The 16 Best Ice Cream Shops In San Francisco - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"At Smitten, they use liquid nitrogen to churn your ice cream to order—and the result is phenomenal, ultra-smooth ice cream. The cookie dough with pretzels and chocolate chips is our default order, and you can get your scoop topped with everything from chocolate syrup to cookie dough chunks. Make sure to ask about what seasonal flavors they have on rotation like their spicy honey and lavender earl grey with quinoa." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez, patrick wong

7 Fall Pastries For When "Pumpkin" Is Your Whole Personality

"The seasonal pumpkin spice ice cream at Smitten is just like all the other flavors—smooth and thick enough to use as hair gel. A scoop or two of the stuff is great, but the pumpkin spice sundae is why you should make a special stop at this Mission scoop shop. A generous drizzle of caramel sauce, spiced pepitas for a little saltiness, and a dollop of whipped cream complete the dessert. Break off the edges of the waffle cone bowl to use as edible spoons. If you can swing it, grab a seat on their parklet. " - ricky rodriguez, patrick wong, julia chen 1

The Best Ice Cream Flavors in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Smitten’s flavors are churned to order with liquid nitrogen, making for extremely smooth ice cream and a fun little show. Options like mint, olive oil, and honey chamomile rotate in and out of the lineup (typically just three flavors are available at any given time). But classic vanilla shows off the Smitten style best, and despite vanilla’s occasionally negative connotations, there’s nothing boring about it — in fact, it’s rather decadent." - Caleb Pershan

Google
Smitten in SF had some fun and unique flavors. We tried the mango cream and chocolate ganache—the ganache was a standout. Loved the waffle sundae option and cones too. It’s a cute post-dinner hangout spot with super friendly staff.

“Why, yes! I was Smitten by your ice cream. I absolutely loved it!🍦 Best one I had in years. Started with Salted Caramel and wanted to try something different but I just couldn’t! I had been looking forward to tasting it again since the first time I was here. Delicious ice cream 🍨 Excellent customer service. Clean Precise

Google
Small place but line goes fast. Each order is made fresh. Ice cream was decent. Unique how they make it in front of you with these machines.

Google
Best ice cream I’ve ever had. Freshly churned and absolutely delicious, which is why the line out the door was worth the wait.

Google
It's such a cute little place and came highly recommended by the locals, so of course it was a must try for us. And wow, the ice cream is made in the house, and it's so creamy, it's light, and it's fluffy, as if it's been whipped. I love the flavor and the texture of their ice cream, and they offer lots of different varieties of flavors. Make sure to try this out when you're in San Francisco.

Google
Expensive compared to all others ice cream places in SF and serving size are not what makes the difference. Flavors selection is limited to 4, or maybe 5, none of them being seasonal except the strawberry cream. The vanilla I had shows no sign of vanilla beans, suggesting the use of vanilla aroma, but surprisingly I could not quite tell it was vanilla I was having. The ice cream is sweet and rich but not flavorful. Overall very disappointing. You pay for the decor and expensive equipment that does not yield superior ice cream quality. As usual with consumer products, product excellence should come before marketing a cool concept. Unlikely to return.

Google
I tried the brookies & cream flavor, which was good, but not better than other ice creams I’ve had in San Francisco. The waffle cone was solid, and the service was good, with a pleasant atmosphere. The place had quite a few customers, which caught my attention, but I wouldn’t go out of my way just to visit. Overall, it’s a decent spot if you’re nearby, but not my top choice for ice cream in the city.

Mat Lit

Google
Ice cream was very smooth and creamy. Loved the chocolate ganache and the seasonal blood orange pomegranate.

Yelp
Walked by this establishment craving ice cream. They have a beautiful story and have been in SF for a while. Unfortunately my experience was not up to par with expectations. Their prices are extremely heft for what they offer. I did not think their ice cream was fresh or flavorful. I got one of their chocolate ice cream flavors. My experience could be a one off though my friends felt the same about their ice cream as well. I would love to give this place another try next time am in the area

Yelp
Yum yum yum! I came on a Saturday afternoon and there was no wait. I had never been here before so I didn't know what to expect. It's really cool on the inside with all of the machinery and decor. The music is fun too. I tried the roasted banana ice cream in a cone. It was absolutely delicious and probably one of the best scoops of ice cream I have ever had. The flavor was decadent and the texture was the perfect creaminess and firmness. The cone was good too and tasted kind of like a cookie.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick treat... super yummy! Got the flight with the earl grey, vanilla, pumpkin spice, and cookie dough. I found the pumpkin spice slightly too sweet for me, but would definitely give it a try if you're a fan of pumpkin spice! As a tea lover, I really enjoyed the earl grey with chocolate chips. It had a great strong tea flavor. I also really enjoyed the cookie dough-- the pretzels added a great texture and salt! Overall, all of the ice creams were rich & smooth... so delicious! They have both inside and outdoor seating.
google avatar

Yelp
The ice cream is churned by a machine after scoops are ordered which is very interesting. I got Cookie Dough w/ Pretzels & Chocolate Chips. Tasty flavor with sweet cream base and complimentary salted cookie dough and pretzels. It's super creamy, however I think because of the churning it makes the scoop melt faster It seems when there is a line there are no samples available. The interior has some seating but it's fairly crowded for a Friday night

Yelp
Smitten Ice Cream is located in San Francisco's Mission District and born from a desire to provide ice cream afficionados with fresh made-to-order ice cream. This mission then led to the construction of the patented Brrr machine, which utilizes liquid nitrogen to create smooth, rich, and delicious ice cream in 90 second flat (spoiler alert: that means you never have to wait long for your sweet treat). The storefront is on the modest side; however, it does boast both indoor and outdoor seating if you wanted to enjoy your ice cream in the area. Their flavors rotate seasonally, which means there's always going to be something new for you to try! We arrived at Smitten Ice Cream on Thursday evening looking for a post-dinner treat. There's wasn't a line at this hour, so we were able to walk up and place our orders easily without much wait. After a few moments of deliberation, we decided to get small scoops of both the brookies 'n cream and cookie dough with pretzels and chocolate chip flavors (the later of two in a waffle bowl). True to their promise, the ice cream was freshly prepared and ready in almost no-time. Both flavors were creamy, smooth, and absolutely delicious. The brookies 'n cream provided a smooth yet subtle chocolate flavor thanks to the brownies and cookies folded into the ice cream base. On the other hand, the cookie dough with pretzels and chocolate chips featured a malted brown sugar base with the aforementioned delicious mix-ins. If you're an ice cream fiend looking for some scrumptious made-to-order ice cream, then you should definitely add Smitten Ice Cream to your rotation!

Yelp
If you know me, you know I love ice cream. My favorite dessert on earth! So, as for someone who's an avid fan of ice cream, this actually passed my palette! Great ice cream (flavor, texture, amount) The staff were awesome! Very accomodating and happy. The vibe of the restaurant is phenomenal! Highly recommended!
google avatar

Yelp
Ice cream you scream, we all scream for ice cream!! Ambiance & service is phenomenal. And of course!! Duh the product itself was so yummy. * I got: - vegan fudge pop: made out of coconut and some other goodies and it was sooo good. I'm a biter when it comes to ice cream and this was the perfect pop to chomp! I'm running back soon!!
google avatar

Shirley W.

Yelp
I got the vanilla ice-cream and tried the earl grey. The ice-cream was very smooth but I felt like it could have been creamier especially the vanilla. The earl-grey was well flavored. I actually really enjoyed the waffle cone. It reminded me of animal crackers in the best of ways.
google avatar

Yelp
The fact that i can't get the Brookies & Cream flavor whenever i want because i was only visiting for the weekend and actually live 8 hours away will haunt me forever
google avatar

Yelp
Superior. Heavenly texture - whip-like, airy, creamy, and smooth. Not too sweet. I'll be dreaming of this ice cream.

Yelp
Amazing! I had Smitten's before but did not realize it was churned fresh. We were early for a drink meet-up and knew Smitten was down the street, so we opted to go get ice cream instead of getting a pre-drink. The store is so cool! They have the original prototype of the original machine and the story of Smitten. If you don't know it, you should look it up ;) Smitten uses liquid nitrogen to churn the ice cream after you order it. They have rotating flavors. I had "Cookie Dough with Pretzels and Chocolate Chips," and my partner had "Roasted Bananas." Both were delicious! Unfortunately, Smitten was the target of a break-in that included anti-Semitic language being sprayed on the interior. When Smitten reopened with the help of donations from the community, they launched "I Choose Love" and "Pillars of Love" campaigns. The I Choose Love campaign proceeds benefit the Courage Museum, which is an immersive experience that encourages visitors to imagine a world without violence, hate, and discrimination. The "Pillars of Love" allows you to take a heart-shaped sticky note and write something you love and put it on the pillars. It really adds to the whole vibe. There are plenty of seats inside and even a parkett where you can enjoy your ice cream. If you post a selfie with your ice cream and tag Smitten, you might even get a free scoop! Defiantly go check out Smitten!

Yelp
The ice cream is super-creamy, the flavors are rich and deep, the prices are reasonable, and the store is WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE!! The space is well-lit, the employees are polite and helpful, and there is a really cute outdoor parklet associated with this ice cream store that provides a place to enjoy your ice cream more safely, if you're among the Covid -cautious who prefer to mask indoors. My favorite flavor here is the chocolate ganache, which is very chocolatey without being too sweet! Smitten is family-friendly, a delicious place for a casual date, and the people-watching on Valencia Street from the parklet can't be beat! I highly recommend Smitten!

Yelp
Been here a couple times now... their ice cream is pretty creamy, but their flavors aren't as unique as other ice cream stores. The service is pretty fast. I haven't realy here during peak times so I wouldn't know how busy they get. Parking is a downside for sure.
google avatar

Renee T.

Yelp
Had a scoop of the pride month special: Lavender Grey Butterfly Tea Quinoa Crunch. It was unfortunately $7, BUT it was delicious. Would I come here again? Maybe if Garden Creamery is closed again. Still yummy.
google avatar

Denise C.

Yelp
There are at least 3 Smitten ice cream shops in San Francisco. I got a chocolate ice cream cone with waffle cone recently on Valencia. Ice cream makes the world a better place one scoop at a time. Ice cream once a day is better than sinking into oblivion. Ice cream USA! Asians love ice cream!
google avatar

Joey W.

Yelp
I remember when they used to be in a shipping container and now there are so many storefront locations. We came in and waited for a few minutes before the teen employees stopped talking to notice us. Brookies 'n cream - loved this take on the cookies and cream. The cone was a little hard so it didn't seem fresh. I'd probably get a cup instead. Pumpkin spice - if you love pumpkin things then this is what you should get. It wasn't too sweet and tasted like a creamy version of pumpkin pie filling.
google avatar

Mika G.

Yelp
You really can't go wrong with ice cream. I think my sis and I ate at 5 different ice cream shops the first day in SFO. This one was really cool bc you can see the whole process. I like that transparency, lol. The waffle bowl was fresh, the ice cream full of flavor and tastes as homemade as it is. So damn yum. I love ice cream.
google avatar

Dennis T.

Yelp
Not bad. Nice storefront, very cool to see the machines churning and the huge tank of liquid nitrogen in the back. Ice cream itself was pretty good but I'm not shouting from the rooftops - i got the banana flavor, my gf got cookies and cream which tasted more like chocolate. Overall pretty good but I'd opt to try somewhere new before returning to smittens.
google avatar

Victoria J.

Yelp
Delightful little ice cream shop- grabbed an ice cream flight with 4 flavors for $12, which is perfect to split among 3 people. Service was quick with plenty of seating inside and a view of the liquid nitrogen churning machines. Flavor choices are a little limited per single visit at 6 options but apparently rotate pretty often and get experimental! And the texture is incredibly smooth, clean, and not too sweet. The mocha valencia with citron was the unexpected star for my visit with its bright burst of fruit as a lingering after taste!
google avatar

Elena K.

Yelp
Friendly customer service. It's a bit pricey. Ice cream is very creamy and the apply spice caramel and whipped cream is delicious. Plenty of seating. Great people watching. Try it out!
google avatar

Gerard Y.

Yelp
Their store was vandalized a few weeks ago but they have re-opened tonight. I got 2 scoops of the Brookies and Cream which is my favorite Smitten ice cream flavor.
google avatar

Angelina Z.

Yelp
Every time I walk by Smitten I'm always drawn to how good the store smells. I really like that the ice cream is made fresh, too. I got a scoop of the salted pretzel cookie dough. I'm a huge fan of salty/sweet combos, and this was awesome. The ice cream was also super creamy. However, I was a bit disappointed at the overall lack of flavor. I'd say it was more like "vanilla with a hint of pretzel and cookie dough". For $6, the scoop size was kind of small. I'm happy I paid a visit, but I think next time I'd opt for a place with more flavor options.
google avatar

Ellen H.

Yelp
My oh my this ice cream is del-ice-ous. It's so creamy that it will put all your worries on ice for a bit. Living the cream. The hardest choice was picking what ice cream to go with, given I don't have flavorites. I ultimately decided to try out the milk and honey one which was legendairy. Friendly serv-ice. N-ice interior. Short wait time. I'll show myself out.
google avatar

Scotty L.

Yelp
Decent ice cream, chocolate seems to be the favorite here. A few indoor seating spots available. Service is quick and don't be shy about asking to try a flavor! Family friendly establishment.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
got cookie dough w pretzels & chocolate chips, the base was okay (a bit bland but at least not as sweet) but I loved the crunch from the mix ins
google avatar

Joriene M.

Yelp
Food (3/5 stars): Smitten isn't one of my go-to ice cream places in the Bay, but I still enjoyed it. I had the Milk & Honey and was surprised by the floral taste. I wish the ice cream was creamier though. I was also slightly underwhelmed by the waffle cone Experience (4/5 stars): * Price: a tad pricey * Wait Time: minimal on a Saturday night * Service: good and friendly * Ambiance: it's a modern and somewhat spacious ice cream shop
google avatar

Naomi C.

Yelp
I went in assuming that it was a "normal" ice cream shop, meaning that there were more than five to six flavors that were not "spicy" - meaning I've never had these before. I was told my a friend that the monthly flavors end - I am not sure about this since this is my first time here. I got a flavor with coconut, and something else, it was a white-ish tan color. It won't be much help to tell you what it is since the flavor is probably going to be gone. It was okay. I don't think it was a spectacle nor do I think it stood out. The flavors were unique but the execution was mid.

Kim D.

Yelp
We ordered 2 single scoops with a waffle for $22. This was pretty expensive compared to other ice cream spots in SF. When we tried the waffle, we were convinced that they forgot to put sugar in the batter. It was terrible. Ice cream though was good and had nice consistency and flavor. Service and ambience was just fine, nothing exceptional.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
The ice cream was delicious! A little icier and more milk-like than most ice cream places which is what I prefer. The earl gray had refreshing tea & bergamot flavor without being overpowering and was nicely balanced with the chocolate chunks. The strawberry could use a bit more strawberry flavor. Together with the sweet waffle cone was a little too sweet for me. I got a double in a waffle cone for about $10. The store could've been a little cleaner, the tables were dirty when we sat down.
google avatar

Hilda C.

Yelp
Great service, clean, and the best ice cream! We got the Brookies and Cream in a waffle bowl 10/10. Not too sweet yet great flavor!
google avatar

Jimmy C.

Yelp
Best churned ice cream on a Brrr-fect summer day! Every flavor was absolutely fresher based on using liquid nitrogen through the BRRR machines. And it's best to eat ice cream while it's nice and fluffy (never stone cold). I'm glad Smitten's was around before and after Chocolate Chair in J-town once had opened for business. Dragon's Breath, its most popular frozen treat, had been an amazing sight to behold! I'm sure history will repeat itself sometime in the future for a puffy cereal treat. Yesterday evening, I was having double scoops of strawberry cream on a waffle cone. Clover's cow milk, that's fine. Hopefully, there's a nut milk alternative instead of a chocolate covered vegan-sicle. Smitten's won't twice as shy away from the spotlight. But Xanath (Vanilla) Ice Cream on the opposite side of Valencia will forever be my most favorite ice cream parlor... only if it opens for business once again. Let's hope Smitten's future is brighterrr.
google avatar

Lily C.

Yelp
I love the concept of liquid nitrogen Icecream but there isn't but flavor selection. Honestly, I came into the shop because of the homemade waffle smell - it was so irresistible. I was really disappointed by it. felt like it had been sitting there for a while - it was not crunchy at all.
google avatar

Adam D.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream and great flavors! Extra love to Anthony who gave us unbelievable service! Great spot!!
google avatar

Audra H.

Yelp
Uuumm okay...we had the vanilla, kinda just tasted like cream ice cream, actually no vanilla flavor at all! And we had the brookies and cream, the flavor was better but not flavorful. The brownie inside was tasty. The individual that helped us was friendly, explained how the process worked AND has amazing red hair! Waffle cone was decent. But not sure I'd return. Too many other options in the city.
google avatar

Fahim L.

Yelp
While visiting San Francisco, I went to Smitten Ice Cream. Having the ice cream here was one of my favourite highlights of my trip to California! I got the Brookies 'N Cream and Chocolate Ganache flavours in their House-Made Waffle Bowl. I absolutely loved the chunks of brownies and cookies in the Brookies 'N Cream flavour, especially the big chunks! I also loved the strong and rich flavour of chocolate in the Chocolate Ganache flavour. Their Home-Made Waffle Bowl was just amazing! It was quite strong and thick and held the ice cream scoops without breaking down at all, but it also wasn't very hard and it was quite flavourful. It's also really cool how they make the ice cream fresh right in front of you. Every order is made fresh using the ingredients for the ice cream and liquid nitrogen right in front of you in approximately 90 seconds, which I think is amazing. I am so glad that I came here, and I really enjoyed both the ice creams and the waffle bowl!
google avatar

Brunella C.

Yelp
I was in the neighborhood with friends and one suggested to go to this place. This was my first time here and it was a nice experience. It was a cold Saturday afternoon. The place was quite empty. I had a scoop of the honey ice cream. It was creamy and the touch of cinnamon was perfect BUT it was too sweet for me (and I'm used to eat very sweet desserts). As someone that prefers gelato, it was too much sugar but if you're craving something sweet, is a good option.
google avatar

Carrie L.

Yelp
Decent ice cream but definitely not a traditional ice cream joint! It's very creamy and it is definitely tasty, just not my favorite. If you're in the area, definitely check it out, but I wouldn't go out of my way for this.
google avatar

Teo C.

Yelp
Literally the best mint chip ice cream I've ever had. No hyperbole. I'm usually able to control my impulses, but this is just so freaking good. Beware
google avatar

Alice Z.

Yelp
Food (4/5): I got the brookies n' cream flavor (brownie and cookies), and while it tasted more like normal cookies n' cream than brownies, it was still delicious! I love how soft the ice cream was. Service (5/5): Since the ice cream is fresh churned, getting your ice cream takes slightly longer than normal ice cream shops, but I didn't really mind! Ambiance (4.5/5): Nothing much to comment here! Overall (4.5/5): The flavor options were more limited than other ice cream shops I've been to, but I enjoyed how soft the ice cream is!
google avatar

Jeane T.

Yelp
Smitten's ice cream is one of the best! Cool flavors to choose from. The Earl grey is one of my favs. I also tried the pretzel one, so good! Service is good, they are friendly. I love the red theme of the store. I try to go here every time I'm in the city

Sam O.

Yelp
It's one of those nitro places where they freeze it when you order. I may not like brown sugar based stuff ice cream, but I found the brookie one quite uninspiring and could barely taste the brownie. The pretzel one was vanilla based and better, but still I tasted little chip flavor and left most of it as a waste of calories. The kid who served me was super chipper. To be fair, I should have ignored the best ice cream lists and stuck with my no under four stars on Yelp rule , so It's my own fault.
google avatar

Sona J.

Yelp
Came here with a few friends on a Saturday evening! We shared the salted caramel ice cream - it was really flavorful and delicious! They didn't have as many flavor options as I expected (only a handful), but they seem to do each flavor really well. The staff was friendly and there's plenty of seating inside - it's definitely worth stopping by!
google avatar

G O.

Yelp
The Brookies and Cream tastes great. The waffle bowl was amazing! I just wish it wasn't so expensive
google avatar

Mister L.

Yelp
Dont skip a visit to Smitten if you visit SF. This is the best place for locals, also a great experience as you see how they make the ice cream, makes it a great visit. They have changing flavors, so everytime you are sure to get some amazing new things to try (or some classic). No visit to SF is complete without us visting Smitten.
google avatar

Joanne D.

Yelp
Smoothest ice cream I've ever tasted! Speedy service. Limited seating, but ice cream tastes good anytime of the day especially for dinner!!!
google avatar

Helen K.

Yelp
There are only 6 flavors here and I ordered the Candy Bar in a small cup ($6). The Candy Bar is "Sweet shredded coconut and chocolate chips folded into almond cream." The ice cream is super fluffy and soft and just melts in your mouth. I'm not sure if I ever had ice cream like this before. However, the flavor itself was just ok to me. I would come back and try a different flavor.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
$9 for a single scoop of ice cream in a waffle come. I thought when I paid that much that there would at least be some packed into the cone. No. Just a single scoop sitting on top of a waffle cone. The ice cream is nothing special. Not worth it. Never again.

Mike D.

Yelp
Came in on Saturday night on on 10/5/24 at 9:30 and they said they were closed when it clearly stated you at 10:30. You guys might work on the operational aspects of business with something as simple as your closing hours.

Ari E.

Yelp
Brought my mom for dessert after dinner. Me: hi, how's it going? Female Smitten employee: *doesn't even look up and then stares* ..what do you want? So we left. Not sure if they were having a bad night or don't like Asian customers or both, it didn't matter how good the ice cream is at that point. Happy international women's day.
