Smoke & Salt - Review - Brixton - London - The Infatuation

"Hipsters are a confused bunch. For years, they’ve wilfully ignored the blatant fact that the longboard is an ineffective means of transportation. They’re also using an ever increasing number of products with which to sustain their facial hair. It’s a beard. If you’re trying the caveman look, just leave it alone for fuck’s sake. The latest induction into their mystical culture of calf tattoos and odd socks? Tiny restaurants. To regular law-abiding people, a restaurant in which you’re offered less space than you would at your own kitchen table would feel unfair. But to the hipster, it seems the more uncomfortable, the better. “Oh Atticus, have you tried that new Red Onion Ash pop up in the car park of Haggerston Recycling Centre? The plates are made from old Pepsi Max cans!” We do owe some gratitude to Atticus and his crew though. For without this particular hipsterism, London wouldn’t be blessed with the vibrant communal eating spaces or quality street food markets it now is. Nor would it have so been so kind to some of our favourites - Hoppers, Bao, Gunpowder, all adorably tight spaces. So provided the food is up to scratch, we’re happy to squeeze in, even if it does mean we finish the meal with a dead leg and a new friend we didn’t want. This brings us to Smoke And Salt, the latest residency to take over one of the tiny repurposed shipping containers at Pop Brixton. And they’re performing kitchen aerobics in more ways than one. photo credit: Remi Williams In addition to a restrictive space, Smoke and Salt also takes a somewhat restrictive approach to their cooking, by using the ‘ancient’ techniques of smoking, curing and preserving to prepare their food. They take British ingredients and prepare them slowly and deliberately - the prep calendar is portioned up in days rather than hours. And then they tend to chargrill them, and top them with things like truffle ponzu and jalapeno salsa. The result is a small selection of interesting, and occasionally excellent dishes, all at reasonable prices. The menu changes pretty frequently, but you can expect to eat things like an outstanding chicken leg that was brined for hours before being scorched, or a simple plate of tomatoes that’s better than you’d expect it to be. Not everything’s perfect - our pork belly was a little overdone, and a few dishes are skippable - but there’s enough good happening here to make it worth a visit. The menu is small, so it’s hard to gauge whether Smoke and Salt have what it takes for a move to Soho or similar, but they’re certainly going about it the right way. This place feels a little like a test kitchen, and we can easily picture Smoke and Salt joining Kricket and co. in the future. But if prep time has any bearing on how long we’ll have to wait for that, it could be one for the grandchildren. Maybe bigger restaurants will be cool by then. Food Rundown Sourdough with Whipped Butter Good bread. Light airy fluffy butter. Get it already. New Potatoes With Wiltshire Beef The best thing on the menu. The gorgonzola and chimichurri are perfect together and the optional add-on of chewy Wilshire beef takes it to the next level. Don’t order it without the beef. Chalkstream Trout Served with sriracha and jalapeño salsa, the trout is a nice dish worth ordering. It’s spicy and fresh thanks to big chunks of chilli and lots of watercress. Chicken Leg A truly brilliant dish. The chicken is juicy and tender and full of big flavours thanks to a truffle ponzu and daikon slaw. This is a dish we hope is here to stay and a really memorable plate of food. Summer Tomato Salad When was the last time you were surprised by a tomato? Exactly. Get these. Runner Beans These are perfectly grilled and are accompanied by a strong garlic aioli. It works, but it’s still runner beans. If you’re going to leave something off your starter order, make it this. Merguez Tartare Even if there was room to jump for joy in here, you wouldn’t want to for this one. It’s not as tasty as it sounds or looks. Hispi Cabbage With the smoked tofu and pickled peanuts, we thought they were trying a little hard on this one. It’s not bad, but not a must-order. Pork Belly This did not melt in the mouth. It was overcooked, which for somewhere like Smoke and Salt is such a shame." - Sam Collins

Smoke & Salt

"This friendly neighbourhood restaurant started as a supper club before evolving into a pop-up and then settling in Tooting High St. As its name suggests, the kitchen embraces the time-honoured techniques of smoking, curing and pickling, with seasonally-inspired small plates designed for sharing." - Michelin Inspector

I’ve walked past this place for ages, but only taken the leap and booked a table. What a fabulous restaurant, the whole experience was fantastic. The staff were lovely, friendly, happy, and very very proud of Smoke & Salt! The food was equisite, we went for the “Culture” testing menu - one was vegan and both menu’s were amazing. My favourite was the Leek Sabzi & the Beef while the Vegan stand out was the Celeriac. 100% recommended. This place is a gem and it adds to the fabric of Tooting. Very pleased, will be bringing others to enjoy the experience.

The seven-course menu was enjoyable overall – the food was well thought out and the presentation was excellent. Service was top-notch, with staff attentive and professional throughout. While the food was good, it didn’t entirely blow me away, and the price felt a bit on the higher side for what was offered. Still, it’s worth a visit for the experience and attention to detail in both the atmosphere and service.

This place is fantastic! Such care for food - thoughtful complex menus served by people who are friendly and passionate. I have food allergies and they are always brilliant with them - making adaptations easily and always coming up with alternatives to dishes which feel thought through. Really good! Would be great to see it a bit busier … People are missing out!

Went for a cheeky date night to try out the drinks and sample some of the bar plates — and it was impressive! I enjoyed every bite, the sourdough rare-bit and the door nail beef skewers were to die for. Can’t wait to come back and try the tasting menu. Remi was also lovely — it’s always a special touch when chefs take the time to speak to guests. Kudos to Chef Remi and the team!

Not usually a fan of modern British cuisine but the food here is amazing. From the starters to the dessert, everything was very carefully prepared. Flavours and textures were on point, and quality of the ingredients was great. Will definitely be back!

Both times I've been here have been wonderful experiences. The tasting menu is amazing; the chefs use really fresh ingredients, and each dish is beautifully crafted. The cocktails are fantastic, and the service is exceptional. I'd 100% recommend this place, especially for a special occasion.

We came with our newborn and got excellent service from start to finish. With a bit of notice the team sorted a mobile changing station, gave us a great table with space for our pram, and were generally super attentive throughout. Food was also lovely and just the right amount. Overall definitely recommend for a nice dinner in Tooting.

Had an excellent meal here last week - highly recommend the six course sharing menu, even with wine pairings it’s very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. The menu changes and is set but we had the pea and bean dip, bread and butter, crispy plantain, smoked trout, tempura courgettes (maybe the best course), smoked chicken and crispy potatoes, and namelaka. My partner is gluten intolerant which I made the restaurant aware of before our visit and they were really good at providing gluten free alternatives where necessary. Generally, service was excellent throughout with descriptions of each course and glass of wine. Overall the experience was great and would definitely return.
