SGD DUBU SO GONG DONG TOFU & KOREAN BBQ

I came here for a quick meal after shopping at HMART. I got the spicy pork bento. It came with a lot of meat but their other sides such as the corn or the kimchi was not too fresh.

I ordered the Korean A1 seafood soondubu . I liked the full amount of tofu and it tasted good. Side dishes include kimchi and corn. It would be perfect if the eggs and shrimps could be fresher!

Ordered before grocery shopping so we can pick up when we are done shopping. Came back to pick up the order, this guy just yelled at us as if he was frustrated with us just asking our order is ready. Just because you forget to make one of my items doesn’t mean you get to yell at the customer. Ordered a seafood pancake with scallions. Where are scallions…? Since the new management or ownership, things are different. Not the SGD that used to be. Very disappointing.

Scam! I ordered A1:Soondubu Jjigae w/beef. All I got was hot liquid with TONS & TONS & TONS of Tofu and 1 TSP of beef. For $20 this was such a rip off. I'm so hungry now. Will definitely avoid. Supermarket part is also expensive. If ordering takeout thoroughly inspect meal or you will be sorry like me!

So good! Definitely coming back! It all paired well together and is a great spot. Someone got theirs from next stall and was dissatisfied because they got the order wrong. Which I almost went too. I'm glad I didn't.

I had there kimchi fried rice without meat. It taste just like it sounds. If you love the taste of kimchi then you like this. If you don’t care for kimchi I wouldn’t recommend that dish.

Got the beef tofu soup, and it came with corn and kimchi. Really good especially considering it was in the middle of a HMart. Decent price, wish there was more beef but service is quick and the tofu soup had a lot of flavor!! Great for a quick lunch if you’re just shopping around the store

This place is inside of H Mart. They have SGD Tofu near loop! the taste about the same as the one in the burbs. They only give you two side dishes, kimchi and oh deng (fish cake)

I should've known when I stepped in and the staff there was Chinese... Not saying anything bad about Chinese people...but if you see Koreans working at a Korean restaurant, you at least know the fan favorites will be decent if not good. My lady and I ordered the bulgogi (her favorite) and I got the donkatsu bento. The bulgogi came out sizzling with onions, but I did notice that it was kind of grey and not very marinated...and to no surprise it tasted so bland. No depth of flavor, and the meat was not great. It was almost like they took frozen chadol and brushed it with some diluted marinade and threw it on the hot stone plate. Not good. My bento was a little better...the salad was good, the tempura was good, the egg roll was mid, their fried rice was good, but that donkatsu was TRASH. The meat had a gamey taste and the sauce was terrible. They drizzle it on top of the donkatsu so it's not as crunchy when I bit into it and the breading was so dark I could tell they used old oil to fry it, or maybe refried an old batch. There was barely any sauce on it so I asked for more, but when they brought it out, it was so watery and not the deep brown you expect from a legit sauce. At this point, I'd rather just have hoisin sauce...It was so bad I couldn't eat more than 4 pieces of the stuff. I'm sure the soontofu is better...it looked pretty good coming out to other tables and so did the bibimbap. I guess I ordered the wrong things. Hahaha... In any case...I doubt I'll be coming back here even though the service was really good and the workers were super polite and ordering was very easy on the ipads.

Tucked within a grocery store among a couple other food vendors. The Soondubu kalguksu was delicious.

SGD consistently delivers rich, flavorful soups that never disappoint. Since they opened a few years ago, this spot has been my go-to for comfort after a long day. If you're in the area, I highly recommend stopping by--you won't regret it.

Clean, organized, smaller manageable menu. Attentive servers. Overall a good meal. We enjoyed the sides and the main dish; the one complaint I would have is that the stone bowl truly burnt the rice. We've had a lot of stone bowls, this just kind of ruined what could have been a great dish.

I love the bento boxes at this place! I usually either order the beef bulgolgi or the pork bulgolgi bento box. The pork bulgolgi has a nice kick to it so I recommend that one if you're craving something spicy. The bento box comes with a nice assortment of fries dumplings, glass noodles, veggies, etc and is always consistently good every time I've been here. It's also conveniently located inside the food court of an H Mart, so you can get your grocery shopping done at the same time!

Solid Chinese food selection, consistently good. Fast friendly service. Another good spot for med groups

Told them tofu tasted Bitter as if there was mold and corn was Stale. They denied it and shrugged their shoulders.

Have you read crying in H-Mart yet? Go read it. Have you heard of the Korean vegan? (You should. She's a Chicago local after all) I'm so excited to see to see Asian culture come to such popularity. Growing up in Asian grocery stores there is a true, raw sense of culture when you go to H-mart. I would even encourage you to shop around before eating this AMAZING soondubu jjigae. Personally, the beef kimchi is my favorite. On the quest of staying warm in Chicago? This is definitely a worth while place to stop.

This is a great, convenient food court foodstand to grab a Korean lunch while you're downtown IF you can manage to avoid a peak meal time. I've seen this food court packed to the gills, but arriving today at about 1pm on a Friday it was nice and relatively quiet. Wife and I picked up a couple of meals, and after about a 7 minute wait, received piping hot and delicious servings of # A1) beef soondubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) ($14.99) and #A20) pork bulgogi bento ($17.99). The servings are a little on the pricey side, but considering the convenience of free parking at the H-Mart parking lot, it's a good deal at this downtown location. We'll be back again sometime I'm sure.

Located in the hmart food court, the portions are decent but dine in space can be quite tight and limited. Service wise was fast and uses a buzzer system( return tray on rack). It's the restaraunt closest to the registers. Only side dish is kimchi and the sunduboo does not come with an egg. Comparing to bcd tofu house, their Sunduboo especially seafood is so much richer and flavored. The dolsot bimbimbap was huge with lots of variety. Overall healthy choice of a dish, though can be pricier than sunduboo ( this is average price though). Interestingly its on a hot plate. The gochujung sauce isn't too salty and overall I was able to get a nice crust. Other than that the only caveat is they provide plastic spoons ( understandable with covid, vaccination required too) which makes it hard to dig off the crust ( I used the chopsticks provided and it worked better). Their kimchi is not kimchi tasting at all ( like sesame oil cabbage), so I mixed it into my bimbimbap. But overall would recommend the soondubu for the solid flavor.

I think many people are confusing this place withe the SGD at different location. This is a small location inside the H Mart. The tofu soup (Soondubu) itself tastes pretty similar to the original locations except with less options. You will not get the full side dish options and stone cooked rices. Also apparently it will cost extra if you ask for more side dishes (according to the "manager" with glasses on) which is unheard of visiting any other Korean restaurants. If you have time please visit the other chicago, glenview or etc locations.

This is a chain that I've tried at several other locations. It's in a convenient location inside the HMart food court. Order your food and hold onto your receipts because they'll call your number when the order is ready. The quality of the soups here are good - they're known for tofu soups so I'd recommend that though the other entrees are decent as well. Prices here reflect the fact that it's located in the city. The soups used to come with banchans but when I last went in September 2022, it came with a very small serving of kimchi. Kimchi wasn't fresh like the other suburb chains :-/

Amazing place! Tried the food here and it was really good. I had a seafood noodle soup and it was delicious. The service was great too, they're welcoming and very nice. The atmosphere of the place itself is actually pretty nice. Calm and you can enjoy the food by yourself or with a friend. Would definitely recommend to anyone who likes Korean style cuisine. I will definitely go there again!

8.5/10 Soft tofu ramen is great for chilly weather. Select a choice of protein (beef, pork, seafood, etc), which is included in the price. Then select a spicy level (low, medium, or very spicy). The noodle is a bit overdone, but the broth is amazing. Bibimbap is another great option. Again, select a choice of protein. I recommend beef. Pour the chili sauce to your liking and mix the bowl well with a pair of chopsticks. Enjoy

Bulgogi beef tasted tough and chewy. Short ribs are tasteful. Service is quick and good. Later ordered Bulgogi beef bento. It is better taste

Good food. Way too expensive for what you get. The seating situation is chaotic as well. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it.

This is my new comfort food. Whenever my gf and go, we would get 2 soondubu regular spice with seafood and a kimchi pancake. It's pretty clear that this place specializes in soondubu, and even though I don't usually like silken tofu that much, this is definitely an exception. Add in the fact that the seafood combination is so good, it's such a great meal. Having a food court in hmart might not be the most ambient location, but honestly I kind of like the bustling atmosphere. Reminds me of Asia a bit :) Would recommend in a heartbeat!

my husband and i split a soondooboo and bento and it was the perfect amount of food. both were delicious! i'm always a huge fan of sgd's soondooboo and today did not disappoint. the spicy level was perfect and it tasted delicious! for veggies, it looks like they had zucchini, broccoli, and onions. the bento box was good with the exception of the japchae - the noodles were undercooked. the dumplings were crispy, salad was tasty, and the bulgogi was cooked well. definitely will be back!

I've eaten a few times here and I can safely say that the food is not the same caliber as the SGD in the suburbs. However, if you want the convenience of getting fairly decent Korean food downtown, then this place gets the job done. I tried the seafood pancake and I would not recommend ordering this here. Granted it could have been a bad pancake day for the chef. The whole thing was drenched in oil and the mixture needed a lot more pancake batter.

Okay this place was amazing I was looking for something hearty (and most importantly warm) when I found this place located in Hmart. I went for the chicken bulgolgi (which comes with a side of rice and kimchi). You order at the cashier, and they call your number and hand you your tray of food. The seating is arranged around the front of the supermarket, but it was a bit crowded when I got there at around 6PM so seating was a little difficult to secure. The bulgolgi comes out sizzling, which was pretty much exactly what I needed on a windy December night. The food itself tasted amazing, and the portion of chicken was very generous. I couldn't finish it myself, and trust me, I tried. My only wish was that the portion of kimchi was a little bigger. I probably had maybe 3 pieces of kimchi in that little bowl. Overall, I really enjoyed this place, and would definitely want to explore the menu more (next time: kimchi stew ).

Always my to go SDB place. It tastes the same every single time which is so important. Consistency is key! I really like how they have other foods that taste just as good tho. And they have bento box options for when you want a variety at once, if all those many side dishes aren't enough for you.

I love going to Hmart to pick up some of my favorite Asian snacks and drinks. When you leave the checkout line, there is a slew of cafes and restaurants just BEGGING for your business. I've had my eyes on this place just because I love Korean food but have never had the restaurant's main dish: Sundubu-jjigae (soondubu jjigae), also known as spicy tofu stew. There is a lot of options to customize your food, from the meat to how much tofu or kimchi you want to the spiciness. I had one with pork and regular spiciness and let me tell you it was comfort in a bowl. The tofu was nice and soft and the spiciness was just right. The soup does come out boiling and bubbling, so it will be HOT, but it WILL cool down. It also comes with kimchi, odeng (fish cake), and rice so the meal overall was filling and well worth the 12 dollars. If you are hungry and can't wait to dive into your Hmart goodies, give this place a shot. It will be even more delicious (dare I say it!?) on a rainy day.

Conveniently located in the small food court within Hmart is where you'll find SGD. A good option to grab a quick & casual sit down meal before or after you decide to grocery shop. No issues with service and I like they have a loud easy to hear PA system to announce when your order is ready. But I think I was a bit underwhelmed by this one due to the fact my bibimbap was kind of just lukewarm all around. The egg, the rice, the bulgogi... all lukewarm like everything had just been sitting around. The kimchi and fish cake side dishes were kind of just meh also. Not sure if it's my recent trip back from Taiwan where I was eating good for two weeks that has me swayed, but this one all around had me feeling all sorts of underwhelmed in terms of food quality and freshness. Maybe next time just go for the tofu soup as it's in the name. 'Til next time, cheers.

I'd rather get some SGD than get an STD, am I right? Well I guess it depends who you're getting it with. I'd rather get an STD with bae than some SGD with Margaret Thatcher. This is a tiny little tofu stand inside the very impressive Hmart inside the loop of Chicago on the westside of downtown. Close to the highway and really cheap compared to some other Korean places in Chicago. Come and get some delicious Korean soup and it'll fill you right up - especially in the winter months. Good value-for-money and friendly people. Definitely my favourite of the stands inside this Hmart and better than the bakery too. I like people that don't boo my jokes. The ones I don't like are the ones that Dubu.

Winter is here and what's better than hot spicy sizzling tofu soup to melt away your coldness, stress, and whatever BS you're going through!!!! Menu: Many different type of tofu soups to choose from, and you can customize to your taste! There are different levels of spice, and you can add additional ingredients like noodles for additional charge. You can always share the soup too! Just make sure to ask for extra bowls and ladles. I love the hot stone rice that it comes with but you can stick with regular rice. Don't forget to crack an egg in your soup! It will elevate your soup! There are also bento boxes there and meat entrees too. We always start with a pancake, split a soup and bulgogi entree. All the sides are refillable so just ask!! Great prices, and great friendly service. :)

Located in HMart, this unassuming counter service Korean restaurant offers some classics of the country's food. We were hungry, so both opted for appetizers; I got the fried dumplings and my partner tried the kimchi pancake. These dumplings are cravable, filled with a ground pork and cabbage mixture and served with a bit of soy sauce on the side for dipping. The pancake, something we almost always order at Korean restaurants, was equally delicious. We both went for kimchi jjigae as a main, that delicious and spicy bubbling broth that's a perfect antidote to a cold Chicago day. They give you a choice between beef and pork here, and, because we've only ever had this soup with pork, both chose that. It was excellent, a rich and flavorful broth, thick with pork, tofu, glass noodles and kimchi. I would return for this alone, but will branch out and try some more of the menu, as it all looks good.

On my trip from California to New York City, this place literally saved me from hunger. I was surviving on snacks on Amtrak and this location is located super close to the Amtrak station. I notice they used to offer fish cake, but only gave me kimchi. The kimchi beef tofu stew for me could have been increased to spicy instead of regular. It was $12.99 + tip + tax. Okay for emergencies, but definitely not the best. I wasn't sure they had a bathroom at HMart and had to go use the one at Union Station. I would probably come back here when I make the trip back from New York City to California using Amtrak.

It's not easy to find good Korean tofu soup (soon do bu) in the city but SGD's tofu soup is really solid! I particularly love the side dishes they serve with the soup too. Service can be a little nicer, sometimes it feels like being scolded by a strict uncle when ordering. It's located in a pretty busy food court area in H Mart but it is a shame that they close so early (around 6pm) that I could barely have dinner there.

When you need something to warm you up on a cold, Chicago day, and you like everything spicy, you can't go wrong with a bowl of soondubu jjigae. I loved how the silky, smooth tofu melted in my mouth with an immediate kick from the broth. Each slurp was so flavorful and the heat was addicting. I'm so happy I don't have to go all the way to the suburbs since they opened up this location at H Mart in the city! The don't give as much banchan as the suburban locations, but it's probably because this is a cafeteria format rather than sit-down restaurant. I feel like the food comes out fast if not faster than the sit-down locations. Whether you dine-in or carryout (I've done both), the portions are generous and delicious. I dine here for lunch quite often, and the quality is always consistent.

Portions are really awesome for the price! This place is a little stall located near the entrance / check out area of HMart. Would say the food doesn't blow me away but it's solid especially factoring in the price and convenience of picking up a meal after grocery shopping.

Good place to order from if you work /live down by UIC/west loop and crave some Korean soup dishes. Food wise, soup is alright and flavorful, they also give you a good quantity of rice which fills you up. Though a bit pricey $13 for a soup. Would I come back, sure only by default because there's nothing else in the area.

SGD is my spot whenever I'm craving some warm, bubbling, Korean stew on these chilly Chicago days. It is so consistent- always delicious! The owner/manager is very courteous and helpful. I love that they accept Apple Pay, and they really package everything perfectly for takeaway orders.

What more can one say? This place is amazing. So much food at a reasonable to slightly expensive price, in one of the best grocery stores in the city. I love HMart and am so glad SGD has a location here. All the food here is very good. Filling, tasty, albeit a little out of the price range I'd like to pay for eating out at a fast food-ish chain the taste more than makes up for it. The lunch rush is a bit nuts, but it's always worth it and pretty efficient!

Located inside Hmart, I've been here twice for lunch. I got a bento box with bulgogi the first time and hot stone plate (dolsot) bibimbap the second time. I thought both were decent, but my one complaint is that the stone plate was not hot enough to crisp the rice, and there was no fried egg included. I personally didn't think the stone plate was worth two dollars more. Of the two I liked the bento box more. Next time I would get that again or try the soondubu ramen, which looked awesome (saw it come out). Prices are average - ~14-15 with tax. The serving sizes of both dishes were quite large, and you get kimchi and fish cakes on the side. The bibimbap was enough for two meals for me. I also tried the kimchi pancake, which I thought was light and delicious, and a bite of the soondubu, which was also very good and came out boiling hot. The japchae that came with the bento box was seasoned perfectly if you ask me. Overall pretty good for a counter service lunch spot near the loop. Definitely satisfies that Korean food craving!

This is the So Gong Dong Tofu located in the food court of the H mart supermarket. SGD Tofu is a chain restaurant with several restaurants out in the burbs. If you are able to go out to the burbs it is definitely worth going out there instead. The SGD Tofu in H mart is fine. The selection is limited but they do have some lunch box selections which are pretty good deals. They have the tofu soups of course as well as things like bbq plates and jap chae. The portions are smaller - they gave me two banchan along with my tofu soup. The quality of the food is distinctly not as good as out in the burbs, especially the BBQ. But considering that it is in a food court, it's fine. I'll be back, many times, just for the convenience.

Terrible experience. The tofu was so hard. I've had tofu soup from this location and the ones in Georgia they have but this was such a bad meal. I've always had super delicious and very soft tofus. Won't be returning

Ambiance: Easy for takeout or dine in cafeteria style at multiple available tables. Ordering at the counter is easier and efficient. Orders are numbered and called when ready. Service: Easy to order with about a 10 minute wait for food to be done. Food: Had the beef bulgogi that comes with rice for $20 (not the bulgogi bowl). The beef was perfectly cooked and juicy. Bulgogi flavor was very tasty. I would like to see a little more rice with the dish. Price: Overall fair but just a little bit on the expensive side given the cafe style of the restaurant. Would recommend overall.

If you are expecting same or similar quality of food as other SGD in suburb from this place, you should think again. I had Soondubu jjigae and it was the worst I ever had. There is no depth of the soup base, just hot pepper added boiling water with a few ingredients. The only side dish was a small kimchi. I am wondering if the headquarter of this franchise knows about this quality. Never again.

To be honest with you, I don't see the big todo about this asian grocery store/food court located in the West Loop area. Mostly it has to do with the quality and quantity of the food and a few other annoyances. To begin with, when you initially walk in all you smell is that stinky combination of raw fish, poultry and whatever type of concoction they're cooking that day and it permeates the entire store. Yuckl!! And on another note, I saw a lot of (unnecessary) tip jars scattered all over the store, surprised there wasn't one in the ladies bathroom, but then again maybe it would've been a little cleaner! Now onto the meal, I chose the chicken bulgogi bento, mainly because of the Yelp pictures and looked like the most appetizing meal on the menu, plus I usually like anything that includes chicken. However I think it was overpriced at $12.00, for what is basically a fast food meal that doesn't include a beverage. Unfortunately it wasn't all that tasty either, it was on the meh side. The chicken was puny, flavorless and cheap tasting, and it was way too SPICY, and the sides were on the opposite end of the spectrum, on bland side as well. And although the meal was cooked to order it tasted like it had been sitting around for quite awhile and it was heated it up, it's the kind of place you would expect that at! The only part of the meal that I actually enjoyed was the plentiful jasmine rice, it was moist, fresh tasting and served hot. Yum! However on another negative note, the cashier never asked me what heat level I preferred, so of course she gives me the five-alarm level, glad I had my ice water bottle with me so I could put out the fire in my mouth. Ewwww! Finally the only reason I would go back here and I mean the only reason is visit the Japanese section, Izakawa Yume, at least their food looked more appealing and fresher and not 5-alarm spicy! So you win some and then you lose some and in this case no dim sum!

I love SGD (So Gong Dong). Their food is always delicious. They make one of the best Soondubu that I've ever had. The regular spice is just the right amount of spice with out blowing out your taste buds - delicious! I've enjoyed both the beef and mixed (beef and seafood) bowls. Also love their other dishes as well - beef short ribs, bulgogi, etc. Try SGD - you won't be disappointed.
