The Best New Bars In LA

"Located in the old Genever space in Historic Filipinotown, Shim Sham is a casual neighborhood bar that makes being a casual neighborhood bar look easy. There’s a big horseshoe-shaped bar ideal for striking up conversations with strangers, a few TVs playing sports, and a drink list where everything from frozen cocktails to boilermaker combos are $13 or under. The extra dirty Mayatini and The Condor, their take on a margarita with a Tajin-covered rim, are both destination cocktails. As in, we’ll happily leave our own neighborhoods to drink them. Keep an eye on their Instagram, too. There’s always a cool pop-up happening on the sidewalk in the event you get hungry. " - brant cox, sylvio martins, garrett snyder

A Former Award-Winning Cocktail Bar Settles Into a Relaxed Watering Hole in Historic Filipinotown - Eater LA

"Shim Sham, Historic Filipinotown’s new neighborhood bar, opened Tuesday night in the former Genever space. It’s a full transformation of the former Art Deco cocktail bar wedged between Koreatown, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Westlake, and Rampart. Shim Sham is now a casual neighborhood hangout by the L&E Oyster Bar and El Condor crew Dustin Lancaster and Tyler Bell." - Mona Holmes

One of my favorite bars around here. It’s intimate but doesn’t usually get too cramped. Very cozy vibes, almost like being at a friends house. I like how the bar is set up in a horseshoe shape, it kinda feels like sitting at a big table with a bunch of strangers. There are a few comfy little seating areas if you don’t want to sit at the bar. My friends and I love coming on Monday for movie night (free popcorn!) Plus they have a sweet photo booth just past the restrooms :)

Google
Im a local and I like this bar because it’s close and I enjoy the lighting/decor. But the bartenders are never friendly. For the most part I don’t expect much. But every time me and my friend come we get this type of annoyed/rude vibe from them. I’ve brushed it off as them having a bad night. However, I’ve begun to notice that they smile and have small talk with the other lighter colored customers.

We went for some drinks, the place is super cozy and fun at the same time, it was a little loud at first but then we found a special private place with our own dimmer for the Christmas lights, and we could talk, laugh and have a spectacular time!!! Service was cool and cocktails were just perfect. Many thanks !

Update: I have started to frequent this bar more and more from my initial review and I have started to see a change in environment, my review before was positive and overall favorable because I was a local who came to what was here before, but now after a year, I can say there is a sense of favoritism, I won't get into detail but I have witnessed and experience some uncomfortable situations that made me realize I wasn't always welcome, and that I had to make myself present and noticable only to order a drink. I have frequented this place and the only take back is that you will not always feel welcomed. The environment depends on how you present yourself and who is bartending, tonight was great and the male staff is definitely more friendly then the woman staff.

Google
What a great new bar to the LA scene! It's a lively place that can definitely get crowded but with the great bartenders, you still get a drink promptly! Will definitely have this in my rotation of places to go have a good time... shout out to Paige for being an awesome host and slinger of booze!

And friend and I decided to go and pregame at this bar this past weekend. I was sooooooo excited to come here since I am newer to the neighborhood. Security was sooo nice and had an inviting attitude. We walk in and it was very packed. It’s a Saturday night and was expected because of such. The decor was so nice. There were a lot of people hanging out at the bar. There was one guy just lingering at the bar babysitting a drink who turn around and saw me and took up the extra space so I could not order. I asked him to move so I could order and he became very passively aggressive with me sliding his empty cup towards me. The waitresses seemed to be very impatient as we asked her what was her favorite drink and bar favorites. She was not receptive nor did she have a can do attitude. We finally decided on the iced drinks. They were below mid. I understand the hype because it’s a bar but I don’t get it. I tried to give this place a chance and wanted to like it but like the reviews from all of the other people of color, everything seems to be true.

Google
fun and affordable drink menu, nice interiors, friendly staff. shim sham would benefit from hiring more local bartenders, or curating more diverse/ inclusive nights, since the clientele doesn’t really reflect the surrounding neighborhood. maybe it’ll take some time, I’m hopeful!

Love this spot! The bartenders are fantastic and the ambience is amazing. My new favorite bar in LA, and it’s not too expensive. I will definitely be back

Yelp
4++ Cozy bar that feels a little divey in the best way possible. Located in Historic Filipino Town. This is the type of spot that I would've hung out at multiple times a week in my younger days lol. The cocktails were well-made and the price point was super reasonable We came here on a Sunday night, so the vibe was pretty chill and the service was relaxed. It wasn't super crowded so it was easy to order drinks. There's a fun photo booth where they project the pictures on the screen for people to see. There's also a DJ in the corner that plays some fun music and matches the vibe. Definitely a great place to grab a drink and hang out or even as a first destination before dinner or even after.

Yelp
In today's adventure to the LA, pre dinner cocktails brought my party to Shim Sham. A lowkey watering hole with great ambiance and an impressive menu of libations! Cheers!

Yelp
You could easily miss this place if you weren't looking for it. The sign is quite small, but once you're inside, it's so welcoming. I was there on a Saturday for a friend's birthday and the place was packed. But the bar staff was very congenial and the drinks were strong and came quickly. I like that they let patrons bring in their own food or have pizza delivered. Once they turned off the football game, the music was great too. Good vibes. Good place.

Yelp
I'm puzzled by the one-star reviews, but I have to give Shim Sham a solid five stars. The interior design is thoughtfully crafted and very stylish. The bartenders may be busy, but if you're patient, they'll definitely attend to you--they're genuinely friendly. The beer prices are reasonable, with Miller High Life at $5, and the cocktails are fantastic. The weekend vibe had great music, and I can't wait to return time and time again!

Yelp
What a beautiful space, great cocktails with an expert L.A. bar team. Pre-inflation prices.

Yelp
Guys, I guess I should be leaving 5 stars for the Hollywood cult vibe you can find here . But I'm not down like that . If you are , come here. You'll get the no soul behind your eyes stare here for sure ! There was a DJ who was friendly but it almost seemed like they were there to play for about 5 people who were seating next to them . The bartender was mediocre at best when it comes to customer service, you're almost bothering him with your order. You're lucky his friends have a full one or else, you can go f' yourself ! I was super excited to visit this place as I moved from Ktown to Silverlake area and oh' man, oh' man, this bar was by far some of the worse bars I ever been to. Sorry to burst your bubble but y'all gotta break up the cult happening here if you want locals and normal people to stop by .

Yelp
It's a such a nice, cozy and sweet bar in the neighborhood. The bartenders are friendly & make you feel at home. Very cool vibe where you can actually have a conversation with someone & easily hear each other, whilst good jams playing in the background. It's a must visit, go & get yourself a drink!

Yelp
Found this gem on Yelp while looking for a new bar. I was very happy I found it. The bar has cool vibe with a lot of locals present. We went on Wednesday so I guess it was "Western Night". The front door person told us that on Thursdays they host karaoke night. The crowd was diverse and the drinks were good. The staff was nice and very help. This is definitely my new local bar.

Yelp
The first stop on a recent date night with my partners. We were there early. Our bartender was incredibly friendly and we wound up befriending the only other patron in the bar. We were surprised that the Paloma was not frozen, as it was listed on the menu. Paige's Punch was delicious which was surprising because I usually dislike Campari. I didn't really care for my drink - The Condor - so I would go for something else next time.

Yelp
I went to this bar for the first time 2 Saturdays ago and I really liked it the bartender was very nice she recognized me from another restaurant she works at which is cool. I had a pretty good time, so a week and a half later my boss at work asks if I'd like to do happy hour and if I could suggest something. Remembering that I had a good time and that I am tired of his usual bbw run. I told him about Shim Sham. We arrived. Everything was good until the end of the night when I closed out my tab...I first requested my tab signed, tipped and went back to my seat (I assumed it was one of those places where they swipe your card at the beginning of the night and then just close you out). As we were leaving, I noticed that I didn't have my card with me. So, I went back to the bar and I told the girl that I didn't get my card and she came back with another charge. This is weird because I had already closed out my tab, so there should be no further charges. Anyway, I look through my credit card app and see that there is no other charge except for this last charge, so I sign thinking nothing of it. Yesterday, I went on to my app to check my weekly usage, and there is more than one charge, so I called the bar. There was no answer. I called a few times, but there no answer. What type of practices are these? Way to ruin a good experience. Everyone, please be aware so that you don't fall victim to theft like I did at this place.

Yelp
My friend and I were in the mood to try a new spot, so we decided to come here. The venue has fun decor and comfy seating. They have a few couches in addition to bar seating and high rise tables. There's not a ton of seats so I'd be cautious if you're coming in a large group where everyone wants to sit. My friend and I each ordered a drink. I ordered the margarita which was delicious and strong. My friend ordered pimms punch and while it was tasty, the drink was on the weaker side. Overall, the drinks were pretty inconsistent. That said, the ambiance was pretty nice and a ton of people were on a first date. I probably won't go back but I can see this place being a good night cap spot.

Yelp
This bar RIPS. Very affordable neighborhood bar! The bartenders I've encountered here really know their stuff. Zack is super knowledgeable and friendly! He and Paige are like the dream team for a Friday night (which is usually when I go) there is usually a DJ and the music is always on point. 10/10 would recommend this place!!

Yelp
Great little bar. I love that they have a shim's cup (pim's cup) makes me feel like i'm back at Wimbledon. Best pickle backs around!

Natalia V.

Yelp
Hmmm... bartender tonight was cool. The place itself was nice and the restrooms were clean. Beers good. I wasn't sure about the pretentious crowd. Maybe I'll be back on a different night.

Robert R.

Yelp
Transplant haven. I never feel welcome coming to this bar...which is funny because it's relatively new to this neighborhood. I'm curious how it would feel coming here if the people working reflected the diversity of Rampart Village/HiFi.

Dr S.

Yelp
Great little hidden gem! Off the beaten path, great music and the staff, French kiss, she really had a can do attitude! Will come here again!!

Cupcake Q.

Yelp
Love this bar! Such a cute spot for a date or just hanging with pals. Paige is so wonderful and always a pleasure to see her. Definitely swing by!

Colin M.

Yelp
Sunday night bartender was extremely rude. For no reason. I don't know her name. Sunday 2/25. She threatened to not serve me and my friends because one of us was indecisive about what they wanted. She was condescending about my order when my friend said "I'll have whatever he's having". There's only 10 people in the bar right now and my party is five of them. Also, we've only had one round before this interaction. This place blows

Rachel D.

Yelp
This is the spot the neighborhood needed. Great cozy divey vibe. Rad bartenders, Kenna is a walking angel!! She plays bomb music and makes fantastic cocktails!! (Not to mention she's a mega babe) karaoke on Tuesdays, western Wednesdays, happy hour everyday. Love this spot!

Diego M.

Yelp
Fans of extremely loud music are in for a treat. Alcoholics also, tons of beer and bottles of alcohol too.

Riley K.

Yelp
Fantastic vibes and cheap drinks, friendly conversational staff, and Taco Bell nearby 10/10

Yelp
Cute spot, Service is great bartender was very friendly and make a few recommendations.
