The Best Restaurants In Bed-Stuy - New York - The Infatuation

"At this beloved neighborhood seafood market, you can order some fried shrimp to eat for lunch, or pick up some raw shrimp to cook for dinner. It’s one of our favorite places to stop by for fried fish, lobster rolls, and po’boys, as well as freshly shucked oysters and clams. They have a couple counter seats inside, but when the weather’s good, you’ll see a steady crowd of people eating at the picnic tables out front. Whatever you get, order a side of their Old Bay-dusted fries." - will hartman, bryan kim, willa moore, neha talreja

Shipwreck Seafood Boutique - Review - Bedford-Stuyvesant - New York - The Infatuation

"This seafood market on the corner of Bedford and Greene is one of our favorite places to stop by for a quick solo meal, especially in the summer. It’s a beloved neighborhood staple for its reasonably priced raw fish (including sushi grade tuna and raw shellfish) as well as the fried fish, lobster rolls, and po’boys from the back kitchen. There are only a couple bar seats inside, but when the weather’s good, you’ll see a steady crowd of people eating at the picnic tables out front. Whatever you get—we usually go for fried shrimp and lobster rolls—get a side of their Old Bay-dusted fries. They also have a tiny takeout operation on Throop called the Wreck with a handful of tables and stools outside." - Neha Talreja

Google
The food here was amazing. I had the soft-shell crab sandwich and some fried shrimp. The portions were satisfying. This spot is small but so cozy!! I loved that open windows which gives that outdoor feel without being directly in the sun. You can purchase fresh fish or directly from the hot food menu. I will definitely come here again.

Joey is the man! As a private chef in the city, he has the best seafood and the best customer service. Always a smile on his face. His seafood is always fresh and at great prices. His knowledge about where he gets his seafood always amazes me. If you aren’t getting your seafood from here then are you really eating right?!?! I THINK NOT. Go get yourself a sandwich or some raw fish, NOW.

Finally stopped in and wasn't disappointed. I had the fried catfish sandwich with fries and shrimp. The food was fresh, cooked well and tasty. Orange sauce (don't know what it was) was a nice compliment to the food 😋 It didn't smell fishy at all and the shop was very clean. Good music played while we waited and the guy at the register was nice. Very personable. I would definitely go back

Google
Amazing lobster roll with fries and grouper sandwich. Not a great pic but it was amazing. I'll back. Homemade tartar sauce 🤤

Google
I had given up on finding a decent piece of non farmed fish until I found Shipwreck. I bought three pieces of salmon and the people from Seattle and Alaska (who both fancy themselves salmon experts, and they aren’t not wrong), said it was the best piece of fish they’d had in the city too! Support the small business, the fisherman (vs the farmers), and get FAR better product than you’d get at Whole Foods.

Google
It's one of my favorite spots. My dad used to love coming here when he was alive to have a corona with his fried fish and today we did it for him. The food is always great and so is the staff. ❤️

Google
I can’t stress this enough…if you live around the area, going into shipwreck should be a staple for you. The energy that Joey and his team brings to the community is electric. They do breakfast! They got you for top notch seafood for you to cook at home! And they got all the good stuff they make in house (soft shell crab occasionally, shrimp po boys) they even have shrimp cocktail TO GOOO, like c’mon. I stop in just to listen to the music and see all the beautiful people who gravitate to this spot also. Shipwreck gives something unique, go give some love back. You won’t regret it. Cheers! @joelholland_studio with the sketch of the old location of Shipwreck

Google
Calling these "Maryland Crab Cakes" is nothing short of a disgrace. Maryland crab cakes are MINIMAL filling and minimal nonsense. These are vegetable bread balls with some rubbery crab speckled in there. You need to do yourselves a favor and try a real Maryland crab cake and do your customers a favor and rename these to Veggie Bread Balls with optional crab until you come to the light.

Yelp
10/10 food and service. You can taste the freshness with every bite. I had the Red Snapper sandwich which I highly recommend! It had a great mouthful of fish. I also had the oysters and oh my goodness, they were delicious like a five star restaurant. Oh and the fries are soooo good. Perfectly cut and seasoned. Yummm The ambience was welcoming, cool, clean, and bright. It's not a full restaurant but it does have a few tables and sitting areas to eat and chill. We didn't finish eating and were already planning to return the next day. This place definitely left an impression on us and it's added to the list of places to frequent! #foodieforlife

Yelp
I'm annoyed cause their $20 fish sandwich doesn't come with fries. Like what. Ok I ate it. It was good. Red Snapper sandwich. Bread was nice and soft. It's my fault for ordering delivery cause it was soggy AF. But you would think they had a way to make it not soggy. Separate the patties and the break maybe? There were two pieces of fish. It was pretty good but not sure I'd order again from here.

Yelp
I came of age in the neighborhood where this place is located. That, along with good social media pictures and reviews- is why I was eager to check it out. I love the friendly vibe of the place and the layout of fresh seafood to choose from. Also, my order was prepared quickly. While I was there, a customer came in raving about the softshell crab sandwich, so I got that. I also ordered a fried whiting sandwich for my mother. Both our orders were way too salty. While I ate mine, my mom couldn't enjoy hers. Since that was my first time having softshell crab, I'm going to try it again somewhere else to compare. Prices are kind of high for what you get, but - that describes a lot of restaurants now!

Yelp
Such a neighborhood gem!! Shipwreck has a large variety of raw seafood as well as a menu of items they cook in house. The seafood is so fresh and very affordable. They even have raw oysters and sushi grade tuna! The sandwiches and other fried items are a can't miss either. The fish is fried per order and the batter is so crispy and flavorful. I love the addition of Old Bay fries. They are so addicting! The owner is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about seafood. He can help you pick the best type of seafood for your needs.

Yelp
Just everything about Shipwreck Gourmet Fish Boutique is EVERYTHANG! It took me forever to get here... I could have ordered via a food app, but I wanted the experience... even when I was having oyster meltdowns, I suffered through them, and now I am happily here! So Joey and his sister are ALL THAT with their passion, vibe and customer service! The boutique is smaller than I imagined, but it is a good size and not cramped. The little fish/nautical themed touches add the cuteness of the space. There is absolutely no fishy smell inside or out. Lastly, my oyster sandwich is very fresh, tasty, and the breading is light and crispy. The brioche roll is soft and fluffy. The seasoning on the oysters and the fries is just right. So, I will become a regular (whether it's to eat in, delivery, or buying fresh to prepare at home).

Yelp
Being West Coasters, we have to have lobster when we come East. We got two lobster rolls here and they were good but not great. Mostly enjoyed talking to Joey, the owner. He grew up in Bed-Stuy and experienced it back in the day. He has several seafood shops. Sells both cooked meals and raw for cooking. I had hoped to come back for soft-shelled crab which was in season. But time ran out on our visit to the Big Apple.

Yelp
Amazing service and extremely fresh, tasty, and plentiful options!! We ordered a cod fish and chips and grouper sandwich!!! Both were so good but I preferred the cod. Fries were also seasoned well with old bay and both came out nice and hot to the point where my mouth was on fire!! Highly highly recommend for all your fish needs, prepared, fresh, condiments, sides-- EVERYTHING. The guy was really helpful and informative and told us that he goes to the fish market every morning to ensure everything is fresh. I will definitely be back again!! Thank you!!

Yelp
I would always see this spot when I drove down Bedford Ave and say I needed to stop in. Today was the day!! When I entered I was a little confused (in a good way) bc it doesn't appear like your typical fish fry joint. I swear this spot would be a dope speakeasy and when you push on a refrigerator door it turns into a seafood restaurant but, I digress... The food was perfect, the owner was there a true blue Brooklyn cat, full of life and amazing stories about the borough we both love. We had our food to stay and I swear that he treated everyone with the same love, kindness and respect. He also mentioned that it was a family business and his sister made our meals! So dope...go here!!!

Yelp
Gem of a restaurant. The owner is a great person. The food is really really good. Great quality. The storefront looks really nice and great for a quick brunch or takeout.

Yelp
Omg omg omg I've passed by this place so many times and I decided to stop in today out of all days and I must say I'm happy I made the stop. The fish is desirably and irresistibly good whoa what a way to go Shipwreck is now my new found love and going to definitely be on Deck. The service here is welcoming and great I just hope they expand eventually. I will most certainly without a doubt be back. The ambiance is pretty chill and the setup is nice.

Pamela C.

Yelp
I was extremely impressed with the customer service and how much patience the staff had given to me. I ordered the grill shrimp and sweet potato fries. DELICIOUS! Shipwreck Gourmet is a VIBE ! #order the

Yelp
I thought they closed but I am relieved to find out they just moved. I've had a lot of good meals from shipwreck and I'm glad they're not gone!

Yelp
Outstanding local fresh seafood market. New location on Nostrand. Discovered after hitting up the book guys on Greene. The owner personally sources the best fresh fish and seafood daily from the Hunts Point market which explains why its so good. Not as well known are their chunky thick New England chowder loaded with fresh clams, delicious sandwiches/ po boys, oyster & shrimp, lobster rolls and platter specials served with Old Bay fries at ridiculously good prices, to eat in or go. I wish we had s spot like this in my neighborhood. Consider yourself lucky if it's in yours.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Have you tried this space? They have the seafood! Sometimes I forget they are down the street and lock myself after buying fish anywhere else. They have fresh and cooked meals really tasty. I always go get the mussels And clams.

Flora P.

Yelp
Great fresh seafood and the owner is really nice (let my kid help out with choosing clams, always friendly!)
google avatar

Gracie H.

Yelp
Amazing!!! BEST LOBSTER ROLL IN THE CITY!! The lobster was so flavorful and delicious. Fries were crispy and had a nice little kick. Make sure to ask for lemon for the lobster roll and fries! Nice atmosphere with bar seating facing large windows so you can look out while enjoying your food. The people that work here are extremely friendly and fun.
google avatar

Yelp
I've passed this spot several times and finally decided to walk over for lunch. I was not disappointed! The seafood is super fresh and the customer service is excellent! As a first time customer Joey made me like we were old friends. I had grilled salmon with salad. It's the best grilled salmon I've ever had. Perfectly cooked with great flavor. I'm not sure what the sauce is but I could eat it by the spoonful. I also got a lb of large raw shrimp and salmon. Can't wait to cook them up! I'll definitely be back to try other items on the menu.
google avatar

Kande G.

Yelp
The food is soo good. I've had the fish sandwich and fish and chips. It's my go to fish spot. It's family owned and everybody is so nice, all smiles. The inside is cute and inviting. Plus they have basketball games on the TV. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Joey is the gold standard when it comes to customer service, they really don't make them like him anymore! From his suggestions to which fish to buy, to calling his other store to bring over fresh tilapia for me, and the chowder and other goodies he gave while we waited was actually so delicious. Will definitely come back
google avatar

Shu Jin S.

Yelp
I wanted something healthy delivered for lunch last weekend and haven't had a decent fish sandwich in who knows how long. I got the red snapper sandwich (grilled), the old bay fries and a salad. While I think the salad was just ok, the sandwich and fries were incredible. I'm also impressed that the fries arrived still crispy, something that's very hard to pull off for delivery orders. I loved it so much that I just ordered it again for lunch today -- this time, giving the grilled salmon burger a shot. I definitely need to come in-person one of these days!
google avatar

Antonio C.

Yelp
Great food, Great Service! We come from Midwood to get great tasting food! It's definitely worth the trip!

Jadie E.

Yelp
Fantastic fresh fish every time and super friendly service. I love chatting with them about what's fresh and where the fish came from. They do a great job removing bones and filleting the fish as well. Much better quality than you get from Whole Foods and much friendlier service than just about anywhere else in Brooklyn at least.

Nathan S.

Yelp
best spot! amazing seafood (i got the atlantic cod) and great service. they went above and beyond.
google avatar

Claire J.

Yelp
LOVED the great vibe here. They treated their customers like family and friends and like they're welcoming you into their home. We came here on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. I ordered the fish sandwich with salad which was real good. The oysters were fresh too. I wish we had this nearby.
google avatar

Fula O.

Yelp
Finally made it to Shipwreck. I was craving fresh seafood and decided to incorporate a walk to Shipwreck on my daily pandemic walk. Friendly engaging service. Seafood was really fresh and can't wait to cook it tonight. It was worth the wait on line outside to get in and make your purchases. Will definitely be back and get their early since they sell out
google avatar

Frantz C.

Yelp
So much lobster in the lobster roll it's unbelievable. Fresh and tender with a nice and light mayo dressing you can taste the actual lobster. So much lobster you need a fork or a HUGE mouth to eat it. The potato salad was delicious too. This is now our neighborhood fish market. Customer service was beyond friendly and we loved chatting with the owner. Will support consistently from now on.
google avatar

Judah M.

Yelp
It's something about the vibe of this spot that I really love. One time I went in there and they had Top Boy playing on the tv. If you know you know. It felt like a community spot, like I could sit in there and eat my food without feeling bothered or too overwhelmed by people. Now, the seafood is fresh baby. It taste like somebody in the back went fishing that morning. No lie. I still got lil bits of sea salt in my mouth. I've been here a few times, but this time I got the salmon burger. Again, hella fresh. My only complaint which might be controversial is that there is alot of Old Bay seasoning...both on the food and in the store. Which I know Old Bay is bomb...but my southern taste buds had never had Old Bay until I moved up north so bare with me. Just my preference. Definitely the spot to slide to if you're in the area. Let me know if I'm tripping about the Old Bay!

Yelp
It's always good to go food shopping on a full stomach. On the way to Trader Joe's, Ship wreck caught my eye at the light. I drove around the block and found a spot. I walked in and had a very friendly greeting from one of the owners. It's actually a seafood boutique, they sell fresh seafood and you can purchase and eat in or take out. It's not a big place, but it's cool to sit , conversate with patrons coming in and out and just hangout in Bed Stuy on a nice Sunday afternoon. I ordered one of the specials which was Cajun fried shrimp and old bay fries. The owner also threw in 3 nice size peices of fried Cod. Everything melted in my mouth like butter. Seasoned to perfection, l was definitely hooked. Born and raised in Bed-Stuy l am always happy to see the changes of gentrification and enjoy checking out new businesses in the neighborhood. Chatting with the owner who was quite friendly and very knowledgeable on many walks of life was one of the highlights of the week. He goes to get fresh fish every morning at 2 am, and very fresh it was. There was as quite an impressive selection. I have not had fried shrimp or cod that tasted anything like this in New York City. This was a taste experience that comes when l am out of state on vacation. This place is a must have experience, there are also some other nice surprises , you would never expect. All l can say is stop by.

Yelp
I only ordered online uber. The fry jumbo shrimp and old bay fries where delicious I ordered it 2 times one time shrimp was nice and crunchy one time they was a little soggy but still okay. Maybe they should use a vented box. I also ordered the fried shrimp and fish combo it'd funny the shrimp was not cooked the same way as the 10 PC shrimp combo seem to not have the same corn meal base coating which was a let down. The cod was ok I didn't like the taste of the whitings not sure if it was fresh whiting seem a little fishy to me I hate if the whiting is not fresh. Lobster roll not the best the Lobster meat didn't not taste that good to me and the bun was just a potato hot dog bun not cool a Lobster roll should come on a high end toasted roll I would never ordere that again BK Lobster does a Lobster roll right! Shipwreck does a lot of their menu right and delicious but take a pass on the Lobster roll and crab cake (hardly no crab meat in it) even though Shipwreck have some misses they have so very good stuff on the menu I look forward to trying other items too.
google avatar

Roody D.

Yelp
Shipwreck not only provides fresh seafood and great service. Their cooked food is a must try. The snapper sandwich was perfect
google avatar

Marina L.

Yelp
Stopped to grab a jar of oysters and ended up getting everything I needed for a Xmas seafood feast. The owner is so friendly and helpful, the quality of everything was as fresh as it gets and pretty reasonably priced. I loved the whitefish salad too, made a perfect little appetizer at our party!

zhixin z.

Yelp
I ordered it through uber eat. The Maine lobster roll is21 usd definitely very delicious lobster roll

Yelp
- ordered delivery - limited menu on Uber eats is not the same that u see online I really wanted that lobster roll and was sad to see it was not being offered - shrimp was great - they give a lot of fries - fried foods don't travel well, so it came in very soggy - wife enjoyed branzino burger - I think branzino burger was kind of sloppy - the lady on phone sed the salmon burger and triple platter are the best dishes - I was fine with my shrimp - Uber eats is kind of expensive, go in person if you can

Lisa W.

Yelp
Crab cake filled with filler & imitation crab meat.so disappointed. This is how big the large shrimps are: as small as a 2 ounce lid container

Richard L.

Yelp
i love fried fish, grew up eating it...fond memories of the numerous fish fry spots all over ny, sadly many are gone... found this gem, the food is straightforward and fresh, which is all one could ask for they sell fish as well the woman behind the counter was fun to converse with and even hooked me up, no pun intended the place is not a sit in and chow down but it is clean and does not smell fishy, which is usually the case with moay fish fry spots the food came out fast and they provide plenty of dipping options, all the usual suspects but i really liked the fact i didnt have to request everything cast yourselves out and get hooked on some fish you will "hail a bout" it *their halibut was bomb and if they allow, their fried combo, made me reminisce of those golden fish fry days
google avatar

Christopher N.

Yelp
Just wanted to reiterate everything that has been said in previous reviews. The owner, Joey, is very friendly and welcoming! I've always wanted to attempt homemade sushi, and I saw on yelp that Shipwreck has sushi grade tuna and salmon. Picked up a pound of the red tuna, which ended up being a little bit over a pound but was marked/priced as pound, and a lobster tail, and was even given a $5 discount on top of that for being a new customer. Clearly my sashimi cutting skills will need some work, but the tuna was delicious, fresh, and flavorful, as was the lobster tail. Both the service and food here are high quality. I will absolutely be returning, without a doubt.
google avatar

Franny F.

Yelp
I stopped here for a quick bite; ended up buying seafood to cook at home. I had the fried red snapper fish with seasoned fries which was amazing. Fish was well seasoned and fries were crispy, tasted like a southern fish fry. The store also carry some local brews (cans) that pair well with the menu so definitely a plus. The place is small and inviting with a cozy vibe for a quick bite & shop. The customer service is great. I highly recommend you come through and see for yourself.
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh and delicious seafood and meals to go. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and owners. Be ready to wait during a busy time. Great addition to the neighborhood!

Yelp
Five stars for the beautiful act of kindness I got to witness on my first visit yesterday. A homeless man stood at the door - perhaps a foot or two away. The woman at the register asked if he wanted something to eat - she called him by first name. She then asked the kitchen staff to make a box of fish and fries. Once it was done, she went outside and brought the food straight to this man. I have never seen such an act of kindness from a business in nyc. This gentleman was treated him with humility and respect despite his circumstances. I was moved by this exchange. I came from far to finally eat here and I will return just because of what I got to see. And food was amazing!
google avatar

Lynnie J.

Yelp
First time eating here and might I say it was not bad.. I ordered the soft shell crab sandwich with fries. I haven't had one in so long and it was really good, bursting with flavors. The staff was also really nice.
google avatar

Dee J.

Yelp
As a vegetarian, I can't attest to the quality of the food, but according to the wife, this place is epic. She raves about the sushi-grade tuna that she gets a few times a week, and has equal praise for the salmon fillets. This past weekend, she indulged in the crab sandwich and inhaled it. All of this said, I can attest to how awesome the owner -- Joey -- and his nephew, James, are; they're ALWAYS positive and engaging and totally down to earth. Dare I say they run a tight ship(wreck)?! Even though I don't eat anything they sell, I try to make a point of stopping by with the wife so we can chat with Joey and co. They make this spot a true neighborhood joint, and it's a wonderful addition to Bedford Ave.
google avatar

George F.

Yelp
Wonderful service! I was working across the street and wanted something to eat, who knew? Checked Yelp and ordered the salmon burger and old bay fries. Dee fn licious. Only reason I ordered that was it was the only thing I could remember from the menu. The only reason I mention this is because the staff let the phone ring and placed emphasis on the customers in the place. The gentleman even emphasized if he picked up the phone those inside would have a longer wait. TAKE CARE OF THE CUSTOMER IN FRONT OF YOU! The salmon burger didn't last long. I went back in and ordered a grilled red snapper sandwich for dinner and they took care of me. Will definitely go out of my way to make a return visit. Shipwreck, thank you!

Liz E.

Yelp
If you want to find the worlds best seafood, you have to check out shipwreck Boutique. This was my first experience over the weekend. I had an amazing time. The food was absolutely delicious. The owner Joey was exceptional. Nothing but great vibes.. I recommend everyone to go there.
google avatar

Sunita H.

Yelp
It's amazing food is prepared fresh, owner and staff are extremely friendly and there's enough covid friendly seating. My new weekly go to spot

Kaya F.

Yelp
Never again. Salmon and fries. The fried trio combo. How do you put fried food on top of salad, no salad dressing wilted lettuce warm tomatoes. And both plates together cost $52 like what. never again never ever ever again. I feel foolish by even complaining and buying it because I definitely could have gone to the grocery store and spent $50 or even 45 or even 40 And made a way better meal.
google avatar

Reshard R.

Yelp
I can't move. I've eaten too much and I have no shame about it. The way I figure, if I sit here long enough I will be able to digest my great meal and eat more. But because I am human, I will wait until I get home and see where I am in this process... then I will try to stuff my face with the best darn grilled shrimp and salmon. Also, don't sleep on how yummy these fries are. Everything seasoned and cooked to perfection. Seeing people contemplate and then walk away...you have made a grave mistake in your day of life choices. This was a phenomenal meal in the middle of a fish boutique. Best customer service ever.
google avatar

Jane L.

Yelp
This place is a neighborhood gem. They are true fish mongers. You can measure their experience and the pride they feel toward their products as soon as you walk through the door. We got cod and whitefish salad from this place and the owner gave us sample filet of basa because we had never tried it before. So generous and thoughtful. All three were so delicious. I would definitely recommend this place. It's hands down the best fish market in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
shipwreck is a neighborhood staple that i will definitely be frequenting. came for lunch for the first time on a beautiful autumn day, was greeted by a very friendly man at the counter who helpfully explained the menu and specials to us without any prompting. we ordered the grilled salmon burger and combo platter - food is light and healthy but really delicious and satisfying at the same time, in a makes you feel good about yourself kind-of-way. i'm always afraid to order salmon because it has the potential to be really dry but this one was not. food was brought out to us promptly with a bunch of condiments. we ate outside in the sun surrounded by fall foliage in total bliss.
google avatar

Gogo A.

Yelp
Where do I begin! My friends and I felt welcomed when we walked into this spot. They have a cute outdoor area where you can either sit and wait for your order or eat it right there. We ordered the Cajun shrimp and old bay fries which was delicious!!! While seated outside we had a great conversation with Tyler and Joey who are owners of this establishment. They are very warm and inviting which made my dining experience pleasant. I will be back here based on their kindness alone.
