High-end Chinese dining amid swanky '30s-era decor & on a terrace with views in the Peninsula Hotel.
"Located in the luxurious Peninsula Hotel, Shanghai Terrace has an outdoor patio with views of the Chicago skyline, offering a lush urban garden in the middle of the city. The 1930s Shanghai-inspired indoor dining room isn’t too shabby, either with hues of ebony, gold, and scarlet. The menu, meanwhile, is filled with food from all over China, but with a focus on Shanghainese, Cantonese, and Sichuan classics." - Lisa Shames, Samantha Nelson
"It’s no surprise that Shanghai Terrace is luxurious—it's inside the Peninsula Hotel along the Mag Mile. Chopsticks rest on golden holders shaped like boats, and each meal begins with warm “ST" monogrammed towels. But it’s the elevated Chinese food that completes the experience. At $21, the four pieces of lobster, chicken, and truffle dumplings are definitely “Just Got A Promotion” dumplings, but the umami from the truffle combined with the sweetness from the lobster is delicious. The peking duck is also fantastic—with glistening crispy skin and a spread of julienned cucumber, radish, hoisin, and sweet and sour sauce. We especially like eating here in the warmer months when we can make chun bing duck wraps on their secluded, namesake terrace." - John Ringor
"Proper tea is difficult to find, but Shanghai Terrace, up in the Peninsula Hotel, takes the beverage seriously. Some diners love to hate on the fact that an upscale Chinese restaurant with prices more than their neighborhood delivery joint exists. Don’t let that deter you: Shanghai Terrace with its ambience and attention to detail is worth every penny. Their selection of seafood dim sum — and the Beijing duck service — make this spot worth a visit for a special occasion." - Ashok Selvam, Eater Staff
"Located inside of the posh Peninsula Hotel on the Magnificent Mile, it’s not surprising that Shanghai Terrace is luxurious. Chopsticks rest on ornate, golden holders shaped like boats, and the excellent service begins with warm "ST" monogrammed towels. These touches are great, but it’s the elevated Chinese food that completes the experience—specifically the lobster, chicken, and truffle dumplings. And at $21 for four, these definitely fall under the category of “Just Got A Promotion” dumplings. The meat and seafood filling is rich and savory, with just enough umami from the truffle, all held securely together by a thick-yet-delicate wrapper. " - john ringor
"Considering it’s inside the Mag Mile’s Peninsula Hotel, it makes sense that Shanghai Terrace feels luxurious. There are golden chopstick holders shaped like boats, and each meal starts with warm “ST" monogrammed towels. The Chinese food follows suit. At $21, the four pieces of lobster, chicken, and truffle dumplings can feel like “Just Got A Bonus” dumplings, but the umami from the truffle combined with the sweetness from the lobster is incredible. The Peking duck has glistening crispy skin and sides of julienned vegetables, hoisin, and sweet and sour sauce. Check out Shanghai Terrace when it’s warm and make chun bing duck wraps on their secluded, namesake terrace." - john ringor, adrian kane
