cities manager" - Mona Holmes

Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: April 1 | Eater LA

"Tucked into a Studio City shopping center, Sattdown Jamaican Grill doubles as a modest market selling ackee, callaloo, Easter bun, and house spice blends and as a tiny dining spot offering some of the best home-cooked Jamaican food in Los Angeles: flaky, caramelized patties filled with jerk chicken or spicy minced beef; deeply spiced, warming combination plates featuring stewed yet still-crisp vegetables, plantains, and earthy rice and peas; and standout mains like curry goat and barbecue jerk chicken (the latter a slightly lighter but equally satisfying counterpoint to the richness of goat with braised oxtails)." - Eater Staff

Google
Tiny spot with huge flavors! We stopped for dinner and were welcomed so kindly and our food was hot, fresh and amazing. We had the vegan jerk chicken and the oxtail and both were incredible. The oxtail just fell off the bone and the flavor was so rich. The vegan chicken had us both questioning why we ever ate meat 🥰

Leisha S.

Google
We were VERY VERY disappointed in the food. No good comments to write. However; we MUST show some of the disappointment. We ordered a snack curry to try; we were told that the snack is xxx ounces and the meal is xxx ounces, that is the difference in pricing! See pictures. We do not eat bones!! Not sure if any chicken meat was measured however; this is amount of loose bones (no chicken) in a curry snack? Are these bones included in the measurements? The vegetarian Oxtails had to be tossed; awful! The Jerk Chicken Patty not edible; too dry not enough filling for the dough! Jerk chicken TOOOOOOO spicy!!! Extra hot food for favor is good! Hot for no value is bad! Sorry SATTDOWN! We need to stand up and get out!!!!

Wow — what an incredible experience! This Jamaican restaurant is an absolute gem. Every dish was bursting with flavor and authenticity. The jerk chicken was perfectly spiced and juicy, the oxtail was fall-off-the-bone tender, and the rice and peas were the perfect complement. Don’t even get me started on the fried plantains — pure heaven! The atmosphere was warm, vibrant, and full of positive energy. The staff made us feel right at home — so welcoming and genuinely kind. The reggae music, the island-inspired decor, the incredible smells from the kitchen… it all felt like a little escape to Jamaica. I can honestly say this is one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. If you’re looking for bold flavors, good vibes, and food that feeds the soul, this is the place. 10/10 — highly recommend

Google
Food was great, I got the BBQ Jerk chicken and despite all the spice warnings, it truly wasn't spicy, I blasted it with the hot sauce they have on the table. They didnt ask me what spice level I prefer so they probably gave me mild lol but regardless, the flavor was ON POINT. Chicken was juicy and had a beautiful char on it, nice amount of sauce. Beans/rice was cooked perfectly, truly a great find. I was already planning in my head when I'd come back. They have a grocery store attached with great products, including hot sauces. I bought one and its SO TASTY with a great spice.

Google
This is such a dope place! The service was wonderful (I'm sorry I didn't get the name of the girl in the front she was so sweet) and the food was truly amazing!!! We're vegan and made the drive down here to get some of their vegan oxtail plates! It came with rice n peas, plantain and vegetables and the 'oxtail' was soo good. I appreciate vegan options that aren't made of just straight up soy. Flavor was on point and the sauce was so good 😩 It's hella cute inside and they have a bunch of great drinks to purchase there along with sauces, marinades, wellness products and other tings; it's like a whole little store. I'll definitely be back and recommend this place to everyone I know 🙏🏽🖤💛💚

Google
This place was a very pleasant surprise! It's a small place with only a few tables on the side, and a couple tables on the sidewalk, up front. It's also a small market with a limited selection but functional. Parking was difficult in the shopping center, but there seemed to be plenty of parking on the side street. Came for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The food was delicious! We had the jerk chicken and the goat curry. Both came with rice, vegetables, and fried bananas. Very generous portions. One would have been enough for both.

Google
I love their Vegan Lions Mane Oxtail, Chef Tony is the best. They also have delicious Sea Moss Smoothies & Mount Teman Roots hard to find here in the Valley. Love the Staff & Food.

Tiffany G.

Google
Food was absolutely delicious and large portions. The only thing that didn't work for me was that everything was a bit more spicy than I could handle...but I'm also a wimp lol. And there were lots of herb stems that I picked out of my curry goat. But the flavors were wonderful and authentic and service was great. I'd definitely eat there again.

Yelp
Sattdown down Jamaican Grill had the kindest employees and the most tasty food. I ordered for takeout and tried their vegan curry plate and it was so flavorful! I ordered mild, but it was still a little spicy, but I'm extremely weak to any spice levels so this was a personal issue anyone else would enjoy this dish (and I still did with a glass of cold water) :D 5/5. The mac & cheese was delicious and had a crisp top to it, I wish it was a little less oily, but I would definitely order it again 5/5. They have a parking lot, but it is small and very busy.

Yelp
Great food from great man, Tony runs best Jamaican cuisine restaurant you can find in Los Angeles. Every bite very flavorful. Try some jerk chicken and oxtail. You would love it.
google avatar

Dawn C.

Yelp
Amazingly flavorful, fall-off-the-bone oxtail plate, which paired deliciously with the plantain, rice, and pickled veggies.
google avatar

Yelp
First meal today: Oxtail w/rice /sweet plantains/veggies. A generous amount of oxtail will leave you wanting more. Then you find yourself sucking the bone . I usually have leftovers but I ate everything. You cannot put the fork down at Sattdown. I'm in a food coma now, yet I have never been happier. Introduce Sattdown Jamaican Food to your taste buds.

Anna C.

Yelp
Good food! One of my fav places. Ordered 2 jerk chicken plates for $60 and got no gravy on the rice or side. So the food was very dry :( Pls offer people gravy esp when the plates are pricey. Thanks!
google avatar

Ves S.

Yelp
It's been a while since I came so I was surprised when I entered it looked like a convenience store! You order at the counter, and there are a few tables inside and outside. There were quite a bit of food delivery/take out orders. We wanted some oxtail, so we came here and also got the jerk chicken. You can select the heat level but the lowest for the non-vegan and non-seafood is medium. The combo plates come with rice and beans, veggies and plantains. The jerk oxtail was in its own sauce while the jerk chicken was blackened. Consequently while both were "medium" the oxtail had noticeably more heat. Oxtail was quite juicy! Chicken perhaps was too grilled though with some extra burned ends. There is a parking lot but you can also park on the street: metered on Ventura and free (read the signs) on the residential side streets.

Yelp
Ayooo!!! Back at it again! Stumbled upon this cute Jamaican restaurant/market. Food is togo. I only got a Meat Patty, def will return for some oxtails. Patty was one of the best i've had. It was perfectly flaky with just the right amount of spice in the meat filling. Staff was so nice explaining the menu. There is a parking lot and cards are accepted. Come check this place out

Yelp
Jerk chicken, patties and coco bread made for a great Sunday lunch. We also picked up some essentials at the grocery - one of the few places I've found where you can actually buy ackees. Good vibes all around.

Yelp
Excellent fire Jamaican joint! Discovered this little restaurant when I was living in studio city and I have to admit it was definitely hit home. Being from Miami florida Caribbean restaurants are very typical and finding a Jamaican spot in studio city was phenomenal. The jerk chicken is beyond fire, the oxtail is point. They have natural juices as well. I highly recommend this spot to anyone wondering if this place is worth it and let me reassure you that it definitely is . The service is amazing, the ambiance felt like being back home in Miami. Will be coming back soon when I get back to California. Thank you !
google avatar

Yelp
Chef Tony's personal story is one of perseverance and his love for food is apparent in every dish he serves. Great vibe here, felt like I was eating at home. Oxtails goin crazy and jerk chicken is a mandatory dish too cause it's like that! Epic seasonings nudge their way into every bite of flavor. Pull and Stay Eatin' if you want the real deal!

Yelp
I always appreciate Sattdown. The food is ALWAYS super good and VERY plentiful for the price. I am sad I forgot to order my chicken soup but I ordered online and it did not have the option. Nonetheless, I ordered the oxtail and goat combo. I was sad that the food did not come with a festival bread. I thought that was standard but I thought wrong. The oxtail and goat was soooooo good. It was tender and just perfect. The beef patty was good. The cabbage and rice was superb and well seasoned. At first, there was NO spice in the food but then I remembered the sauce they gave me, on the side, and I am so happy it was on the side. Mannnnnnn, that was spicy but sooo good and just perfect. I haven't been inside Sattdown in a Long while because I order to go. But I was happy to see that it now also serves as a grocery store so you can pick up your local Jamaican seasoning that you will not find in the store and that was GREAT. They also still have seats, in the cut, to enjoy your meal. It is very bright and just like home. Clean inside and the staff were super kind. The parking lot still is NOT parking friendly. It is still a hit or miss because it is a plaza of many stores and it's literally get in where you fit in

Yelp
10/10. I'm Dominican and I know Caribbean food. This is authentic Jamaican cuisine--no question. I'm also from NY, so I know what I'm talking about when it comes to good food. The seasoning? Perfect. Just the right amount of spice to wake up your taste buds without overpowering the dish. I got the oxtail and they were generous with the portion. Fall-off-the-bone tender, full of flavor--absolutely worth it. And the banana cream bread pudding? WOW. If you love bananas, do yourself a favor and get that. So. Freaking. Delicious.

Yelp
Hello Yelp , This place has got the freshest wild red snapper in Los Angeles. I'm not too certain on the recipe but I looked at a pic of it caught fresh and placed an order. The prepping and hands on cooking style is out of this world. You have to go try it at Sattdown Jamaican Grill ! It's really good

Yelp
My friend and I were looking for some good Jamaican food and we heard good things about Sattdown! FLAVOR (4.5/5): 1. JAMAICAN PATTY (BEEF): This was by far the highlight of the meal. I would come back just for this. The beef patty was seasoned perfectly and wasn't dry at all. The hot sauce they have at the table is also really good. 2. JAMAICAN PATTY (JERK CHICKEN): The beef patty outshined the chicken patty, which was still good but on the drier side. 3. SATTDOWN'S WINGS (JERK SAUCE): The wings were seasoned and cooked well and I thought that this was a great appetizer to share! 4. JERK CHICKEN DISH: The jerk chicken dish was good and they used the same sauce we picked for their wings. I liked the plantains, but wish they were a little saucier. SERVICE (5/5): Service was good! Family owned and the waiter was super friendly. PARKING (5/5): It's in a strip mall so there's private lot parking. TAKEAWAYS: The star of the show here was really the Beef Jamaican Patty. If it was up to me I would order 10 of these. They're still good if you take them home and pop them in the air fryer! :)

Sadiqua S.

Yelp
Sold me a cold thin crusty chicken patty and a pineapple soda for almost $12. Some of the WORST Jamaican food ever. Lacks authenticity. Also lack freshness ... and unnecessarily expensive.

Yelp
I have driven by this restaurant countless times and didn't realize that a taste from heaven was in my path for the past year. The food is super delicious! We tried both vegan oxtails ( yes, you read this right) Vegan Oxtails , Escovitch Red Snapper, Regular Oxtails and Mac $ Cheese with jerk sauce. Everything was amazing. The owner/Chef truly cares about his customers. One customer wanted to ship a meal out of state because it was so good! The owner agreed to take care of the customer. This is a small restaurant with seating indoors/outdoors. You can even buy some of the seasonings to make you own Jamaican creations at home. Tony, thank you for an amazing meal, conversation, laughs, and hospitality! We are customers for life. #SatDownJamaicanFood

Denise T.

Yelp
I didn't realize it was a grocery store that sold cooked food. The food itself was bland. The space was tiny. And there must have been a cat in the store cause 20 minutes after walking in, I had to take a Zyrtec for the itchy eyes and hives. I can't recommend
google avatar

PJ L.

Yelp
Delicious Jerk Chicken... this place is amazing. I highly recommend it ... I have been to Jamaica many times and they get it right.
google avatar

Cassandra C.

Yelp
I hadn't been there in severely years because I moved but my husband and our kids decided to take a little road trip back . Omg!! The food was absolutely amazing just as I remember so good I had the oxtails and Ackee and salt fish so good chef Tony was there he's so nice the Sattdown is a complete vibe literally the best Jamaican food in the valley

Adriel R.

Yelp
Vegan Review Y'all I drove from LAX to darn near Universal City walk for this and they did not disappoint. The vegan oxtail is amazing the peppers and save on top are really savory. The rice, peas and veggies are so flavorful. I paid extra for the festival bread which omg I wish I had 2 servings of it and the purple drink whew. I'm ready to go today. So I went and I went to order the vegan oxtail and the staff was kind enough to make it but typically I'm told it is not available today. Call ahead to be sure. The food did not disappoint
google avatar

AJ J.

Yelp
Suprised my husband as he had been wanting curry goat and I was having a hard time finding it where we live. Well my research paid off and the evening went great! Service was amazing and we conversed with the owner for quite some time (I forgot his name) and he even gave me a few samples to try since I'm so picky. My husband got the goat and LOVED it! I had no complaints at all about the food at all and I really do not eat Jamaican food. The place is on the small side and a bit cramped; we were able to eat there and had a table in the back. Definitely will bring the Mr back again next time we are in the area
google avatar

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
absolutely enjoyed the food at this little jamaican restaurant/convenience store. the lady at the counter was really pleasant, their music playlist was very fitting. my only complaint would be the oxtails did not have butter beans. other than that, i would highly recommend visiting here for food or to pick up your favorite jamaican pantry staples.

Lydia N.

Yelp
Best food I've eaten in AWHILE! Everything was made with love... you could just tell! They have a great little market too:)

Bashlow1 ..

Yelp
Spoke to owner. But food quality has diminished. Order a lot but it hasn't got better.
google avatar

Danya G.

Yelp
Might have gone on an off day, but tried the beef patty. The crust was great, but the texture of the meat was pretty dry, almost grainy. It was well seasoned though so I'll give it another try!
google avatar

Kimberly H.

Yelp
A little annoyed I ordered food from this restaurant. My usual 2 orders of Jerk chicken and 2 beef patties and Mac n Cheese. My delivery driver comes to my door to a half opened bag and two items. I contact the restaurant hi, I order this a lot and what I ordered is not what I got. The lady was really nice and said I packed the order I said great but I'm missing two items she told me to call Uber eats which I sent them a messages they told me this restaurant doesn't allow refunds or reorders and I'm SOL. This is awful service there needs to be some system in place where the restaurant takes a pic and the pic has to look like what the delivery driver drops off. Very disappointed. Leaving the review on the restaurant because the restaurant is who sets these rules in place.
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
Tried Jamaican food for the first time and I'm so glad it was at this spot! I had the vegan jerk BBQ chik'n and the vegan curry chik'n--both were packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. The spices, texture, and overall vibe of the food were incredible. What really stood out was the hospitality--the owner came by to introduce himself and was genuinely warm and friendly. It made the whole experience even more memorable. Highly recommend checking this place out, especially if you're looking for delicious vegan options!
google avatar

Sanam D.

Yelp
The owner is such a special soul. The food is filled with loved. The vibes are so soulful. Sooooo grateful to have discovered this place. The vegan food is 20/10. I'm dreaming about it the next day.
google avatar

Miriam Y.

Yelp
Coming back here again to fulfill my Jamaican food craving! The jerk chicken is the way to go! The flavor of the chicken is absolutely perfect! Service is fast and a bit rushed. I've never dined in but the place looks like a good mom and pops kinda spot

Ailsa ..

Yelp
As soon as you walk in, it's like you're transported into a shop in Kingston. From corner to corner the shop is blessed with goodies from Jamaica. Guava jam, scotch bonnet hot sauce, dried sea moss, OH MY! I enjoed conversation with the chef Tony, and the wait was not long. For this type of quality, I would have happily waited longer. The serving size was enough to demolish in two separate sittings and I finished full each time! I am definitely going back for company (ackee and salfish was is a cherry on top!!)
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
Exactly what I had hoped for. Succulent jerk chicken perfectly sliced and grilled. Love their plantains, and can't wait ti work my way through the rest of the menu

P N.

Yelp
soooooo delicious!!! fun!! They were having an event. I heard the music and I thought I'm really hungry. Go get some jerk chicken! So glad I did! So glad i did!

Sändra G.

Yelp
Everything went well, besides the food being good tasty (Jamaican Beef Patty & Jerk Chicken Wings) my favourite choice
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
Absolutely the best Jamaican food in Los Angeles. I love eating here and chef Tony is a great cook and very kind. My faves are the oxtails Pattie's and bbq jerk chicken! Also one of the few places with vegan options and Jamaican products to shop! You can get sea moss, spices and cultural culinary items. Def stop by or order on uber !
google avatar

kenyetta h.

Yelp
I will not be back. Worst Jamaican patty I've ever had and I grew up in Florida with Jamaicans. It was hard and not flaky, the filling was completely dry, no flavor, tasted like they scraped hard beef crumbles left over in a pan. It was also cold. The jerk wings had good seasoning but were lukewarm, seemed like they cooked them some other time and threw it in a microwave. I waited 15 min for cold food
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
I've only ordered for delivery but I hope to make it in one day. Food is delicious, I enjoyed the shrimp and my bf enjoyed the goat. I love fried plantains! Order was correct, food is good, no complaints! I saw they have vegan options too for anyone veg!
google avatar

J A.

Yelp
the absolute best jamaican food around. it is always fresh and delicious, and the service is excellent. i love this restaurant....5 stars *****
google avatar

Brittany R.

Yelp
So I ordered the oxtails meal which is a whopping 25 dollars. The food is a little bland and they forgot my Plantains. However The aesthetics appealing, wish I took pictures. I wouldn't return.

Zena R.

Yelp
So good, you won't be disappointed. I really enjoyed it. Ill be going back every week for lunch.
google avatar

Zola J.

Yelp
I order through Postmates and Ainsley's get a delicious meal. Jerk chicken and patty are my go-tos. Always nicely seasoned and spicy with a great flavor. Highly recommend!

Hovo B.

Yelp
Taste was decent but portions for the oxtail were tiny..3 pieces of mainly bone for the price they charge?Ridiculous.
google avatar

Justice K.

Yelp
Overall, the food is alright! Would I return? Probably not! I ordered the jerk chicken. My girlfriend had the oxtail. The jerk chicken was solid, not a whole bit of flavor. Was served with sauce on the side, which didn't add much of anything. However, in my opinion, where they really fell flat was on the rice & peas. It appeared they just used parboiled or parcooked rice. There wasn't ANY flavor imparted on the rice during the cooking process, sadly. Just tasteless. The sautéed vegetables weren't anything to write home about either. Much would have rather had some fried cabbage. The oxtails, on the other hand, were great. Tender. Robust in flavor. Well seasoned. The oxtail gravy/sauce rendered the rice edible for my girlfriend. She also didn't care for the jerk chicken on my plate. Overall, this place is okay. If they took the time to cook the rice & season it properly, 4/5. Until then, 3/5.
google avatar

Alexis C.

Yelp
We were craving oxtails and heard this was the spot. Unfortunately, we didn't agree... the oxtails were just okay. The rice and beans lacked flavor and the plantains were flavorless and dry. We'll give them a shot down the line as they came highly recommended. Perhaps this was an off night? We'll update the review if the next experience is different.
google avatar

Evelyn C.

Yelp
The best Jamaican food in the valley! Yeah I said it! I love me some Caribbean deliciousness and this is where we always go to get that fix. I can't even count the amount of times we've ordered take out from here! I've tried all the spots in the valley and everyone has their opinion on who they think is best, but SATTDOWN is HANDS DOWN my vote! We've gotten pretty much everything on their menu but the last time we ordered was just this week for a special dating anniversary celebration. We've been craving Sattdown for a long time so I surprised my husband with at Sattdown candlelight dinner at home! Not sure if they accidentally gave us a complementary "Fried Festival" or they just added it to be generous, but that was something we've never ordered before and will now be in our rotation because it was so tasty. I was so impressed and it didn't look as good as it tasted for sure! They should continue to give out those samples, because they'll get you hooked! I have 2 little complaints, but they still deserve 5 stars out of 5: they are hard to get ahold of (nobody answers and mailbox is full which could mean they're just THAT BUSY). But because they're hard to get ahold of sometimes we have had to settle with something else for take out quite a few times. JUST TAKE MY MONEY! All of it, always! 2nd tiny complaint is that the fried plantains can be better. They're always dry and I'm so obsessed with plantains that I still ALWAYS order a large side of it every time. It's too plain and needs some sweetness or even some saltiness to make it just right! Please open 7 days a week because we need your food on Sundays and Mondays too! Pretty please?
google avatar

Lys Q.

Yelp
Absolutely the best Jamaican food I've ever had. Ordered twice on DoorDash. First time I got jerk chicken, rice, plantains (amazing)! Second time I ordered Stew chicken, rice, steamed veggies and plantains. Everything is amazing. Thank you Chef!
google avatar

Elvis A.

Yelp
If you've been looking for good Jamaican food then look no further. This is all you need! The food is legit the best I found in LA. I had the jerk chicken and beef Patty, it was absolutely amazing. The seasoning was on point and the food is 10/10. Can't wait to try the oxtail next time!

Alissa Y.

Yelp
Idk how this place gets less than 5 stars! Food is amazing! Favorite is stewed chicken and oxtail Mac and cheese! Also buy all of your jamaican ingredients and health foods such as sea moss and soursop from here! LOVE!!

Bianca lynn J.

Yelp
The rice and beans were dry and the rum cake was not good, I don't recommend it. The curry goat was very flavorful and the vegan oxtails were good yet so was the oxtails and so was the mixed cabbage.. But the prices were outrageous to me. That's just me maybe I am cheap oh and you get a good amount of food though so I guess that makes up for the price nah it's still to high
google avatar

Nikki R.

Yelp
The Jamaican patties and mac and cheese are delicious! Also love the jerk salmon plate with the rice and plantains. Authentic Jamaican places are hard to find, so I definitely recommend giving this place a shot!
