The Flatiron Lunch Guide

"Is Shake Shack better? Yes. But chances are you don’t have 90 minutes for lunch. Schnipper’s, right around the corner, is a pretty good alternative." - hillary reinsberg

"Goop HQ will enthusiastically vouch for the fact that Schnippers (the original outpost is conveniently located on the first floor of the New York Times building) has the best chicken fingers in the city. While kids go wild for their fries and milkshakes, it’s a pretty great indulgence if you’re working late and need a convenient sugar bomb. They also have locations in Flatiron, Uptown, and in the Financial District."

This place has a nice environment and consistently good service. I really like their sloppy joe and chicken fingers. Sometimes I’ll come here just for a root beer float. It’s a big space with a lot of seating, so it can handle the crowds, and it feels spacious during off-peak hours. They even have outdoor seating in the warmer months.

Stopped in for a quick lunch. If you want the best BLT in the city, this is the place you need to be. They should name it the Bacon, Bacon, Bacon Lettuce, and Tomato. First time for a good friend of mine and she said it was the best she ever had, and that about sums it up.

Went to this restaurant with a group of like 18 people, this place was truthfully so expensive almost $20 per person, the burger was honestly dry as hell and the fries had literally no flavor. The portions were okay i guess, the Mac and Joe (seen next to the ketchup bottle) was literally $12 for that… The employee handling our food was very nice to i added a star for him but literally over all this food wasn’t great and its way too overpriced for a mediocre meal. The sign was also a lie, food did NOT comfort me, it was more like a dry slap in my face.

Google
The tunamelt on chibatta bread was delicious. frech fries were crunchy and fresh. The crispy chicken sandwich and chicken strips were good too, nothing special about them. Serving sizes were big; one order can be shared by two people, just order an extra drink. Went here before closing, and we got our food within 10 minutes.

Google
Food is just ok. The best being their beef. Otherwise regulase burgers slightly over priced. I had a decent meal but I wouldn’t go back. I wanted to try something truly “New Yorker” but it kinda disappointed. Huge place basically empty at 16:30 whilst there was a HUGE queue to enter in other restaurants in the neighbourhood. If you go you’ll be ok and satisfied. Perhaps it is the right option when everything else is closed.

Google
The fried chicken is excellent. So is the honey mustard sauce, which really has an intense taste. The GF burger bun could have been a bit softer and better toasted, the manufacturer of this bun is not the best. Service was fast and friendly

Google
First time trying this place, it was pretty expensive for what it was in our opinion.. the chicken tenders were kind of hard, not very satisfying crunch by any means, the cheese fries were pretty basic I was surprised the cheese sauce was a lot like Taco Bell’s .. my sister really enjoyed the chili bbq chicken, said it hit the spot, but personally the chicken felt dried out to me. This measly meal pictured was over 60 bucks! The onion rings were pretty good, I think we enjoyed those the most!I wouldn’t really come here again especially given the prices.. I feel like McDonald’s is way better

Abdullah

Google
Relaxed restaurant with good friend chicken, salads and burgers. I’ve been here a few times for last minute comfort food, and every time I ordered fried chicken it came warm/freshly fried.

Yelp
Schnippers has a great location for the transients exploring nyc. The place is pretty busy; however, despite this, it seems pretty well run. The burger was well cooked and the fries were ok. The onion rings were pretty oily, but seasoned well. If you need some reprieve from the city and can find a seat definitely swing by. Just be wary if you come with a large crowd, it may be hard to accommodate you.

Yelp
We were directed to this restaurant by an app that suggests allegedly gluten-free/ Celiac-friendly restaurants. Two members of our 10-person group have very serious Celiac disease and cannot eat gluten or even have any contact with it. Cross-contamination can be just as problematic for them, so we were very careful to select a restaurant that claims to be gluten-free, or at least have gluten-free options. 2 other members of our group are vegetarian. They also advertised having vegetarian options. So, between the 2 concerns, we thought and hoped this would be a good option for our group. We were sorely mistaken. First, the food was WAY overpriced, even for New York City. Each persons meal cost about $25 per person for a (lousy) cafeteria-style meal. Second, almost all our orders were wrong. The first set of our group to order never got their food at all until we complained after everyone else got theirs. It wasn't even cooked until something was said. Then, everyone else's meal had food missing or mistakes (eg bacon cheeseburger with no bacon), missing orders of fries, none of the ordered toppings on another sandwich, etc. Third, the food was terrible. It had no flavor, the quality was poor and the portions were mediocre. The chicken sandwich was so bad it was inedible. The only saving grace were the fries. Both the regular and sweet potato fries were good. They claim they're gluten-free and cooked separately, but I absolutely would not trust that. See below. Finally, and most importantly, there seemed to be no understanding by the staff about medical concerns with cross-contamination of the food, despite advertising itself as having gluten-free items. Even after being questioned before ordering and assured the food was kept and cooked separately, it was accidentally (and fortunately for our group members) observed not to be the case. They caught it in time to not eat the food and risk a potentially serious medical incident. Despite all the errors and issues, no discounts or refunds were offered. So basically, it was a $300+ meal that was indelible or unenjoyable for the entire 10-person group. Several left hungry or had to buy more food elsewhere. We cannot recommend strongly enough not to waste your time, money or health eating there.

Yelp
The staff were friendly and service was immediate. Basic dining area nothing spectacular but large in size. Clean restrooms. I only ordered chicken (for my dog) but she definitely enjoyed her special dinner. The chicken smells delicious ( not a meat- eater). Definitely over priced but it's NY!

Yelp
I had a wonderful lunch and I definitely recommend this place. I came for lunch and had the burger special combo 3. My burger was perfectly made and cooked exactly how I specified. The toppings of the burger were all great components, the bacon was well cooked and the arugula was fresh and gave a tart flavor. The cheese was rich which helped to balance the arugula. The fries were fresh which I loved. I definitely recommend this combo it has fries and a drink for $22.00. I think this is a steal and you can taste the freshness of the food. The employees are very friendly; the cashier who took my order was very nice and engaging. I choose to dine in and someone brought my food to me, it was a wonderful experience. I am glad, I came to give this place another try.

Yelp
Stopped here to get a bite. The greeting was nice, The food came out quick and was tasty. With it being Thanksgiving Day and crowds everywhere, I was still able to find a table with no problem. The sitting area was spacious and not congested. I recommend trying it out when in NY!

Yelp
What's not to love about Schnipper's! This quick to go spot across from Port Authority always comes in clutch for me. Especially, when I want something quick, no frills, and I know it's going to be delish. Get the Sloppy Joe and a side of Mac and cheese! Trust me! I wouldn't normally send someone to the heart of Manhattan and recommend this as a meal, but Schnippers has been serving these amazing, comfort classics and I've been eating them for over a decade so I think they are doing something right. This visit I was still full from brunch but I knew I needed something before seeing Moulin Rouge so a hotdog it was. Grilled to perfection. Thanks Schnipper's for holding your girl over. P.S. The shakes are pretty legit and they usually have seasonal flavors!

Yelp
I was craving onion rings and this place popped up on Google Maps so I decided to give it a shot since I never heard of it before. It's very spacious and clean inside. There's several tables for group seatings and counter seating if you are dining solo. After you order, they provide you with a pager so you know when your order is ready. However, the pager never went off and they actually brought out my order to me directly. I'm not sure if it was because it was off hours so a pager wasn't needed, but it was a pleasant surprise for them to bring the order out to me! I got the old fashioned burger and onion rings with a side of honey mustard. The old fashioned burger would be equivalent to what you get at In and Out or 7th Street, which a simple cheeseburger + caramelized onions and pink sauce. I enjoyed the burger! I do wish the onions were caramelized a little more - it was a little too stringy for my liking and made it difficult to eat with the burger. The onion rings were the star of the meal though - they are nicely battered and not too greasy! The onion rings are huge and a side is enough to share with 2 people (or just save them for yourself if you are super hungry!) They have a perfectly crispy exterior with a soft interior - I'm still thinking about these onion rings.. The honey mustard paired with it nicely - they have other dipping sauces available if honey mustard isn't your thing. The only downside is the prices are pretty steep for a burger + onion rings. I paid around $21 for my meal, so it's definitely not a spot I would go back to if I just wanted a simple burger. However, it's worth a visit at least once if you're in the area.

Yelp
My friend and I were looking for a spot to pick up a quick dinner and Schnipper's was perfect for that, since it's right across the street from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. We came Sunday around 8:30 pm and it wasn't too crowded. I was surprised by how big the restaurant is given its prime location and proximity to Times Square. They offer salads and hot dogs, but the majority of their menu is focused on burgers and sandwiches. They also have chicken tenders and mac and cheese along with various sides. We shared the Veggie Boy, which is their vegan sandwich, for $12.50. The price is a bit high for the portion that you get, but given the location, it's not too surprising. We got it to go since we were running late for our bus. It took maybe 10 minutes for the burger to be ready, but that worked out as it gave us time to use the bathroom. We ate the burger on the bus and boy was it the best veggie burger I've had in ages! I don't know what exactly they put into their veggie patty but it was very flavorful. My friend loved it as well. I'll definitely remember this spot for my next New York trip!

Yelp
Shake shack step back! Schnippers is the WINNER! I love the quality of the burger, the ingredients (onions, tomatoes, pickles, onions lettuce) are REAL. I can TASTE the vegetables! The pattie is a commendable size. I enjoy the french fries immensely! The fries are steak cut and I enjoy knowing I am eating sliced potatoes. I will always stop here and enjoy a delicious meal that is nutritious and satisfying. I feel fulfilled after eating here. Thank you Schnippers! Please stay the course, I value you!

Yelp
Stopped in here late at night for a quick bite while out exploring. Welcoming staff and interior is kept pretty clean. They have a pretty big menu so many options depending what you're hungry for. I got a Mediterranean salad which was alright. As it was later at night some of the greens were a bit wilted, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt due to that. Decent spot for a meal. Thanks

Yelp
UPDATE: Went back a week later before a show had a great salad with plenty of fresh ingredients. My friend had a buffalo chicken sandwich which she enjoyed. The experience was also better with the food brought to our table. Update to 4 stars If you are stuck in the middle of Times Square with not much time before an appointment or show nearby you could do worse than Schnipper's.. you can also do better, but there are some things going for it. Located on the corner of 41st and 8th you have a delightful view of the Port Authority Bus Terminal which on most days could be a show in its own right. There is plenty of seating here and turnover seems fairly quick so you can take a breather in your tourist-centric travels. The menu is fast food, but the ingredients seem a step above. Fresh Arugula on my Schnipper's Classic... I don't mind if I do. The burger, cheese, onions and bacon all do their job, but unfortunately didn't taste much of Schnipper sauce which was a bit disappointing. The bun holding it together reminded me of White Castle's bigger brother, but less steamed. I got this as a combo and the Fries were great and it was nice to have free refills on the drink. There are lots of ways to get in trouble here - sloppy joes, hot dogs, chicken sammies and even a tuna melt are some of the food choices.. milkshakes and beer are options if you prefer liquid trouble haha. If you are looking to eat healthier they offer apps like Baby Arugula (a small salad?), charred broccoli, fresh corn esquites (healthy-ish?) and kale/cabbage slaw. They also have a varied number of bowls and salads and I would venture to say the ingredients are probably pretty fresh judging by the burger.. perhaps this is the way to go next time I am here looking for a quick meal that involves a seat in Midtown.

Yelp
Convenient location with 2 entrances. Didn't have trouble grabbing a seat on a Thursday night, but it does get crowded. There's ketchup and mustard on every table. They have a bathroom with a code on your receipt to get in. Quick and helpful service. The cashier offered paper menus in case you have a hard time looking at the menu on the wall. Took less than 10 mins for the food to be ready. The Cremini Mushroom Burger (added grilled onions) was tasty. Cooked perfectly medium, and well seasoned (didn't taste much truffle from the truffle mayo though). The bun was soft, but holds everything together. Good portion size, but definitely recommend getting the house fries to go with. The House Fries were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Delicious on their own without condiments. It is a bit pricey, but it's also in Times Square, so it's worth a try! Would be back to try something else if I'm in the area.

Yelp
Convenient and casual place for burgers, milkshakes and other elevated fast food. Despite having to order at the counter, the service was polite and quick, and I was surprised that servers brought my food to me when my buzzer rang: pretty fancy "table service" for a fast food joint! The food can be hit or miss: my burger today was underseasoned but otherwise tasty, but I've had burgers that are so delicious and juicy that they would handily beat out Shake Shack, no question. I guess it depends on the location?

Yelp
I use to work near the schnippers on Lexington. Never had an issue. Burger was fresh and fries and onion rings were so tasty. I had time to kill before the premiere of Those Of Us About To Die. I should have gone to 7th Street Burger. My burger wasn't cooked to order and it was covered in onions instead of the pickles I requested. Not shocked my order was wrong the girl who was suppose to take my order was on a FaceTime call. The onion rings were hard and not flavorful at all. 1/10 the bottled beer was good

Yelp
We've been here a few times and always satisfied so 5 stars now. On our most recent visit, I wanted to eat light so decided to share a sandwich and fries with my husband. Grilled chicken with brie sounded good and it was. Also with arugula, raw onions and tomato in ciabatta bread.
google avatar

Yelp
The Cobb salad is a 10+ It's always fresh and delicious A good Cobb salad is an art form and they serve it up perfectly. Add some crispy onion rings also. A 10+ The lemonade rocks, the house. I have been coming here since it opened. I live in the neighborhood and I've never had a bad experience here across Service cleanliness freshness, and delicious food at a decent price point. You can't go wrong with this. It's also got a big patio that they leave open all year around and just let people sit there and catch a breath . It's right on eighth Avenue so people watching is a nice bonus. The dining room is all glass and the space always feels open and good vibes. Everything about this place is worth the money and worth the time. See you there.

Yelp
I am a very symptomatic celiac and was able to greatly enjoy chicken fingers and fries! They were delicious! I am looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
Ate here today for lunch with my sister to try this place out for the first time. We had ate and shared each other such as the fries, burgers and drink. I had got the bacon cheese burger combo and my sister only got the crispy chicken burger. All had tasted really good and delicious. The service there was also attentive and friendly. I couldn't agree more! Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time! :)

Yelp
Great place to have a descent healthy feed that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Service was great. Plenty of seating both inside and outside.

Yelp
I came to NYC for a 3 day trip, and this was the best meal I had the whole trip. I'm vegan, and the menu seemed to be pretty vegan friendly with a few modifications. I had the mediterranean salad without the feta cheese with an added impossible burger, and everything was absolutely delicious. I especially enjoyed the roasted broccoli. Highly recommend!

Joanne S.

Yelp
No words to describe how absolutely amazing Schnippers is!!! Thoughtful combinations with the freshest ingredients!!! OUT OF THIS WORLD onion rings, spectacular salads, hearty shakes, killer burgers and kind service. Schnippers is a must for all!!! Ordering for our office of 25 picky eaters! Elvia is beyond amazing and we are so grateful for all of her efforts. Thank you for keeping us full and satisfied. Joanne S.

Yelp
Quick and fast food service in the heart of time square! They have burgers, milk shakes, fries and salads! So much variety which makes it hard to choose from! I got the loaded fries with bacon and cheese, the chicken salad , the double patty cheese burger and the Oreo milkshake! Everything was made to order, very tasty , fresh , and hot! Just the way I like it! :) IG @nyc_food1e

Ben A.

Yelp
Food was average. Chicken tenders were not good, fries solid, signature sauce was underwhelming. Still good for a quick bite. Service good and restaurant was clean.

Edward K.

Yelp
Bad food, stale bread, dry burgers, understaffed. Waste of time and money. Very overpriced as well
google avatar

Tim O.

Yelp
Though a bit touristy, it's a tasty lunch spot. $10 burger is a real, juicy, medium rare burger. Great! The chicken parm special, however, was just bread on breading with a tiny sliver of chicken. Glad I got both but not going to bother with the chicken again.
google avatar

Eli S.

Yelp
I thought I was going to get a decent burger, and ended up eating a FANTASTIC one! I opted for the limited time mushroom burger and my friends got a regular and a bacon cheeseburger. The black and white milkshake met my platonic ideal of what a milkshake should be. Prices were all standard, and to my surprise, although it's a counter order place, they do bring the burgers to your table. The space is super casual and I look forward to going again with friends for a quick, satisfying bite.
google avatar

MaryKate A.

Yelp
Very tasty food! We went here before a concert and it was the perfect amount of food for a good price. I got the cheese fries and the grilled chicken sandwich. Both hit the spot. Where they lost a star for me was with the cleanliness of the seating area. It was pretty dirty and it was hard to find a table without spills/dirty napkins on them. The service was good. The buzzer system is always efficient! This place is a port authority staple at this point and I'll be back when I'm in the area.

Yelp
3.5 rounded down FOOD - decent but too much sauce grilled chicken and brie - I really liked this but make sure to get less sauce bc the second time I went my friend got it and it was so bad w sm sauce. but sauce aside, I like the fact that it's light and fresh and how the brie melts onto the sandwich. schnippers crispy chicken - nothing really stood out in this one but no complaints (besides too much sauce) PRICE - a little pricey for a sandwich but for a meal it's alright SERVICE - the staff look like they hate their job which I don't blame them for but despite that they still are v good at their job and not a hindrance :p AMBIANCE - order at the front and then sit down vibe, huge sunlit space though
google avatar

Jose C.

Yelp
Close time square, really decent chicken. Very juicy, not so much the fries, the sauce was a chipotle ranch which was delicious. Would come here for a late night visit.
google avatar

Marianne W.

Yelp
Schnippers is great. I love their turkey burger and the sweet potato fries go with everything I get at Schnippers. The fried fish is delicious but I don't think they have it on the menu anymore. You gotta try the chicken fingers too. My daughter and I both enjoy a meal together. I can order my food the way I want. Customer service and cleanliness hasn't been an issue. I go early to avoid crowds. I just wish they would open a location on the Upper East Side!
google avatar

Shawn M.

Yelp
Best old fashion comfort food Really enjoyed the milkshake! Don't visit NY without taking a pit stop at Schnipper's
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Low key obsessed with these chicken fingers, especially when dipped in hot sauce. The crispy exterior doesn't get much better than this. The fries were good but don't hold up to the chicken, basically stadium French fries. Also good with hot sauce. All in all, such a solid option for a quick bite.
google avatar

Crystal P.

Yelp
They had me at the sign in the window advertising Sloppy Joe Mac and Cheese! It was great, the esquites was just okay, but I would definitely go back!
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
We got here close to closing time (I hate doing that but our tour went over the time) and even though we got a reminder of this the person taking our order was still nice. The food was freshly cooked and pretty good. My hubs had the chicken sandwich and I had the burger and I would recommend. We didn't go all out bc of timing but if I were in the area I would come again especially since this place was down the street from our hotel.

Yelp
Ordered lunch from here as it had been years sonce ive had it. I ordered my meal online as i dont have a lot of time to wait for the meal to be ready. I arrived about 5 minutes early to make sure i was there when it was ready. Sometime went by and i asked about my meal, was told that it wasn't ready yet. Not a problem i waited a few more minutes but still nothing. I realized tthey messed up my order bu giving it to someone else by accident. I ended up waiting around 20-25 mins for my order. A little disappointed on this. Now onto the meal itself, the burger was really delicious and juicy. The my seasoned it and it came out great. I asked it to be a medium and it was. The lettuce and tomato were crisp and fresh too. The fries were crispy and airy. I would return just for the fries alone.
google avatar

Robert C. Y.

Yelp
Just two things: 1) The best BLT in 20 years. 2) Onion rings like you can't find anymore. Pricey, but if you cheap out you'll end up with those vile chopped onions in batter things. The onion rings were cut 3/4 inches thick. And the bacon was thick cut and cooked perfectly. Going to try other stuff from here for sure. Oh, 20 % off your first order and $3 off subsequent $30+ orders.

Brianna H.

Yelp
THE BEST THING ON THIS MENU IS THE BEET AND GOAT CHEESE SALAD. I don't even like salad, I rarely get it but I literally will seek out this salad. It's incredible. Best thing on the menu (honorable mentions being the Mac n Cheese and the Purple Cow Milkshake thing) great business. Food came relatively fast and it's easy and a little more elevated than Panera or another order at the counter place. Also so close to Times Square - makes it super convenient and easy.
google avatar

Carridad R.

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed Schnippers' Not So Impossible Burger - its rich flavor and texture made it a satisfying choice. The accompanying fries were equally impressive, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The ambiance felt welcoming, resembling a lively public space. The service was fast and efficient, contributing to an overall positive dining experience.
google avatar

Sigs G.

Yelp
The food here was decent but very overpriced. I guess thats what you get for being near Times Square. I had chicken sandwich and fries. The chicken sandwich was delicious but the fries were subpar. The staff were nice though and the restaurant is big. I'd only recommend eating here if you are nearby and with a large group.

Channing W.

Yelp
The burgers were great!. Fast service. Very clean location. Milkshakes were great! Just be prepared to pay a little more than usual for a meal for two at a smash burger spot than you would down south.
google avatar

Diondra B.

Yelp
Was craving a burger so stopped here. Was excited to see they had fresh ground meat for their turkey burger vs the typical place with a unknown turkey patty. I got the turkey burger and fries. It's a bit on the pricier end but it's times Square so kinda expect it. The food was good. The cashier that served me was helpful and friendly too

Yelp
Dinner time. Touring with high school students. We wanted a place that had some salad maybe some comfort food. My daughter and I split a South by Southwest Salad. It had mixed greens, grilled sweet corn, grape tomatoes, green and red bell peppers, cotija cheese, pickled jalapeños, chile dusted tortilla strips, scallions, chipotle ranch dressing. We added on some crispy chicken for protein. This was plenty for two people. The ingredients were fresh and the dressing flavorful. Our dinner companion had the Super Creamy Mac and Cheese. It was piping hot and delicious from her comments. The restaurant has a modern vibe with brand art and neon. Floor to ceiling windows bring in light. There is inside and outside seating. Hope to get back to try their sandwiches.

Yelp
Not quite an ew, but I am definitely not coming back. The food is overpriced, I got a very okay burger that is way too small. Also, the arugula and meat do not marry up well at all. It creates an incredibly bitter and unpleasant taste. I had to remove most of it just to make it taste somewhat pleasant. The milkshake I got is good, they use original ice cream and hand spin them. However, if you are to be a burger shop, the burger should be the star, not the milkshake. The service is also very poor here too. Nobody seems to know what they are doing, and it is a free for all when it comes to getting your food. It felt completely disorganized considering the restaurant is in such a touristy part of the city. Speaking of touristy, there are better tourist trap restaurants in the area to visit than this one. I think most would agree on that.
google avatar

Stephen L.

Yelp
I almost never update my reviews, but the owner was super nice after my last review, so I decided to give Schnipper's another shot, and it was indeed a better experience. I got the famous Mac and Joe this time. The combo of Mac and cheese with the sloppy Joe meat was great! Finally, I found a place that understands how cheesy Mac and cheese should be. I don't think the ingredients were particularly high quality or fancy like at a more upscale restaurant, but for the price ($11.50), this was pretty good. I also got the sweet potato fries- solid quality. In addition, I got the cookies and cream milkshake, which was very tasty. My main complaint again is the service speed, which is quite slow, especially considering the type of food being ordered. But at least the staff are pretty friendly and there is a nice large seating area to wait in. Overall, I'd say that Schnipper's is deserving of 4 stars. Given its convenient location in Midtown right next to Port Authority, I will almost definitely be returning again.

Yelp
Great place for good fresh food when in a hurry. I was rushing to a meeting as I always am when in the City and this place caught my eye as I pass by. Bright, open, airy with tall floor to ceiling windows give it an inviting fun place feel. Had the tuna melt, onion rings and a Cookies and Cream Milk Shake. All were delicious. Loved that I could watch them make all three. Great feeling of freshness. Prices are reasonable and the staff is very friendly and fun. Alone or with your family this place is great. I will definitely be back to try some of the other unique menu items.

Yelp
Schnippers is a pretty large busy establishment in the theater district serving standard American food. Very disappointed with the burger because it was flavorless and dry. However, the chicken tenders were so crispy and juicy!

Yelp
Classic cheeseburger with no frills. Hit the spot during a late night however there are plenty of better burgers in the city.

Yelp
Burgers here were great! Good place for a decent burger if you're in need of something quick. They were juicy and made fresh. The bun kind of sucked cause it was cold and super thick top bun. Classic burger had way more flavor than the double. So go for that. The milkshake was BOMB. We always struggle finding a good milkshake cause they can be soooo sweet at times. This one was perfect. We chugged two of them so fast. Def recommend that.
