This Houston Program to Help Feed Hospitality Workers Is Expanding to Galveston | Eater Houston

"Pledged earlier this month to serve 10,000 meals a week to furloughed and unemployed hospitality workers in Houston and is expanding the effort by adding a meal distribution site in Galveston. I report that it's partnering with the Galveston Restaurant Association for its "Dinner's On Us" program and plans to distribute 1,200 meals in Galveston prepared by Hess' Food Services team, with volunteers handing out the food at a drive-through. This Galveston expansion complements the downtown Houston distribution, where 10,000 meals will still be available weekly for affected hospitality workers." - Adele Chapin

A Houston Nonprofit Pledges to Make 10,000 Meals a Week for Hospitality Workers | Eater Houston

"A Houston food-rescue nonprofit has launched a “Dinner’s On Us” program to provide 10,000 meals a week to furloughed and unemployed hospitality workers, partnering with corporate supporters to distribute contact-free, drive-through meals every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; offerings include chicken and biscuits, red beans and rice, and penne pasta with sausage, with each meal sized to serve seven to eight people. Recipients must show a recent paystub listing their restaurant, hotel, caterer, banquet, sports venue, or convention center employer, and distribution will continue while funding allows; volunteers and financial donors are directed to the organization’s website." - Adele Chapin

Restaurants Donate Perishable Food to Food Banks Amid COVID-19 Pandemic | Eater

"A food-rescue organization that experienced surging pickup requests from large sources such as convention centers and stadiums, handling roughly double its normal volume and setting a new one-day record by collecting 13,000 pounds of fresh food for redistribution to over 90 local charity sites; due to food-safety rules it is uniquely able in the city to collect prepared foods and expects demand to grow as dine-in services close." - Brenna Houck

This does seem to be one of the best organizations for getting surplus food to those that need it. On the day that I volunteered a lot of food was delivered to the local Star of Hope building, one of my favorite charities who provide shelter and sustenance to those abandoned by society. The driver I helped was very friendly and helpful, and all Second Servings delivery vans are spotlessly clean and in tip top mechanical condition.

We are a logistics company and had a truck deliver a few miles from Second Serving's office location. We called the office thinking we could deliver some overage turkey products there, and Max informed us they don't directly store products but he could probably help me find a place. Max proceeded to line up a donation within minutes to a nearby food bank. These people are clearly all about helping which is rare to find these days. God Bless

When you volunteer at Second Servings of Houston, you get to work with other folks who are great at sharing with their time to help our neighbors who face food insecurity. The double benefit is that Second Servings of Houston rescues food that would otherwise go to the landfill. It is a real pleasure to be a part of a big-hearted group of individuals who care.

What an honor it was volunteering with Second Servings as second seat today. We rescued almost 3,000 lbs. of food that would have otherwise been thrown in the garbage. Thank you Andi & John at Second Servings for making us feel so welcomed & needed!

It is always a pleasure volunteering with Second Servings. The entire staff is inviting and truly fighting for the cause of eliminating food waste. Volunteering has allowed me to see all areas in Houston as well as knowing where food donations are being served. I highly recommend coming to volunteer to see for yourself!

I volunteered for Second Servings last week. Every aspect of the scheduling and preparation was very organized. The Organization is transferring unused food to charities that feed the underprivileged. After Hurricane Harvey, this need is even greater. An outstanding leadership team.
