The Best Restaurants in Seattle’s University District | Eater Seattle

"A U District mainstay since the late 1980s, Shultzy’s is in its second generation of family ownership, and still serving the handmade bratwurst, andouille, and Italian sausages that made it famous (it was originally opened as Shultzy’s Sausage). They’re served in archetypal style on Amoroso rolls, but the bratwurst also makes an appearance as a German brat plate (sliced along with sauerkraut, sauteed purple cabbage, a tangy German style potato salad, and a warm Kaffeklatsch pretzel) that shouldn’t be missed. Elsewhere on the menu, sausage gumbo and a vegan option red beans and rice are satisfying renditions of Creole classics. At the bar, there are nine rotating taps featuring German beer styles, as well as the best spirits selection in the U District." - Mark DeJoy

The Best Restaurants & Bars In The University District

"Schultzy’s is a German pub that’s a little all over the place. There are sausage plates that come with creole gumbo, Philly-style cheesesteaks, and an atrociously strong drink known as “slamminade,” which tastes like life handed somebody lemons and a handle of cheap vodka. But after a night of drinking, there’s not much better than stumbling in for a big brat sandwich, and covering it with beer cheese and ranch. Wash it down with a slamminade." - aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley

Absolutely love it here. I’ve been coming here for around 3 years. Food is great and service is great. Shout out to Anna. She’s pretty much been my server every time I am here. Whether it’s me and a friend or me and a group, her service has been amazing.

Google
I got the Shultzy and it was delicious. Great ingredients and amazing fries! The atmosphere was pretty good too.

Google
Great sausage place. Their hamburgers are also good. Friendly staffs and very accommodating. I really liked their kale and lettuce salad. Good selections of drinks. They can accommodate a large group if you make a reservation ahead of time.

Blonde lady who worked Thursday night was a major bee eye t see h! Cheer up and live a little and learn some customer service it’s not that serious of a job get paid ur minimum and move on! Edit: my review is not unfounded the blond waitress was incredibly rude and short with us, maybe the owners should look into that instead!

Google
The food is solid, nothing exceptional but good flavor and very good portion sizes. The food comes out fast but you do have to order via QR code.

We visited this bar with our friends and our experience was great. Food, service, and price were really good. Waiters were very helpful and friendly. Definitely it's not my first time hanging out there.

Google
The last two reviews complaining about the service are total BS. I’ve been a regular here for years, and the waitresses know me by name. If I walked in and asked for my regular, they’d know what it is. Here’s a tip: don’t trust a review from a guy who thinks a waitress is rude because she “doesn’t smile”.

Google
Just stopped in to say hi to a friend but I was unprepared for how nice the place is. The staff is great! They've come a long way from the old days when you could try your skill at tossing a quarter into the pickle jar to win a free dog or sausage.

Yelp
We stumbled into Schultzy's because it was directly across the street from where we FINALLY found a place to park. We were originally going to Murphy's, but they didn't open until 4! What a great surprise! I had the French Dip and my boyfriend had a Ragin' Cajun sausage burger! Both sandwiches were very good, the French Fries were the skinny, crisp kind I like best, but the star of the afternoon was a fantastic margarita! A special shoutout to our waiter, Stanley S. He was attentive without hovering and made us feel like we were his only customers! Excellent service with an upbeat attitude! Thank you, Stanley! The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is very few reach perfection! This was an excellent lunch stop!

Yelp
Comfy German food and beer place in the U-district. Staff was quick to take my order and very nice. They have some high back booths if you're looking for a good place to have conversations with friends. Prices were a little above average for the Ave, but not outrageous.

Yelp
Shultzy's is a small bar located on the Ave (aka University Way) near the University of Washington. It's a German bar that serves many draft beers, German sausages, and other German fare. I came on a Thursday early evening and it was not super busy. There were TVs at the bar for sports games and the bartender was pretty attentive. Wells were $5.50 which weren't too bad. They're open late which makes for a great nightcap after a night out.

Yelp
Super disappointed - I have to agree with the other critical reviews on this place... THE STAFF IS WHAT RUIN THIS ESTABLISHMENT. Expect to be greeted with hostility and disrespect upon entering Shultzy's!!! Ordered some fries and a drink the other night and was minding my own business with a couple friends when the shorter waitress with black hair (wouldn't disclose her name when asked as I'm sure she expected a yelp review was in the works) who had been snappy from the get go began kicking us out!! I was shocked until coming on yelp, reading some other reviews, and learning that this is a trend! They really do exercise their right to refuse service to anyone for any reason... or even no reason at all!! Be warned! I think it is some sort of sick joke to these people. IPA selection is fine but nothing special. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I've warned my entire apartment building and all my coworkers against coming here as I wouldn't wish this type of treatment on my worst enemy. Not even mad. Just disappointed. The space was good enough with decent decor but super questionable TV placement. Tons of blind spots and almost like a joke to even put them up in the first place when half the tables in the joint would require you to face backwards or crank your neck completely sideways to even watch a game.

Yelp
Great place we found while visiting Seattle. Good food and generous servings. Staff is very friendly and accommodated our large group. We would absolutely visit again!

Yelp
Giving a 5 star, mainly because they serve Pliny the Elder on tap. It does not disappoint. Got some happy hour Seattle Dogs. They were ok, however, at 6.50 each happy hour hot dog, don't seem like a happy hour price like all other of there happy hour menu. But they do serve Pliny on tap, all that pretty much matters to me today.

Yelp
Nice location with a pretty decent deal on lunch with a drink at the time I came in - plenty of space inside. Ordering and paying was primarily through QR rather than off an actual real menu, which I wasn't a huge fan of, felt a little more tedious than it had to be. Hot dog and fries were decent, Moscow mule was passable, but the bun.... why are their buns like that?? Why not just use a normal hotdog bun from the store?? Their buns are so crazy gigantic and bland, it makes it harder to eat on multiple levels - it was very goofy. All in all, for a ~$10 lunch with a drink I wasn't disappointed but I definitely wasn't impressed.

Yelp
The burger was super delicious and quite filling. The bacon cheddar cheese steak was super delicious and i loved it a lot. The fries are small and crispy, definitely one of the best fries I've had. The ambience is really nice. Its not too loud and is pretty cozy for a bar/grill. I can talk to my friends at the table and still hear them. As for the service, i would say its poor-decent. My first time the waiter was really sweet and checked on us. However, as we left we noticed there was an extra $30 charge and went up to dispute it. Apparently, the waiter accidentally put 2 shots/drinks on our tab so it took us some time disputing that. Then there was issue with paying. The payment was not going through so we had to call the waiter to pay traditionally. The second time i visited, the waiter was okay checking up on us. There was once again another issue with paying. This time it logged me out and didn't allow me to pay so we had to call the waiter over so we can pay traditionally. When i signed the receipt and got ready to leave, i noticed they didn't give back my card. I had to go up and ask them for my card back. I cant imagine how much more annoyed i'd be leaving at 1am and realize my card wasn't with me. Also, they kept yelling or going to every table saying the grill will be closed and if you need to get anything then order now. Happened so much it got irritating so maybe if they can just do it once or had a thing in the app that notified you saying you cant order certain things past a time would be nice. The app/website to pay is so buggy and annoying to use, so if you aren't tech savvy you might struggle. As for the price, it's outrageously expensive for how much you get. You get barely half the size of a large hot dog for $16-17. I didn't order drinks but i heard the alcohol level is stronger, so i guess you'll be getting your money's worth. I would recommend this place if you are wanting to catch up with friends late at night and want to hear them speak without screaming. Besides that, I wouldn't come here to dine or get drinks casually in the daytime. Kind of expensive but if you dont mind that go for it! The food is yummy.

Yelp
Great atmosphere with attentive service and a comfortable noise level, but my friend and I were disappointed in their bratwurst: the sausage was small, dry, and musky but not fatty or umami. The bun was too big and dry and the sauerkraut barely had any flavor - we wanted a kick of vinegar. Coleslaw was average with scant mayo and flavor, but the shoestring fries were nicely crispy. As their #1 selling sausage burger, it was still an edible kind of good, but not delicious or worth the $16. Positive overall experience, negative food experience.

Yelp
Never left a Yelp review before. The food and drinks and setting of the restaurant are great. However, our party of 8 was at a table for the entire night constantly ordering food and drinks. 3 members of our party left then the hostess came to us and came in very hot and said that she was going to seat 3 random people at our table. We had to ask for a manager and they asked us to move to a smaller table. Our food that was on order before we were forced to move tables was mis delivered and took a very long time before we got it. It took over an hour just receive chicken tenders. The staff is what negatively impacts this place. Unfortunately, we won't be returning because of the staff's unfriendly service. Do not recommend.

Yelp
Perfect little German beer joint. For what it is, food is great. Not a fan of order from app systems though. Friendly food runners.

Yelp
Food isn't anything to write home about, but the location (vicinity and interior) is a strong reason to visit. Had an average experience, but overall positive. Great spot to hang with others and enjoy some drinks, food, or games being played on the screens. Service is solid though and the staff are extremely friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Shultzy's just reopened a few weeks ago since they shut due to COVID (last Tuesday iirc) so I'm sure they're still getting everything together. The hours here aren't quite accurate as I visited past10 PM, but they do have a limited menu as the kitchen is closed. Kitchen closes at either 9 or 10 PM. Before closing, they still serve fries, chicken tenders, and fried chicken for food options. Got to stop by after the reopening and will definitely look to visit earlier in the day for the rest of the menu, so expecting to adjust rating especially after everyone gets back into the swing of things. You can scan their QR code located at each table to order online. If you're with others, by scanning the same QR code, you can all add to the online order and then pay online too which is convenient. I've seen this at a few places recently, but it's not totally adopted yet so it was awesome to see that Shultzy's has offered this as an option. Arnold palmer was very standard, just lemonade and iced tea. I mean that's obvious but figured I'd mention it since I happened to take a picture. Fried chicken is juicy, these things are nicely fried and have a great crunch to them. You get one sauce for free and any more costs an extra 50 cents. You get about 9 pieces or so? They advertise it as a pound of wings.

Yelp
Pure perfection on the Ave in the U-District. Awesome pub grub, great service, charming decor and some of the best fries I've ever had. A must stop anytime I'm in the area - don't miss it!

Yelp
We were visiting Seattle and found this place to stop in for some cold refreshments. The staff was friendly and answered any questions we had about their beer selections and food items. They had a nice selection of German beers and also some local beers. They offer an afternoon happy hour for certain drinks and food items. The venue is pretty spacious inside and everything looked clean. I would definitely come back here if we were to visit the Seattle area again.

Yelp
Black bean burgers and fries are amazing here! Service is great as well! I visited multiple times while my dad was in the hospital nearby and I always received top notch service.

Yelp
Not the best place on the Ave But they have the best tots Kinda on the pricy side Service was so fire And the vibe felt white but was good

Evan J.

Yelp
Anna and the evening crew are awesome! Fantastic service and bartenders that always give you your money's worth!

Yelp
Paid $16 dollars for this. Self service with no menus. Jersey mikes sells a cheesesteak that is twice the size and much better and the people are cool. So you decide

Yelp
Nice place for a good beer & old school college vibe My favorite is sweet potato fried & lager or Hefeweizen or Pilsner So good So classic my go to place for light get together with friends

Cara S.

Yelp
If I could pick 0 stars, I would. Management is unyielding. Was treated very poorly upon my visit. The utter lack of respect was stunning. I would not return here if you paid me.

Jon ..

Yelp
This is a longtime favorite of mine. I've joked that I've been going here longer than the servers and bartenders have been alive but it is usually true. I don't live in Seattle and don't go to the u district often so this is usually a pre or post husky game visit. All the food is good but the game day menu is skinnier. I generally get the Chatalas which never disappoints. Fries are great and you can double up on them and skip the Cole slaw which is ok but small. Good beer selection with more German beers represented. They can get busy but service is always friendly

Kai H.

Yelp
Bartender banned me from the bar because I was a few bucks short on my tab once. The first time I ever went I was also short but was able to pay after a phone call to the bank, but he claimed I didn't pay that time. Even though I was a few dollars short once, he said it was twice and that it was a pattern. Do not go here, bartender is a liar and came up with a reason to kick me out. This was over a few dollars I couldn't pay on a $57 dollar tab.

Cara S.

Yelp
Horrible!!! Do NOT go here. The smug, condescending management banned me from the establishment because I mistakenly ordered one extra drink and they had to cover the $10. I came back to settle the $10 difference and they wouldn't accept my $10. Pathetic.
google avatar

Janna H.

Yelp
The happy hour food is great and the bratwursts remind me of Leavenworth. Since it's close to campus, there are a lot of students here for casual hangouts. The staffs were all very helpful and cooperative.
google avatar

Hebe L.

Yelp
Went there with my friend yesterday, she and I love it!! We went there during happy hour and ordered cheese fries, pretzel, and molten chocolate cake. All three of the food we ordered are very very good. (We don't know about the main dishes but yes please order their pretzels and fries!) I will definitely be back for these two! The environment is nice. The waiter is nice but he only come to our table once. There's QR code to scan on the table, you ordered it from your phone and pay it on your phone too!
google avatar

Shelby H.

Yelp
I enjoyed the experience overall - it's an old gem of a bar, adjacent to beautiful UW, that seems to have withstood the test of time. The staff were helpful in determining what items were/could be made vegan, and offered tasty beer recommendations! Would recommend for a casual night out.

Yelp
Fantastic food! I had the French dip and salad and the salad was fresh. The French dip was cooked just like I asked crispy. The waiter was great!

Sara N.

Yelp
I love this place. I've been going for years and years (many more to come). Food is always great, staff is always friendly, atmosphere is awesome everyday but especially gamedays. Can't wait to be back!

Timothy S.

Yelp
Rude service that did not recognize a real id ! Left without the drinks that were paid ! For having such a friendly name, i would avoid this lure even though my last name was Schultz before coming here. Thumbs double down, good way to spoil a good Saturday mood Shultzy

Adriana O.

Yelp
Terrible service. Rude bar tender. if I were you, find a better place This one is no good!

Oli S.

Yelp
Zero stars if I could. I am 24 years old with a legal CA license and they refused me service because my ID was bent. They didn't even bother to scan it and refused to serve me or my friends even though we are all of age. I was so excited about this bar and now I will be reporting to the police.

J S.

Yelp
First time here in a long time. I used to love this place and would watch baseball about once every week a year or two ago. Food was decent. I had the brat plate and the brat was average, but the saurkraut was, as always, very good. The beer selection was about what you would expect from a german place. Overall, not bad. The Kostritzer was a great beer, and they have had it forever. Not a lot of bars in Seattle carry it. However, you walk in and seat yourself. Then you wait. Then you are told to order online. No paper menu. You finish and then you checkout online yourself, which is clunky. There are no waiters, just food runners. You want another beer? Order online. Any deviation from the menu? Online. Regardless of whatever living you are here to escape, you now work as a waiter at Schultys. It's time to go, so you use the crappy third-party site to pay your bill. It automatically suggests a 22% gratuity. Who is this for? I sat myself, ordered myself, and cashed out myself. I am sure the staff are working hard running food, and the one staff member I spoke to seemed friendly enough. I feel sorry for the employees, as im sure they are getting screwed by this. To sum up: decent food, crappy experience as a customer. Is this a restaurant or a fast food place?

Claire M.

Yelp
The food and drinks were great! It was a nice place to watch the UW game. My buddies and I also like to hang out in the beer garden. The service was good and I would recommend!

Yelp
I must say that we were presently surprised with what we found at this place. If on the outside it seems like it may just be another dressed up hotdogs buns, but once inside we realize this is a legit German bar with a good beer selection and some really boss sausages. On Seahawk game days they have an all day happy hour which included some really good deals on a number of different dishes. They have self-proclaimed best fries in the world, and while that may be a bit of an overstatement, they were really good. They're more than happy to dress Them up with plenty of bacon and cheese if you like! My wife and I split the Currywurst as well as a standard Bratwurst. Both were quite good. Our kids shared a hotdog and some fries. As previously stated, the fries were actually delicious. Maybe not the best on earth, but certainly the best we've had in the last month or so. The beer selection here is pretty solid. Especially around Oktoberfest time, they have tons of different seasonal else with a focus on many from with in the state as well as a number from Germany. I'm not totally sure what I was expecting year, but this definitely exceeded what I thought we would find. Things were not overly expensive, the happy hour was solid and it was OK to be having a beer at 11:30 in the morning after walking a 5K with friends! Definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
WHITES ONLY? No problem with the food, but with the customer service. I came to pick up my order, and so I asked the waitress at the bar. She did not overtly say anything negative, but i felt she was being passive aggressive. Her solemn tone of voice, sullen facial expression, and lax posture made me feel she was annoyed at me for having approached her. When i said i came for a pick up, she asked "a pickle?" with a subtle hint of disgust. I felt she was taunting my pronunciation. When I said I had ordered with ubereats, she immediately asked me if I had called in my order, as if she was oblivious to what I said. She felt unforthcoming, and i felt very uncomfortable during the exchange. I noticed that the restaurant was predominantly western themed, and the patrons were mostly white, which made me suspect she was racist and thus why she treated me as such (im not white). it is just a hunch, but i dont really see any other reason. she didnt seem cranky before i talked to her. I almost never write restaurant reviews, but this experience scarred me a bit, and so i couldnt help but write about it. i honestly feel discouraged to come back again, and for a quick take out no less.

Yelp
I just want to say that the daytime server and bartender yesterday wednesday 8 are amazing and I hope that ownership gives them a giant holiday bonus and whatever shifts they want! I've come in with a group of classmates several times after exams and they have always been great. Usually our group is small but yesterday more of our class than usual decided to come out and celebrate the end of our exams - it was a larger crowd than a normal lunch time and several were celebrating extra hard. The drinks are great and the burgers and pretzels are awesome. Thanks for accommodating us!

Yelp
Great place near uw to watch sports, enjoy a beer and chow down on some sausages. They are family owned and put a lot of effort into running their business properly. Good has great flavor as well. Good college bar and eatery!
google avatar

Janel E.

Yelp
Homemade sausages for the win! Not to mention how they're served. Good beer and beautiful outdoor seating. The pretzels with beer cheese are perfect. Would Recommend and plan to go back.

William G.

Yelp
Bad service and bad food the only thing that was any kind okay about going was the off shift staff being kind and offering his seat then I think I over heard him being reprimanded for doing. So shout out to the blue haired kid that was just trying to be nice and helpful!
google avatar

Opal D.

Yelp
Strangely tasty... I really wasn't expecting a lot when I walked in because it's not a style of food I even like. I reluctantly ordered a sausage burger which came with a side of the "world's best fries"... I kind of hate them for claiming they're the world's best and then actually kind of delivering on it. I mean, they'd probably be better if they were covered in shaved truffles, but for a basic french fry, I gotta say I was actually impressed and am hard pressed to remember a better fry I've had anywhere in the world. Which is totally annoying, but I'll give credit where it is due. The sausage burger was tasty, not dry, yet not overly greasy. Service was good too, which is strange for "The Ave." They had TVs so you can watch the World Cup while eating.

Yelp
Walk a little further down the Ave. and right by the post office you'll find Shultzy's! It's bright yellow with big brown trimmed windows. Sometimes in the summer those windows are pushed opened, giving the tables by them a patio like feel without actually being outside. However if you do want actual outside seating in the back they have a covered area. It's a little crowded back there, I prefer the ones by the front! With all the sunlight coming through those windows in the summer, it makes this one of the brightest bar's I've been too which is really nice. All the natural light keeps this place and the staff upbeat and friendly. Also doesn't make you feel as bad for day drinking when you can enjoy the sun instead of hiding from it. Plus you're really able to take in the decorations that give off a truly German feel. Happy hour is from 3-6 on weekdays and all day Sundays. I recommend the Currywurst for a happy hour meal (comes with a ton of fries!) and the Moscow Mule for a drink (only 5.50 during the summertime). The only thing I don't like about the happy hour is that you can only get happy hour price on food if you buy a drink with it. So I always end up spending more than I want to. Also the prices here have gone up here quiet a bit since I first started coming here about 5 years ago. But not surprised since it's in a prime location and restaurants tend to turn over pretty fast on the Ave. I'm a sucker for German bars and this is by far my favorite one in the city of Seattle. If you're in the area definitely stop by.

Thomas M.

Yelp
the food is great, along with speedy service. the waiter was very nice and made sure we were good. definitely will go back if I'm back in town again.
google avatar

Yelp
The real appeal of Shultzy's is the quantity of food for the price....and lots of drink options that's especially convenient for UW students. The food is really nothing too special, though they do have an impressive list of options--from curly fries to cheesy tater tots! I came here for dinner with a group of friends and ordered the Bratwurst plate. I recommend this for anyone who wants a little bit of everything. The portions are HUGE. I mean it. The fries spill over your plate and there are even extra sides you can add too. The sausage itself was nothing out of this world, but it will satisfy your cravings for fries/burgers/sausages/late night food in general. My favorite thing about this place are the options of drinks. Their drink menu is pretty extensive, and there are even seasonal ones that are pretty good! I recommend the apple pie bourbon sweet tea for a fall drink. My friends and I also ordered the 'mystery shots,' which was really fun to try out. The service was attentive and helpful, which I really appreciated since I was in a group of about 14 people. Overall, good place to relax and grab a drink and some bar food with some friends. It's pretty spacious inside so you can definitely get seated with larger groups. I recommend looking through their drink selection and have some cheesy fries on the side!
google avatar

Jiwon C.

Yelp
I come here quite often with my co-workers after a late shift. Or just for some good hot dogs. They have the best fries and 5$ Moscow mules.. Wait did you hear that correctly? Yes. 5$ Moscow mules yuuuus. Their sausages, gumbo, fries, wings are all good and the staff is friendly and there's nothing terrible about this place. You go in and sit wherever you like unless the "please waited to be seated" sign is being shown.
google avatar

Jeremy W.

Yelp
Not what I would describe as "Authentic German Fare", but the food was really good in its own unique style. Great atmosphere and great service. Add that to the great food and you've got an all around great experience. The happy hour deals were a nice touch... highly recommended.

Yelp
We have been coming to Shultzys for 4 years now and it used to be one of our favorite burger places in the neighborhood and in Seattle. Unfortunately I have to say I'm not a big fan of the new menu. We've tried it out a few times since the change but the burgers just aren't as good. The cheesesteak seems exciting but it was a bit bland as well. I'm not sure why they changed the menu, but I can't say I like the change.

Yelp
Their fries are so good. I would go there again just to order them. I had the cajun sausage I believe it's called. It wasn't great. The sausage was on the dry side. The flavor was lacking, and the toppings did little to add to the flavor of the sausage as a whole. The coleslaw was also lacking flavor. It could've used any salt, pepper, maybe even some vinegar. The outside seating area was also a little cramped. It was shaded though so that's nice. It seemed like a cool place to chill when there's not a lot of people. If it was busy, I'd rather not. Bottomline, go for the fries. They're more than worth it.
