The Best Restaurants Open on Monday in New York City, According to Eater Editors

"The restaurant is helmed by chef Zhong Qing Wang, who got his start in cooking school in Sichuan’s capital and studied under several Sichuan master chefs. Wang opened his first Manhattan restaurant, La Vie en Szechuan, around 2008, later earned rave reviews from the New York Times, and closed during the pandemic. At this new spot, prepare to be wowed over dishes like century eggs with fresh green chiles or a green peppercorn fish stew." - Melissa McCart

18 Times Square Restaurants Where New Yorkers Actually Eat

"This exciting new Chinese restaurant comes from a highly praised NYC vet, Zhong Qing Wang, whose restaurant shuttered during the pandemic, with this one opening several months ago smack dab in Times Square earlier this year. The menu is vast and exciting; if the specials selection is too offal focused, veer toward preferred categories on the main menu, be it vegetables, seafood, poultry, pork, or noodles." - Robert Sietsema, Eater Staff

NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"Located in Hell’s Kitchen, near the Port Authority, Sky Pavilion is an ambitious-looking Sichuan restaurant founded by a chef from Chengdu, who once served Bernie Sanders (among other notable people). You can get things like sizzling pig’s brain in spicy sauce, “exquisite” duck heads, and nine kinds of fried rice, as well as “American” items, like General Tso’s and kung pao chicken." - will hartman

Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: May 20 - Eater NY

"Sky Pavilion serves a variety of Sichuan dishes, including unique options like scallion fried rice. The dish is fragrant, gingery, and bright green due to scallion paste, with scrambled egg adding substantiality." - Eater Staff

One of Manhattan’s Most Ambitious Sichuan Chefs Is Back in Business - Eater NY

"Sky Pavilion is one of the city’s most ambitious Sichuan restaurants, with a list of startling specials and a version of just about every Sichuan dish you can think of. The flavors are vivid and compelling, with organ meats such as pig brains and cow intestines. Chef Zhong Qing Wang, who trained in Sichuan’s capital, helms the restaurant. The food is elaborately presented, often on wooden or ceramic platforms. The restaurant offers dishes like green pepper and preserved eggs, Sky Pavilion-style pork intestines, braised whole fish with ground pork, tofu pudding in stone wok, and Zigong-style spicy rabbit." - Robert Sietsema

Phenomenal sichuan food - best I’ve had in Manhattan. Fresh fish & vegetables, chopped with finesse, customizable spicyness. Servers were very knowledgeable with keen attention to detail. I would go back for sichuan fix any day.

My complaint is the dishes were overall too salty! The peppercorn flavor was completely covered and should’ve been more savory and flavorful! The fish is quite fresh but the rabbit doesn’t taste like rabbit…. Ordered the combination of tofu and scallion rice that a lot of people recommended, good though not amazingly good. Overall great restaurant in great location but the overall flavors can be improved!

Likely the best Szechuan in NYC right now. Don’t let the location of this restaurant put you off. Admittedly I raised a skeptical eyebrow when I saw it was in the hell hole of 42nd street. Push through that gag reflex. The food here is awesome, expertly made and the portions are banquet style. Been back 3 times and each time it has slapped. Only critique is they need better printed menus some of the menus look like they were printed on dot matrix printers from the 90’s and very hard to read. But the food is amazing.

It’s amazing that this Szechuan Culinary restaurant even has its own private dining room. The menu and environment is totally unique. We enjoyed 12 dishes including crab, lobster, and abalone. I thought it might be expensive, it comes out the price is only $150 each person. It’s the most wonderful fine dining I had in New York.

Traditional Sichuan style food as well as American Chinese food offerings. The dandan noodles were so delicious that I'm still thinking about them!!! I asked our server what his favorite traditional beef dish was and he recommended the Beef with green chilies special...OMG it was so GOOOOOD!!!! We also ordered sesame chicken for our daughter who is not as adventurous, and she said it was the best she's ever had. Everything we saw being delivered to other tables looked just as good! The servers were very attentive and friendly. I can't wait to go back and try more things!!!

The best Szechuan cuisine in the area. Truly authentic flavor not “American style”. The CRISPY CHICKEN IN CRAB MEAT SAUC 蟹粉辣子鸡 is so innovative. My favorite is Boiled Fish with Green Peppercorns. Fish is so tender. I recommend anyone who wants real Chinese food!!

I loved and enjoyed my dinner experience here. The food was great. It was on the salty side for me, but it was me forgetting to ask for less salt. The people who work there are very nice and helpful. The restroom was small but clean. The restaurant was bright and spacious. We got stir fried snow pea sprouts, stir fried shredded pork, bean curd, and celery, and tea The pictures on the wall were worth checking out.

Amazing Sichuan food. Large portions and tons of flavor, and the presentation was nice. The ox tongue packed intense umami flavor, and the Chengdu duck soup was cleaner, but still very meaty. The waiters were very attentive.
