Where to Find the Best Fish Tacos in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Tucked inside Bottlecraft’s Oceanside outpost, this casual counter from the owners of Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub serves up a streamlined menu of tacos and poke showcasing sustainable seafood. The fish taco pairs the fresh market catch with cabbage slaw, Shoots sauce, pickled veggies, cilantro, habanero carrots, and cotija cheese." - Candice Woo

Yep, loved this spot. We had almost every taco on the menu and enjoyed every one—the shrimp especially. The batter on that one was doing the damn thing. ❤️ Moreover, they had a really nice selection of beers and wines by the glass as well as a great little shop if you wanted to take the party home. Truly worth a visit!

Google
This place didn't knock my socks off. It was quick but the food was pricey for the portions you get. The flavor was there with the tacos but the quesadilla was lack-luster and small. Beer was good. We likely won't be back. We were hoping for more but I can see this being a great spot for tourist or people who don't know what other places are available with better quality around the corner.

Google
4 stars for the tacos. 5 stars for their FISH WINGS. First time trying their fish wings and it was mind blowing. What a creative dish it is! Otherwise, cute little place with an outside sit-down area for your kids and your pup. Great pet friendly patio. Their tacos are quite pricey. $5.50 each and it's tiny. I personally don't care much about their tacos especially considering how expensive they are.

Google
My husband and I stumbled upon Shoots Fish and Beer this past weekend while passing through Oceanside, and we’re so glad we did! After a long drive home from up north, this spot was the perfect find. The bearded bartender (wish I remembered his name lol) was incredibly kind and made us feel so welcome, which isn’t always the case when we dine out. While they don’t serve hard alcohol, their creative drink remakes were delicious, and we loved the option to buy drinks from their store to enjoy either outside or at the bar. The outdoor seating is lovely, and the vibe is relaxed and inviting. We’ll be back the next time we’re craving a laid-back atmosphere and great service.

Google
Had fish tacos and some drinks here. You order food separate from the bar. It came out quickly and it was so fresh and fantastic. They had a number of beers and wine on tap. They also had some items in their little market including bottles of wine and other gear. The seating is somewhat limited but it's right by the beach so I'm sure you can find somewhere to sit and enjoy the ocean.

I’ve been meaning to check this place out for a while and it did not disappoint. Went with my wife and fur child. Ordered a Fishwish, Pescaderos and San Miguel tacos. Didn’t try the fishwish but it looked delish. The tacos were on point, lots of flavor. We left early because the weather turned and got cold. Great vibe, the Gals working there were awesome and welcoming. Shot out to the chef for accommodating and creating deliciousness. Definitely going back!

Google
Food is decent. Tacos are small and the side of fries is tiny. Tacos are good, fries are not. Spicy hand roll is good. Beer selection is great. TVs with games on and outdoor patio are nice.

Yelp
Best poke on the mainland! Seriously so fresh. Just wish the portions were a bit bigger, and that one could purchase poke by the pound (like Bear Flag Co., for example - lil suggestion for the owners!). Also obsessed with their spam musubi roll. Yummy selection of beers on tap. Love how there's a large heated dog-friendly patio in the back. Ginger even made friends with an adorable chonky beagle during one visit. Will forever keep returning to Shoots, especially prior to a beach day!

Yelp
oceanside has numerous craft beer places. this one is off coast hwy so a bit lower key and had the unheard inside seating on this chilly day. besides the tap wall they have a wall of coolers holding various beers (no modelo) and a wall of wines. industrial interior with hightop seating. upon entering food ordering is on the left. move down to the right for your alcohol or self serve tepid water. we were there for the food and if you're lucky enough to get poke nachos ($16) go for it! they're a bit greasy, spicy, piquant and just hits everywhere. the fish was partially cooked ahi and albacore chunks. also ordered were battered yellowtail street tacos ($5) each. i give the four stars for slow and intermittent service and taco price. in defense of the restaurant we were told the tacos were on the small size so three tacos were like a snack. street parking. location is sandwiched between a coffee shop and clothing store. enjoy!

Yelp
Great food and great drinks! Shoots fish and beer has seating on the inside and a large outdoor area with tons of seating. It's kid and pet friendly when you sit in their outdoor area. To order, they have a register in the front where you order food and non-alcoholic drinks. To order the alcoholic drinks, you order at the bar. Food is brought to your table. I throughly enjoyed my experience here because all the workers were very nice and laid back as well as the customers there. Everyone is just out having a good time. Dogs were happy and kids were happy since there's a little open area where they can play. Heads up though, we didn't see any high chairs. I loved their potato taco! It was such a unique flavor! The spam musubi was in the form of a sushi roll with plenty of sauce dozed all over. The elote had a spicy sauce drizzled over, so if you don't take spice then maybe ask for sauce on the side or no sauce. Parking is fairly easy as they have a parking lot in the back and also plenty of easy street parking.

Yelp
Cool little restaurant with a wide variety of beers and cider. It was a bit early for us to drink, but this place has so many beers and would be fun for an early end to the work day. We decided to try this place for an early lunch and ordered the poke and soft tacos (Pescadero, San Miguel, and Kalua Pork). All of the food was really flavorful. The poke needed some base because the ahi tuna was a bit too flavorful and didn't come with enough salad. The tacos are like street tacos (i.e. small), so you need a few for a meal. The ambience is fun like a bar with limited seating inside the restaurant/bathroom area and more seating in the back.

Yelp
We enjoyed some afternoon bites at Shoots. If you need a motivation to get out on a Monday afternoon - definitely stop by Shoots for their Musubi Monday! The spam Musubi is rolled like sushi and topped with different toppings each week - in our case a delicious spicy tuna blend. It was so good, we ended up ordering another one soon after. We also enjoyed the San Miguel Fish Taco. It was breaded and drizzled with a delicious crema sauce. The taste had a good kick without being overly spicy. It's good to know that the location in Oceanside is a walk up and order. The Oceanside location is in the same building as Bottlecraft and there is a charming area in the back for patio seating. Looking forward to stopping by again.

Yelp
Disappointed. Had high hopes for fresh poke. $20 poke with 4 small cubes of fish lacking flavor. I'll stick with Seaside Market fresh poke where you can get a much better value.

Yelp
Great restaurant just off the main coast hwy. Picked up the fishwich which was phenomenal. Crispy and crunchy outside with a juicy center. Definitely will be back to try some more items on the menu. Smaller shop but there's seating at the bar and it looked like there is more spots outside.

Yelp
You can't really go wrong with anything on the menu. Everything is fresh and super tasty!! Shrimp taco is my personal favorite, as well as the fish wing. But the healthy stuff is tasty too!
google avatar

Gloria R.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch and ordered the bottled lemonade, fish taco (yellowtail), shrimp battered taco, and the masubi. The space is shared with another company that sells wine, so you have to order to the left of the entrance. The service was fine, the total for two of each taco, two sodas and the masubi was around $45, so not inexpensive. The food was incredibly flavorful, but what fell flat was the tortillas, they were absolutely cold. We sat there so that the food would be warm (nothing to go), and were a bit disappointed that it didn't come out warm.

Yelp
Best fish tacos in the San Diego area! Everything tastes so fresh, and the service is fantastic! Awesome spot to sit and have lunch as it shares a room with a bar and also has ample outdoor seating in the back!
google avatar

Yelp
Fun atmosphere combined with great fish tacos! Everyone here is super friendly and they have fun events going on ever first Friday of the month, including community vendors, shops, and live music! I definitely recommend the Ahi fish tacos.

Yelp
Came for lunch earlier today as soon as they opened. I've heard of this spot before by numerous people so I had to try it for myself. The Pescaderos taco was dry. All of their tacos were super tiny; I'd probably have to eat 5 tacos in order to be satisfied. The Poke Nachos were misleading... I thought it would be poke/raw fish, however it was cooked/grilled. The wonton chips in it were good though. The Cheyne's OG Poke Bowl was probably the best out of everything we had. Although the chunks of fish were huge, the flavor of the fish was lacking, since it was to be eaten with rice. Their fish quality is fresh but the food overall was mediocre.

Yelp
Shoots and Beer is a Great place to hang out and have a nice cold beer from their extended assortment of brews and unique delicious appetizers. I really enjoyed the outdoor space It is a great environment. Great place to hang out.

Yelp
Found the business on IG and they hit the mark for me. located at the Tremont collective the ambiance was bustling! the vibe of the shared space and the outdoor seating is really nice as you can peruse the eclectic variety of beers, wines, and other drinks while you're waiting on your food. The only unfortunate part is that it can get crowded really quickly, so if you're not into that order to-go! It's a cool spot for some quick grinds and i'm sure it'll blow up in the summer. Service was pretty quick considering how busy they were on a Friday night. Everyone at the counter was friendly and hard at work! food 4.5/5 musubi: fun twist on an island classic. presentation was dope and the sauce brushed on was a lil sweeter than the way we make it at home - still good tho! the fish wings and sauce were the best thing I had. I was shocked at how much I liked these and sucked these down to the bone and paper. there was a super light/mild spice to them but it was enough to keep you going back for more. the fish (yellowtail collar) was meaty and perfectly cooked sunset: the poke itself was the perfect texture - buttery and no stringy sensation that you tend to find on the mainland. presentation was A1, however I feel like the proportion of fish to krab/cucumber ratio was lacking. I will say that the sauce everything is tossed in was delightful and the cucumber taste wasn't overpowering. pescadaros: seemed pretty small in size, but they made up for it in flavor! really nice blend of sauces, fish, and the pickled onion wrapped in a tortilla. you could probably eat this in 2-3 bites, but savor that taste and chew slow! overall, i think this place is pretty pricey, but I appreciate the presentation and quality of the food/fish. it's set in a cool location so I think it'll do well

Yelp
Tasty and quality tacos, but literally puniest tacos ever. Seriously, gone in 2 bites. Not filling at all. And they're over $5 each! That's insane.

Yelp
I last Saturday I was at event at Prince Park & Shootz pop-up tent was there. What I had was a teaser for the real thing. Today, I still had the taste of Shootz in my mouth. I decided to make a little Oside trip up the PCH. I got to Shootz, it's a small a little restaurant inside of a taproom. Customer service was on point & atmosphere was pretty chill. The menu was dope but what caught my eye was the shrimp & grits ( special for that day ). I from the south & we love our grits. I got their fish tacos, also. Wow, my mind was blown away from their dish. The shrimp was not your typical shrimp. This shrimp was fat that you can feed 3 kids, the grits was on point & fish taco was a WOW What I was told by the chef, they get all their seafood fresh from the local fishermen. That's a A+ to me I HIGHLY recommend, trust me !!!

Yelp
Some of the freshest, tastiest fish I've ever had. Whether you like fish or think you don't, Shoots will convince you. It literally melts in your mouth. The ambiance is super chill and beachy, with some of the friendliest staff I've ever met bringing it all together. Be sure to try some of their local beers! Go to Shoots!!!!!!!!

Yelp
Not bad but I didn't have the best experience. The whole set up is very trendy and cute, the beer side has Soo many options there's definitely a drink for everyone. Unfortunately, when it came to the food I was a bit let down. Mainly because ordered fish sticks for my 5year old and they didn't mention that they are SPICY... the fish is coated in a spice then fried so there's was no warning just a spice bomb for my kiddo. The avo taco was good! At first they only brought out a side of avocado I was confused, but they quickly fixed it and apologized for the confusion. I don't know if I'll be back the food choices are limited but I know a lot of fish places are. Go check it out for yourself it's trendy and cute seating in the back.

Yelp
My go-to lunch spot in Encinitas - in love with their food and you can't beat the vibes! Everything on the menu that I've tried so far is lights out and I love that they are always changing up their special offerings! PRO TIP: follow them on Instagram and check out their specials because they change daily. In terms of their static menu the tacos (pedcaderos is my fav) and poke bowls are delicious. On the smaller side but high quality food and every dish is thought out. Specials to keep an eye out for - FISHWICH (available on fridays), fish burger or any fish sando has not disappointed, spam musubi, and the tuna Crunchwrap and the stand outs for me! Don't sleep on desert - their cheesecake is incredible (especially the lime and blueberry flavors)!

Yelp
10/10 would recommend to anyone who appreciates good poke and unique tacos!!! Super casual, order at the counter environment with both inside and outdoor seating options. They share a space with Bottle Craft beer company so you can have a beer or cider with your meal! I chose the Cheyne's way poke bowl and my spouse got the queso, poke and fish tacos (per the recommendation of the employee)... everything was so fresh, so flavorful, and melt in your mouth delicious!!!

Yelp
Probably the best shrimp tacos I've ever had. They have their standard food menu and their 'what's happening now' menu. Like to come here and have a couple tacos and a pint of beer from Bottle Craft which is an adjoining business. Most seating is outside. Parking on the street or alleyway behind. Good for small groups. And the service is prompt. Be sure to ask for their fried jalapeños, which are mostly seedless (tasty minus all the heat), for your tacos.

Yelp
I really appreciate how quickly Oceanside is growing when it comes to new food, drinks, and coffee culture. There were many new places opened recently so you can definitely pick and choose between them. Shootz Fish and Beer is part of one complex that hosts a few new shops adjacent to each other. You can't see it driving on Highway 101 but the place is located right behind Bagby Brewery. I would recommend Shootz Fish and Beer for drinks such as beer, wine, and lively atmosphere on the back patio, but no necessarily for food. We got disappointed in this area. The food selection was limited therefore I was hoping that all dishes would be executed very well. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. The biggest fail was the Elote. The corn was undercooked in parts and addition of katsuobushi flakes as a garnish didn't go well or give this famous Mexican treat any favours. The poke bowl was okay. Tuna chunks had good seasoning. Rice was on a dry side. I would come back to have a drink with friends but would take my appetite elsewhere afterwards.

Yelp
I think I found heaven on earth! I had a giant MO eating their food and will definitely be back. The Pescado taco and Cheyne's OG poke bowl made me so happy I can see straight. I have been craving a Poké bowl for months and to find this place was a godsend. The fish taco was fresh, flavorful and was a great appetizer. The poke- high priced and worth every dollar. I won't avail you of how good it was because I don't want this place overrun.

Yelp
I go to Oceanside all the time, but I've never seen Shootz before! We stumbled upon it on a particularly hot day, so the prospect of a nice, cold beer was alluring enough to draw us in. I'm delighted to report this restaurant, which we ventured into on a spontaneous whim, was really good! The fish tasted fresh, and boy, was it fresh! There's a glass counter where you can see into the kitchen, and I watched them filet a whole fish! The food was delicious, and I was pleasantly surprised by the side of seasoned corn. I know there are mixed Yelp reviews of it, but we enjoyed it. It was a nice casual place, and I'd stop by again if I was nearby. The staff were friendly, and it an overall nice experience.

Yelp
Shootz Fish and Beer is located inside Bootlecraft Oceanside. Small menu. We ordered: Fish Tacos (Pescaderos)- Were good lots of flavor, served with fresh toppings Shrimp Tacos (San Miguel) Were good, it's served with one long fried shrimp. The toppings were fresh and complimented the shrimp well. Tacos were good but SMALL. Recommend getting 3 tacos if you are hungry and sharing some poke. Also, ordered the Cheyne's OG Poke (Ahi)- it was really good, big chunks of ahi, served with rice and seaweed salad. The service is not fast, so definitely recommend taking your time to order.

Yelp
Shoots fish & beer is a revelation. Interesting concept creative, tasty food, at a fair price, alongside a great curated beer and wine list - bottlecraft next door. Really loved their macaroni salad with nopales and furikaki. Also don't miss the crispy fish sandwich. And great fish taco.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing poke and even better atmosphere. Shootz is within the Tremont Collective with Brixton, Fresko, Bottle craft, and more directly behind Bagby one street west of PCH. Inside, Shootz is combined with Bottlecraft for an epic combo of craft beer on tap, and craft beer store, and then poke! The fish here is superlatively fresh to a level unseen in Oceanside before. The texture, color, and flavor of the fish here is slightly better than Grubby's Poke in Carlsbad, my current favorite poke place. Shootz has a few disadvantages to Grubby's in that you don't get to do a custom toppings bowl like at other poke places. You also miss out on Grubby's amazing smoked shrimp. However, Shootz has some advantages over traditional build-a-bowl poke shops. For example, their menu changes often with very interesting specials like spam musubi, sea bass parmesan sandwich on milk bun, and tacos. The food quality is quite remarkable. I tried the sea bass parmesan on a whim and it was jaw droppingly good. After three visits here with each menu item absolute perfection, its clear Shootz is a 5-star addition to the Oceanside food scene.

Yelp
Today we are celebrating preschool back in sesh so we came over to Tremont Street in Oceanside for #tacos and #beer over @shootzfishxbeer Their menu changes daily based on their fresh catch, but you can find tacos, poke, sushi, musubi and other great noms on their menu. And their selection of beers -- omg! So many on tap, plus a market selection to buy to bring home for later! I love that they give an option for 4oz pours, so if you're a lightweight like me, you won't feel wasteful. Or you can try multiple options that way, kinda like building your own flight at $2-$4 per beer. I tried the Blueberry Cobbler Muffin, and it really did taste like a dessert with slight sour blueberry notes. Stephen got the Bandon, which was a rich coffee flavored Irish stout. Today's catch was Opu, so we tried that in the fish taco and it was so good. It's a more buttery fish, and they seasoned it so nicely so the fresh original fish flavor still came through. The baja style shrimp taco had such a nice beer batter too. One of the specials today was a kalua pork sando using bread from their neighbors @hokkaido_bread_company and we added fried jalapeños to it. Perfectly smoky, juicy kalua just the way I love it. They have seating out front and inside too, but their back patio is really nice. Would be nice to hang out there with friends over drinks in the summer. We definitely want to go back to try more

Yelp
Some top notch poke bowls!! They also have a wide beer selection and the merch is awesome I had to grab a shirt and glass
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cool vibe of this place with the other brewery, market and businesses. The food is so fresh and the menu differs from day to day. The poke is so good! But expensive.

Yelp
One of our favorites places to ride our bikes to on the weekends. Just a couple blocks to the beach....Shootz is connected to bottle craft so it's the perfect spot to stop in for a draft beer and some tacos. Ha a great local vibe. Bottle craft also has a great selection of natural wine and beer to take home so it's a great little stop. As far as food goes, I did go down one star just strictly the food. Idk why but I tend to find that some of their fish is a bit fishy for my personal taste. We were just in last weekend and my husband got a fish sandwich.....Sticking by my opinion on that. However - The potato tacos are THE BEST taco on the little menu. It's so good! Definitely worth trying especially if you've never had one! The staff is always really nice too!
google avatar

Jenn H.

Yelp
We were visiting from south San Diego and needed some food quick. We were amazed by the quality of tacos and service here! We ordered takeout of the celery root, fried shrimp, and grilled fish. Each one was so tasty and fresh. We loved being able to grab some beers from the brewery shop as well. Definitely coming back and recommending this place to others!
google avatar

Aphrodaisy L.

Yelp
I was looking for some fish tacos and this spot popped up in my Yelp search. It's a bar, restaurant and store with some of the freshest fish you will ever eat! I got one fish, one shrimp, and an order of elote (corn). The tacos are tiny. I probably could have eaten 4, but I was in a rush and didn't have time to make a 2nd order. The shrimp was ok... I was super impressed with the fish (which was OBVIOUSLY fresh caught) and also the roasted corn MADE MY DAY. I would consider this on the pricier side of fish tacos just because they are so tiny... but the quality more than makes up for it. Next time I am in Oceanside, I will definitely pop in again! Maybe if someone else is. Driving I can take advantage of the great selection of beer as well!
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
The fish tacos were tiny and way overpriced. Location and small menu should have given it away. We will not be going back.....
google avatar

Andrea L.

Yelp
Food was great- check out the daily specials. Staff behind the Beer and wine counter were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We loved the communal space in the back. It had a great outdoor area for kids. I also liked that not everyone in our group had to get food/drinks from the same place. There's a lot of great spots in the building and they all share the communal place in the back. Love this!

Yelp
Stopped in on a whim and was not disappointed. Chill environment. Good people. GREAT grub.

Yelp
I can see this place becoming really popular. All their food was AMAZING! Honestly one of the best fish tacos I've had. Parking There's a small parking lot in the back alley and street parking. This place is surrounded by small breweries and eateries so it might be difficult to find parking depending on the time and day. Food San Miguel Taco 5/5: Deep-fried fish with the right seasoning. Add in fried jalapeños and avocado and omg! Fishwich 5/5: Not your average fish fillet. The bread they used is so soft and the amount of fish is just right! Bluchop 3.5/5: 30-day aged tuna sounded fancy and something we've never had before but after trying it, it tasted like regular pan-fried tuna. We taste a hint of the aged by the bone and on the skin. I wouldn't really recommend it unless you have extra cash to spare for tuna. Environment This place is easy to miss, it shares the same space as a brewery and has a small sign behind a pole. So keep an eye out!

Connor M.

Yelp
I had an amazing experience at this fish & bar! I ordered the fish wings with Korean buffalo hot sauce, and they were a perfect combination of crispy and spicy. To wash it down, I tried the mango wheat ale, which was a refreshing choice. The only downside was the long line due to the small kitchen, but the delicious food and great drinks made it worth the wait. The inside was clean & had a great selection of choose wines and beers!
google avatar

Thomas B.

Yelp
Two words....Fish Wings!!! Always fresh always hits the spot! Not to mention it's connected to bottle craft so good beer too! Ahi tacos also slap!
google avatar

Vincent C.

Yelp
I don't have many words for this place but damn it's delicious!!!!!! Each time you come here the main menu changes so be prepared. This isn't a huge restaurant that takes reservations it's more of a chill spot to eat great food and drink a cold beer. Ten stars!!!!
google avatar

Lola M.

Yelp
Food was really good. However, the portion sizes are extremely small. They have a decent wine selection as well. With that being said, I don't think I would come back for the food. I go back to pick up a bottle of wine and maybe have a beer and sit on the patio.

George K.

Yelp
Just saw your presentation on KUSI, the guy should have worn gloves, his fingers looked filthy!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this awesome place on a recent trip to Oceanside. Love the concept and space. Ordered fish tacos and beer from Bottle Craft that shares the same space. The fish was incredibly fresh and delicious. This place would be on my regular rotation if I lived in the area. Great prices, great good and a great space.

Sara M.

Yelp
I have been to Shootz Fish & Beer twice now. The quality of food/ingredients is definitely high. Everything tastes very fresh & the flavors go well together. With that being said, the portions are definitely small... especially for the price. I definitely appreciate the quality & taste of the food. But I cannot get over how pricey the food is for how little the portions are. Both times I've gone, I've left hungry. The tacos are so tiny, I was shocked at how small they are. I have never seen smaller tacos in my life. Especially for being fish/shrimp tacos. My other complaint is the poke. It is definitely delicious, served with fresh fish, seaweed salad, dry seaweed, sesame seasonings, rice & topped with green onions. The pieces are not cut evenly. Traditional poke is cut in cubes that are even this is not, it's cut into longer larger pieces & some smaller pieces I find it harder to eat prepared this way. The service was nice. I was actually greeted & had a pleasant experience with the girls working. Which almost feels rare now, especially at places where you just order at the front. The place is clean & well kept. I ate outside it was very cute out there. Inside is simple & clean for the most part. I would recommend this place if you are looking for a small bite to eat. This is not the place to go when you are really hungry though. They are a small business & I do respect that. I'm just disappointed in the cost for how little the portions are.

Yelp
Ohhh myyy, had the tuna crunchtada here and it was mouth watering amazing. I savored each bite and it was definitely enough to fill me up. Next time, no sharing. This is one of those yummy kinda plates.

Yelp
Nice local spot. Limited menu but what they have is yummy! I have only visited the Carlsbad location. There is another one in Oceanside

As soon as I heard that chef Davin Waite was opening a new restaurant, I knew it would have to be good, and it wasn't good, it was great. He has teamed with professional surfer Cheyne Magnusson to create a fun and inventive outpost for sustainably sourced fish, namely poke and tacos in Oceanside. You just place your order, get your number, and have the food brought out to you. You can even order a beer from Bottlecraft as they have a shared space. Yesterday we enjoyed a couple of the albacore fish tacos, gluten free poke and gluten free albacore aguachile- they were all fantastic.
