New American spot with chic decor, cocktails & beer

"Tucked on a sleepy block of Summit Avenue in Capitol Hill, this easy-to-overlook restaurant greets you with a gorgeous marble wrap-around bar, moody lighting, and a fantastic, if amorphous, menu. Executive chef Antonio Palma’s cooking leans Italian but pulls inspiration from all over: while you scan the ever-changing menu, start with thick, airy focaccia (small $9, large $15) and don’t skimp on the umami-loaded, almost sweet black garlic butter. The big-plate star is the tender, juicy pork chop with seasonally changing sides — in winter, a delicate gochujang glace over a bed of creamy grits ($52). The cocktail list brims with creative flourishes, like walnut liquor in an Old Fashion for a nutty layer and a mezcal Negroni with a dose of spicy chile liquor (all cocktails are $16). Small enough that a big party might struggle, it’s exactly the right size for an intimate, romantic dinner. Parking in this part of the Hill can be brutal and public transportation isn’t super convenient; in a pinch, a few paid lots and garages sit a few blocks west along Broadway." - Harry Cheadle
"Single Shot is perfect if you want a last-minute dinner that feels like you actually put effort into planning it. They take reservations, the mirror-backed marble bar is beautiful, the small plates are great, and the servers are super friendly. You really can’t go wrong with sparkling wine and margherita flatbreads." - aimee rizzo
"Let us guess: your date wants to go “somewhere in Cap Hill where we can hear ourselves think.” Go ahead and forget about anything you were already planning - unless you were planning on Single Shot. This is a reliable, elegant date night pick where there will be a 0% chance of drunk hooligans spilling whiskey sours all over your pants. What you’ll find instead is a gorgeous bar, an excellent margherita flatbread, and plenty of more substantial things like roast chicken and steak, too." - aimee rizzo
"Last time you had a girls’ night, you went somewhere with drinks but no food, and spent the whole night distractedly thinking about pizza. This time, suggest Single Shot. The big marble bar is beautiful, and not only is there food - but the food is really good. Get some margherita flatbreads or a few of the seasonally rotating small plates, like salads and roasted vegetables, and everyone will be happy." - aimee rizzo
"So you moved to Capitol Hill, and your parents are concerned about “all of the chaos and loud people coming from that Unicorn place.” Show them that the Hill isn’t just a swarm of drunk humans plus the smell of hot dog carts wafting in the night. Single Shot is a very attractive space in a little corner of the neighborhood that’s far removed from the major nightlife intersections, and the menu has everything from seasonal small plates to fish and an excellent margherita flatbread with prosciutto." - aimee rizzo
