Shikku Review - South Street Seaport - New York - The Infatuation

"Skikku is your best option if you want a relaxing break from all the people-dodging you’ll be doing at the Tin Building. You’ll get a cold lemongrass-scented towel as soon as you sit down, which sets the tone for the calming experience you’re about to have. The only seats are at an expansive square counter where you can order one of several varieties of sake. All the nigiri and maki are made with high-quality fish, and some of the rolls have interesting components, like the sansho and serrano peppers that come on top of the yellowtail one." - Kenny Yang

The Tin Building Has Everything (Except a Purpose)

"A sushi-and-sake bar with a sleek, hotel-lobby–like atmosphere: a black-marble-and-pine bar, meticulous place settings, decorative sake bottles, and soft mall-ish music. The service presents delicate pieces such as nodoguro alongside slightly overchilled shrimp; the food is refined but the mood at off-peak lunch can feel eerily polished and frictionless, more like a luxury hotel lounge than a bustling Tokyo sushi den." - Adam Platt, Janice Chung

This place specializes in hand rolls and unfortunately none of them were to my liking. They are very herb-forward in their flavor combos. I got the set of five hand rolls. If I had to choose a favorite it would be the salmon (ate too quickly and didn't get a photo- classic). Although I didn't like the hand rolls the service was great and it was a nice casual spot. I'd recommend workshopping the hand roll flavors a bit more.

This place is absolutely amazing!!!! From our incredible waiter, René, to the chefs, food, ambiance… this place is the best Omakase experience I’ve been to in NYC yet! The food is spectacular on its own, and the quality and portion sizes are well worth the price. I highly recommend visiting at least once, and you must have the Miso soup - it is the most umami-filled situation I’ve ever experienced! 5 stars to this impeccable establishment, and a huge thank you for an unforgettable date night!

This sushi spot is tucked away in Tin Building, but it's still close enough to the hustle and bustle of the market to feel lively. There are no tables, only a sushi bar, which is the best way to enjoy the fresh seafood. We visited for lunch on a Saturday, when the rest of New York City seemed to be enjoying brunch. We were one of only a few people there, which made for a quiet and intimate dining experience. We splurged on drinks, starting with a glass of Louis Roederer champagne. For appetizers, we had edamame with a nice spice and shrimp cakes that were delicious when dipped in soy sauce. For rolls, we ordered yellowtail, spicy tuna, salmon avocado, and the dragon. It was hard to pick a favorite, but I would say the dragon and salmon avocado were tied for first place. Everything was super fresh and the service was excellent. Lunch was a bit pricey, but I blame that on the drinks.

Ahh!! Forgot to ask the Japanese chef’s name, but Mr. Chef from Yokohama (near Tokyo) took a 12 course omakase order of mine. I have to say… the presentation and the flavor/taste of the food was amazing! The ambience of this sushi bar is modern and chic! I think they have about 20+ seats inside. I had a cherry yuzu drink, it’s a bottled sparking soda, it’s a local drink from Brooklyn and i liked its tartness flavor yet sweetness! Drinks were served in cute glasses, and the service was a 5 star 🥹♥️♥️ I’d definitely comeback! Oh and the omakase was so filling! Yet miso soup with avocado in it was definitely a unique and a new experience to me…!

I am hoping this was an off night or something as most of our other Tin Building experiences have been pretty good. Two of our party had been here several times before and thought it was good too. We ordered two appetizers, two Sushi sets, and Sashimi sets. The waiter made it clear each of the six items of each were a single piece. When it arrived, the sashimi was three types of fish with two pieces of each. The chef’s fish choices were salmon, raggedly cut, falling apart Hamachi, and slices of tuna that were still frozen in the middle. The restaurant was not busy with many open seats, and one chef was not doing much. Yet we waited nearly 40 minutes between appetizers and and our main courses. The other members of our party had to wait even long er as they served us our sashimi and only then started to make sushi for the other two. We were done with sashimi before the sushi was served. Our server asked about allergies several times at the beginning of the meal and we told them one of our party was allergic to shellfish. They served him shrimp anyways. When we said that was a no go they took it back, the chef took off the shrimp in front of us and offered the same plate back. To their credit, when we asked for help, Shane, the manager, was very kind in listening to our issues and did an excellent job in helping ameliorate the situation. I would add the chawanmushi, with uni as the seasonal topping, was very good and got is off on the right start. It was sad that it devolved from there.

I love the ambiance. There is limited seating so there may be a wait later in the day and on weekends. The food was okay, however for the price I would have liked for it to be MUCH better. I do love the fact that avocado is included in the miso soup. The waitress was also very lovely and the service was quick!

Love this place. They really pay attention to detail. The sushi is expensive but you definitely get the quality you paid for. Flavor is amazing, incredibly fresh, and a good selection of things many places dont have on the menu (nodoguro was amazing). The appetizers are varied and tasty as well. I mentioned in passing it had been my birthday the day before and they brought me a complimentary slice of matcha lemon cake at the end of the meal, which was also delicious and appreciated. Will be back!

Really cute restaurant and everything is fresh. They make everything in-front of you. We had a miso soup, dragon and salmon avocado roll. Really good and the price was not too high. We paid around $45

Yelp
If you love hand rolls, i'd highly recommend! These were fresh and flavorful! I'd recommend ordering one of their sauces.. all are yummy! Our party of 3 was seated immediately on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. (I could see this place having a wait since seating is rather limited) The restaurant had a very simple layout with three sides of the open sushi counter available for seating. Very yummy, would recommend if you're looking for something refreshing and light among the many options inside the Tin Building!

Yelp
When visiting New York there are things you expect, after all this is the home to Spiderman, The Avengers, Dare Devil and some great Jazz. But the food, is always part of the draw of the big apple, specificaly bagels, pizza, and a host of other dinning options. So yes I'm out here deep in these cuisine streets today!! I had to visit the seaport area today for work, Pier 17 specifically and Shikku located inside the Tin building was an absolute delight. If you are a sushi fan, this is a spot that should be on your list. My server Pamela was solid, the service was great. However the sushi was the star of the show! Let's start with the miso soup... Wow, the mushrooms and avocados along with everything else added to it brought it to life in a way I absolutely can say, I've never had before. It was delicious! I ordered the Salmon Avocado and the Ell Roll and both were beautifully presented. Now as I was ordering Pamela mentioned that the salmon in their rolls, is King Salmon and if you are not a normal consumer of salmon, you may not understand that subtle difference. Let me tell you my taste buds knew immediately. These two rolls were married with their flavors perfectly but the degree of taste and freshness of the seafood used to prepare the rolls was amazingly the game changer. Your tummy and taste buds will not be disappointed. The only down side to this location is only counter seating is available. Well as least as I could see. In the end Oleta Adams that bitch, "I don't care how you get there, get here if you can" for those of you that don't know who that is Google it, that's another morsel of sage advice for yo ass!

Yelp
Really great sushi spot nestled within Tin Building. You're just close enough to see everything going on, but just far enough to get some quiet and enjoy your meal. We came here for lunch on a Saturday, presumably while the rest of NYC was enjoying brunch, because there were only a few other people here. No tables - just sushi bar, and that's the best way to do it. We went for it on drinks, I opted for a glass (which ended up being two) of the Louis Roederer champagne, and my dad went for the French Pinot. Both clocked in at nearly $40 a glass, but paired so well with the food we got. Speaking of, we started with edamame (nice spice) and the shrimp cakes (delicious, with extra flavor when dipped in soy. We also got 4 rolls - yellowtail, spicy tuna, salmon avocado, and the dragon. Honestly, hard to pick a favorite...but I am torn between the dragon and salmon avocado. Everything was super fresh, service was excellent, and although lunch ended up bring pretty pricey...I blame it on the drinks.

Yelp
Service was great. Ambiance was beautiful. The food was very good but not totally amazing. I was happy with the food but I would look for other places as well. The presentation of the food was outstanding

Yelp
We tried the Omakase 12 course and it was outstanding from date to finish. The staff was super friendly and attentive. We loved interacting with the chef, we were mesmerized by his attention to detail. We loved it. Thank you, Chef.

Yelp
Loved the intimate atmosphere, bar seating, and quick service. We ordered cocktails (specialty old fashioned and cherry spritz), appetizers (gem salad and edamame), and finished it off with 3 sushi rolls (spicy tuna, salmon avocado), peaky crab. We really enjoyed the food and our waiter Peter was attentive and helpful with recommendations. This is a great spot and we will definitely come back!

Yelp
Sos the omakase. It was pretty underwhelming except for a few pieces here and there. They messed up the first course and weren't able to serve what they intended so they substituted it with something else. Some pieces were fresh others were mediocre. Not sure it's worth the price given the prices that were served. The service however was top notch. The place is indeed very small and reservations are mandatory. Even on a hot Wednesday night after work.

Yelp
Though the place is clean, the sushi selection is awfully lame. I've had much better in places you don't even expect to find good sushi, such as AZ or TX. Price was reasonable but I'd rather pay three times as much for better quality sushi. I wouldn't waste my time as there are many of other options, especially in NYC.

Yelp
The six-piece flight is on another level. We also tried the black cod (cooked) and it melts in your mouth. The service is wonderful as well :)

Yelp
Came in with the wife and kids hoping for an atmosphere where the baby could finally sleep in the BIG APPLE . MY OH MY GOLLY GEE DID I HIT THE JACKPOT! Walked in and saw a more open restaurant market type atmosphere and was overwhelmed with worry for little Jeremiah crying all night. After a tumultuous journey to locate the restaurant (first floor, middle, and back) I was so shocked and surprised to find a restaurant in NYC that was quiet, secluded, and not too outrageously priced! I felt comforted and cozy encased in the low lit black walls of the single room restaurant. Not to mention the sushi chefs were directly in front of you no matter where you sat! Little Jeremiah was giddy with joy and fell DEAD asleep! As far as the food goes I would highly recommend the spicy tuna! Yum yum in my tum tum! As far as the wait staff goes you are closely kept care of. They even plugged my phone in! It is an excellent establishment! Better yet you can do some ORGANIC and LOCAL shopping when you're done eating! CHECK IT OUT! XOXO B
