The Best Restaurants in Pasadena, California | Eater LA

"Quiet Green Street is home to one of Los Angeles’s most exciting new Sichuan restaurants. Chef Yong “Leo” Zhu trained in Chengdu for two decades before heading stateside to open Sichuan Street Food in Pasadena, which occupies a two-story building with a bustling kitchen. The menu includes popular dishes like dan dan mian, mapo tofu, twice-cooked pork belly, and stir-fried lamb with cumin, along with regional specialties like Mama’s pork trotter soup and bullfrog with Sichuan pepper and chiles." - Mona Holmes

Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: November 18 - Eater LA

"It’s hard to believe that some of Los Angeles’s most exciting Sichuan cooking hides on Pasadena’s idyllic Green Street alongside dental and chiropractic practices a stone’s throw from Pasadena City College. Here at Sichuan Street Food’s tiny, two-story walk-up, Chengdu-trained chef Yong “Leo” Zhu prepares the region’s greatest hits alongside deeper cuts made with bullfrogs and pig kidneys. My dining companion and I ordered some of our favorites like dan dan mian and twice-cooked pork, as well as the chef’s signature dishes, including boiled fish in rattan pepper and pig kidney salad. The twice-cooked pork was especially good with its balanced burn and long, thin strips. Also fantastic were the delicate kidneys prepared in a soy-based sauce along with plenty of fresh ginger and scallions. The kidneys’ supple and tender texture impressed me so much that I ate the leftovers just a few hours later." - Eater Staff

Sichuan is a province in SouthWest China, and their cuisine is known for bold and spicy flavors derived from garlic and chili. This spot provides very authentic sichuan food. The dishes are vibrant and spicy. We got tons of plates and loved them all. After ordering we saw other’s orders and had to add them. And it was the right call. We got the kung pow shrimp as spicy as they make it, and it was great! We got chicken with diced chilis, loved it! We got white rice, and dumplings with Napa cabbage and pork (included a great fish dip sauce), and both were excellent. We got the dry fried green beans and the twice cooked pork. Both excellent! The staff is awesome. Really above and beyond! They treat you like family. And they play close attention and go out of their way to make your experience special. The kitchen is there with you, and it’s awesome to watch the chefs/team make the delicious food. The atmosphere is amazing and vibrant. Matching the food! Parking is pretty easy in Green (one way) or on the side streets. Tons of great dessert options close too! Highly reco! Go early, they fill up fast! Too go seems like a great option too.

Pretty Good Authentic Sichuan Food. Worth coming back to. Would recommend the La Ji Ji Thousand Pepper Chicken and Garlic Chinese Leaf Lettuce. Though they are still trying to figure out the service.

Tiny restaurant serving big flavor, this place seems very authentic and the food is great. A nice option for lots of Chinese and Sichuanese classics. The chef cooks the food in a fiery wok with big flames. Not much seating but nice and cozy. They also tell you on the menu which dishes have Sichuan peppercorn so you can avoid if you don’t like the numbing spicy.

Very delicious food. Mapo tofu is highly recommended! I wish they had plum juice or a plum drink but otherwise amazing experience!

Finally, a spot in Pasadena where we can enjoy authentic Szechuan cuisine without trekking all the way to SGV! We've just tried this new restaurant, and I'm impressed with the variety and quality of dishes they offer. The service was on point too—bilingual servers made ordering a breeze, ensuring we knew exactly what we were getting. Great location, especially if you're around PCC and in the mood for some good authentic Chinese food. Will definitely visit again.

We stumbled upon this really great “street” Sichuan food and decided to wait in line with the rest of the crowd. The place is small, but definitely worth the wait in line. Even after we sat down and ate people were still waiting outside to order food and eat inside. My biggest complaint was all the plastic utensils you had to eat with. It really made the food taste horrible. You cannot eat soup with chopsticks. I’d gladly pay a few extra dollars and eat off of real silverware. Had it not been for the plastic garbage we had to use I would have given the place all 5 stars.

Google
I ordered spicy fish and double cooked pork. This Sichuan restaurant is truly authentic! The flavors are spot-on, bringing the taste of Sichuan right to the table. Portions are generous, and every dish is absolutely delicious. If you’re looking for a genuine taste of Sichuan cuisine with big portions, this is the place to go!”
