The 13 Best Underrated Bakeries in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Seed Bakery’s Joseph Abrakjian is a busy baker: he mills his flour, ferments his dough for 24 hours, and rotates flavors weekly. Lining the shelves are loaves of olive, spelt, or oat maple, along with daily specials like a chile relleno empanada." - Mona Holmes

Google
Was early for an event at the Rose Bowl and found this a short distance away. Super high quality baked goods made on site and served by the owner herself! Was impressed with the apple pastry and fresh baguette. The baguette held up well for hours and was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The apple taste was not too sweet and the pastry buttery and flaky. No dining area, pickup only (for now). bought a bag of their granola too, haven't tried it yet but price was $10 and the bag was heavy, which bodes well for the value.

Google
The best bakery on earth. The bread is fantastic and the pastries are life changing. They always have new, unique and seasonal pastries, many which use local produce. They also have the best croissant in America. The raspberry or berry croissants are great too. It’s hard to choose which pastry to get because there are so many great ones. Get there early—they will sell out of some things by 10 AM on the weekend.

Google
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Their sourdough is next-level good. Crunchy crust, soft and tangy inside—exactly how I like it. Everything is organic, made with care, and the pastries are also amazing. I love stopping by in the morning for a little treat and good coffee.

Google
A lovely on-the-go spot! The Cauliflower sandwich is my favorite, and their baked goods are delicious. I recommend stopping by, and picking up food to take to the park down the street. There is no seating area or indoor dining.

Google
quiet community pastries shop they have so many options:) but the pastries are just okay from my side

Google
A delicious hidden gem in Pasadena. I got the quiche and it was worth it! Huge and stuffed full of veggies and flavor. I’d recommend heating it up while your there if you plan to eat soon.

Google
I wish I could give this place six stars!! Food is amazing. We literally forgot to take some photos of the pastries because they were eaten too quickly! I see some comments about staff; our experience with the staff was amazing. They were helpful, kind, and patience. They engaged in genuine, heart felt conversations, and were sweet overall. They had great COVID safety protocol. The amazing baked goods could be seen through the window on the street front. Outside distanced line to a safe order window. We grabbed a plum pastry, strawberry pastry, almond croissant, pistachio muffin, and a couple others…it was about $35. There is a parking lot behind the location. It can be a tough to spot the entrance on the street; it is at the north east corner of the building.

Google
A small bakery I found via Instagram. Everything was labeled clearly, and I loved the almond‑filled morning bun. They use almond flour, not rice, so the texture isn’t grainy. The owner makes small batches so things often sell out by noon. Great for someone avoiding bad bakery

Yelp
2 words: Lemon Bars. Best in Pasadena, it doesn't crumble on your hands, the creamy lemonish top plus the buttery crust melt in your mouth. I totally recommend it. Very friendly atmospher , Pam is great ! Easy parking.

Yelp
A supplier of ours dropped off a box of their stuff as a gift. Our office is a bit heavy on the "foodie" side and everyone was pretty happily surprised at the creativity and quality of their stuff. Everyone loved theirs, but I can only speak to mine, which was a muffin that I believe had some cherries and/or cranberries in it, the carmelization of the crust was great/perfect, the quality ingredients and bake on it were great, but what I love the most is they did NOT overload it with tons of sugar. It can be hard to find a bakery leans heavy on quality and skill instead of just trying to knock you out with sugar and fat, so we're glad to find this one. We all emailed the vendor saying "where the hell did you get all that from", I'm a fan.

Yelp
Horrible horrible experience. I placed a phone order for 2 egg burritos. I wasn't happy with my order so I called. The way the manager brushed off my complaint and talked to me left me baffled. I've been in the customer business for over 10 years. I've dealt with unhappy customers before and unfortunately when you're in the restaurant business the customer is always right. I was upset that I paid $35 for 2 egg burritos and it came with 2 halfway full salsas and red salsa when it usually comes with green. Had I been told that there was red salsa today or even if the manager had told me that unfortunately they change the salsas daily I would've been fine. But the fact that he told me "oh well that's life" To think that the manager can talk to a customer in a disrespectful tone says a lot. So much so, that I decided to go back to the establishment and request a refund. I was so upset with the way that he spoke to me that I literally took the burrito out of my boyfriend's hands and decided to not support his business and request my money back. Had he given me my refund. I wouldn't be writing this review right now. When a customer goes back to your business and tells you that they're not happy with their purchase and brings you back your product, You give them their money back and everyone goes about their day. But due to the fact that my boyfriend took 2 bites out of the burrito while I was on the phone with the manager, the manager decided that he would only give me a refund for 1 burrito. I wanted a full refund. I wasn't happy with supporting someone's business who talks to customers so degrading and I just wanted my money back. He decided that because I decided to record the situation, in the end he refused to give me any refund. I left the burritos there and went home. At this point this feels like theft. I am beyond upset at this point. Had he simply apologized for the inconvenience when I called to explain to them why I was upset, all of this would've been avoided. He shows no sympathy and no care for his customers. To think that he thought it was okay to refuse me a refund while I returned the product is basically theft. I'm beyond baffled. This is all so ridiculous. I decided to record the altercation for my safety and because I told him I was recording he decided I wouldn't get a refund at all. I left the burritos with him and left. At this point, this is theft.

Yelp
Wonderful, authentic sourdough bread. The times I have purchase a loaf the bread is soft from the inside and crispy on the outside. The olive sourdough has whole, olives and works great alone or for a sandwich. The batard is also a wonderful alone or with a sandwich.

Yelp
I came here this past weekend and the goods did not disappoint! Street parking is plentiful and it seems like there's always a wait? But it seems to move pretty quickly. This place has been on my list and always drove past it on a busy evening, but grateful to have tried it! The spread: -veggie quiche: honestly quite the best thing of what was available that day, but VERY dairy heavy, and quite massive -Gouache: amazing, like a cheezy popover? -salmon sandwich w/o the aioli: X dry at all. We thought maybe we would need a spread, but they dont allow replacements -drinks are not on the menu, but they seem to have coffee when they don't run out. We ordered the jamaica lemonade (made from scratch - very tart&sweet) and iced tea. Not sure if they'd be willing to do an arnold palmer of the two, but I kept mixing the drinks. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Parking is available. Woohoo! No seating available. You order at the window and get your food at the door a few feet away. Very cool I think. I ordered the cauliflower sandwich. OMG. IT WAS DELICIOUS. I'm not a cauliflower fan but this sandwich converted me. It's huge. But that didn't stop me from devouring it. I also tried the empanadas. They were okay. I will come back for the sandwich.

Yelp
This is a window order service where you can view the available pastries through the window along the side of the building. We ordered six different pastries. I found the apple cider doughnut pastry a little disappointing and lacking in the apple cider tangy flavor, but otherwise everything else was good. There is a decently sized parking lot behind the bakery.

Yelp
My husband and I have loved Seed ever since we first tried it this year. Their pastries are delicious, and if you are looking for specific ones, I suggest you arrive earlier on the weekends (probably 9:30 or earlier, or go on a weekday) to have your pick from all their offerings for the day that you can view through the windows. After making your choices, you can order from the worker at the corner window. Every time I have gone, the workers have all been very nice. ***Do note that they don't take cash, so pay by card or tap to pay! They also sell bread loaves, rolls, and prepared food like burritos and sandwiches (there is a menu next to the ordering window and you can see the bread loaves on a shelf from there as well), but I haven't tried them yet. I love the savory croissants, and my husband likes the empanadas and pies. The pastries are delicious as is but taste even better if you bring them home and toast them. It's not the cheapest place to get baked goods from, but I believe they are worth the quality and taste. They have two tables with umbrellas set up around the corner next to the ordering window if you want to stand around to enjoy your order, but it would be nicer if there was seating like a bench or something. I understand why they might not offer seating/indoor dining anymore since the surrounding area is not the safest, so Seed is more of a take and go place. We will definitely be back to try more things in the future!

Yelp
Love the bread! When I want to be a carb monster I definitely come to this bakery and get the bread. Their pastries were meh.

Joe K.

Yelp
This is a Pasadena secret. The food is fresh and delicious here and everything is made on-site, not frozen, not from a factory. It's such a steal considering they mill their own grains for the bread and the sourdough is done in the ancient way using natural yeast which is much healthier. My wife had the gravlax sandwich that she said was the most perfect sandwich she's ever had. I'm addicted to the breakfast croissant. And to the Yelper who sarcastically asked that "aren't all eggs cage free" - No, at many other restaurants the eggs are from factory-farm chickens who can barely turn around in their cages and are living in filthy conditions OR are powdered eggs. You are getting cheaper meals with lesser quality eggs. Hello Denny's. Seed does everything fresh. We're lucky the prices aren't double what they're asking for.

Yelp
Came in around 1:30pm. Pastries were pretty good, but the cashier was super rude when I asked a couple of questions. Definitely need to work on their customer service if they don't want to lose customers.

Yelp
This is such a great bakery run by amazing people. I ordered the pop tart and Chile relleno empanada for my first visit. I absolutely loved the empanada. The chile was diced but still in good sized chunks and spread throughout the empanada for flavor in each bite. It was cheesy and the pastry was flaky and buttery. The pop tart was great as well but slightly too dry, maybe it was over baked a tad? the pastry was a bit too crumbly but still flaky and great flavor. The filling was tart and thick, not too sweet, and the light icing on top offered a sweet contrast to the sourness.

Yelp
Pam needs to work on her attitude or have someone else work the front. I love supporting local businesses here in Altadena/Pasadena. I love the food but I dislike the negative energy. Customer service is everything.
google avatar

Yelp
This visit was one of those instances when I feel slightly swayed by a place's general popularity. Seed Bakery only has a walk-up window so there was a small line but service was quick and we were able to get our order in a reasonable time. I recently watched the latest episode of Great British Bake-off and was thrilled to see a Paris-Brest, (choux pastry with crème mousseline, topped with almonds) recently feat. as a challenge on the show, as one of Seed's offerings. It was amazing, but I think the crème mousseline was a bit soft and probably could've been a better experience if a fork had been provided, but instead was a huge mess to eat. I also ordered a plain latte, but I'm not sure I'd come back specifically for the coffee. There was a large array of pastries, savories, and individual bread loafs to purchase, and I look forward to trying other items.

Yelp
They're currently operating as a takeout-only operation and NOT accepting any cash payments. There's free parking in a small parking lot in the back. There was a small queue early in the morning, but it moved quickly. Making a selection was very difficult because all the options were available and everything looked SO good! I went with the strawberry pistachio croissant and was very pleased. The pastry itself was flaky and delicious, and the strawberry flavor went really well with the light pistachio paste inside. The layers softened after several hours because of the fresh berries inside, but it still tasted great. This place is popular for a reason! I can't wait to try their breads the next time I visit.

Yelp
Oh my GOSH! When my husband and I moved to Pasadena, this was probably the most recommended place! We finally checked it out and we never go anywhere else when it comes to baked goods!!!! Everything, and I mean everything there, is so delicious! The way they formulate, bake and create these goods are superb! The location is on a corner of Washington and a suburb street, and it's a blue painted building, you can't miss it! You can't really go inside since it's just a corner stand, but you can take a sneak peek inside of all their breads and goods! Service is so great - everyone is so nice and helpful! Their sandwiches are also divine! We usually get the cauliflower sandwich, salmon/lox sandwich, and eggplant sandwich! Do not sleep on their crossaints, especially the strawberry pistachio!!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
They do certain things really well here. For example, the Danish and gazpacho. The peach danish... OMG, but really any of them. SO GOOD. I am not a fan of their savory handpies, but honestly, I just think you have to try their different goods to know what you like. I usually get their breakfast quiche, but recently tried their breakfast burrito, and it was pretty good! I wouldn't recommend their coffee. Their jamaica (hibiscus) drink is really sweet, so I water it down.. but then that means i have twice as much to drink lol. I was annoyed once when they overcharged me and my friend, but I was too tired to even bother going back and disputing it. This is a regular spot of mine when I don't feel like going further down to Millie's.

Yelp
I've been living in Pasadena the past four years and I'm hitting my head on the wall for never trying this place before, I visited 1 weeks ago for the first time and came back twice already, I want to try their whole menu eventually, every item I try so far has been exceptional, I close my eyes while I chew; the bread is excellent and all the ingredients are high quality and fresh you can taste. Please note this is not a restaurant, just as listed here is a bakery with food items they sell to go, keep that in mind. They have a big selection of sweet and savory pastries, cakes and loafs of different rustic breads baked daily, don't miss out is so delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Oh gosh where to begin! So many wonderful things about Seed! The service is very quick, very friendly, and informative. I pass by Seed every morning on my way to work. It's hard to miss with its royal blue brick. Finally I had a chance today to stop by and it did not disappoint. Upon arrival at the door, there's a small table where you can order and interact with someone. It was clear that many patrons are regulars here. I overheard a patron sharing that she was trying to have more whole grains. She got some detailed recommendations and she seemed very pleased. I chose the pain suisse croissant with cheese and mushroom. Not only did it have wonderful layers and a lovely flakey crunch on the outside, it WASN'T GREASY! How they achieved this is pure magic. The flavor was lovely--simple so that all of the ingredients were pure and shined through. My only wish was the option to sit and eat somewhere so I could savor each bite. I gobbled that croissant in the small but convenient parking lot out back by my car... And then I went back to look at all of the goodies and menu again lol! Planning for my next trip, you know? And definitely Yelp review worthy. Everything looks absolutely beautiful and delicious. I am really excited for the next bite.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
This place is an absolute gem!! I have not had one bad thing here. Baked every single day and very fresh with quality ingredients.
google avatar

Derek D.

Yelp
I had the tarragon chicken sandwich and it was delicious. Loaded with tender Flavorful chicken with hints of tarragon. I look forward to trying their other sandwiches. I recommend Seed.

Jessup K.

Yelp
This place charges people for a cup of water, $.50 - even if you've made a purchase with them. They also don't offer reusable cup (like a water station, which would be the solution) - pretty gross price gouging
google avatar

Yelp
Short rib burrito changed my life. Absolutely amazing They're have so many beautiful selections of baked goodness. I'm coming here as much as I can.
google avatar

Yelp
Fabulous bake bread and Pastries muffins, croissant. Nice lunch menu. Staff is friendly and helpful with choosing items from the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
Sadly it's a ghost of what was... it's no longer the "go to" place for brunch throughout the week. NOR is it pleasant, appealing, attractive nor comforting. They only take credit card, another sad loss, while you stand on the sidewalk! The dirty and impersonal sidewalk is where you conduct your business? If you like spending your credit (not cash) on Premium priced breads, from a dirty sidewalk, then this is for you!
google avatar

Joe R.

Yelp
The flavors are unique and explosive in everything they have! The customer service was amazing loved the vibe !
google avatar

Yelp
When they are open it's my favorite spot! I love the baked goods! I highly recommend you make a point to visit this spot

Yelp
Conflicted about writing this review. Having come to Seeds for many years and loved their pastries. I think it is time for them to reopen their full store. When you pay around five dollars for a pastry, I think it is not too much to ask to be offered a chair and a table as before the pandemic. We supported them during Covid by standing in line rain, or shine, however now it seems an unreasonable ask for customer to accommodate what I have to assume is their unwillingness to spend extra time, effort, and money on reopening their store. The last time I went, standing in the rain, no less, I asked when we can expect a full service establishment again I was given a vague, almost angry flipped non-answer. Until that day, I will spend five dollars for a croissant elsewhere I guess.

Craig S.

Yelp
The bread is delicious. I first had their bread at the South Pasadena Farmers Market, but over the last few years I buy at the bakery. I have had many different loaves, and I have really liked every one. (Perhaps the only negative is that the loaves don't last long once I start eating them.) And the prices are very good for such special bread.
google avatar

Brandi F.

Yelp
They no longer have ambiance, this is now a to go window and I just don't understand why they threw their entire cute cafe concept away. If you want bread or something to go, it's fine but if you want brunch or any kind of service or ambience, probably better to go elsewhere.
google avatar

Sudheshna M.

Yelp
Stopped by this coffee shop and was pretty disappointed. There are no tables or seating--just a window for ordering, which made the long line even more confusing. Turns out, the wait wasn't worth it. The coffee tasted like something you'd get at a gas station, and funny enough, I saw a few people drinking coffee from other places while sitting nearby... should've taken that as a sign. The pastries were the only saving grace--good variety and tasted nice, but overpriced. Service was fine, nothing special. Wouldn't go out of my way to come back.
google avatar

Guido K.

Yelp
This is NOT a restaurant, so there is no Ambiance. After having read the rave in Eater Los Angeles and some of the reviews here I grabbed my wife this morning in the hope of a great breakfast. This place may have great bakery products, but they sell only takeaway in the most uncharming way through a window on a busy street, and this with a "meh" attitude, which my wife and I found so uncharming that we did not even buy any product to take home and test. Again, I did not try any of their food, but the experience - it was a 20-minute drive for us just to go, was less than acceptable.
google avatar

Aaron G.

Yelp
Dude... ham & cheese melt. Excellent crunch on the outside, stuffed with lots of ham and perfectly toasted cheese.
google avatar

Daniela B.

Yelp
This local community supported establishment continues to not only provide delightful treats but ensures that each interaction is based upon respect and kindess. As a non morning creature their black coffee consistently soothes my grumpy ways as each sip of their beans manages to never leave a burnt taste upon my tongue.
google avatar

Craig C.

Yelp
Love having a local independently owned bakery nearby. There's always a line. Check it out, but get there early.
google avatar

Sylvia L.

Yelp
I only tried the pastries and it's very good. We're from San Gabriel and was worth the drive and the traffic.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Best bakery in Pasadena. If you have the opportunity to taste the kumquat croissant or the matcha croissant, you should...but it will ruin everything that follows. Be warned.

Peter F.

Yelp
Freshly baked bread with pure ingredients Also has great pastries and sandwiches. Please stay open during this perilous time!

Yelp
Love this spot just went there this morning on a crazy windy day. The brisket burrito just hit different this morning I love it bread is ridiculously bomb and the customer service is super welcoming. THANK YOU

Mary Ann N.

Yelp
A friend recently recommended this place & I still can't get over the fact that I haven't heard of it before especially having grown up in Pasadena. The bakery is strictly to-go orders only & has such a wide variety of items so give yourself lots of time for deciding. We tried both sweet & savory pastries as well as the Beet Salad. Everything was delicious! The Beet Salad was so packed full of flavors & the portion was also very generous that we were able to split it into 4 servings. Ample parking in the back. Definitely looking forward to my next visit to this Pasadena gem!
google avatar

Al T.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor if your ever in Altadena stop by and get something baked fresh daily or hot from the kitchen at Seed Bakery. Where the flavors are bold yet familiar, generous and tasty, and always served by friendly staff.
google avatar

Sean C.

Yelp
Great bakery to visit! Bread and sandwiches are wonderful! Pastries are delicious! Line is short and fast! The owner is really nice and you can ask for suggestions for your choices!
google avatar

Janna G.

Yelp
This place has, without a doubt, the best tasting pastries on the Eastside. They may be the best in LA. We're so grateful we live nearby. Even if we didn't, we would brave traffic for Seed.
google avatar

Meena N.

Yelp
How have I never seen this place just minutes away from my place? I saw a line outside and had to turn around to see what it was for. This is to go only place. No sit down. Guy in the front was very friendly and had recommendations which I always appreciate when it's my first time to a place. The first time, We got the French toast pastry and peach lattice bar. The pastry on the bar was very tasty. Sometimes bakeries focus on the filling and forget about the dough. The French toast pastry was out of this world. The fruit on it was so fresh. Very unique. Loved it. I also bought a hemp loaf to go. Lovely sourdough and dense taste. toasted with a smear of some good butter with a cup of tea. Divine. On our 2nd visit we ordered Latte with almond milk. Their cups have compostable lids which I really appreciate. Also got the Ratatouille bowl. Lots of eggplant. Super flavorful. For dessert we got the Flourless chocolate cake. This was just ok. Icing on the cake is that it's a husband and wife owned business. Can't wait to try more things on their menu.
google avatar

Miguel M.

Yelp
Seed is our favorite go to spot after church. The squash salad and pulled pork sandwich is to die for. The service is like no other, Matthew and the rest of the staff are so friendly and welcoming. They always go above and beyond to make my day. Since the pandemic their dining room is closed so you can only get take out.
google avatar

Tyson T.

Yelp
This place is so good! Haven't had a single item that I didn't like. Pastries are crispy and flaky, sandwiches are flavorful and delicious. The empanadas are also incredible. Well worth a trip to Pasadena!

Yelp
OMG, the roasted califlower sando is amazing. I worried I would be hungry after eating, but I couldn't finish it. So delicious!

JM K.

Yelp
Their Monkey bread is to die for. It's a puzzle and a pastry all in one. Please go and enjoy all they have to offer.

Lauren I.

Yelp
Delicious baked goods and breakfast sandwiches. I generally order ahead since there isn't really anywhere to wait (except for the sidewalk).
