"The eye-catching signs and bright lights outside this longstanding shack beckon passersby in for a messy-yet-glorious Italian beef sandwich. It boasts finely-shaved meat, fantastic gravy, and crunchy giardiniera that’s made with celery and red pepper flakes." - Eater Staff, Ashok Selvam

"The menu at this suburban spot has remained relatively unchanged since it opened in 1953. That’s something owner Barry Reggi, who took over in 1985 alongside Frank Levato, takes a lot of pride in. Reggi has used the same powdered beef seasoning blend of oregano, salt, black pepper and garlic since the 1950s—he believes that’s why customers keep coming back." - ByXimena N. Beltran Quan Kiu

Scatchell's restaurant feels new and the inside nice and clean. Parking is plentiful, however next to the tracks. The service was great and efficient. The dining area is small, with a bit of counter space and a back video gaming area. Ordered a beef and Hot dog and fries. Scatchell's dipped beef was shaved thin and provides a good amount of meat in the sandwich. The bun held and was topped with Hot giardinera. Sandwich was tasty the dog was just as good. Chicago style with sport peppers, It wasn’t bad but wasn’t great. The fries were the saving grace with plenty of crunch and salt.

Google
Good Italian beef, good fries. It's a bit pricey, $17.43 all in for a beef, fries, and a small drink. The 75 cents fee for using a debit card shouldn't be there, this is part of the cost of doing business.

Sam Nasr

Google
Tried the Italian beef sandwich The meat was a little tasteless the bread not good the size on the small side overall it’s just okay not one of the best in Chicago

Brenda Villegas

Google
Not a fan anymore- I ordered two sausage and beef combo & they only gave me dry beef sandwiches after ordering them extra dipped. The cheese fries were ok- the slice of pizza was the only thing good to be honest…

Theisha Frazier

Google
This restaurant is an oldie but they're consistent. I always order the same thing when I go. A slice and cheese fries. Over the years, the prices have most definitely gone up, but the quality of the food has not changed. It's the same thing I was paying a few bucks less for a few years ago. I get it, inflation blah blah blah. And as you can see from the receipt, they now charge a non-cash fee, which is crazy. I spent over $10. Why do I have a fee? The fee is ridiculous. I ordered a pepperoni & sausage slice. They don't have just pepperoni slices of pizza. You have to get sausage or sausage & pepperoni. I also ordered a cheese fry with onion and jalapeños, my regular. They usually put the jalapeños on the fries, but this time they didn't. They put them on the side. No big deal. The price of the cheese fries is now a little high for my liking. For the amount they give you, it's not worth it. The food was ok. It always is. I know what to expect, and I don't expect any more or less. The fries themselves were not hot. The cheese sauce they put on made the fries appear hot, but it was really the cheese sauce that was hot. The fries on the bottom, that had no cheese sauce, were warm at best. The pizza is just ok and it HAS TO BE eaten hot. If you don't eat it hot, it turns into a hard cardboard tragedy.

Google
The service was quick, but unpleasant, almost rude. The beef was bland and the sausage was stewed too long so, even grilled, it was soggy to chew. The pizza was okay, but nothing special. They seem more concerned about their video poker machines. I asked for a cup of water and was told they had to charge for the cup. Had my own cup, but they wouldn't use it! I know that being in business isn't easy, but you don't have to be rude about it. It's a shame.

Google
Ok been a customer as far as I can remember always served a great beef with hot peppers. Last week after hanging out At Hawthorne Watching final 4 decided to grab a bit to eat. A large pizza a beef a large fries and a couple modeló's to end the night excellent pizza well worth the wait 30 min meanwhile enjoying a couple cold beers.

Google
The "chili" dog was nothing but just beans and bean juice/sauce. I could not taste any chili in this chili dog at all. Just kidney bean. This restaurant is usually good so i decided to go out my comfort zone and get something else, this was the result, revise the recipe please.

Yelp
I'm done eating here the beef sandwich got really small , I rather go to Portillo's down the block and pay a few dollars more for a way bigger beef sandwich than get ripped off with this really small beef and I ordered the cheese fries and they barely had any cheese on them So if you want to get ripped off this is the place for you

Yelp
I consider myself an Italian Beef connoisseur. There are some beef joints out there that i have yet to try. Embarrassing to say, Scarchells is one of them. I'm not exactly sure why it took so long to try this place out. What I do know, is that I wasn't missing out on much. We arrived about 30 minutes before they were closing. The guy taking our prefer was on his phone and didn't really greet us. It was like he wasn't going to get off his phone until we were ready to order. And I was waiting for him to get off his phone so I could order. Not really sure who won that battle. It was also dark in there. They were wanted to get the hell out of there. I ordered by usual, Italian Beef with hot peppers and dipped. The sandwich was on the pricier side, especially for the size of the sandwich. The beef was good, but the giardenera was not good. Way to much crunchy cucumbers with not spice. It came with red pepper flakes, which makes the overall sandwich look good, but the cucumbers were too crunchy. It ruined the sandwich for me. I already have my favorite Italian Beefs, so I'm not sure when I'll be returning to this place. If ever.

Yelp
Went here on a recommendation from a local co-worker. This is a remodeled restaurant and the furniture is new. Order at the counter and then grab a seat in the dinning area. I had the beef/sausage combo with cheese fries and a drink. The taste was good, but there are better Italian beefs in the city. The peppers were tasty and the beef good, but the sausage was large and caused my bread to fall apart. Skip the sausage, it didn't have much taste, and stick with the beef. My co-worker said the pizza is good and it is by the slice. You do have to get a key that is attached to a clipboard if you want to use the restroom, but they do have EV chargers available in front of the place.

Yelp
After pick up at Midway, my PIC and I stopped at Scatchell's. He's a Chicago Italian beef connoisseur, and YELP-ers guided us here... The giardiniera is different- mainly celery slices and spices- but tasty! The beef is pull-apart tender and well fermented... Bread is Chicago chewy, holding up even under being fully dipped. Fries were good, but great. Chili cheese dog was a sloppy mess of YUM!! Huge soda/tea drinks. The employees were kind and efficient. Owner changed channel from Fox News to basketball game when asked. Inside, the original counter has a walk-up, old-time feel, yet the interior of the restaurant is spacious, modern, and clean. Make this a stop if you're in the Midway area, or if you like beefs!

Aldo K.

Yelp
I will always give this beef a 5 star review. However, their service has always been sketchy. The people who seem to be the owners are always cool and friendly. Their help? Rude, on the phone while talking orders, getting it wrong then confrontational after they effed up the order. Unfortunately, they caught me on a crappy day where I needed great customer service and they failed to provide it. I have been coming here since 1990, this really hurt me, might not come back again, all over a coke. I can get beefs somewhere else where they will value my business.

I I.

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 20 years and for the first time a new worker has the nerve to tell me they "never" sold cheese slices. Unless it's some Mandela effect, that's straight bull****. Definitely the quality of food has significantly gone down. They remodeled and have an amazing and inviting look but the food is just overpriced trash. Good luck Scatchell's

Eduardo L.

Yelp
I stopped going there ever since they started charging for a "Service Prep Fee", this is nothing more than a money grab. Food is still good, but not worth getting ripped off, even though it is a small charge. So, they are charging me to prepare my food? What's next, charging me to cook it? These fees and tipping has gotten out of control. I am a business owner myself, simply raise prices and let the customer decide if it's worth the increase. Lot's of other good Beef places that do not charge this.

Tony L.

Yelp
Used to go there when I worked in Cicero. Good beef and sausage. They have been there a very long time.

Lushus L.

Yelp
My food was overpriced, not very tasteful!! My Italian ice was very good. I won't ever return!!

Kwality T.

Yelp
The food here is great. The Italian Beefs here are melt in your good and never disappoint. The service is fast no more than a five minute wait time and everything will be fresh. As far as the atmosphere it's very chill, and they also have a side with a Gaming Room. So if you wanted to come in a dine then test your luck check them out.

Phil P.

Yelp
Soooooo I haven't been here since they remodeled. I hate I went. So I have LOVED this spot for like EVER. This spot is the reason I love an italian beef. Place was hands down one of the better beef stands in the city. I guess when they updated their facilities, they left out training. Sooooooo, I'm listening to a person from Scatchells tell a customer where he needs to stand to pick up his food. Well, first being a westsider, i saw the new digs and got excited! Being a yelper, I wanted to take pics, so I go out to my car cuz i forgot my phone. Well, I take the first pic, I noticed the looks from the behind the counter...I'm like uh-oh.. So I go to the the aforementioned "pickup spot for food after you've ordered" managing the awkward looks while taking pics. I'm like geez whats the problem....... Then the worst service I've seen in a good while takes place. They call my order #. I respond I'm here, standing at the pick up area. The gentleman behind the counter replies well come here. Not in the manner of "your order is ready, come on down" Bob Barker voice, Price is Right impersonation......naw, the tone was more like " well, I'm definitely not coming over there, come get ya food"..... I haven't been this pissed off at the way I was handled as a customer in a long time. Begrudgingly, I won't be visiting this place ever again. I can't spend my hard earned money at a location that has A server this ignorant, this rude, this appalling.... Service still matters......to me anyway

Juan H.

Yelp
This place is old-school back in the old days original Italian beef I only go here for one reason to get their Italian beef and that's it one of the best beefs in the city

Tracey C.

Yelp
I recently visited here based on some reviews that they had great Italian Beef sandwiches, along with other items. I ordered a hot dog & fries , slice of sausage pizza and an Italian beef. Of course some of the items I would eat later. I paid $6.00 for hot dog & fries which now I felt was overpriced after I went to Joeys Red Hots and paid $3.25 on another occasion for the same meal. Nothing different. The slice was okay, nothing exceptional. And the Beef .... Well I was disappointed that they only offered nacho cheese. Which in my opinion I felt was gross so I chose a side of giardiniera peppers and they were different, kinda oily and spicy. So for a plain Italian beef I proabaly won't be back here , but it was worth a try

J P P.

Yelp
Old School Beef Joint in Cicero. Juicy Beef that soaks through the paper. It's Wet, Messy and 'Doubled Dipped' because that's what you do. The sandwich is a 'scrumptious' feed that gets better with every bite. Grab a ton of napkins; you'll need 'em to wipe the smile off your face.

Tony H.

Yelp
Overall a very good beef. Flavorful, tender, good bread. The portion was small and like everything else these days, a little expensive. Doesn't beat Johnnys in Elmwood Park. Cheese fries good. Be sure to ask for cheese on side.

Tyreek J.

Yelp
You win some you lose some but you live to eat another fuckin day buddy don't listen but tha pizza fire asl

Shanna R.

Yelp
They attitude is bad , they food is not that good any more ! But how can you eat the food with the attitude from the cashier to them giving you your food .

Roberto R.

Yelp
Best beef in Chicago! I've been going there for over 20 years. Never disappoints. Italian ice is good too.

Reah A.

Yelp
A Cicero staple for over 60 years, family owned Scatchells continues to serve up some of the best beef sandwiches, pizza, sausages and more! Voted Chicago's #7 beef out of 22 beef spots, Scatchells has also been featured in Chicago's best, the Sun Times, Wayne's World, and the Chicago Tribune. All that to say...you will not leave disappointed. I tried the Beef Sandwich with sweet peppers, and added some of the spicy peppers on top. AMAZING flavor...truly one of the best beef sandwiches I've ever had in Chicago. Added on an order of the cheese fries and it rounded out my delicious meal. The newly renovated Scatchells has six gambling machines, so be sure to check them out while you're grabbing some of their delicious, homemade food.

C M.

Yelp
Sooo good we are there twice doing our trip to Chicago! Authentic dipped and heavily dressed beef sandwich with peppers and onions! The pizza was nice and big slices but not deep dish, yet very good! Italian ice was good! Cheese fries were a great side to it all! A must visit in Chicago!

Lady D.

Yelp
My first time picking up an order for Door Dash. Went to the window for door dash orders but no one was available to assist. Went to the next window and the older female employee stated to go to the third window. So I go to the window I initially went to and another female employee yells out rudely with pointing gestures "THAT IS WINDOW 1, THAT IS WINDOW 2 AND THIS IS WINDOW 3" in a very mean & condescending way. I asked her what's up with the attitude and she blatantly said she didn't have an attitude at all. It doesn't cost a thing to treat people with decency & respect. I left there with the most negative experience. After reading all the bad reviews on here they should shut this place down. Give the jobs to people who actually want to work and who know how to act like decent human beings. Animals treat humans better than the employees here. I'll be praying for all of you and for the closing of this establishment.

Anthony G.

Yelp
BEST BEEF IN CHICAGO!!!! This place is by far my favorite! I have been going here since I was in high school and it's never changed. Ambiance....It's an old school beef stand with a lot of character. The staff is consistent and if you go there a lot they remember you which would make me rate the service as a 10/10. Beef isn't it either. Great pizza! Great hot dog. Their giardinara is very different but so good. It has a taste of its own. None can compare. I challenge someone not to love this place! It's the best!

Anastasia Y.

Yelp
Food not nowhere near good enough to be as rude as they are in here. Doing entirely too much over some greasy, low tier pizza. Y'all think y'all Beggars or something? Hell even Italian Fiesta and the like gives out complimentary cheese and pepper packets with their pizza. This place needs it. Bland pizza and nasty attitudes. I will NOT come back here again. The crust was so hard and burnt. The kids had to eat the cheese off the top because it was too hard to bite the crust. Disappointed experience that didn't match the price.

John M.

Yelp
The beef was very good. Nice rich flavor and excellent quality meat but I would have given 5 stars there was no hot peppers in the bag that was on my receipt. That was disappointing. I also got a slice that was very good. Easy parking with a lot of interesting people around at 10 am if you want to make some new friends.

Brad Y.

Yelp
Tried this place out with my fiancée since we live nearby. How this place apparently made #7 for best beef is beyond me. The giardiniera is usually by best part but theirs was awful. We got a couple of chili dogs and it was more like beans and cheese dog. I also got really sick after eating here.

Michael H.

Yelp
Beef Sandwich: $8.40 gets you a beef with peppers. Good beef & great gravy. Not the biggest sandwich and not the smallest, right in between.. bag didn't have much weight if you know what I mean! Hot Peppers didn't have much heat & heavy on the CELERY! Ordering Window: This is a disaster. You stand in line and then they take your order with the window halfway up? They can't hear you. Then they take your money and give you a number without saying anything about your change. Then you wait and when they call your number.....you walk BACK to the window next to the line and get your order and change. They don't explain anything and you end up standing next to a line of people to get your food. Asinine. The owner doesn't trust anyone so he is ringing up everything inside and doing it like this, they think? Wont be rushing back

Ayden W.

Yelp
I Love That Sausage Pizza It Was So Amazing The Service Was So Awesome The Ambiance Was so great

T. L.

Yelp
Unbelievable beef! I am a frequent Johnnie's fan and this is worth the trip. Absolutely delicious! Will be back soon!

Andrew W.

Yelp
It is not an exaggeration to say that there are literally hundreds of hot dog stands and burger shacks across the Chicagoland area. Some are good, some are just meh and some are so good that they've been around for a long time. One of those OG hot dog stands is Scatchell's. They recently updated their dining room and proved a good atmosphere to eat your food if you don't want to stand and eat your food at their counter across from the order and pick up windows. Most importantly, their food is very good. It's not super fancy, but they do all of the Chicago classic conform foods well. On a recent trip, I ordered a slice of their pepperoni and sausage pizza, Italian beef, Chicago style hot dog with fries and and a lemon flavored Italian ice. The Italian ice was sweet, tart and cool; perfect for the hot day I visited. My favorite from what I ordered was the Italian beef. I order it dipped. The dip was perfect, it wet the sandwich nicely, but it wasn't so much where it was falling a part. In sum, Scatchell's is a must visit among Chicagoland hot dog places.

Isis M.

Yelp
I was doing laundry and decided hmmm maybe I should try some food from this place because laundry makes me hungry. So i sent my husband and daughter for some chili cheese fries and Italian ice (ya know a nice lil snack!). They come back and I'm so excited to dig into these -my mouth is all watering and then to my avail their chili is just beans :( for 3$ damn. The disrespect. You could've added more cheese to make up for this madness. You all need a sign that says chili is fake just red kidney beans thrown together. And lower the price with that fake chili!

Araceli C.

Yelp
My bf took me here I order italian beef W/ hot pepper's And sm strawberry italian ice and for him med strawberry & lime Was pretty good the lady on the counter nice & friendly hope they open the dinning room soon And cash only

Pito S.

Yelp
This was my favorite place to go for beefs. Juicy big portion and flavor was on point it never skipped a beat. Visited this location. The upgrades to the facility are amazing totally different vibe. The downfall: The flavor gone, skimmed portion. Never had I ate food that after 15 minutes started getting the bubble guts. Never again will I step foot in this establishment.

Victoria J.

Yelp
Food was a complete disappointment! We got chicago style hotdogs, condiments were fresh is the only plus. I couldn't even taste the hot dog because it was so small. I mean tiny! Cashier had no communication skills and when asking questions about the menu, he either shook his head yes or no. We also got two Italian Ices, one strawberry and one lemon. It was just sweet frozen ice no real lemon slivers like it used to be and the strawberry had no flavor at all. Don't waste your time!

Carlton J.

Yelp
Polish not as good as Jimmy's. Wasn't as fulfilling but wasn't nasty. That was a Cicero polish not a Chicago polish I may say

Tonie T.

Yelp
Pizza was not to temp, horribly cut and stuck to the box!!!! Italian ice was ok but definitely wouldn't recommend.

Ernesto D.

Yelp
Not sure why this place has bad customer service. The owner charging and giving you food looks like he hates working there, never looks happy or greets you or says thanks. The other guy that wears the green bay uniform on Sundays is always complaining about something with the other employees and also never greets or says thanks never smiles looks like he's being punished to work there! Why are they always trying to charge extra for using a card and even when you pay cash they try charging you if you don't pay attention. When it gets busy they serve you uncooked fries! There like no quality check I guess! I mean cmon step it up! Only reason I gave it 2 instead of 1 star is because I be liked this place since I was a kid!

Jay R.

Yelp
Been going since a child and it's great the service is great the inside is always clean and the food is very fresh 10 out of 10 recommendation.

Maronda H.

Yelp
Scatchell's is not only famous for their amazing Italian Beefs and Hot Dogs. But their Italian Icee is so delicious and full of flavor. It's cash only but they have a debit machine inside just in case you didn't bring the green paper. The prices are reasonable and the food is pretty good. The parking space is limited so be prepared for a mini crowd. No need to worry the line moves fast. Please don't come thru the door talking on your cell. There is a sign that clearly states No talking on your cell when placing an order.

Chevy C.

Yelp
While being a customer at this establishment-- my experience was fuqt literally the staff were rude axx fuq, disrespectful, act they are mad at the world to their customers. Also while getting our food, the waitress (lady) threw the food (pizza) at us after we paid our bill, and didn't care about who was watching her do this, this place also comes off racist to different ethnic groups especially if you're of colored (blacks, etc) I would recommend no one to this establishment even if it's the last place on earth.

Aug J.

Yelp
Best beef combo and cheese fries. Friendly staff, you can eat inside at standup counter. Enough said.

LaDonna H.

Yelp
Rude customer service. Susan was very rude. I was afraid that she spit in my food. The other guy had to tell her serval times to stop being rude

Rosa J.

Yelp
Oh no, I have a terrible news! Rosa J. may be running out of places to "yelp" about one of her favorites: Italian beef sandwiches. Wait a minute! She found another candidate on her Yelp bookmarks: Scatchell's near the corner of Cermak and Cicero, in a close proximity to CTA Cicero/Cermak Pink Line station. I went with my usual routine: an Italian beef sandwich with hot peppers. I took care Daddy J.'s order by feeding him a double-sausage sandwich with hot peppers as well. By the way, money stored in a plastic card isn't going to work out at Scatchell's. When cashing your check from work, take out some cash so that you won't starve! To be honest, I wasn't overly crazy about the tenderness of the beef. I thought it could use more au jus. I requested for my beef to be dipped, but it felt dry for some reason. The four (4) stars were given to their celery-based hot peppers. Daddy J. and I actually enjoyed the texture and crunch. They weren't that spicy, but they were still bold on flavors. The price for these were affordable: $13.40, including tax. Nevertheless, it wasn't worth the trek to the Village of Cicero for Scatchell's unless you're in town for running errands and conducting some other legit businesses.

Donna S.

Yelp
If it's not broke don't fix it. This has really changed not just the "gaming " crap. When you pull up on the west side all the signs in the windows are about "winning the big one". Not signs about the food. Oh well, everybody is subcoming to this gambling, gaming stuff these days. Ok to the food. The remodel gives the place a clean up and I don't remember being able to get beer here in the past. So that is good. The beef with hot peppers. Blah. Lacking flavor, the hot peppers are now way heavy on the celery and it is not mariated nearly enough just tastes like watery celery with a little cayenne. What gives? The beef was just ok, smaller than I remember, very bland and parts very stringy and chewy. I got the homemade lemon Italian ice. Not the same, Maybe homemade, but using a cheaper mix? I don't know. Made me sad. Longing for the old days.

Lakesha C.

Yelp
I used to really love Scatchells's. But it is terrible lately. The sandwiches are the size of small tacos. I just can't with them anymore. My coworkers and I jusT stopped going. I hope that casino helps with business. Cause they are going to lose a few

Edward R.

Yelp
Hmmm, well to start this is a go to late nite spot for me (one of many. I'm a fat kid what can I say) and it's pretty close to me. Tonight I grabbed a Italian Beef, chili cheese fries and a soda. The Italian Beef was nice and fresh and well seasoned. But let's face it of course I can get a better Italian Beef. But the chili cheese fries that's different!! These fries are covered in a good chili!!! Yes the chili on the fries is fye!!! Along with the cheese and I get chopped onions and tomatoes. I'm telling u it's a monster! The fries are pretty good plan with just salt and ketchup too. But the fat boy way is to die 4. If you're in the area stop in. The service is also pretty good! #AwsomeSauce!

John F.

Yelp
Good place to eat but watch your belongings. It's always a gamble going to this place as far as safety goes.

Corey F.

Yelp
So I came here in between Church services to grab a quick bite. Wasn't expecting horrible service and crappy food. The food was over priced for the quality and they had the audacity to charge extra for parmesan and pepper to help mitigate the palatability of the below average food. It is no wonder the place was empty of a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I was partially lured here by a review Food Network review from Jeff Mauro who said, "One of the Best Beefs in Chicago." That quote was a total false advertisement. I ordered a 16 inch Cheese and sausage pizza with French fries, a combination and an Italian Beef. The pizza was on a special for 9.99 since a single slice is almost 4$. The Italian beef was almost $6 and the combination was 7$. Everything was bland and the service was slow. They didn't even have plates to eat. My total was 34.18 plus 50 cent for a few packets of cheese and crushed red pepper. In closing, there are better pizza and Italian Beefs to be had in our great city at a better value. I should have went to Taco Bell across the street. Update as of 6-3-18 at 7:26 pm. My Wife isn't feeling well and the food that we got from "Scatchells" is all that she ate today. She also stated the Beef was flavorless and that the crust on the pizza was hard and the toppings were very scarce. The pizza was mostly just flavorless bread and sauce. By the way they don't have Gardinera peppers all they have is some horrible house-made concoction made with celery and crushed red peppers. Please stay away from this restaurant. Try at your own risk!

J J.

Yelp
First the good. Fries were perfect. They are the large size, with just the right amount of salt. Crunchy with softness inside. The Italian beef had a great roll. Good texture. Bad. The hot peppers were just celery with red pepper flakes. No peppers. The beef was bland. No flavor. Could barely taste beef. No garlic flavor, no oregano, and more water than juice. Service was great. Employees were nice and helpful. A few seats at the window, but most get it to go. Most orders are combos, cheese fries and pizza. No one seems to get a beef.

TheRealMrsBanks ..

Yelp
So last week I paid $8 for a beef this week it's $10 when I asked why I was told the prices went up on Friday #PRICE GOUGING

Rosetta M W.

Yelp
Driving from Mishawaka to Chicago and having just completed an Italian Beef Challenge with my mom , (based on my favorite TV Network, The Travel Channel); we visited Al's Beef and Mr Beef to decide ourselves. It was an awesome excursion , driving around and tasting the two iconic Chicago eats I posted my reviews on both restaurants onYelp, but could not sign off without saying, of the two that we visited , SCATCHELL'S has my vote, all my cash, and nomination for Best BEEF SANDWICH I've ever tasted so far. Hands down. Just had to say that! Enjoy! Eat Beef & Grab a Pizza too they are delish as well!
