Pakistani canteen serving delicious chicken tikka, biryani, naans
"The Pakistani canteen-style restaurant in Whitechapel is a straightforward spot with a short menu that ranges from homemade samosas to chicken tikka, to curries, daal, biryani, and naans. The chicken tikka, whether on a plate or in a roll, is particularly delicious. That said, the meat biryani—a mountainous plate of moist rice mixed with flaking pink beef—is pretty fantastic too." - jake missing, daisy meager, sinead cranna, rianne shlebak
"Can you imagine the glare you felt as you first came into the world? It’s hard, isn’t it. Worry not because you can also swing by Whitechapel for an adjacent. The glare of Shalamar Kebab House has sobered us up on more than one occasion. In any other setting, this kind of assault would be migraine-worthy, but in this reliable Pakistani canteen it becomes reassuring." - jake missing
"For all of London’s extortionate living expenses and heinous overpricing, there are still unbelievably delicious bargains to be had for a few quid. Take this chicken tikka from Shalamar, just off the Whitechapel Road. The Pakistani canteen-style restaurant is low-key in every way apart from flavour. The chicken tikka—which is under a fiver—is sensational. The kebab is juicy to the point of the meat falling apart under half-arsed fork pressure, while being charred on the edges and purring with chilli powder and turmeric." - jake missing, rianne shlebak
"“The Genesis cinema has a notoriously excellent and thorough security guard who laughs in the face of rustling bags and contraband Haribo. However, I speak from experience when I say that a back pocket chicken tikka roll smothered in raita from Shalamar can be sneaked through. If you power walk past before he clocks the irresistible smell, that is. Both of these places, Shalamar and the Genesis, got me through big chunks of this year. Neither pretend to be anything fancy and both succeed in being lovely, low-cost spaces that welcome anyone and everyone.” — JM" - oliver feldman, heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak
"Shalamar Kebab House is a straightforward, white-lit, canteen-style Pakistani restaurant that lives in the literal shadow of Tayyabs. Unlike that legendary London spot, Shalamar is made for swift but always-satisfying meals—from freshly made chicken tikka, naans straight from the tandoor, and steaming piles of biryani. Given its strip lighting and affordable prices, Shalamar isn’t somewhere you tend to spend a lot of time, but it pretty much guarantees a good one when you’re in need of filling flavours." - rianne shlebak, sinead cranna, jake missing, daisy meager
