We always enjoy our meals at Shagbark. One of the best restaurants in Richmond. The service is great, and they offer an extended wine list along with a bar full of flavorful cocktails. The food is consistently delicious and very well prepared. This time we ordered the salmon, shrimp pasta, beet salad, and squash blossoms — everything was excellent. One suggestion: consider adding a beef dish. They have a great range of proteins, but a steak with the chef’s twist would be a fantastic addition. Parking is easy, and the location is convenient with quick access to several highways and Richmond hotspots. Highly recommend.

First time visiting this place. Party of five to include my 3yr old and ALL of the staff were so friendly and accommodating. I was pleasantly surprised that they had a high hair and a small kids menu. Ambiance was nice throughout however we were sat right under an AC vent and we were chilly. Our server was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations. We had the charcuterie board which was plentiful and the pork belly melted in your mouth! Second picture is the chicken dish which was so tender and flavorful. The risotto is some of the best I’ve had. Others in my party raved about the duck and flounder. Sticky toffee pudding with bourbon gelato was a perfect ending. We will definitely be back!

Google
Our new favorite upscale restaurant in Richmond. Impeccable service, probably the best we've ever had. Every meal and drink was a winner. Stars of the show were our delicious bread, pork belly appetizer, and the sticky toffee pudding is something we'll be coming back for. Pork chop and strip loin (special) were great as well. Cannot stress how great the service was. I could keep going but just go and experience it yourself!

Google
One of the best dining experiences we have had in Richmond! From the kind service, to the fun, chic atmosphere, and the decadent, mouth watering food…..we couldn’t have asked for a better birthday dinner! Do yourself a favor and order the fried green tomatoes, short ribs, and halibut. Some of the best food I have ever eaten. Every dish was exploding with flavor. Pretty sure you could order any of their dishes and be absolutely satisfied! Can’t wait to come back!

My daughter and I met at shed books for dinner in the evening on a Thursday night. Without a reservation they were still able to see us. We ate off the regular menu. I had the pork chop and she had the chicken and both were absolutely delicious. Cooked perfectly served beautifully with wonderful accompaniments.

Google
Fantastic food in the Henrico area of Richmond! The charcuterie board of Virginia local items and the pork chop were both amazing!

Google
This is hands down my absolute favorite restaurant in RVA. My husband and I live basically across the street from this establishment, and go pretty frequently. We have never once had a bad meal here. The staff is absolutely wonderful and extremely attentive. We usually sit at the bar, but on occasion we have reserved a table. The dishes are inventive and fun, and the soups are my favorite. I would recommend coming here hands down!

Yelp
Great service, our waiter was extremely personable and professional. Had the pork chop and the flounder. The pork was absolutely fantastic, left nothing to be desired. The flounder was also good but was overshadowed. Dessert was also great. Walked right in on a Saturday night and was very pleasantly surprised.

Yelp
We had an interesting meal here. The staff were really friendly and let us enjoy the bar an hour before our table was ready. Highlights were the chicken fried oyster starter and the lamb loins in the main were delicious. Opportunities: The fried green tomatoes were a confusing dish because it came with shrimp & blue cheese, but I couldn't taste the cheese. The braised beef special had three strong flavor profiles (corn, fennel, and braised beef) that required them to be eaten together to make sense, due to them competing on the plate. Lastly, while the lamb loin was the best meat of the evening, we were bummed how the veggies it came with felt like over cooked stir fry pieces covered in a brown sauce that didn't impart much flavor, just visual appeal. We had a great time but just wished the food rose to the beautiful decor and service of the restaurant.

Yelp
We had a great time celebrating a birthday at Shagbark. It's an upscale seafood and steak restaurant in Richmond. Only available reservation was 5:00, so we decided to dine like early birds for the evening. I ordered a local passion fruit cider - it was crisp and flavorful. My partner ordered a special eggnog based cocktail that he raved about the entire meal. For entrees, we ordered the chicken and the salmon. The chicken had a crisp bacon- like topping that was delicious. The salmon was perfectly cooked, though I skipped on the grapefruit garnish. The restaurant itself is stunning - beautiful chandeliers and light fixtures. The art work on the walls is a bit eclectic but overall lovely atmosphere.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing! This spot has been on my places to try when I visit Richmond and it did not disappoint!! The atmosphere was fairly relaxed and chill and it wasn't super busy. However, I do recommend making a reservation just to ensure you have a table. The food was absolutely delicious!! Keep in mind that their menu does change so my entree may no longer be served there depending on the season. Everything was absolutely delicious and just perfect. I especially loved the scallop entree I got and their pork belly was perfection. The Duck Breast was so succulent and the pork chop was just amazing. Overall, this is a really wonderful spot with delicious food and a great menu that is changed occasionally so there's always something new to try! I highly recommend popping by if you're in the area and looking for a nice spot to have dinner!

Yelp
We have chosen Shagbark a handful of times over the years and always enjoy our visits. This outing went exceptionally well because it feels like they have figured out how to lower the volume level so you can have a convo without yelling. Absolutely love their natural element aesthetic with the wood panels and the clean but cozy feel; even the bathrooms are aesthetically pleasing. We started out the evening with some "shagnog" and a classic old fashioned. Their signature eggnog cocktail was the way to go. The nutmeg meringue made the spiked eggnog feel delicate and classy, especially in the coupe glass. It was actually too good bc I drank mine way too fast and forgot to take pictures! Before our appetizers came we received some complimentary bread and salted honey butter which was pretty awesome for how it tasted and that we got for free. Complimentary bread is not happening much these days. We actually got three different varieties too. Cornbread, thyme roll and a spicy chipotle bread. For apps we did the ceviche and the fried green tomatoes. The ceviche was done very well with a nice acidity and several levels of flavor. The fried green tomatoes were also very good and probably could've been eaten on their own without the tomato jam, but that was a nice touch. Really loved the salad and sliced almonds that went with it. For dinner, we ordered the herb roasted filet of swordfish, the rosemary garlic grilled beef tenderloin special and the crispy skinned Chesapeake rockfish. All three of us really enjoyed our entrées completely. Almost so much that we didn't want to share lol. My swordfish was done perfectly; the smoked Surry county sausage and the Hanover field peas prepared ala Hoppin John style that accompanied was delicious. Slightly on the salty side, but didn't stop me from cleaning my plate. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the tenderloin special and could not stop talking about the gravy (foie gras emulsion) and the blackberry veal jus. Having had one bite I agree it was very good. My father-in-law really enjoyed his rockfish and was impressed by the cornucopia of ingredients that went with it underneath that included a candy roaster squash puree AND a red curry coconut cream along with mushrooms, bok choy and peanuts. Sadly we were to full to partake in dessert but it's something to look forward to on our next visit. Def saw some stuff I want to try.

Yelp
The amazing Raven was our friendly-helpful-happy server made the evening fun. All tables in dinning room were full. The short ribs were excellent & the duck breast. Great list of desserts: they are known for sticky toffee pudding which we both ordered. Different & deeelicious! "This place is really hopping" my friend Robin said.

Yelp
If you are in search of an intimate dining experience with a calm, serene environment then you should give Shagbark a try. I opted for appetizers as a meal. The Cesar salad was good, but could use less char because it had a burnt after taste. The fried oysters were amazing! I would highly recommend them 10/10. The oysters were good and tender and the sauce was flavorful. The cocktails were also a good balance of alcohol and mixers. They weren't too strong or overpowering.

Yelp
Outstanding! Simply perect - Every - Visit We have been dining here multiple times a year since we moved to RVA in 2017 and EVERY visit has been perfect. Excellent service, lovely ambiance, and the freshest, most flavorful food. Nowhere else has ever come close to the level of consistency and excellence. Chef Walter Bundy is a master at combining unique ingredients and flavors, so every bite is memorable. The menu changes seasonally to incorporate the freshest seasonal items. It is just a pleasure. You might find it to be on the pricey side, though I assure you it is worth every penny. Between the excellent service, attention to every detail of your dining experience, and the freshest ingredients, plated beautifully, you won't be disappointed. Tonight, Sergio led our table service, and he was amazing! Personable and efficient, checking in at the right times. My rating rationale +1 Service +1 Food~Taste/flavor/quality +1 Presentation +1 Atmosphere/vibe +1 Value *You can check out my previous reviews too where I sing their praises

Yelp
My wife and I celebrated four years of marriage at Shagbark on 3/16/23. After a less than stellar experience at Midlothian Chef Kitchen I put a lot of pressure on Shagbark to make up for another restaurant's complete failure. I'll cut right to the chase; Shagbark is now my GOLD STANDARD for fine dining in Richmond. As a matter of fact, in 2 days (8/23/23), we are dining here with our son to celebrate his 18th birthday! The reason who chose Shagbark is because the entire experience was flawless from start to finish. It starts with the wonderful hospitality of our server. He set the entire tone for the evening. He encouraged me to move out of my comport zone and order a drink with a bit of hair on it. I'm glad he did talked me into it because really liked the drink. We ordered two starters which were fantastic. One was a special which were these fire roasted peppers with pecans, onions, and a delicious sauce. Our second appetizer was the crispy Chesapeake Bay chicken fried oysters. That app was by far the best. Everything about the dish was perfectly balanced. For our main entrees my wife ordered the Parmesan crusted filet of flounder and I had the cast iron seared duck breast. Both of our entrees were spot on. This is exactly what you would expect from an executive level chef. Lots of places in Richmond serve good food but on this night the CLASS and hospitality of the staff really stood out. Thank you Shagbark.

Yelp
The ambiance is there, cute lounge, sweet and attentive bar staff. Had a lovely mescal cocktail. Our actual dinner though- eh. My husband had the paella which was okay but a bit too moist with additional stock. My swordfish and salad- lovely simply dreased greens qnd grape tomatoes but my swordfish was so thin and overcooked it hurt my teeth a bit. Thr attenpt at a glaze turned the tiny pieces of fish into to sonetung crunchy qnd unrecognizable.

Yelp
We came here for the first time to celebrate an anniversary, and it was well worth the drive. The food was all excellent, and the restaurant itself is very comfortable with all of its natural decor and chairs that didn't put our legs to sleep by the end of meal. Service was impeded by an unforeseen storm of people crowding the bar area, but both our server and the manager present persevered and showed us a splendid evening. We hope to return again and sample more of the menu.

Yelp
Shagbark is top notch in all grading categories. Service Food~Taste/flavor/quality Presentation Atmosphere/vibe Value The service is always polite, attentive and professional. The menu is always exciting and flavorful. I love how they offer the set of foods (chicken, pork, beef, fish/seafood and vegetarian) and modify the preparation and sides. The menu is always evolving! The presentation is always perfect. I'm always comfortable and relaxed with the environment of the restaurant. The upscale food offerings are on par with acceptable pricing. This past evening was all of the above. The braised lamb was so tasty and tender. The Mai Mai was very flavorful. The wines were perfect with our meals. Shagbark has an awesome wine list and if you ever need recommendations you should always ask for Rodney. We celebrate most holidays and birthdays with a great meal at Shagbark.

Yelp
My husband and I picked Shagbark for a dinner to celebrate our anniversary. It was recommended by some people we know and after checking out the menu, we were sold. I made a reservation for 6:30 and we were seated promptly when we arrived. We were seated at a two-top table...I was hoping because it was a special event that we would get a premium seat, but we were seated in kind of a hallway area with not much of a view. For drinks I ordered a glass of red wine and my husband ordered an old fashioned. Later in the meal I also ordered coffee, which is Lamplighters coffee, which is yummy. We warned the server that we were going to order a lot to try but will take home what we didn't finish. For appetizers we got a half dozen oysters from Tangiers. They were really good! Got to support Tangiers because the island is suffering because of climate change. We also got the fried oysters, which were good but desperately needed acid and/or salt, and the scallops. Final appetizer was the ham and cheese board, which is a ham spread and pimento cheese. To be honest, this was the best of the apps. For entrees I got a steak special and my husband ordered lamb with pasta. We were so stuffed we took most of the entrees home. These too were in need of salt, but they were cooked to the requested temperature. My daughter wanted the sticky toffee pudding so we ordered that to go for her. I did sneak a taste and it was wonderful. I'll definitely give Shagbark another try. There were so many interesting menu items that I'd like to try.

Yelp
The four of us came here for dinner for the first time and were tremendously pleased with both the service and the excellent food. My wife and I both had the highly recommended porkchop and thought it to be delicious. The chop was cooked perfectly and not at all dry. It was served with Jalapeno Hominy (ho-hum) and Vinegar Roasted Cabbage (wonderful). My daughter had the Shrimp & Grits and proclaimed it to be the very best ever. For dessert? The Sticky Toffee Pudding with Bourbon Gelato and it, too, was outstanding. What a great place this is... Food: 5 stars Service: 5 stars Value: 4 stars Ambiance: 4 1/2 stars

Yelp
Great experience, happy it was on business expense. The restaurant is really pretty and has a casual, but upscale vibe. I arrived ahead of our group, so had a drink at the bar. The bar is small and all seats were filled, so used one of 2 standing tables. Bartender was excellent, was easily able to give a good option for hazy, NE IPA, quickly came over as each new person arrived and service and closing the tab was fast. Our large group dinner was executed flawlessly, service was a stand out! We had a variety of appetizers and all were good. I ordered pork chops and they were delicious. I really enjoyed the light blueberry sauce and the side Gorgonzola bread pudding; very different. For dessert, I ordered peanut butter and chocolate terrine and coffee (Lamplighters). The terrine was so light and airy. I didn't take a picture, but I really loved the look and feel of their coffee cups. Small touches! The price point is expensive, but they do everything you expect for it - creative food, great flavor, excellent service, and atmosphere.

Yelp
Uniquely couture food selections. Fresh food beautifully plated. Bar filled either crafted drinks and wine choices to pair well with the food. Recommended if you are trying to impress out of towners. Pricey but well worth it for a special evening or event. I booked the private space for an awards dinner for a work summit. Everyone loved it. I wish I could recommend a particular item to try, but they are all so good I can't choose just one.

Yelp
Went to celebrate my aunt's birthday. We were greeted and seated promptly. Our server was actually the same server I had last July. We started with the scallop ceviche and the ham salad and pimento cheese plate. Delicious and great presentation. We had the crab cakes. Delicious and a good mix of flavors with the polentos and arugula. You must try the crab cakes before they disappear from the menu. I love the ambience of Shagbark. It's fresh, clean and inviting. I like the parking behind the building so you don't have to street park or use the parking garage.

Yelp
Great place - attentive service, food was good, we had a nice evening there. It was our first time at this restaurant and we felt taken care of; why only four stars? We got the wrong app, but it was taken back promptly and the right one came after a while. The cod dish was okay, not stellar. The short rib on the other hand - to die for!
google avatar

Yelp
Food was well prepared & service was excellent. We had a party of five and all of us were pleased with the food options. We started with two appetizers- fried oysters & green fried tomatoes. Both were prepared well and were as described on the menu. A basket of breads and butter were also delivered to enjoy. The meals at our table were: Icelandic cod ( portion was a bit small but cooked well), chicken breast, pork chop, short ribs and venison bolognese. It sounds like the menu rotates a bit with the seasons but each entree was very flavorful.Enjoyed the speciality cocktails- mango verde & shakeshark smash. Great place to celebrate!

Yelp
Our server was Talal. He was excellent. Started with appetizers. There were four of us. The Beet and apple salad was okay. The Soft shell crab came tempura style and was very good. There was a spicy side with it. Just too spicy for me. And it sat on a corn dish. Creamed and wonderful. Then we were asked if we wanted bread. Oh yes we do. The bread was delicious. And I love the butter that is served with it. Main entries; I had the duck. I was too full so most of it was packed up and taken home . But I did have the duck skin that was nice and crispy. Spouse had the swordfish. He ate it all. And the couple we were with had salmon. They ate it all and enjoyed. We were all too full for dessert so dinner was finished. I also had the Bold Rock tangerine cider. It was delicious. I thought it was slightly sweet. Although I was told it is considered dry. I liked it. The restaurant is pleasant and comfortable Easy to roll in with my wheelchair which is always appreciated by me Next morning: Just a quick update. Left over soft shell crab was just great leftover for breakfast this morning.

Yelp
OMG. Had reservations here for my early birthday dinner on a Wednesday at 6:45pm. The restaurant was fairly busy but not quite full with plenty of available seating at the bar. Upon arrival, my fiance and I were asked who's birthday it was and I excitedly claimed it as mine! It was a nice touch that because his mother made the reservation and told them that we were celebrating a birthday, they went the extra mile to wish me a happy birthday at the door, personally. We were seated promptly and my fiance's parents arrived just a couple minutes after us. I ordered the Shagbark Smash with blood orange, Aperol, vodka, and lemon. It was delicious! I actually ended up having two. For starters, we ordered the Mussels, the Fried Oysters, Pork Belly, and were also brought some of their house bread with honey butter and sea salt. All the appetizers were delicious, not only the main component but all components -- even the collard greens with the oysters and the grits with the pork belly. My soon-to-be father-in-law said that the grits were some of the best he had ever had! For dinner, I had the Short Ribs with pappardelle pasta. The dish was amazing! So delicious, and the short ribs were cooked perfectly. It was obviously rich, so I ended up boxing half, which is going to make a perfect leftover dinner! For dessert, we had the Sticky Toffee Pudding and OMG -- it was SO good. All of the food here is perfectly balanced, and the toffee added a nice crunch. They even brought it out with a candle for my birthday! All in all, 10/10 -- food, drinks, and service. It's safe to say that Shagbark might be one of my new favorite restaurants in the Richmond area!

Yelp
Amazing So it's anniversary time for us and we usually go to a nice joint. This did not disappoint. We didn't know what to expect so we dressed up well dressed up for us and it was worth it They greeted us at the door and acknowledged our anniversary which was awesome. The atmosphere made you want to eat. We started with tequila shots. Just 1 each. We ordered a glass of wine and then the appetizer. But first the server Tariq was awesome. The tequila was his idea. We ordered our food and they brought out a bread plate. 3 different breads with a tasty whipped butter to spread. 1-onion loaf 1-corn bread 1-pimento bread. So tasty. Then came the appetizer it was a pork belly and they split the plate it had a salad and a piece of bread with it. Very tasty and flavorful. Gone in a few seconds. Wanted more. Then came the cod so fresh and light and wonderful flavor. Very well presented and flavored. Dessert is next and that was sticky toffee. Wow wow wow. So cool and so amazing. This place is awesome for a nice evening out. It is a little on the speedy side but not too bad. Loved it and will be back. Tariq is an awesome server and made the night very cool.

Yelp
One of our favorite restaurants in the RVA. I can't remember any bad meals here. Most recently , the duck was succulent. The entree portions are generous. Small but good cocktail list. The decor is a little taxidermy heavy but that's my only complaint and it's minor for the food.

Yelp
Cool restaurant with homemade butter and delicious bread. Had the oysters, flounder and pork chop and everything was very good. It was a bit on the pricey side but still worth it. The founder was a little on the spicy side but I enjoyed it.

Yelp
The ambiance is great and the food is equally amazing. I had the best pork chop at shagbark!

Yelp
We came here for an anniversary dinner and we're blown away at the amazing service! Our server was friendly, attentive, made fantastic recommendations and made our night! The entire team was really 10/10. The patio was nice and we were there on a beautiful evening for outdoor dining. The food was 9.8/10, pretty much perfection! The bread plate is a great beginning. We had the chicken fried oysters & pork belly to start, both were absolutely divine!! 10/10 no notes. I can't wait to return for those dishes alone. For entrees we had the duck breast, which I can't stop dreaming of... and can't wait to have again. The seafood stroganoff which was also delightful. Wine and cocktails were delicious, I need a case of the Autre Monde Pinot Noir the server recommended to us. The firefly cocktail was well balanced and a great start to the meal. Overall I will be recommending to friends and DEFINITELY returning. This spot is fantastic and the team is AMAZING!!

Yelp
I went to the soft opening many many years ago, and I still adore every morsel of this food. It is a unique experience and you cannot miss it.

Yelp
Wow! We were blown away by how delicious everything was. My husband and I went for a belated Anniversay and we are looking for an excuse to go back! I started with the sweet onion soup and he got the mussles. I wouldn't normally order onion soup (it just doesn't ring my bell) but it was finished with lump crab and lardon. So good! The mussles were so tasty and the broth was so good, we got whatever was left, to go. Then there is the bread. Damn. And the butter. Double Damn. SO GOOD! My husband ordered the hanger steak and I had salmon. Both were cooked to perfection. It was probably the best meal we've had in a LONG time.

Satara W.

Yelp
The menu is very limited. I ordered a $17 salad and asked for salmon to be added. When I received the check I was charged for the $38 salmon dinner. When I asked to speak to a manager I was met the dismissive attitude of Zach. He approached our table with a dismissive attitude, his mind was made up before he spoke with me, he was not helpful and listened to not understand but to respond and frankly he was very unfriendly and absolutely rude. Zach was asked to leave the table because of how uncomfortable his condescending behavior made us as guests. I wouldn't mind paying for the item but I should have been told what was happening so I could make a choice. After I paid, the waitress acknowledged the issue and we came to a resolution; which should have initially happened before our night being ruined with such poor customer service. Zach, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with a nice ambiance but the entrees have been hit or miss for me. I either love it or feel meh about it. But I will say I would come back a million times just for the VIDALIA ONION BISQUE. It was seriously the best thing I've tasted in a while. Unfortunately it's seasonal so I need them to share the recipe asap!! :)

Yelp
My wife and I stumbled upon Shagbark after a grueling drive. We initially felt a little uncomfortable, as we were under dressed, due to a road trip. I'm glad we didn't let that steer us away from an awesome dining experience. Great food, great ambiance, exceptional service.

Yelp
Very disappointing experience coming here to celebrate a special occasion. Go somewhere else. The service is horrendous. We spent over an hour here and only got 1 cocktail, one app, and a dozen oysters. We had been sitting at our table for 15 mins before anyone even came to our table to give us water. The runner offered us extra bread (our server was not coming to our table) and we said yes, please, and he cleared our bread plate. We assumed as any sane person would that he would bring us a fresh plate of bread, but he brought back our dirty plate with new bread and even brought us back our dirty forks, and knives on that plate with the new bread. The dirty utensils were replaced back on top of the bread. Attached photo. WHAT? Someone finally cleared our oyster plate but no other dirty plates and ten more minutes went by with nobody coming to our table and the dirty plates remained on our table. Finally someone came and brought the peach and tomato salad, which we had so appreciated they split for us on two plates. Sadly, the peaches were not yet ripe so they were flavorless and rock hard. If you have a peach dish on the menu, it should be served with ripe ready to eat peaches. Otherwise, don't offer it. We wanted to send it back, so we waited waited waited and nobody ever came. Our server went to several other tables surrounding us but never came to us. It was so bizarre. Finally we physically got up and walked to the hostess stand and asked for the manager. The manager was very unprofessional, never apologized, never offered a resolution or attempted to help or show any customer service skills or consideration. In the end, we told him we wouldn't be paying for the oysters because he asked was there something wrong with the oysters that you aren't paying I said yes, I ate them while my previous courses dirty dishes sat there, my water glass was empty (this was my only beverage and it was gone), and I didn't have everything I wanted to eat them with. Our server never checked on us once they were dropped and we had to flag down a runner to grab horseradish for us. The manager said - so you're just walking out on your bill? I said I'm not walking out, I'm telling you we aren't paying due to the horrible food and service and how you've treated us. The manager rolled his eyes, slapped the checkbook closed, and stormed off. The hostess who overheard all of this apologized to us on our way out. She was lovely. Just go somewhere else.

Yelp
Delicious food, solid service, and a nice ambiance. We were in the lounge area and hope to check out the dining room next time.

Yelp
Our favorite restaurant for a night out in Richmond. Soups are almost always extraordinary, spectacular salads, enjoyed many entrees and love the toffee pudding. Service is attentive and thoughtful, but not obtrusive.

Yelp
First timer alert. Overall I had an amazing time with a couple of friends over a nice dinner and cocktails. Definitely a finer dining experience but still casual. Smaller portions with the attention to presentation. Food came out prepared very well. The wait staff were super professional and knowledgeable about their menu items. The bar staff were excellent as well. I would go back again for apps and cocktails but the dinner menu was a tad slacking for me personally (but that's subjective). Good job shagbark.

Yelp
My new company asked me to pick a spot for dinner, and Shagbark did not disappoint - made me look good. Everything from the ambiance, to the service, to the food and drink were impeccable. Ravyn was our server, and she was very attentive and knowledgeable. The wine selection is also extensive - there's something for everyone. 10/10 recommend - I will be back!

Yelp
My office and I went here last night for a farewell dinner, and I have to say I will definitely be back. The atmosphere was so warm and inviting. Our waiter (Javon) was very informative and hospitable. The food was pricy but DELICIOUS and well worth it. A plus is that it's less than 15 minutes from where I live, so that's a no brainer. Great location, great vibes, and great food/drinks!

Yelp
My wife and I have been to Shagbark several times. My wife's company had their office holiday party there in 2023 and I also attended. Thus, I am rating on experience. Dissatisfied and disappointed. The service was rushed and for a $250 dinner for two joined by another couple for a $250 for two I feel obligated to share the experience. The waitress came across to the two ladies in our 4 top as she was indifferent and as cold as my wife and my filet. The filet minion oscar special was not what a $46 should entree should entail. It was two thin slices of meat with no recognizable crab oscar. Using the operative word of 'recognizable' ......this was not the experience I am used to recognizing at Shagbark.

Yelp
This was an early Anniversary meal and we were greeted with "Happy Anniversary" by both the host and our server Tyrique as well as when we left. Very sweet. We decided to get things we have heard of on cooking shows but haven't tried yet ... we started with pork belly appetizer that my husband would have licked if he could. I didn't care for the texture but flavor was good. My husband found it fabulous and they were so sweet to half each of our orders for us so we each got beautiful plates though we were sharing everything. We were also served an assortment of breads that each were yummy. There was a sun dried tomato, and onion, and a corn bread. My hubs had Malbec and I had a glass of something Blanc plus we had a shot of tequila which was my first. All yummy. Our entree was the cod over shrimp risotto and it was wonderful. So many layers to it. We closed off with the sticky toffee pudding and our server threw in the spice cake dessert. Both so delicious. We left happy. Very.

Yelp
Food was great. Setting and ambiance are very nice. Service ... not so much. We were with our daughter who is her middle twenties and she ordered a glass of wine and our server suddenly thought she was a member of law enforcement and demanded ID, which certainly altered the mood. Remember when the customer and customer experience were important to service people? Not here. Plenty of better choices nearby.

Yelp
One of the best dinners I have ever had. We came to celebrate a birthday, and everything was truly exceptional. Shagbark feels quaint and local, and it is truly a gem. Appetizer: Tabasco oysters. 6 of them came in the dish, and they were warm, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Bread: they served 2 different types of complimentary bread--a fresh baked dinner roll and a slice of sour dough--paired with a sea salt butter. Dinner: The salmon was served HOT and not a second over cooked. It was served over polenta (AMAZING) and Brussels sprouts, and the dish was beautifully presented. Highly recommend. My friend ordered the swordfish and also thoroughly enjoyed it! Dessert: Our server talked us into the sticky toffee pudding. We were full, but decided to split it based on her strong recommendation, and my gosh. After we took a bite, we asked why we even ordered meals. One of the best desserts we had both ever had. So moist, not overly sweet, and the gelato was a perfect compliment. Service: ANJA!!!! What a gem!! The first thing she did was greet us and warn us that she has a stutter. So unnecessary, but thoughtful nonetheless. Let me tell you, Anja is the BEST. She is SO knowledgeable about the menu. She pointed us in all of the right directions and made sure we had the most lovely evening. We made sure to say bye to her before we left, and we ended up sticking around an extra 10 minutes just to hang out and talk about all things Richmond food!! 10/10 recommend Shagbark. Worth every penny spent.

Yelp
Nice looking restaurant. Kinda noisy. Food and beverage was fine. Our waiter was great too. I'll go back but probably sit at the bar . It seemed quiet over there. Some 18 year old Chivas would be nice.

Yelp
Shagbark was recommended to us because we like Longoven. Solid experience. Portions larger than expected. I ordered the salmon . Perfectly crispy skin, tomato marmalade, and a bright sauce. My husband had the duck, and his only complaint (if you can call it that) was that he wish he had more of the cherry vinegar sauce. I always like to recognize good service. Leigh Ann was excellent. Made us feel very comfortable and knew the menu thoroughly. Enjoyed our reservation on the patio, though the inside of the restaurant is beautiful. We'll definitely be coming back and may make a special trip just for dessert.

Yelp
SO good. For our first real date night since the pandemic began, we deliberated quite a bit over which restaurant to try. We eventually chose Shagbark and we were so glad we did! The food was incredible and our server was absolutely fantastic. We started with the Fried Green Tomatoes app. My husband being a Georgia boy gave it a 10/10. As an entrée, he ordered the Duck breast and savored every bite, I ordered the Icelandic Cod and I'm still drooling thinking about it. The combination of flavors was perfect. My only non-positive feedback is as a family who tries to eat mostly plant-baI wish they had another vegan/vegetarian dish. Thankfully we go "Flexitarian" when we eat out but I have a couple of vegan friends who told me they've never tried it because there aren't enough options. Overall, it was a great experience though and we plan to return!

Yelp
Came here for a second time around and was just as pleased as the first time! Started off the dinner with a delicious and refreshing cocktail while my boyfriend enjoyed a glass of red wine. Our appetizer was the chicken fried oysters which were quite delicious (considering that I hate oysters lols). I got the shrimp and grits for dinner, which was amazing! Very flavorful, portion size just right, and was very satisfied with the meal. The boyfriend opted for a hanger steak which he enjoyed thoroughly. We did outdoor dining due to COVID and not wanting to be indoors in a closed space, and the patio area outside is quite comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. All in all I enjoyed my night, and I can see this place steadily being a regular for us!

Yelp
Haven't been here in a while but this place will always deserve 5 stars in my opinion. Been here plenty of times in the past and have never had a bad or even slightly unpleasant experience. The food, the service, and the general vibe of this place is great. The ever changing menu always has something for everybody. I always suggest this place to people who are looking for something special for dinner.
