NYC’s New Restaurant Openings - New York - The Infatuation

"The latest outpost of Smør is now open in Williamsburg, and it’s a little different from both the original Scandinavian bakery in the East Village and the all-day cafe version in Clinton Hill. The new sibling is both a recipe R&D lab for the brand (to achieve new innovations in prinsesstårta technology), and a counter-service spot with pastries, breads, breakfast burritos, seasonal quiches, and more." - will hartman, willa moore, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah, bryan kim

The Hottest Bakeries in New York City

"Bread and pastries were a welcome addition to any regular Smør order that it seemed like only a matter of time for the team behind the laid-back Scandinavian restaurant to expand those sections of the menu into its own full-blown business. Head to Smør’s next-door bakery to load up on hearty loaves of rugbrod, fragrant cardamom buns, fluffy egg sandwiches, and piled-high toasts. Another outpost of Smør — larger — is now open in Clinton Hill." - Eater Staff

Google
Breakfast sandwich was really great, it was huge. Egg was really fluffy and avocado spread and sauce was really tasty. Coffee was also great and well balanced with bread. I am not big fan of cardamom flavor but cardamom bread was still good, I enjoyed. It was very moist inside.

Tito

Google
Ordered the cardamom bun, loaded focaccia, salmon sandwich. All were great. Busy but still easy to get seating inside, outside in the sun is a bit tougher. Coffee’s good and they’re making the bread fresh right behind the counter. Great for a quick bite

Google
Bustling, delish Scandinavian bakery / breakfast sandwich shop! Really wholesome morning vibes. Some outdoor seating. Very good drip coffee ($2.75), danish, buns (cardamom and cinnamon). The breakfast sandwich was 4/5 good. The egg and avocado and cheese was fresh, but the brioche bun kinda tasted old / dry. The focaccia looked scrumptious though. I’ve gotten the iced lattes and they are pretty good. I’d come back to try a salmon / focaccia combo, cardamom bun, seasonal danish and some of their other baked treats. Huge vibe though. Line moves fast They have a sister restaurant next door They make the bread in front of you!

Google
I chose the cardamom bun. Not a lot of options. But the bun is very good. Tender, rich and very fragrant. Also only 4.75 w/ tax. Customer before me asked about the prices of the items in the case. The employee didn’t know the prices and had to plug it in to the register to tell her. I personally don’t like that. I want to know what I’m paying and I don’t want the price to change depending on when I visit ect…

Google
The food was absolutely delicious! I also tried a cucumber cocktail, it looked great, but it wasn’t really my taste since it was quite bitter. The location is also really nice. We sat outside and the atmosphere was very relaxing. I had a great time overall and would definitely come back again!

Google
The egg & cheese sandwich is pure melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. Already thinking about when I can go back & get it again. I went in the early afternoon on a week day and there was no wait or order or sit down, but I can imagine this place gets busy.

Google
Breakfast sandwich was delicious. The sauce and avocado spread added much flavor to it. The size was pretty big; we were full after finishing one each. We also enjoyed the cardamom bun. It had a perfect balance of flavor and texture.

Google
I was looking for a cafe in this area, found this place and saw some pictures of the cardamom bun, and was sold. The shop was a lot smaller than I expected and was packed, but I was able to get one of the tables outside. The cardamom bun was as good as it looked, very soft, a little buttery, and pleasantly strong on the cardamom. I got a decaf cardamom latte to go with, which was also great, very smooth and just barely sweet. Wonderful start to my morning.

Yelp
Cute spot! Bakery where a lot of their goods are also made here. Good choices of scones, pastries, and cookies. Coffee very reasonably priced with a latte at $4.50.

Yelp
I saw this place on tiktok and was excited to try it. Came here and got a sausage roll which is what people usually recommend. Service was terrible, I stood there for awhile before anyone even acknowledged me. Two people were standing in the back one girl was on her phone. She looked up at me and didn't say anything and kept talking to the other guy. I got a sausage roll it says served with mustard and ketchup which it did not. It was cold, hard and just plain terrible.

Yelp
I popped over to Smør to meet a friend for coffee and a treat. The bakery is a great spot to sit and enjoy a casual bite and a nice coffee. There's a good amount of seating for such a small space with natural light and a good atmosphere. I decided to get an iced latte and an open faced tuna sandwich. I'm a big tuna sandwich fan (especially any option that does not include celery). This one is served on top of sliced sourdough with lettuce, corn, bell pepper, red onion, and dill. It was very good, but not a resounding favorite. It was a bit messy to eat, and I think it had a few too many ingredients. Still a tasty lunch that I wouldn't hesitate to order again.

Yelp
Best cardamom bun in the city. You can't have a bad pastry here, all of it is baked fresh, including their bread loaves. East village was pretty dead on a Friday morning but then I walked past smor and it was packed!! Their brunch items including their avo toast and eggs are also delicious but definitely come for a coffee and a pastry!

Yelp
What a great little coffee shop! After enjoying a dinner at Smorgasbord we decided to visit the bakery for breakfast. It's fairly but has seats inside and out (not sure if there's a restroom?), service is at the counter. They have a range of pastries and sandwiches and coffee etc. The coffee is great, strong but smooth and the pastries are fantastic. We had a seasonal donut and a Cardamom Bun. The bun was less doughy than others I have had previously- it had more of a heavy croissant like texture. It was however delicious with a good hit of Cardamom. Staff are friendly, the cafe is light and bright, there's a small variety of groceries to buy (condiments, canned fish etc) and prices are reasonable.

Yelp
Sneaky Smør! . This sneaky bakery tucked away between 1st ave and Ave A has fresh made baked goods with a bit of a Scandinavian twist. This is not your average bakery. Everything here is super fresh and they are constantly making fresh baked goods. . This place has been added to my coffee and sweet/savory pastry rotation. . In short: - Great baked goods and coffee! - I'll be back

Yelp
I just reviewed their sit down eatery next door, where I enjoyed soup, salad, and an everything bowl with nova and toast, but the cardamom bun I enjoyed here at their bakery left me with a lasting impression. Previously I've said La Cabra's cardamom bun was my favorite in the city, but Smor's version can definitely compete. Smor's is a bit fluffier, which makes it feel like there's more of it to enjoy, and I'm into that. It's not overly sweet or greasy, and it is phenomenal with one of their delicious coffees. Writing this review reminds me I should stop in more often!

Yelp
Cute scandinavian bakery in east village that has an amazing breakfast sandwich. The sausage egg and cheese sandwich was huge with a delicious tarragon aioli. Space is a little small but there are a few seats and inside and outside for you to enjoy your food or do some work. Service was quick and sandwich was piping hot when I got it. Will be going back to try their baked goods!
google avatar

Yelp
What a fantastic, casual, delicious place! We ate outside, as tables were also available. The food was delicious and very reasonable. I ate the A.E.C., which was so much on one sandwich. Others ordered a few of the Yogurt and Granola. We also had cinnamon buns to share, which we all enjoyed. We will definitely come back again soon.
google avatar

Rachel L.

Yelp
The scallion cheddar scone is absolutely unmatched. I drop in before i hop on the L to work and it just hits the spot everytime. Sometimes the people at the counter will make you wait for a minute while they chat with their friends who come to visit, but the food is good enough to make up for it.

Yelp
Kannenbullar are now ubiquitous in the US but I do love it when I get a great one. Smør's buns are excellent and I definitely enjoyed having this bakery nearby on my last stay.
google avatar

Israt A.

Yelp
Love the tinned fish wall, scallion cheddar scone, and cinnamon bun(a tiny bit more than la cabra's) Lots of dogs frequent this cafe. It's a little confusing because the Smor restaurant is right next door and has more of an expanded menu. A few tables inside and out. Would definitely come back
google avatar

Yelp
came on a Thursday morning to try their famed cardamom bun and it did not disappoint! powerful cardamom flavor and I have not had anything like it before! soft, chewy and so yummy.
google avatar

Mona A.

Yelp
The most beautifully crafted cardamom bun. I've tried nearly every cardamom bun in the city, and can easily say this is my favorite. The cardamom latte is also amazing, I will be going back.
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
Not too sweet, with a perfect hit of cardamom! And their seeded sourdough smells so good. We heard talk about this bakery and made sure to hit it up before heading back to LA!
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
I really wanted to try the sausage roll, but it was sold out around 1pm on a Wednesday. I ended up trying the cardamom bun and a scallion cheddar scone. The cardamom bun very heavy on cardamom, a little less sweet than La Cabra's, but it was more dense. Scallion cheddar scone was fluffy on the inside and had a good crust outside and had so much scallion flavor packed into it. It was delicious.
google avatar

Alissa S.

Yelp
Came here again, and while the sandwiches and pastries were good the chai latte was terrible. It was probably one of the worst I had, very watered down and tasted like water with cinnamon. Took one star off because the pastries and sandwiches are still good!
google avatar

Shannon F.

Yelp
Yum yum yum! I wish I didn't wait so long to try Smør bakery because it is amazing! The iced coffees were great, the pastries were great, the sandwich was next level. We got the cardamom bun, cinnamon bun, and carrot cake very good. I have had better cardamom buns but this was still very good. The sausage egg and cheese was to die for I want to try all combinations they have for sandwiches. Def check it out! But keep in mind there is not much seating in or outside!
google avatar

Liam R.

Yelp
Insanely good cardamom and cinnamon buns. Admittedly I haven't really tried any others in the city but it's hard to see them doing much better than this!

Devin T.

Yelp
The cardamom bun and the lox sandwich are incredible! Everything is so yummy here and the people very nice too.
google avatar

Joanne L.

Yelp
I see a cardamom bun I go, and this one did not disappoint. The bakery is a small space next to the restaurant so it was understandably quite packed and had a line out the door, which moved pretty fast. I love that they offer a wide selection of pastries, especially some deliciously-looking savory options. Call me basic but Fabrique is my introduction to cardamom buns and gold standard, and this one came really close. The cardamom aroma was pungent, not too sweet, and I liked the added texture of the sprinkled sugar on top. It's slightly denser than the Fabrique ones but not as doughy as the La Cabra ones.

Yelp
Stopped by here around 3 pm on a Saturday and got the loaded focaccia, with potato and cheese. It was decent but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it again. Their ham and cheese croissant looked so good but I don't eat meat and there weren't any other savory croissants left! Service was nice, maybe their other pastries are better?
google avatar

Helayna W.

Yelp
I tried the Royal this morning. A fluffy on the inside, crunchy on the outside piece of focaccia which encompasses thick cut sticks of ham, melted cheese, spicy mustard, and arugula. I loved how much ham they gave in the sandwich, but had a ward time keeping it in the sandwich due to the way it was cut up. I really hope the owners aren't discouraged by this review into putting one or two ultra thin slices of ham, but rather one or two flat steaks of ham in there. I will probably order the Royal again and eat it there next time. By the time I was able to make it home with my Togo order the mustard and ham juices made the bottom slice of the sandwich soggy. None the less I loved the fluffy yet crunchy top in both flavor and texture. I also got a mocha and loved that as well. I love how chocolate and coffee compliment each other and hate how most joints drown out the richness with sweetener. This is not one of those places, but they did have simple syrup which you could add at your own discretion. All in all I will be back again and recommend you try it as well.
google avatar

Alexandra L.

Yelp
Came here after eating their brunch next door. The brunch dishes were excellent already but I really wanted to come try their cardamom bun. It was amazing and I'll definitely be back to get it again!
google avatar

Maria Regina Alexis L.

Yelp
My go to order is the Oat Milk Latte, Ham & Cheese Croissant and Cardamom Bun. Service is fast and area is cozy. If you need great baked goods with exceptional coffee, stop by here.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
The Smør team just opened a bakery on the same block, about the size of their original location, with some more savory options but also a full case of delicious new baked goods. It's all about the buns, with 3 excellent choices available today (cinnamon, cardamom and a savory), but also make sure you try the amazing Chocolate Rye Cookie. And definitely get something savory - the incredible Sausage, Egg & Cheese on housemade brioche is a must.
google avatar

Ankita P.

Yelp
Cardamom bun was the best I've had in nyc! Sooo soft inside and had a decently strong cardamom flavor. The prices on their baked items are also very fair ($5 for a ham and cheese croissant!). Small inside but Love the little seating area outside
google avatar

Kathryn T.

Yelp
Good bakery that pairs with the delicious Smor next door. Here's the recap on what you need to know about the bakery: 1. egg sandwiches are a little plain. Tarragon aiolis (and others) are good but don't make up for the lack of spices 2. Pretty good cardamom bun. Top 5 in the city but not the absolute best or biggest ones. 3. Other delicious baked goods. Arguably the cinnamon bun is better. 4. It sells a variety of delicious snacks and sauces. Overall, a good place to come in and grab what you need for a morning coffee/breakfast but doesn't necessarily top other bakeries in the area.

Robert W.

Yelp
A small but welcoming place with eager service and quality food. I ordered the "Salmon & Co.," and it's hard to dazzle a New Yorker with a lox sandwich, but it was fresh, tasty, hearty, and ample (they don't stint on the sourdough roll, salmon, tomato, capers, etc.). It made for a satisfying meal at good value. I'm not sure whether the Bernese mountain dog who dazzled a table necessarily is among the standard clientele, but the good feelings surrounding the animal meshed with Smor's good vibe.
google avatar

Jennie B.

Yelp
[dine-in] The brioche bun on the breakfast sandwich was HEAVENLY. I got the sausage and cheese - the taragon aioli was really good, but I'd be open to trying their other sandwiches. Their cardamom bun was also good. Blends in with the other great ones in the city, but I couldn't say it was my favorite. Coffee was ok-good. Small space.
google avatar

Terri S.

Yelp
Cardamom Buns here are top notch as the cardamom aroma wafts up from the plate and you can taste it in every single bite. They're sticky and not overly sweet, I've had them more times than I can count and on a couple occasions they were a touch underbaked, but I'll keep returning for more. I've tried a couple other things from the menu, which were all tasty, but the 5 stars are for the Cardamom buns.

Elana W.

Yelp
Such a good sandwich so yummy and everything on the menu looks amazing, cafe is nice and sunny and open
google avatar

Judy Z.

Yelp
A cute bakery with some seating and cafe options! We wanted to come for Sunday brunch and accidentally ended up at the next door restaurant Smor first. It's a small bakery so there's not much seating inside or outside of the cafe. Everything we ordered (chai latte with oat, sausage egg and cheddar, and avocado egg and cheddar sandwiches) was pretty good. The sandwiches were messy due to the grease from the brioche bun and fixings. The chai was not too sweet and had a good spice mix. The service was quick. Definitely want to come back and try the cardamom buns!
google avatar

Charu M.

Yelp
Grabbed some pastries and coffee here for my parents who were visiting. They were absolutely amazing! We had some type of muffin, the cardamom bun, and the cheddar and chive scone. Everything was so fresh, and very well priced. Will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
The cinnamon & cardamom bun were delicious! They were more bready (comparing it to Fabrique) but was flavorful. Staff was also very friendly and nice. If I am craving for cinnamon or cardamom bun and around the neighborhood, I would come back here to get them.
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
Order from here for lunch-- got the AEC and a donut. The sandwich was pretty good, nothing super amazing or standout. The donut was definitely my favorite of the two, I'm not sure what kind it was but it looked super yummy and way light and fluffy inside. Probably won't come back here for the sandwiches but will definitely be back to try the cinnamon and cardamom buns that everyone is talking about.
google avatar

Charmaine T.

Yelp
I love the cardamom buns! Best I've had in the city honestly. The tebirkes is a unique Danish pastry which the staff told me is Smør's take on an almond croissant - I thought that that description is closer to what an actual tebirkes is but it's still pretty good.
google avatar

Sharon W.

Yelp
Ordered food delivery and loved it! Good quality and tasty food, nice presentation. Sorry my son was too fast enjoying it and we missed taking a picture of it. There was only an empty box left. Will try to dine in next time. Lovely food and very nice experience.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
I got the Cardamom bun and an iced latte and everything was pretty good. Everybody talks about La Cabra being better, but I like Smor's slightly chewier cardamom bun.
google avatar

Leanna W.

Yelp
Def come here for their cardamon buns!! I think it's the best in the city! It's super soft and the cardamon isn't too strong. The cinnamon buns here are very good as well. There is some seating inside but limited.
google avatar

Maija B.

Yelp
Best cardamom bun I've ever had. The rest of the menu looks amazing as well, can't wait to come back and try their other baked goods.
google avatar

Eli P.

Yelp
This review will remain at one star until the conserva sandwich goes back to previous recipe of tuna, tarragon aoili, olive tampanade, lettuce, and chips. It's unjust and borderline criminal to get rid of that sandwich as I had touted it the best tuna sandwich in the world, and I eat an ungodly amount of tuna. To answer your question, no I have not tried the new one. The point of this review is that I am in full boycott until I can get my pride and joy back. I feel like I have lost a close friend. I will be checking daily until I see my glorious sandwich return to the menu.

Hazel F.

Yelp
Everything about this adorable Scandinavian cafe deserves two thumbs up. Simple high quality food with emphasis on detail and small surprises. Multifaceted menu, gracious service and all around joyful atmosphere. A friend and I enjoyed brunch inside restaurant. Avocado toast was excellent; smoked salmon plate, a work of art and great taste.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
I like la cabras cardamom bun and coffee program more but this place is great as well
google avatar

Amanda I.

Yelp
I was walking by and saw a huuuge crowd outside on a Saturday morning. From outside, you could smell fresh cardamom buns. I didn't have a choice but to go in and get some at that point. They were packed but still had a bunch of options to choose from. I tried their cardamom bun and seasonal donut (earl grey and lemon I believe) and it was honestly the best doughnut I've had in NYC so far.
google avatar

Alyson C.

Yelp
I absolutely adore this place. The tebirke is phenomenal. Note: the decaf machine is somehow always broken! If you drink decaf, get your coffee somewhere else beforehand.
google avatar

Meghan L.

Yelp
This spot was perfect for a Sunday afternoon snack! I got the seasonal focaccia, which was home to whipped ricotta, smoked salmon, capers, pickled red onions, and fresh dill. Super light and delicious! The focaccia was wheat and had a lovely tinge of sourdough vibes. Great quick bite option in the EV, but if you have more time, go to the OG a couple steps down the block. Will be back for sure!
google avatar

Joanna L.

Yelp
Such a great new addition to the neighborhood! The loaded focaccia was so soft. I also got a cardamom bun and it's the best one I've had by far! Super warm and had a bit of sweetness to it too. Will be back!
google avatar

Mark Z.

Yelp
The cardamom bun was good. A little too bready for me, compared to La Cabra's, but you get a good taste of cardamom flavor. And service on a friday morning was friendly and efficient. There's indoor seating for ~10 people and 3 small outdoor tables.
