Where To Eat In Carroll Gardens

"Court Street Grocers gets all the hype, but have you heard of Sea & Soil? It’s a bit more low-key, but if you’re passionate about sandwiches, you should pay them a visit. Behind the hot pink door, you’ll find a counter staffed by people ready to have a detailed discussion about what you should order. We were very happy with their recommendation of The Lucy, with salty smoked trout and sweet pepper jam, but maybe you’re a better candidate for The Isaac (roast tofu) or The Isabelle (braised pork). Everything at this worker-owned bakery is made in-house, and the sandwiches are sold on a sliding scale ranging from $9-$16. " - neha talreja, bryan kim, willa moore, carina finn koeppicus

Sea & Soil Review - Carroll Gardens - New York - The Infatuation

"If you’ve spent your life feeling like nobody understands your deep and unrelenting passion for sandwiches, you haven’t been to Sea & Soil yet. Behind the hot pink door, you’ll find retro black-and-white tiled floors, and a counter staffed by people ready to have a detailed discussion about what you should order. The last time we were here they suggested The Lucy, with salty smoked trout and sweet pepper jam, but maybe you’re a better candidate for The Isaac (roast tofu) or The Isabelle (braised pork). Everything at this worker-owned bakery is made in-house, and the sandwiches are sold on a sliding scale ranging from $9-$16. There’s a big table in the window, but Cobble Hill Park is nearby—and real sandwich lovers know the power of a park sandwich. " - Willa Moore

As a local realtor of this wonderful community, I can confidently say that Sea & Soil is a gem in our neighborhood. This charming sandwich shop, run by dedicated owners who pour their heart and soul into every dish, offers a dining experience that is truly exceptional. When someone puts such care into their food, you can absolutely taste the difference. Every sandwich on the menu is unique and bursting with an array of flavors. Whether you're a meat lover or a vegan, there's something delightful waiting for you. While the vegan options are impressive, I couldn't resist the house smoked Brisket and the Lulu (check menu). Both were outstanding and left me eager to return for more. Trying their coffee is next on my list, and I can't wait to see how it complements their already impressive offerings. One unique aspect of Sea & Soil is their sliding scale pricing system. Initially, I found it a bit confusing, but once I understood the concept, I realized what a brilliant idea it is. If you have more to give, you can support the shop and your community by paying a bit extra. If you're going through a tough time financially, you can still enjoy fresh, delicious food without breaking the bank. This system reflects the community spirit that makes our area so special. I highly recommend stopping by and experiencing it for yourself. Whether you're a local or just passing through, this is one spot you won't want to miss.

I wish I could give this place 6 stars. Heard about it from my favorite podcast, so when I finally made it to NYC, I made the journey to this little place in a quiet Brooklyn neighborhood and couldn't have been more impressed. Best sandwich I've eaten in years--halloumi w/ hummus, roasted squash, and pickled onion on their amazing foccacia. Wish I could go back today. I also ate one of the best pastries I've ever had, a chocolate croissant with a *pretzel* finish. Wow! Just wow. Please just go there.

Google
What a treasure. This spot is worker owned and it’s such a cute little spot!! I had the MOST amazing sandwich (the Laith) and the flavors were so unique and wonderful. Will be coming back and supporting this awesome coop.

Google
Very very best vegan sandwiches in New York! And just truly the loveliest folks in town <3

Google
Honestly the best food I've ever had!! It's also the cutest shop and has the sweetest owners. Fresh baked bread for all the sandwiches, everything homemade. Also delicious coffee and sodas. Will make your day in many ways! A hidden gem of the neighborhood.

Run don’t walk!!!!! The most delicious food made by the sweetest people with A+ values in an extremely cute environment! Why would you eat anywhere else…??? The flavors coming out of this kitchen do not miss!! Valuable community-building hub, too. Brooklyn is so lucky <3

Feta and chili crisp pretzel roll was incredibly delicious. Great sandwich menu items that are vegan- and vegetarian-friendly! Love that this spot is worker-owned and sliding scale.

What an incredible little group of misfits. Coming from a bakery that is just the most adorable. I am going to get the quinoa and chickpea with carrot, pistachio, cucumber, feta, and mint.

Yelp
How can you not love this place? It's staffed by a colorful cast of characters who aren't just working hard to turn out delicious sandwiches, but are also the owners of the establishment. A sliding scale of payment ($12-$18) instituted so as many people as possible can afford those delicious sandwiches, while still compensating those worker/owners properly. There's a cute little communal table where you can bump elbows with what appear to be card-carrying members of the counterculture, deciding whether or not you want to stare at your phone or commiserate angrily about the current state of the world in between bites of your delicious sandwiches. Did I mention the delicious sandwiches? They have a number of combinations I was excited to try, but all were thrown out the window because I came in on a Friday, which, if you didn't know, is one of the only three (Friday/Saturday/Sunday) days of the week that you can get The River. I'm already a sucker for exclusivity, but throw in some miso marinated pork butt, tomato jam, and wasabi aioli, and there was never a chance I wasn't headed down The River. I also ordered it MELTYYY!!! (their spelling on the menu, not mine) because some do like it hot. This is a damn good sandwich. Thoughtfully conceived, well-executed, and most importantly, on INCREDIBLE naturally leavened focaccia that is airy, and crisp, and fluffy all at the same time. This bread will make any sandwich great, so I'm gonna be back for The Wren and The Lucy at a minimum. If I had any notes, it would be to throw more pork butt on there. I like things meaty and melty. I also got a damn good cookie as well, which turned a perfect lunch into an excessive one. But I regret nothing.

Yelp
Back in the day I was the proud manager of a Democratic Socialism page on MySpace, so of course I appreciated Sea & Soil's dynamic pricing system, which allows you to pay along a sliding spectrum for their sandwiches based on your own volition. There are plentiful vegetarian sandwiches on offer - I ordered a variety with zaatar-spiced tofu and asparagus on focaccia. It also had a heavy layer of mayonnaise and overall was a fairly satisfying sandwich, although I didn't love the asparagus. The pretzel chocolate croissant was pretty good but didn't seem especially pretzel-like to me. Sometimes you just can't beat a classic pain au chocolat from La Bicyclette.

Yelp
Not your typical sandwich. The shop is adorable & like Brancaccios food made on premises. It's a sliding scale for sandwiches their main focus here. I went with the Lucy, smoked trout, fermented jam, greens & a small serving of ginger sesame slaw plus a small pretzel roll. Total: $20.49 but I only paid $10 for the sandwich. This place rocks on a lot of culinary levels. Location on the other side of Hicks is a trek from the F but soooo worth it.

Yelp
The people in here were extremely nice! We didn't know which type of bread to pick and they surprised us. We got the Elliot and the river and each bite felt fulfilled of freshness. The spot it's super cute but small so we didn't get to grab a table but there it's a park at the next corner where you can easily enjoy these. We love the idea of their sliding scale pricing structure which basically you pay what you want based on their scale that normally goes from $9-$16 We decided to pay 10 for one and 15 for the other one We loved in here :)

Yelp
Love this place! They have amazing sandwiches and bakery items. They bake their own bread and the scallion pancake croissant is my favorite. They recently started doing donuts on Sunday but get there early because they usually sell out before noon. They also sell sandwiches on a pricing scale to make it more affordable to people in different income ranges. Tip- you can early to have them hold any pastry item because they usually sell out early

Yelp
Wonderful place! Delicious sandwiches and the croissants are in par with the ones around the corner at the French bakers. The place is entirely run by two lovely people. (Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.) It's on President st; cross street is Columbia. Go support them before they get too popular and you have to wait in line

Yelp
An absolutely incredible place, both in terms of their worker co-op mission as well as their delectable sandwiches and baked goods. It's too bad I only get to contribute one review, because I can't wax enough about how these are my favorite sandwiches I've had in all of NYC, and I say this with my chest. The focaccia used for each sandwich is something I haven't seen too many sandwich shops do, but highest props to the baker here; the bread nails the perfect amount of crunch and salt that makes every bite a mouth party. Couple perfect bread with the really creative ingredient medleys available for vegans and meat lovers alike, and you have me sold as a dedicated repeat customer. My favorites thus far are The Lucy (flawlessly tender smoked trout with pepper jam) and The Iz (curried lentils w/ tamarind sauce that pack a powerful spiced punch), yet I still have much more of the menu that I need to get to. A bit of a trek to get to past the BQE but well worth the trip. I'm ecstatic that this former farmer's market pop-up shop has now gone brick and mortar with much expanded hours, and I can't wait to see what other culinary delights are in the pipeline!

Yelp
We had the Wren and the Hugo. Each of them a great medley of flavors. The bread is terrific. It's art. Or, I mean, if you want to think of it as just a sandwich? sure, you will not be disappointed. Bring as much attention to it as you want. They're good people. I wish I could eat lunch here every day.

Yelp
Amazing selection of baked goods and sandwiches!! All are delicious, a very welcome addition to our neighborhood. Staff is incredibly friendly and cool, they are also a worker owned co-op with a great mission statement. Their sliding scale pricing for sandwiches is a really cool way to offer variety for people of all income types. Couldn't recommend enough, run don't walk!!!

Yelp
What a delightful addition to our neighborhood. The sandwiches are tasty and well curated. Lots of vegetarian/vegan options. The bread is amazing. Good people making good food.

Levi C.

Yelp
Everything about this place is unbelievable. The sandwiches are delicious and take risks that pay off, the cooks/workers/owners are incredibly sweet, the local products they sell are well chosen - freshly made pasta, jam, and coffee -, and the benchmarks of leftist thinking are all here and executed well - sliding pricing, promoting local businesses, being worker-owned, communication, etc. Splendid!

Yelp
I haven't tried the food yet but I noticed their sign today and ventured over to explore. My pup and I were immediately greeted by someone super nice who offered a homemade dog treat! The energy felt great and the patrons there were all smiles. There were seats inside and out. Will def be coming back to this new neighborhood spot.

Yelp
Sea & Soil makes delicious and unique sandwiches. Their breakfast sandwich is one of my favorites in the city. All the ingredients are fresh and reflect what is in season.

Yelp
This place is incredible. A must try in the neighborhood - whether you live nearby or not. This is hands down the best sandwich I've had. They recommended I try the Fiona and I think I ate it in 5 min because I couldn't put it down. Now I have to go back and try the rest. As someone who eats plant based this place is a gem - although there's something there for anyone who loves sandwiches and creative flavors.

Yelp
The perfect little neighborhood spot. Very friendly staff, fresh and delicious sandwiches, and just a gem in every aspect. No complaints. Our new favorite place.

Yelp
Amazing food and great ethics from this worker run spot. The sandwiches are all excellent, love the Wren, all the ingredients perfectly compliment each other and the bread is divine. Same goes for the pastries. Would be a regular if I lived in the neighborhood.

Yelp
This place is AWESOME! Everyone that works there is super friendly and helpful. I haven't had a sandwich yet, but I had the pizza, and yea it was AWESOME! For desert I had the biggest slice of the most delicious cake ever. It is so nice to have a new place in the neighborhood. Don't walk, run to this restaurant.

Jay L.

Yelp
Oh man. Everything I have had from here is excellent! They take great care to make sure their customers are happy, and their food is just incredible!!
