"For years, two large and distinguished Shanghai restaurants stood almost side-by-side on Mott just north of Canal, Shanghai Café Deluxe and Shanghai Heping, providing fierce competition where soup dumplings were concerned. Now the first of those is closed, leaving Shanghai Heping (named after a public park in Shanghai) to prevail. Its dumplings are very good, with a particularly rich dipping sauce that doesn’t stint on the black vinegar and fresh ginger." - Robert Sietsema

"Newer soup dumpling restaurants may offer inventive fillings like truffle and chocolate, but Shanghai Heping sticks to the classics. Steamed xiao long bao filled with pork or crab are usually the top option here, but the pan-fried version with fluffy dough and crisp bottoms are equally good. Service is notoriously gruff, but the Shanghainese specialties, like soy-braised gluten and vegetarian duck more than make up for it." - The MICHELIN Guide

"When faced with the long, no-frills menu, there should read a caution sign to not miss out on the crab and pork soup dumplings. The plump, juicy filling and flavorful broth held in each delicate wrapper with soy-ginger seasoning explains the afternoon crowd lunching out of takeout boxes at the entrance. Large bamboo steamer baskets line most tables, and the seared pan-fried pork dumplings are not to miss either. Cold appetizers also shine, like dark soy- and sugar-cooked bamboo shoots with wheat gluten, or thinly sliced stir-fried eel with chives. There are larger, steaming hot plates to choose from like Shanghai rice cakes with beef. The 'Eight Jewel Rice' dessert matches a mound of sticky rice with red bean paste, dates and golden raisin 'jewels.'" - The MICHELIN Guide

Google
The food was good. Really big portions, and not expensive at all. Some of the dishes are quite good. The lobster rice cake, and chestnut chicken are great. Pork belly and pine nut whole fish were ok. The Xiao Long Bao was really mediocre. The place looks wore down and needed cleanup and renovation.

Google
Shanghai Heping restaurant located in Chinatown New York will deliver a good Chinese gastronomical experience for sure. The place seats conveniently close to subway stations and is easily accessed. Prices are very reasonable. Food tastes fantastic. The individual meals are generous and may feed 2 with moderate appetite. Staff communicates very basic in English but enough to mutual understanding. Definitely a place to check whenever in Chinatown vicinity. Good experience, keep up the good food!

Google
went in on Saturday evening; the food was decent and the dumplings were exceptional; the staff were friendly and the service was quick

Google
This place serves very amazing and tasty authentic Chinese food. The only thing I recommend is I wish they put more minced pork in the mapo tofu since there was barely any meat in it. But all the others foods were amazing. They also provide refreshing hot tea and hot and spicy sour soup free of service. The staff speak fluent English, Mandarin, and Cantonese.

Google
One star OVERALL Food - terrible , egg drop soup look like it could feed a family of 6, but tastes terrible - no seasoning at all. The dishes look appealing but not very tasteful. Service - FAST but no talking and the staff is very BOSSY. Atmosphere - comfortable but would not return due to the staff. The audacity of the server to ask for MORE TIP because we did not GIVE enough even though we tipped well over the twenty percent.

Google
I’ve been to many of the old Chinatown haunts since moving to the area a few years ago and this is going to become THE spot for pan fried Shanghai noodles. Wow. So good. The pork soup dumplings are also stellar.

Google
second time here and the food was VERY good. The owner may seem to have an attitude but that’s just how everything works. She’s actually quite nice. I came here for the food so I wasn’t bothered with whether the service is good or not. The whole dinner cost us $68 for 4 people with 5 dishes. They were all very tasty. Don’t let the negative reviews scare you off because this place deserves to have more business. Shout out to the hard working owner too. She was the only one taking care of all the tables but still very helpful. Definitely give this place a try guys!

Google
When I'm in the area, I tend to pick up an order or two of the soup dumplings. Very good food, but the service is very cut and dry, which is both good and bad. The service is to the point: you'll get your food, your table, without any sentiments. Honestly, I prefer it this way, but this may turn other people off.

Yelp
I booked this spot on a short notice for my girlfriend's birthday dinner with 20 others. There was a little miscommunication regarding the private room + karaoke set up when we got there but the staff was so friendly and nice about the mishap. We order a ton of food for our two tables - some highlights were the west lake soup, salt pepper pork, pork soup dumplings, and the tofu. The atmosphere was amazing and even though the mic machine in the karaoke was broken, we had enough belters in our group that it didn't matter. It's a very affordable spot that is also a bring your own alcohol with no corking fee, so if you're just trying to have a wild night and spot to pregame, this is the spot!

Karen N.

Yelp
The dishes always taste delicious. The restaurant is very spacious with a lot of room for everyone. The service has gotten a lot better than it used to be. If you're in the mood for Shanghai food, this is the place to be!

Yelp
Let me begin by saying that my mom used to think of this place as one of her favorite spots in Chinatown to eat. However, after our last visit, that perception has drastically changed! Customer service is very important in the restaurant industry, and when it is not done well, it can backfire. At this restaurant, it was obvious when we saw customers who had come after us but got their food all at one time before we even got one dish was a bad start. When we did get served, each of our three dishes came out piecemeal, and we had to ask for serving plates large enough to eat the meal. We ordered the beef fried rice, crispy shrimp with salt and pepper with broccoli. When we asked for larger plates, one person said they didn't have any. So we asked another worker who then brought us a wet plate from downstairs. I was in shock. In response to the negative service, I did not feel comfortable tipping a high amount. I wrote down my tip amount, and the waitress brought back the bill with my card and told me that I was required to give her at least 15%.- The nerve! So, I took back my credit card and decided to pay the total bill plus tip in cash with the exact amount I felt comfortable paying because I was not going to be forced to pay for bad service. Not to mention, we had no idea the lingering effects we would have after eating here. To top it off, the food made us sick after we left. It is such a shame. I mean, it was bad, bloating, gas, upset stomach, nasaea, the whole nine. It truly was an awful feeling. We will not go here anymore. Hands down one of the most uncomfortable dining experiences I have had in a long time!

Yelp
Very mediocre soup dumplings at best. The skin is on the thicker side, but the worst crime is the soup itself which was very bland and tasted "watered down". The portions are great and on the cheaper end compared to other restaurants nearby. I did try the soup dumplings here a few years ago and it was not this bad. I'm not sure what happened.

Yelp
Service and cleanliness were alright but they were speedy and the food was delicious. I loved the sauce on the Shanghai Pan fried noodles and they were a very wonderful level of crispy and crunchy. The soup dumplings were hot and wonderful!

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place during the Chinese New Year parade celebration yesterday & it was such a happy accident! We were sat quickly & they brought out the food as it was ready. The Shanghai noodles were the 1st thing to come out & they were very delicious! The seafood dumplings were my favorite between that, the vegetable & the pork dumplings, although all were good. The scallion pancake was the best I've ever had! Fluffy & the oil tasted very fresh! I only took a photo of the noodles cause my friends & I were starving by the time we got there, but anyways I highly recommend! I give 5 stars for food & service, but the ambiance is no frills & the bathrooms are not in the greatest condition so that's why I didn't feel as though I could give 5 stars for the whole review. But I DO highly recommend going & having the delicious food!

Yelp
Food is back to pre Covid - excellent! We love this place but we can always get a seat. We love the bean curd with soybean and sponge gourd and pan fried boa.

Serina E.

Yelp
Reasonable price but minimum service due to only two servers. Lunch Special comes with hot & sour soup.

Jen S.

Yelp
The restaurant did not seem very clean, and the service was rude, impatient, and demanding. Other reviewers are correct that they want a high tip. Food was ok but not fantastic. We ordered orange chicken, stir-fry noodles, a pork dish, and hot and sour soup. I wasn't feeling well and only wanted soup, but the server was rude about me not ordering more. The hot & sour soup was the worst I've had. Bland and flavorless. Overall, it was a weird vibe and didn't feel comfortable dining there. I was relieved when we left, and wished we had gone elsewhere.

Li W.

Yelp
Really enjoyed having lunch here. We had: - Pork and Crab Xiao Long Bao - super good! If you haven't had them before, make sure to bite a bit of the bun off, drink the soup inside careful because it'll be hot and then eat the whole thing (with or without vinegar) - Shanghai Style Fried Rice Cake - Eggplant All were super delicious! Service was good too, and the restaurant has a lot of space for seating.

Jennie K.

Yelp
Love their lunch specials. I don't usually like to order general TSO chicken but this place makes it crunchy, saucy and a little spicy. If you don't want spicy you can request it too! Their portions are also big and filling. Love their fish rice dish and their shredded pork with cabbage on noodles soup.

Yelp
Had to get some soup dumplings and my bro and sis brought me here. The food was great, service was pretty quick, staff was friendly and helpful as best as they could be. The soup dumplings hit the spot. I wanted to get another order or two but was too full! Yummy walnut shrimp and bok choy as well! I would like to try more of their menu. Only issue was trying to find food options for my celiac wife. We knew it would be iffy of whether anything would be safe for her to eat, and it's fine when a place can't provide those options. It happens all the time. But the trouble here was that no one understood what gluten was, talking about wheat didn't help either, and we just had to assume the whole menu either had soy sauce or wheat thickeners or contamination. Again, we did anticipate this, but hoped the staff might understand or be able to communicate allergy info at least. It's all good though! We got her some food nearby afterwards.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Sunday and the food and service was horrible. I already have a low base for the service for Chinese restaurants and pretty much expect nothing but for them to take my order and give me food but they couldn't even do that. We sat down and waited maybe 25 mins asking 2 separate people if we could get a menu before we got one. And then had to wait forever to get someone to take our order and every step after required us flagging down multiple people. Every waiter just looked confused like they didn't know what they were doing. The food also was not good. We got the Xiao long bao (pork) and it was the last dish to arrive and at that point we were already done eating. The skin was super thick and it was not good. They also didn't give us the dipping vinegar and we had to chase somebody down for that as well. The scallion pancake was super super greasy and not flaky as well. Basically there's no reason to come here bc the food is bad and the service is somehow worse. It's a huge waste of time. Do not recommend.

Yelp
You know what's really hard? Cutting lo mein noodles for a two year old, using a soup dumpling spoon. I wouldn't do that, if I were you. What I would do, is: 1. Drag your offspring to meet up with some close friends you haven't seen since pre-pandemic times in the somewhat charming, somewhat ramshackle outdoor dining area Shanghai Heping has erected, and... 2. Order entirely too much food and beer. If you need suggestions on food: Get all the soup dumplings (at least two more orders than you think you need), all the noodles, the boneless crispy duck if you want to get weird with it, and the Spicy General Chicken (for some reason they don't want to give Tso his due). One of your friends may pretend not to want the latter because it's sweet and inauthentic, and if he really insists then don't let him have any of the deliciousness. It's the most popular dish in America for a reason.

AydenandDaddy H.

Yelp
One of the most authentic Shanghai dumplings outside of Shanghai. Very well made. The drunken chicken was very good too. Be careful they want 18% tip minimum there! Yikes It was a below average service

Esther T.

Yelp
I'd say 3.5 stars is fair. I was in the area, and wanted to grab some lunch. It's been a long while since I had some (non-Trader Joe's) soup dumplings. I didn't have a specific Shanghainese place in mind. I just searched for options nearby and this was the first one I came across while walking. They had both indoor and outdoor dining which was great. I ordered regular soup dumplings and Shanghai style stir fried rice cake. Soup dumplings were great. Rice cake was probably the best I've ever had. It's a dish that I like, but am not crazy about. I enjoyed it more than I ever had from here. Service was ok, maybe a bit awkward. Anyway, definitely recommend if you're craving some Shanghainese food in the area.

Wendy Y.

Yelp
Best Shanghainese/JiangZhe food in NYC! XiaoLongBao (pork soup dumpling) and pan fried bun are authentic and just as delicious as in Shanghai! A Must visit for our family whenever in NYC! Very affordable as well!

Brooke C.

Yelp
The soup dumplings were pretty good! But the spring rolls were disappointing! The service was quick but not friendly. The restaurant was in a good location but not very clean.

sarah m.

Yelp
Great lunch! For around $9 you get a decent dish with rice and soup. They serve tea too. I have to say the quality of this lunch dish at this price is way far exceed the expectation. I ordered a spicy sautéed chicken and the moment you put into your mouth you will realize it is fresh right out of the wok. The only thing I have to complain about is their wifi. There is no wifi available at this location. probably they don't know how to set it up properly.

Bin L.

Yelp
There are several Shanghai restaurants around Chinatown, but this one is cheaper than the other ones. When I entered, there were two parties dining, where one party consists of two young females possibility from high school enjoying their afternoon snack of pancakes and dumplings while the other consists of two middle-aged men. I ordered the vegan duck and cold jellyfish. Such items are usually served as appetizers when eating at a family gathering. The vegan duck consists of mushrooms wrapped in tofu skin while the cold jellyfish was lightly flavored. While waiting for the food, I saw that a server was making dumplings. Next to the enterance were two unopened boxes of HDTVs.

Debbie M.

Yelp
My mom's favorite Shanghainese restaurant. Food is always delicious and their prices are very reasonable. Service was quick and servers are always nice. The restaurant itself could use a facelift. I don't think it's been renovated since they first opened.

Sharon D.

Yelp
We waited a long time for our order to be taken in a not full restaurant. Feel we were overlooked often. Wait staff literally ignored us. Order was wrong--the appetizer was delivered after the meal was finished. Dumplings appetizer was tasteless. Required a mandatory 15% tip--but feel it was not deserved because of the service we received. Do not recommend.

S.A. V.

Yelp
Gave the restaurant several chances but, no go. There is no question that over the past year, the restaurant has deteriorated significantly. Food quality has lost the level of distinction this restaurant used to enjoy, and service quality, never high to begin with, has also faded further. If they don't turn things around soon, they may not survive.

karen t.

Yelp
Bought 3 lunch specials all comes with rice and hot n sour soup Took them 30 min during lunch hr. Who has .30 mi. During lunch? Drunken chicken-tasted bitter Preserved mustard with tofu skin-greasy and no taste Pork with dried tofu-nasty Hot n sour soup-look and tasted like left over from night before. Every dishes was pretty bad. I think this would be the worst Chinese I ever had. Wonder where they find their chef

Charles X.

Yelp
This place overall has decent food at super cheap prices; we tried the wonton soups, smashed cucumber salad, soup dumplings. By far, the real star of the show here is the pan fried pork buns. My coworkers and I were raving about the pan fried buns here because they are so exceptionally well made. The dough is very evidently handmade -- pillowy and slightly sweet, while the bottom is crispy. Inside is super juicy (careful not to burn your mouth!). Literally you have to come here just for the pan fried pork buns because they're so amazing. They have quite a large space for Chinatown too, which is always a nice plus and service was pleasant.

Chris E.

Yelp
OK Shanghainese food. There were definitely some hits and misses during our meal. My wife and I came here for an early Friday evening dinner at around 6pm and the restaurant was pretty empty. It was early after all, so there was nothing surprising about that. With the amount of space they have and the number of Shanghainese restaurants in the area, I'm doubtful that the restaurant gets really crowded. Plus, tourists tend to flock to the restaurants south of Canal Street instead of north. The menu was like your average Shanghainese restaurant menu - Shanghainese appetizers, cold dishes, seafood and meat entrees, rice cake entrees, vegetable dishes and noodles. And there were plenty of options in each category. Since everything is practically the same here as it is at most Shanghainese restaurants, we pretty much ordered what we normally order to compare it: SMOKED VEGETARIAN MOCK DUCK - One of our typical cold appetizers to kick start our Shanghainese meals. We weren't big fans of the way they made it here because it was too smoky. The top of the mock duck was burnt and the smokiness of it overwhelmed the flavor of the mock duck. On the plus side, the serving size was above average, but it might have been attributed to the fact that it was cut into smaller pieces, so it felt like the order was bigger than it is. KAU FU - The other typical cold dish we start with. Like the mock duck, we were disappointed in this. First, it was a bit on the warm side for a cold dish. Second, the Kau Fu was too dry, which resulted in a lack of flavor. CRISPY PAN FRIED NOODLE (SHANGHAI STYLE - shrimp, chicken, pork and vegetables) - I have to admit, this felt like a guilty pleasure because it was so "saucy", perfectly pan fried and 100% unhealthy .... but it was so damn good. To be honest, we ordered this by mistake, thinking that it was the thicker Shanghainese pan fried noodle, but nevertheless we were glad it was a case of mistaken identity. The noodles were extra crispy and just enough of the thick beef sauce covered the noodle so that it didn't collapse out of sogginess. There was plenty of the main ingredients as well, so it was very well balanced. Let's just say it was one of the best mistakes I had made in a long time. STEAMED SOUP DUMPLING WITH PORK & CRAB MEAT - There were 8 pieces in the order and it was good. My wife actually liked the soup dumplings here over many of the previous Shanghainese restaurants that we had been to lately, so they did something right. The skin was a bit thick, but there was plenty of soup in each dumpling and the pork was flavorful. It didn't hurt that they gave us a ton of vinegar, so I put all it good use. From a service perspective, everything came out very quick, which was a little concerning and pretty much verified to us that it was mostly prepped ahead of time. Even the pan fried noodle came out unusually quick, but it was still good. The only dish that took some time was the soup dumplings. Shanghai Heping was OK. It's as no-frills as it gets and pretty much your average Chinatown Shanghainese restaurant.

Alan S.

Yelp
Not very tasty - just one of the many subpar Shanghainese restaurants that have sprouted up to take advantage of the newfound craze for XLB. We started with veg steamed dumplings - the filling was fine, but the texture was a little doughy, perhaps from being steamed too long. The dough also had a strange slightly sweet flavor that I didn't love. The pan fried noodles were a very small portion and almost flavorless. Felt like a thrown-together dish without care. Probably a place best avoided.

Joy W.

Yelp
The service was quick and friendly. The place was very clean, very casual and family friendly. The portions were pretty big and very flavorful. My only complaint was that the scallion pancakes were a little under cooked but still delicious. My kids enjoyed it. We definitely will be back.

Beril E.

Yelp
While Joe's Shanghai and Shanghai 21 are both quoting you 40 minutes of wait, Shanghai Heping always has seats available. If you find yourself in Chinatown craving soup dumplings on a busy Saturday, this is your spot to get quickly seated. The soup dumplings with pork and crab and the scallion pancake were both standard affair. Don't get me wrong, both dishes tasted well. However, neither dish knocked it out of the park. Our third dish, the crispy fried noodles with shrimp had an uneven amount of sauce and fried noodle ratio, leaving our not so crispy noodles swimming in the sauce after just a few bites. The shrimp was overcooked and just tasted foul. The final dish, braised duck with scallion in brown sauce took an hour to make. Thankfully we shared each dish, so the timing wasn't much of a problem. I've got to say, the duck was tasty. We were glad someone came to cut the duck for us. Otherwise we would have been totally useless with the bones. The meat was tender and smooth. I would have preferred a heartier vegetable with the duck over the scallion, maybe bok choy, but the scallion was tasty regardless. The brown sauce was a little too overpowering, but I guess that's why it is included in the name of the dish. When the check arrived, they asked us to tell them our tip amount to charge our credit card with it, which we found to be weird. We informed them we would tip after our card is swiped. Later, the person who returned our credit cards waited in front of us while we tipped, which continued to make us feel uncomfortable. There was no reason to be treated with such a lack of trust. I hope they try to give customers space while tipping in the future.

Sandy D.

Yelp
Service is meh, food is meh. If it wasn't for the fact that my parties often choose this place, I would not go here to eat Shanghainese food. The waiters are hard to flag. Even when I'm literally waving my hands in the air, they are constantly busy. Funny, as they seem to be quick in giving us the bill when we aren't even done eating. The soup dumplings are not the best. It may be a personal preference that I dislike their thick skin, but their soup was also mediocre. The scallion pancake tasted great but came in small portions for the price. The main dishes are a hit or miss. I would not recommend this place out of all the other Shanghainese restaurants in Chinatown.

Hsin-Yi W.

Yelp
Our auntie is really picky with Shanghai food and Shanghai Heping Restaurant is one of her favorites. Their food was pretty decent especially spicy beef tendon and the portion with price was a good deal. However, the reason for only 3 stars was their service and cleanliness. The waiters there was really rude and sometimes it was not easy to understand what they said. Standard of cleanliness was bad as most of other restaurant in Chinatown.

Mark B.

Yelp
Four stars for the tasty soup dumplings (some of the best I've ever eaten), the helpful waitress (graciously accommodated substitutions in one dish), and the clean dining room. While the chicken with garlic and the shredded beef were fairly good dishes (could've been spicier), not on par with the fantastic dumplings.

Valentina Y.

Yelp
Their orange flavored chicken is incredibly good and very decent price. I recommend this place .

Maggie L.

Yelp
I should've trusted the Yelp reviews:( Many restaurants down after Covid-19 but this one still opens. Thus I decided to give it a shot despite of the 3 stars reviews on Yelp. I thought it wouldn't be too bad but my bad. I ordered the spicy beef tendon noodles soup. The soup is plain and the spicy beef tendon is very spicy but flavorless. Their vegetables and coriander are not fresh. Think before you go try!!!

Beverly T.

Yelp
The rating would have been better if the service was better! They seated us quickly then proceeded to ignore us. We finally got a waiter's attention and placed our order. The food came before the appetizer and we had to ask for it. No rice was served with our entree though other tables had rice. We couldn't get any ones attention to ask for the rice. the entrees were delicious, saute' chicken and brocolli and Spicy General Tso's chicken but the poor service tainted the experience. Find another place to eat!

Amy M.

Yelp
Great food every time I come to Chinatown I have to stop here for the chicken fried rice and sesame chicken also great Crab dumplings! See ya again soon!

Chimi C.

Yelp
Best BYOB/Karaoke/Chinese place in NYC. Easy. Got a birthday? Ahead on over. Bachelor party? They've got you covered. Bar mitzvah? Come on in. Stop playin with me

Betty Y.

Yelp
I apologize but I have to deduct stars for my latest visit. They messed up my order but that is not the reason for this updated review. I ordered the same exact thing as I always did but this time around, the hot and sour soup was super watery, completely different from the other times. The red bean pancake was...more than...unsatisfying. It is much tougher to chew and the way it breaks up in my mouth is like stale kettle cooked potato chips.

Tony Y.

Yelp
I've been coming here for a few years now with my family and I'd say this place is more of a solid 3.5 stars. To be quite honest, right next door is Shanghai Cafe, and they're definitely the better of the two. With Shanghai Cafe under renovations, Shanghai Heping is reaping the benefits. That said, we had dinner here tonight again and we have no complaints. I typically will tell you that the plain pork soup dumplings are better than the crab one, but in this case, the crab ones actually better. The seafood pot was quite good and so was the fried fish. The food is good, the service is average, but the price is very reasonable. And if you don't like waiting for a table, this is a great choice for your soup dumpling fix.

Grace Y.

Yelp
The food is decent, but the attitude of the staff here is absolutely appalling. I placed an order for pickup here a few days ago, and when I arrived I asked for an itemized receipt when paying. The lady at the counter said, "I know you didn't order the first item on this receipt; don't worry I won't give it to you, but I don't want to redo the order so just pay this total amount." I said, "Absolutely not, I am not paying for a $7 appetizer that I'm not getting and did not order," and she was upset that I had the gall to refuse. She then redid the total and when I whipped out my credit card to pay, she was like, "Do you not have cash?" I said that I had asked on a different visit and confirmed that the amount would be the same whether I was paying by cash or by card. She said, "Well it's not always the same; it depends on the day. If you're paying by card I'm going to have to charge tax." I then checked the receipt and asked her about the "tip" row - I had not agreed to pay a tip! She then said that the "tip" was actually the tax, but didn't she say that there would only be tax if I was paying by card?! Also, I pointed out that the tax rate was incorrect. She then gave me back a dollar in cash and told me to shut up about it. When the food finally came out, she THREW THE WHOLE BAG OF FOOD ONTO THE FLOOR and had me pick it up from the floor, like a beggar. Like what the actual fuck?

Teresa L.

Yelp
Was craving for some soup dumplings but Shanghai Cafe was closed temporarily due to renovation. Well, we were happy to come to Shanghai Heping right next door. We were seated right away and quickly placed the order as we were starving. Luckily food was served in a timely manner. Hot and sour soup: was tasty but looks like it's missing pork. Could be a vegetarian version. Crabmeat soup dumplings: we had two orders and each came with eight pieces. Skin was a bit thick but the meat was very flavorful. Shanghai e-fu noodles: very tasty and not greasy. Place is spacious. Glad there is a Shanghai place with decent food in Chinatown where you don't have to wait for a long time. Will definitely come back again.

Sherry W.

Yelp
I usually go to Shanghai Cafe but we decided to try here for dinner after the Pink Nation pop up. It was such a cold day (snow and wind chill). Came here with friend and hubby. We ordered: 2 orders of soup dumplings- 1 regular pork & 1 pork with crab. Shanghai noodle soup (pork, chicken, shrimp) 2 orders of braised beef stew chow fun noodle soup (1 spicy and 1 regular). Space is big!!!- special parties down on lower floor that has karaoke available. Menu is vast but mostly family style by their prices. Which was why we only ordered the noodle soup as our individual entrees. I wish there were more choices for individual entrees (rice plate section). My spicy braised beef tendon chow fun noodle soup was not spicy. It look the same as my friend who order it non-spicy. You can only see a few red chili oil inside the soup. Soup was bland. Out of all the noodle soups, my hubby's Shanghai noodle has the most stuff and smelled better.

Yelp
I don't expect 5 star service but the service & attitude here was appalling. The lady was rude when taking our order, I just asked for a glass of water and she brushed me off. When we ordered the soup dumplings she had this attitude like are you stupid and rolled her eyes when we asked a simple question. When we asked for the check they asked us to write our tip before swiping the card...weird. She stood over us while we wrote our tip which was very uncomfortable. Never coming back here, it wasn't just one lady all three ladies had really bad attitudes. I was just baffled in the end that I couldn't help but laugh never in my 20+ years of living in Chinatown have I encountered something like this.

Yelp
Came into this restaurant to grab lunch since our usual spot next door was closed. We saw they had a lunch special so sure why not? Seating was pretty quick despite the packed place. Fairly long/large restaurant. We ordered fast and food came out at a good pace. If you order from the lunch specials, you'll get a soup (not one of your choice). Ours was hot and sour soup. Pork soup dumplings - must order at any Shanghainese restaurant. Comes in 8 for $5.95. Not bad, had better but this is a good option if you're craving soup dumplings. I like the skin to be a tad bit thinner and soup was just alright. Curry chicken lunch special - hubby realized after ordering this that it was a Shanghai restaurant but nonetheless, we figured we would try it. I wouldn't go for it if you want real curry. It's sliced chicken and veggies in a bland curry sauce. Something I can make at home...definitely not the curry I was looking for. Stir fry vegetables with meat - this was a good dish. Plenty to share, lots of variety, meat includes chicken and beef. Simple and easy, can't go wrong with that. If we come back, we would certainly order more Shanghainese centric meals. Decent place and quick spot for a meal if you need to jet.

Yelp
Came here for their lunch special. I ordered the black mushroom with silken tofu. It comes with a small cup of hot and sour soup. The dish was delish... although it didn't habe much mushroom in it at all. The sauce and seasoning were on point. Although the soup came in a small cup, it was loaded and filling. The service was efficient

Yelp
This place used to be pretty good. In my opinion, it was the best soup dumpling place in chinatown. But not any more. Food was horrible. Soup dumplings. The skin was a bit hard and too thick. The soup inside had a weird taste to it. I've tried a lot of Shanghai restaurants so I have other examples of soup dumplings to compare it to. These soup dumplings were way below average. Beef lo mein. This was ok but not great. Pan fried pork buns. The bottoms of the buns were burnt hard. Some people may like it that way but I don't. I ate around the burnt part, and the meat and bun flavor and texture was just lackluster. Maybe I just ordered the wrong dishes, but I'm not coming back there to find out. I base every shanghai restaurant on the quality of their soup dumplings and this place didn't pass.

Yelp
I was brought here by a good friend and was scolded when I tried to look at the reviews on Yelp! We came and were seated promptly. We ordered two orders of dumplings to start out, one of the pork fried and another of the soup dumplings. They were phenomenal! Great dumplings for a great price. I then ordered the spicy chili vegetable sautée, bf ordered the spicy beef pho as did our friend, and our other friend simply ordered the steamed pork dumplings as his entree. Everything was great, only complaint was that rice was extra? That was very confusing to me as customarily, rice is included with the dish, however we were charged for it. The steamed pork dumplings were better than the fried, which was slightly surprising to me, but both were phenomenal. Next time, I will stick to ordering the dumplings as an appetizer. The soup dumplings were delicious and filling! Definitely recommend trying this place at least once!

Yelp
Dong Po Pork and their soup dumplings are the reason I am still living.

Yelp
There are an innumerable amount of soup dumpling places in Chinatown it seems nearly impossible to pick! Stumbled upon this gem on a blog. The service is nothing to write home about - typical disgruntled Chinese employees but amazing food at least that comes at a great price. I can't say that I didn't spill the dumpling juice on myself because I did! If you're not careful it can pop and get all over you. Definitely do it gently and take your time they come out piping hot!
