The 33 Best Rio de Janeiro Restaurants | Eater

"While even in a seaside dining capital you can go wrong with fish and seafood, Rio de Janeiro institution Satyricon is always a good choice. Inside you’ll find tanks full of lobsters, oysters, and other mollusks, and an ice bed where the catch of the day rests. Everything comes out of the kitchen in simple, well-prepared dishes like sea bream baked in salt and herbs, shredded king crab served with lemon and oil, and spaghetti alle vongole, which shows off the Italian heritage of owners Marly and Miro Leopardi." - Rafael Tonon

Satyricon

"For seafood-lovers the temptation begins the moment you enter this restaurant with its display of fresh fish and continues with the fish tanks containing lobsters, slipper lobsters and molluscs. The secret of this famous restaurant is its use of the best produce to prepare simple, carefully-considered dishes. Try the Southern King Crab (shredded crab served with lemon and oil) and sea bream in salt, worthy of a Trimalchio banquet. Prepare your body, mind, spirit…and wallet." - Michelin Inspector

Can be better. We order a bottle of wine and around 6 items off the menu. The tuna salad was so dry ! It felt like it was from a can. (Remove from menu or make it better) Everything else was great!! Thank you for the recommendation from the staff

Google
Incredibly disappointing. This was the worst meal I had during my entire week vacation in Rio. The food was awful. My overly priced Tuna was at least an inch raw and overall luke warm. It was unevenly cooked and literally had no seasoning—not even salt. The grilled vegetables were bland and could have been simply thawed frozen vegetables from a bag. Most disappointing, however, was the service. The hosts and wait staff seemed annoyed that we even showed up to the restaurant. They were cold and rude. If this were a fine dining restaurant I would suspect they were pretentious, but unfortunately the food was nothing to be pretentious about.

Google
Scallop au gratin was fine. Small pieces. The steak au poivre was cooked well with a beautiful pepper sauce. The creamed spinach, however, was appalling. Blended green goop with a hint of mint - not at all how it’s supposed to be. Overpriced meal for what it is. Skip.

This place is good. Enjoyed the dishes I got but nothing out of this world

I called up and they said that we’re fully booked, but we still drove down and they had table available. Food was ok. Nothing special, price high and service ok.

Visited in June 2024. Brazil. Rio de Janeiro. Our friends recommended this place as the best spot for seafood. It’s a pretty big restaurant with a huge display of fresh seafood. The interior is simple, but elegant. Food: We tried a bunch of dishes: the lobster Thermidor, which is probably their signature dish since we saw a lot of people ordering it. It’s a big, perfectly cooked lobster in a creamy cheese sauce. Delicious! The lobster inside was juicy and had the perfect texture. We also really liked the seafood soup. It had a ton of seafood in it – it could easily be a main course. The seafood was perfectly cooked and the broth was very rich, perfectly balanced with spices. The chef's signature langoustine appetizer wasn’t our favorite. The sauce was too heavy and kind of overpowered the delicate langoustine flavor. The grilled langoustines weren’t perfectly balanced with spices, although they were very soft and tender. The crab tartare was my favorite dish here – crab, avocado, and sauce. They found the perfect balance of textures and flavors. Service: The service was friendly, and some waiters spoke English, which is a huge plus. Overall: This restaurant is definitely on the pricier side. We enjoyed the food, and almost everything was great. I think this is the perfect place to try fresh seafood, and I recommend it.

Google
We were warmly treated and although we didn’t have a booking we were quickly found a table. The atmosphere was great and the place had a very relaxed and calming vibe. The wine choices were exceptional and the starters we chose were very good and well presented. My partner was not feeling great and asked for the chicken and roast potatoes. It was well cooked but presented a little like the chef was disappointed it was ordered. I had the clam spaghetti which was fantastic.

Yelp
Lovely seafood restaurant in Rio. I loved the mussels in white wine sauce. My seafood fantasy was just okay. Minimal flavor and the fish was overcooked. There is so much delicious food in Rio that I don't think this would be one of my picks again but I did enjoy it. Service was good and cute narrow space.

Yelp
The service was great, seating was easy even though I didn't have reservations, they have a beautiful vast menu. I enjoyed my shrimps very much

Yelp
Not worth the hype at all. The restaurant is nice but stuffy. They'll ask if you want bread and you say yes they will bring a spread of appetizers. It was good but we didn't want it and it ended up being too much food overall. Bread and olive oil are customary in Rio so this was the only restaurant where we had this issue. The beef carpaccio was amazing! Highly recommend it. Sadly, both our fish entrees left us disappointed. They were fresh but had zero flavor compared to all our other meals in Rio. At the price point (30-40 usd) it was not worth it. And aside from price, they weren't enjoyable to eat. I had high hopes for this place but for an expensive dinner it completely missed the mark. The drinks were also average compared to other (less fancy) places.

Yelp
I recently dined at Satyricon and had the fish of the day, paired with peppers, onions, and olives - it was the freshest! This Ipanema gem is an upscale restaurant offering impeccable Italian-Mediterranean seafood. The fish counter and indoor garden add a unique touch to the ambiance. Marly, Miro, and Sandra Leopardi's meticulous selection of fresh seafood is evident. The preparation, using simple yet precise techniques, preserves the true flavors of the ingredients. With certain dishes, table side preparation service is utilized. The variety of fish, crustaceans, and origin of products showcase their dedication!

Yelp
Very high end seafood restaurant. Great service at a reasonable cost. Food was good. We were in a large party and everyone spoke highly of their food. I had the grouper in a caper sauce with shrimp. I was very good. I would say I reduced the rating because the fish had a strong flavor indicating it wasn't as fresh as I would like.

Yelp
The place is clean and looks nice. The service was okay. The staff was not attentive to the table. We had to call someone over multiple times. We got a bottle of wine and it was in a chiller with other wines from other tables. I asked for more wine and they told me it was gone. We found out later that it was not, we still had a half bottle left. For the cost of the dishes, the presentation could be better.

Yelp
Very fresh seafood, and the service is great. There are variety of seafood to choose from you can see the fish on the counter when you walk in. The waiters speak English so it makes it easy to communicate. We had the grill shellfish for two which is about $100, it comes with a lot of food including two lobsters, shrimp and langoustine(which I think they call it crayfish) the grill is lightly seasoned with salt so you get to taste the natural flavor of the seafood itself.

Yelp
I am actually surprised this is not a across the board. This restaurant has won the best seafood restaurant in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro Brasil. Granted the food takes a while to come out. I think we have waited over an hour to get our food. However, the wait was totally worth it. This place won the best seafood restaurant in Rio

Yelp
1/2 star for ambience. This is a restaurant that once was considered among the best for seafood in Rio but which now is sadly lacking in its quality of food, its preparation, and its service. Our party of four was met first with unspecified wines offered by the glass- a bad sign. Then we ordered a 40 piece ceviche platter that was really quite good and raised my hopes. Our main courses completely fell apart however. My wife was supposed to receive grilled snapper dressed with a basil, oil, and tomato sauce. She got dry, un-sauced snapper. Our guest, on my recommendation ordered salt-crusted salmon only to receive - nothing. The staff had not taken his order and thought the ceviche had been his entrée. His date ordered the same fish as my wife but received a snapper in the salt crust, which no one had ordered. And I received my requested "fantasia" of grilled seafood which turned out to be dry, tasteless, and wholly uninspiring. In other words, the highlight of our entrées was that at least one out of the four got what he ordered, and three out four got something. The one who got nothing then had to wait a half hour to get a piece of grilled salmon, which was STILL not what he ordered. And to top it off, this piece of fish, like the others, was dry and tasteless. A shit show to be sure. You enter to a beautiful restaurant with multiple tanks housing assorted crustaceans, none of which I saw being fished out to cook. They all seem to be for show, and judging from my dinner, what is being prepared is frozen seafood. Either that or the cooks are worse at their craft than total novices pulled off the street, given an apron and toque, and told to grill seafood. Here's the deal- when we went, the dollar went a long way in Rio. Our dinner, such as it was, was cheap. Even so, if I had it to do over again, there is no way I would go. Having heard this is where we went, our family chastised us for not asking where to get good seafood. They said the place had fallen into hard times, corruption and even crime, which I of course cannot confirm but instead recommend you go do your research before wasting an evening ordering a dinner and being lucky if anything arrives. Later that night, my wife and the friend who had to wait for the wrong dish, both got violently sick. Was it Satyricon? Who knows, but given the complete mess they made of almost every single thing they did, I suspect it was. So just stay away from this place and search out any other option.

Yelp
The service was horrible, here my group experienced A LOT of racism from servers throwing things on the table to just being ignored and us having to ask to be served while we watched other tables around us get catered to. I'll never come back! The food was awesome which is why they get 2 stars although i understand this is culturely what they do here. It was still a tough experience.

Yelp
Amazing!!!!!! Service is top Tier, ambiance is wonderful and the food is outstanding!!! I would recommend this over and over again!! Lobster Thermidor is an Absolute MUST

Yelp
All the hype...and they didn't deliver. And some of the reviews are right...their service isn't as good as other places. I should have gone back to Alfaia for seafood than here. Everything we ate was mediocre at best...grill lobster, prawns, octopus salad (the serving size for octopus was really generous that I am octopussed out for this year and the next), shrimp with tomato stuff (?), bread and I mean just mediocre. Don't even see how Sting and Madonna would eat here. Maybe at one point when it was good but I just don't see it. And they were facially disappointed that we didn't want to order anything else anymore rather to ensure that we ate happy with what we ate. The price isn't too bad for us Americans but I wouldn't come back here or recommend anyone to come here if any of my friends are in Rio.

Yelp
Satiricon was recommended by the hotel in Rio for the quality of their fish & you will not be disappointed! The shared fish platter starters (intended for 2 but I was on business with the weekend solo in Rio - so I had for myself) was a delightful mix of 7 small fish dishes topped off with 4 oysters. Each was nicer than the last and together we're a real treat. The main course was kept small as I thought the starter may have been too big but again, the quality and freshness of the red snapper prepared in sea salt was fab., very good value & not too filling. No dessert but they did look divine so next time!! I used Uber to and from the hotel and for most of my weekend commutes and if you're experiencing Brazil for the first time you'll be pleasantly surprised by the low cost of Ubers - one recommendation however is to stick with 'Black'

Yelp
Went here for wife's birthday. Started with medley of sashimi. Delicious. Ordered 12 oysters got 6. Main course for me was codfish with potatoes and onions. Quite possibly the worst fish I have ever eaten. Overcooked. I sent it back and it came back worse. Hard to verbalize how bad it was. Wife had grouper which was so much better. Not sure I can recommend this place.

Yelp
We are so happy tried this restaurant! Some of the best service we have experienced anywhere, the waiter's timing was absolutely perfect. These people have been making beautiful/delicious food a long time and their experience definitely shows! As others have mentioned upon being seated you are presented with a variety of salads to take the edge off before even being presented with a menu. The various fish, bread, and roasted vegetables combinations were all so beautiful and savory. As a tourist, I really appreciated being presented with a variety of local dishes that I would not otherwise try and they were all so good. My wife and I followed this feast of local delicacies up by sharing the carpaccio and a caprese salad. Both were excellent! The mozzarella in the salad was among the best I've ever had, almost a cross of what at home we would call burrata and a more traditional mozzarella. So yummy! The carpaccio was so paper thin and tender, seasoned with care and skill. Just awesome! We followed this up with what I will call the mixed seafood grill. Seven different things from the sea, with everything cooked right! That just does not happen! Octopus, squid, shrimp, langostine, lobster plus 2 unknown to me fish, all so very, very good! You really can't go wrong here. The only caveat is that it is not for the cost conscious. That being said,I feel our meal was worth every real!

Yelp
This is a very expensive restaurant given the prices in Rio but the food did justify it, at least mostly. They start you off with a large number of small appetizers even if you don't ask for it. Be aware this is part of the cover charge which is unusual here and is a very steep $8 US per person. That would cover an entire meal at many other places. We got the grilled lobster which at $50 US was expensive but definitely worth it. It's a very meaty entire Caribbean spiny lobster. The tortellini were ok. Some of our friends got fish dishes which were very good as well. Decent sized portions.

Yelp
Amazing seafood. Modern decor. Great service. Decent wine list. Unassuming entrance, but nice layout inside.

Yelp
If you're in Rio and someone else is paying, bring your appetite here and prepare to be stuff with yummy food. I shared the amazing seafood platter with a coworker or two and it tasted like it was yanked from the sea earlier that day. Nice wine selection, too.

Yelp
One of the best dinner experienced you can have in Brazil! A top rated restaurant in a very nice neighborhood. The restaurant itself it's clean well organized and excellently staffed. As soon as you walk in the door you are taken into a journey through Italy and the Mediterranean. Attentive servers and managers tend to your every need, excellent service and the next thing you know the fisherman's soup I ordered is in front of me. Large chunks of lobster and seafood await my palat in a delicate and balance broth. Shortly after devouring my soup, my seafood pasta is delivered; a beautiful prawn is excitedly staring back at me. The pasta was cooked perfectly and seafood is so fresh!!! Finally I had the mango for dessert, amazing and won't disappoint along with the chocolate truffles and a cafe! This was paired with the Argentine Malbec; an amazing culinary experience.

Yelp
Excellent Italian seafood restaurant. Went here with a local family and we dined like kings. Cold seafood apps included fish carpaccio and oysters. The best dish was the grilled langoustines and seafood risotto and then papaya cream and cream Carmel (pudding). Great meal and nice wine list. Would recommend !

Yelp
Delicioso! Love all the food selections! I guarantee that you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
What a find! We came in from various cities for the Montreux Jazz Festival and had a wonderful meal at this lovely restaurant! I can't say enough good things about the service and quality of the food. We wanted seafood and it hit the mark! Definitely recommend for diners who want to have a conversation without fighting loud music or bad acoustics and take in a timeless setting.

Yelp
Wonderful experience for our first dinner in Rio. Excellent service and their willingness to modify some of their dishes. Lobster with sauce and sea bass were excellent. Surprised, since we heard this city not known for its seafood
google avatar

Danilo C.

Yelp
Best seafood restaurant in Rio. Definitely worth the price. Go for the Thermidor, it's simply amazing
google avatar

Janny S.

Yelp
If there we six stars, this would be one of my rare six out of six. Excellent service, amazing seafood, freshest of fresh, and an excellent selection of South American wines. We arrives at midday for lunch, and left at four pm. Such a great place to spend the afternoon. Not cheap, spend about R800 for three persons lunch with wine, definitely worth it though. Recommended for romantic dining, special occassions or that important business lunch.

Yelp
No clue how this place is highly rated by travel books and so highly regarded in Brazil for seafood! We walked in for lunch with a party of 8 and were able to get a table. The waiter did not give us menus to order despite our repeated requests until after the "free then we barge you" appetizers were served. My biggest mistake was not following suit with my mother in law and ordering spaghetti. The salad was atrocious. It seemed like they picked off two leaves from the head and threw it on a plate with some hearts of palm and tomatoes. No dressing or time spent on visual execution. The seafood platters we ordered were not appealing - much of the specials were the appetizers repeated. The sushi platter was also not terribly impressive - some enjoyed the raw lobster but the sushi was almost served warm. Service was poor - hard to get anyone to help or even get the bill and get ourselves out of there! One thing I will say to be fair is we did not order any cooked fish which it sounds like this chain has been known for.

Yelp
5 years ago when we first visited Rio, we we asked the concierge where can we find the best seafood restaurant, we were recommended highly to try this place. When we arrived, the server didn't even hand us a menu, we asked for the best dish of the house, he brought a huge tray of variety of fresh seafood on top of crushed ice. We came back several times last December and today, here we are, savoring their signature seafood dishes, it was awesome!!

Yelp
My experience here was very consistent with all 1 and 2 star reviews for Satyricon you'll find on TripAdvisor... The good: Great area, nice ambiance and decor. The bad: Similar to the 1 and 2 star reviews you'll find on TripAdvisor, this place is severely overpriced and one thing that needs to be made clear is that there is essentially a $31 Real cover charge per person for stepping in the restaurant. They will bring out an "appetizer" you did not request and charge it to the final bill per person - our table hardly ate any of it because it was tasteless. I had their oysters and a white fish, both overpriced and tasteless. My wife's pasta was good, yet expensive. Waiters were indifferent. The bottom line: There are just too many good restaurants in walking distance of Satyricon to settle for their prices and tastes.
google avatar

Salena L.

Yelp
For how much this place is heralded as a legend of upscale restaurants in Rio, I found it to be mediocre at best. First, the decor seems to date back to when the restaurant was first opened back in the 80s, and while it feels like a place where people may have once closed important deals, now it just looks like a restaurant past its prime trying to hold on to a nostalgic memory instead of properly updating its vibe. I ordered a sampler appetizer, which looked interesting but was very bland. The grilled fish I ordered for my entree was the same way, and while I'm rarely one to salt my food in an effort to preserve the chef's intentions, I certainly went above and beyond in adding whatever I could to the meals I ordered. Overall I would skip this one, especially since there are a plethora of stellar restaurants within a stone's throw.
google avatar

Vin F.

Yelp
After reading several reviews giving Satyricon high marks I made a reservation. Brazilians seem to prefer eating late, that is 8-9 PM so getting a 6pm table was easy. It's a 15 min walk from Ipanema hotels but be careful on the side streets late at night. This bills itself as an Italian seafood spot and reasonably succeeds. The fishbits, peppers eggplant and breads that they initially bring are more than you need rather than an appetizer. (NB: these are NOT complimentary!) Pastas and fresh Brazilian fish dishes were outstanding. They don't have wine by the glass so be forewarned you may have to spring for the bottle. Service outstanding. Pricey but worth it. Also, bring your own packets of decaf coffee, but you already know that....
google avatar

Wendei M.

Yelp
This was as wonderful as our first high end dinner experience in Brazil could be. The service was absolutely impeccable. Before we were seated the maitre'd walked us past the very fresh whole fish laid out on ice, the not yet shucked oysters and the tank full of live lobsters and crabs so that we could see for ourselves how fresh everything was. We shared a half dozen oysters which were delicious and fresh and shared a seafood platter of fried calimari and grilled prawns and lobster with clarified brown butter. We were in seafood heaven! We each had a glass of Pinot Noir from Brazil which was wonderful. Highly recommend this for a high end dinner in Ipanema - worth the money.
google avatar

Hanner O.

Yelp
This place is exceptional! A true gem. I would highly recommend to any Italian food or seafood lovers. The service is impeccable and very clean.

Holly K.

Yelp
Miramar hotel recommended we try this place for dinner. We are American and appreciated the menu items being described in both English and Portuguese. There were 2 of us and we each ordered a cocktail. We were brought a plate of bread, eggplant, peppers and olive oil with our drinks. We did not order the bread plate and assumed it was complimentary. We each ordered an entree, $45-$55 US dollars each. I had the grilled white fish and he ordered the mushroom risotto. Both were tasty. When we were given our bill we were charged $14 US dollars per person for the bread...which we didn't order, it wasn't a big deal however I mentioned it to the waiter and he shrugged his shoulders. Disappointing for a "classy" restaurant with higher end prices.. There was not a view of the water or spectacular food, I wouldn't recommend it.
google avatar

Yelp
Nummy italian food! Nothing like a big bowl of hot spaghetti! The pizza wasn't as great, though. The portions are huge, so get ready.
google avatar

Giselle C.

Yelp
We have been coming here for years, be it for a romantic dinner, be it for a biz dinner with guests from all over the world. Always perfect. Some dare to say the best sea food you can have. Just be sure you have no limit on your credit Card. If you are on a tight budget have a pizza.
