Yelp
This charming European-style eatery located in downtown Roanoke is one of my favorite restaurants there. It first opened its door on February 20th, 2020, and since then has been offering an intimate and upscale Gastropub experience. Last year I had the privilege of dining there for the first time on one of their Neighborhood Nights with a 3 course Menu Special. I invite you to go back and read that review as well and view my photographs complimenting it.
After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that it would be appropriate this year to go back to this restaurant and write a follow-up review, since my initial review was one of my reviews that contributed to me obtaining this highly esteemed Award.
So this Wednesday, when their Neighborhood Night 3 course Menu Special featured Gazpacho, a classic cold Spanish soup that originated in Andalusia, Spain, I decided to go dine there once more and do a follow-up review.
Andalusian cuisine, is deeply influenced by the region's rich history and diverse culinary traditions, reflecting the influences of its diverse past, including Moorish, Christian, and Jewish traditions. My deep Spanish roots with grandparents from both Asturian and Catalunyan ancestry, and having visited Spain and having had Gazpacho there, makes me very curious to try it here in Roanoke, Virginia, from the Chef of Sidecar Restaurant, that in the past has surprised me with samples of exquisite cuisines.
After making my reservation online for 5:00pm from my cellphone, I arrived on-time right as they opened the door and after another party of two entered right in front of me. The host graciously greeted me and after verifying my reservation took me to one of the booths right in front of the bar and handed me copies of the menus, including the one for their Neighborhood Night for this Wednesday. Soon after, my friendly server arrived and greeted me with a big smile and welcoming attitude. She helped me pick out a Mocktail to drink and took my order. The Neighborhood Night Menu included the Gazpacho small plate, the main entrée of Spanish Seafood Risotto with scallops, Prince Edward Island mussels, jumbo shrimp, roasted red peppers and peas. And for dessert, a Basque Cheesecake.
The ambiance of the place was very pleasant and relaxed and all the employees contributed to the friendly yet distinguish atmosphere of the restaurant. My server brought me my drink which was amazing. I should have known it would be because the name of the restaurant originated from the Sidecar Cocktail. This is a classic cocktail traditionally made with Cognac, an Orange liquor like Cointreau, and Lemon juice. The cocktail is said to be named after the motorcycle sidecar, either in reference to its origin story involving a regular patron of a bar who always arrived in a sidecar, or simply inspired by the vehicle's appearance.
Then a server assistant brought me the famous Gazpacho soup and two slices of a baguette toasted. The Gazpacho looked marvelous and when I put the first spoonful of it in my mouth it tasted like glory. What an amazing flavor. I had tasted genuine Gazpacho before, even in the land where it was originated but this one tasted like a Gourmet Gazpacho, a culinary masterpiece! Immediately when my server came by I sent my compliments to the Chef for creating the best Gazpacho that I have ever had with a flavor that I will never forget. Then came the main entrée: the Spanish Seafood Risotto. A picture is worth a thousand words. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review and see for yourselves the culinary work of art that I greatly enjoyed dining. And finally for the Grand Finale, the Basque Cheesecake made a sweet and delightful dessert to give closure to an extraordinary dining experience at a restaurant which is one of the Star City's greatest pride. Needless to say, if ever you're downtown, you should definitely try this restaurant out. It is one of those one of a kind gems which you can't describe but can admire through the beauty of its brilliance.
