10 Black-Owned Barbecue Spots In Austin

"Slab has a few locations in Austin, and they all feature a loosely hip hop-themed menu—with names like the NOTORIOUS P.I.G. or the CHICKEN.W.A—that showcases barbecue styles from all across the country, mostly in sandwich form. Expect to find influences from Texas, South Carolina, Missouri, and Alabama in the sauces and preparations. We love the St. Louis-style pork ribs that get mopped in a sweet, spicy strawberry habanero glaze. And if you want a fun way to end your meal, make sure to order a banana pudding that comes topped with a sugar cookie in the shape of various hip hop artists. " - nicolai mccrary

Slab BBQ & Beer - Review - Sunset Valley - Austin - The Infatuation

"Slab BBQ has had three spots in the Austin area for a while now, including one off Research Blvd, one at Westgate Lanes, and another in Cedar Park. Now, they’ve opened their fourth location in Sunset Valley in South Austin, with the same loosely hip hop-themed menu (with things like the NOTORIOUS P.I.G. or the CHICKEN.W.A.) that showcases barbecue styles from all across the country, mostly in sandwich form. Of note: this is their first spot in a standalone building (the others are in strip malls and a bowling alley), complete with a patio and lots of outdoor seating." - Nicolai McCrary

I was at a Yelp event and at Antones Blues festival which had Slab BBQ! I was able to try Slab BBQ at both locations. I have to say it was one of the best BBQ sandwiches I have ever had! I ate that sandwich so fast. The meat was soft and so tender. The slaw in one of the sandwiches was unique and brought a form of texture that I never considered for a brisket sandwich. I will be back here soon to get more!

Google
10/10 place! Me and my boyfriend went to have a lunch at this food truck and we had an amazing time. The service was incredible. The food came out quick and it was delicious. We had the slider trio and That was enough for the two of us. We are definitely coming back for another bite!

Google
Nomadic is cool- good beer and staff The Slab food truck closes at 4 or 5 on Sundays- the brisket sandwhiches are copped brisket even if the photo shows otherwise. They staff is annoyed if you ask any questions or order not using the app and any beverages you should just order from the bar to save yourself having to show your receipt - its also cheaper at the bar.

I was happy and excited to order food, I walked up. The cashier she just stared at me. I had to say hi to her and introduce myself and ask for a menu. She looked at me very rudely. She was no help. I ordered my food. It was way overpriced the attitude and atmosphere totally killed it for me. I left that place in a worse mood than I arrived, the food taste fair I received my sandwich with no sausage. I ordered sausage. She argued with me and said that I didn’t.

The little girl leaking our order seemed bothered to have to interact with someone. When we tried to order, she didn't listen to our full order. When asked about the additional part of our order, she sighed and rolled her eyes. I asked for a receipt, and she didn't even ring it up. I won't be coming back because of her. She has a crap attitude. The food was good, though!

Third time I’ve been to the Brodie location and I am never going back! First time was great and I was excited about finding good bbq near my house. Second time I got the same thing and it was just okay. Today I wanted to try it again and got a chopped beef sandwich and a trio. The bread was stale on all four sandwiches and the meat was cold. Girl at the counter wasn’t friendly at all. She just handed me the bag and moved on. Say Hello? or Thank you! I just spent $35 on 4 really bad sliders. I’m bummed and still hungry because I had to throw most of my meal away.

Google
I've always had a good experience eating here and the outdoor, tree shaded area is a great place to eat. I recommend the brisket sandwich and the bowls. Glad to have them in the neighborhood.

Google
Well cooked ‘que. Never had a bad plate here. Very nice outdoor pasture area where dogs and kids are welcome to run free. Parking is difficult when they are busy. I recommend the brisket nachos, a meal in itself. #bbq #barbecue #barbeque

Yelp
Been back multiple times. Ribs w Strawberry and pepper (some hot pepper) jam is ...so ....so good. Get the jam covering ur ribs and ask for more. Everytime I drive by and can't eat there I say a prayer that I can return soon. Praise the Lord!!

Yelp
It's ahright. First time visiting this location but I've had SLAB a few times before. Not my fave BBQ in ATX but not the worst. It'll do in a pinch when drinking beer next door at Nomad. Had nachos (with pulled pork) and the notorious PIG. It's ahright. Nomad is probably responsible for 70% of this location's business.

Yelp
Baked beans yes - Cole slaw pass The bbq sandwiches were DELICIOUS and the south location is cozy and easy to get in and out quickly with a great meal

Yelp
Service was absolutely terrible, food was good but wow the lady taking orders was awful. Too many options in Austin for bbq. Won't be coming back.

Yelp
We went for their week special of $10 sandwich, side, and drink - but, unfortunately, the special was only for the pork (which, unfortunately, some people cannot eat). We ordered the brisket sandwich instead which was a bit pricier along with sides and drinks. Interestingly, the food is cooked outside in the truck, even though they have a brick and mortar to sit in. Service is order at the counter and bus yourself. There are so many great places for BBQ in Austin that Slab may need to do a bit more to stand out!

Yelp
The Slab location on Brodie Lane left out a bottle of sauce in my order before Thanksgiving. I called them, and they said that they would credit my card. That didn't happen. I called back about a week later, they said that they would credit my card, and again that did not happen. I like the food, but they stole my money.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place because we happen to be at Nomadic Outpost. We absolutely loved Slab BBQ, ordered some of their recommendations to share and would 100% be coming back! The McDowell was so good, super flavorful and highly recommend getting some hot sauce to add on! The Nachos were just as tasty with a generous amount of toppings! Can't recommend enough!

Yelp
Went to this new SLAB bbq location and was not disappointed. Right off Brodie lane, the new spot has a parking lot (but on a busy day parking will be limited). Plenty of outdoor shaded seating and a handful of indoor tables. This bbq spot is mainly known for their sandwiches. They don't list their smoked meats as options but you can get just their meat in half pound increments. We got .5 lb of their chicken, a donk sandwich (ridiculous but you kind of have to) and an o.g. Brisket sandwich. Service was really fast and honestly for the meat and serving size, worth the price. It's a great spot for quick, good, reasonably priced bbq. Drinks are available (non alcoholic) in the restaurant. Alcoholic bevies can be purchased at a nearby bar (attached via the outdoor seating area).

Yelp
First time ordering through Uber Eats. Tony Montana Sandwich was outstanding. Great flavor and generous. The banana pudding w/character cookie was delightful. Yum!!

Yelp
When can you say potential food poisoning waiting to happen. First time we have tried this location on Brodie, we have eaten at the 290 and the Westgate locations and never had a problem with food bring cold. I ordered the pull pork nacho and the pull pork was ice cold and the queso was lumpy cold. It was delivered straight from the window to our table so it hadn't been sitting on the counter waiting for pickup. My husband meat in his sandwich was cold as well so he pulled out the sausage that coated in cold grease. He stopped the girl we had ordered from and told her the good was cold; her remarks was shrugged shoulders and said oh well. Won't be back here again. Bowling Alley might be noisy but at least the food is hot. Only thing going for this location is getting your good fast but expect it to be cold.

Will C.

Yelp
The brisket is super dry, the ribs tasted like they were boiled, and the service was atrocious. She had her AirPod in the whole time and swore the sausage had 0 spice, and was completely wrong. I showed her the chili flakes in the sausage, sent the whole order back and will never return.

Yelp
We've tried Slab twice now, and I'd say it's worthy of keeping it in our rotation. We first had it via Uber Eats and I personally ordered the kids Daddy Mac with pulled pork and it was a generous portion and fabulous (enough for two meals for me). Unfortunately I'm not seeing it on the menu currently, so it'll be a huge bummer if they've eliminated that as a kids option. The second time trying Slab, we visited the new Brodie location. That atmosphere is wonderful, and the proximity to Nomadic Outpost is a perfect match. We ordered a half pound of pork ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. The ribs were very tender and flavorful--probably my fav of all that we ordered. My only critique of any of the meats is that while the brisket was fork-tender, it still was a bit on the drier side. We look forward to coming back and trying more of the menu...so many of the sandwiches sound decadent!

Yelp
First time getting delivery from the new location in Sunset Valley. Very fast delivery, hot and really good. A word of advice, if you ran El Jefe be prepared to take a shower afterwards!
google avatar

Yelp
Service was horrible & food quality was unacceptable. I expected more from a place I hear a lot good things about. Made my food very fast and it was cold.

Brian R.

Yelp
Got take out while at Nomadic next door. Ordered the El Jefe and added Fritos. The Fritos were not there. Too much of a hassle to go back over there to get them to correct it. How about just get it right the first time? It's not rocket surgery. There seems to be a theme in their reviews. BBQ was just OK....probably won't go back.

Yelp
I just ordered online and found that my order went to the wrong location. I wanted Cedar Park, but it ended up at this Brodie location. I've been calling their phone number every 30 seconds for the last 15 minutes and 90% of the time it goes to a "voicemail has not been set up. goodbye" message. But twice, I heard someone pick up the phone and slam it back down. There's no other way to contact this location. No email, no way to cancel the order. Unbelievably unprofessional. Reach out to me. I've got some words.

Yelp
I had tried going here a few weeks ago for dinner but they were sold out. I was happy to find out that they still had everything available on a Friday around 1pm for lunch. We got - McDowell rib sandwich 10/10 - chopped brisket sandwich 9/10 - Gouda Mac and cheese 11/10 - beans 7/10 - a little too sweet for me but still good - potato casserole 6/10 could have used more salt but the flavor was there Would definitely visit again! They have 4 sauces, all superb. Reg bbq, gold rush, Mayo based, and sriracha based

Yelp
Tried out this bbq on Brodie Ln. since it's so close to us. Got the chopped brisket sandwich, baked beans, potato salad, and Mac n cheese. The sandwich was great, the bun was buttery. Sides were all okay, mac n cheese being our favorite. Decently priced for bbq, food came out quick, plenty of parking. Will be back!

Yelp
Tonight my wife and i decided to try this location vs weetgate and both service and food were terrible! I let the person know that our food was room temperature and her response was Okay, and walked away. Never go back due to poor customer service Brodie location 1 star

Theresa H.

Yelp
Walked in about 11:15 am, place had just opened and said there was only one of the customer inside the place. The employee behind the counter didn't even stand up. He just kept looking at his screen, pointing to where the menu was pointing to where the drinks were, but just no energy from him. He said if we wanted a full service restaurant to go to the one on 183 this location is more like a food truck so we left .

Yelp
What a load of crap! I'm here at 11:05, they open at 11:00 and a sold out sign on the door! If you don't want to run a restaurant then close it! Poor customer service at its finest! Oh and no way to contact them on the phone! Way to many other great BBQ in Austin to beg someone to serve me! Don't waste your time like I did!!

Yelp
Came for the first time on Saturday during lunch and was not a fan. Ordered the OG chopped beef sandwich, coleslaw and sausage. First I would expect to have some sweet tea but not from a bottle that you can buy at store, unless you are buying beer or cocktails from brewery not many drink options. The sausage "link" I got was what felt like half or less just few slices and it was cold! The sandwich was so dry with just barely any barbecue sauce. I asked for extra pickles and onions and literally got like 3 pickles. One thing I did appreciate is the meat being lean and no fat mixed into it. The coleslaw was spicy and ok, found a random ingredient in it like a chip that didn't belong. The space outside is nice but I would honestly just go back to get drinks at brewery but not to eat. Overpriced, paid $40 for 2 people and I have had way better barbecue in Austin. Service was ok, only one person charging and getting the food while one person in the truck prepping food. Guy at the front didn't seem too happy.

Timothy M.

Yelp
The food I got tasted great only problem is I only got half my order. After getting home , we called, they didn't offer anything to make it right. This is now twice in a row, I would say shame on me for not checking the bag, but unfortunately I sent someone to pick it up and they didn't check. Coming from 25 year's background as a chef, they obviously don't train, don't manage. Or just don't give a sh$$ I'm opting all 3

Justin S.

Yelp
Have historically Liked this place over the years, but the last two attempts have been lackluster...the latest tonight when we ordered delivery and ended up with two of the meals missing major components...nachos didn't have queso and the cops and queso we ordered also did not have queso...called the location we ordered from, William cannon I believe, and was told that they agreed it was a big miss, but couldn't do anything about it unless I drive 45 minutes roundtrip to get it...asked to talk to a manager and was told they had no idea when one would be there, but probably on Monday...today is Friday... Some quality control and management of your crew and managers sounds like it got left behind when scaling the business.

Yelp
Walked in a full hour before they closed and the server casually walked in from outside after a few moments then just stood there as we asked if they were open. We asked if it was okay to order or if she would rather we order online and she said "it's up to you." I clarified by asking if we could order and she stood silent so we left. Odd experience, not the worst, and also made me decide there's enough good BBQ in Austin to never visit this place and never recommend it to a single person I know in any conversation.

Yelp
Ribs were delicious, but everything else was just so heavy. I normally relate on the sides, but there wasn't much option. I wish they had some sort of vegetable to even out the weight of everything. To be completely honest, I should've just gone bowling since this location was located in a bowling alley. I wanted to like SLAB a.k.a Slow, Low AND Banging, but it just ripped all out stomachs apart for few days we were in Austin. :(
google avatar

Judi B.

Yelp
SLAB BBQ is a one of a kind chain. The cute blonde cashier helped me decide my meal choice. He made the experience all the more worth while. Will be going again xx

Yelp
Food was delish! Maybe a little under-staffed, but they did a fine job. There was not many people there, but it seemed to be a steady stream.

Yelp
Slab BarBQue definitely took a few steps backwards on the opening of this particular location in a food trailer park on Brodie Lane . While I understand, Covid contributed to the closure of the much nicer place in Oak Hill, this one is many steps down. I was very excited to see the reopening of slab in the south Austin area but this is well below expectations. The building which appears to be a restaurant is actually quite small with limited seating and the food prep is all done outdoors from a trailer. Nothing wrong with food trailer trucks , but the set up of this particular location leaves a lot to be desired. They have an online app run by Toast for ordering ( which we used). There is also QR codes at the tables that you can scan to order. And apparently there is a small hostess stand inside that you can also order from. From what we could tell that would've been the best option because it seemed that was the best way for getting served. When we placed the online order, the toast app told us that the order would be ready within about 15 minutes specifically at 6:40 PM. However, we didn't actually get our food until 705. The toast app sent an email initially acknowledging the order stating that updates would come, however that did not happen. When one of us went to the trailer truck and asked about our order the server responded she was preparing it then and would bring it to us. .After waiting another 10 to 15 minutes I asked the same person and she rudely snapped she had called our name and brought the order inside. Needless to say we were sitting only 10 feet from the trailer and in the direct path she had to walk to get inside. In spite of all this she did not go and get our meals And we had to go into the bldg to retrieve it. Also to note no utensils were placed in the bags even though our meals required them. If I could revoke the tip I had previously given I would have done so.'. While the food was good, by the time we got there at 6:15 most items on the menu had been sold out, offering an extremely limited menu. They close at 8. While I believe this location still has potential, there are quite a few things that need to be fixed starting with some simple directions that explain the ordering process as well as better communications between the restaurant, the toast app, and the customer. And probably most importantly, educate the staff on good customer service and prompter service.

Ashley C.

Yelp
Good food and great playscape for kids. We enjoyed sitting out on the porch and will definitely be back!

B B.

Yelp
The people who work here are so rude, it's insane. Your food is mediocre (frozen Costco bbq is better), at least be cool. The brewery next door is legit and the folks there are so friendly! The old slab employees were so nice, so it sucks to come to this place and be treated so poorly. They were rude and disrespectful for no reason to my husband and I, but the final straw was when they were rude to our kids. Do better. I'd love for this place to be awesome and I'd never write this review based on the food alone, but the fact that they're always so incredibly rude to patrons really irks me. What a waste of money.

Reid S.

Yelp
When I'm eating my meal, I would love to you know have something to drink but apparently the college student worker who sat on his phone for 30 minutes had much better things to be doing than idk maybe filling up the water, cleaning around? Making the place not look like a pig stye? You know, over all doing the basic tasks of his job. Food is alright. Don't waste your money here. Whataburger is gonna offer you a better service and better food.

Dennis H.

Yelp
New bar b que joint on Brodie Ln has impressive pork ribs and beef brisket plus sandwiches and other bar b que casual entree. Parking area cramped and line can form but I was really impressed with their ribs and brisket. Recommended!
