The 21 Best Breakfast Spots In NYC

"Smør got its start in the East Village, but its second location in Clinton Hill is larger and has table service—perfect for a leisurely weekday morning in Brooklyn. Come alone, meet a friend, or bring your toddler to eat cardamom buns and egg sandwiches under a skylight in the minimalist room that could very well be a Scandinavian candle store. At 10am, they start serving lunch, too, which is good news because then you can also try the crispy shrimp sandwich with extra-herby tartar sauce." - bryan kim, willa moore, neha talreja, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah, will hartman

The Best New Restaurants in Brooklyn, March 2025: According to Eater Editors

"Smør, a Scandinavian all-day cafe, first opened in the East Village. Now, five years later, the team has opened a much larger space that’s a bakery by day, a full-service restaurant (serving beer and wine with really solid happy hour deals) at night. At dinner, standouts include the schnitzel and sausage with apple chutney, as well as their Danish-style hot dogs — all of which make for hearty options as temperatures drop. Have a nightcap next door at Hartley’s afterward, and then return in the morning to Smør for their signature cardamom buns and coffee." - Emma Orlow

Smør (Clinton Hill) - Review - Clinton Hill - New York - The Infatuation

"Smør, a popular all-day cafe in the East Village, has a second, larger location in Clinton Hill. This full-service outpost is minimalist—white walls, light wood seating—yet inviting, with a skylight and pops of color from greenery and a bright orange clock. Large windows let in ample sunlight during the day, and at night, offer a wide-screen view of the trees outside, strung with lights. Neighborhood folks will appreciate the breakfast and lunch offerings of cardamom buns, pastries, egg sandwiches, and smørrebrød on dense Danish rye. But we like dinner here too, accompanied by the surround-sound murmur of flirtatious dates and toddler babble. There are interesting wines and vermouths, and shrimp in many exciting forms, including a fried shrimp sandwich with fantastically herby tartar sauce, and shrimp salad-topped sourdough toast that's dotted with roe. And there’s a stellar tuna tartare, with silky diced fish and creamy stracciatella—a pairing with instant on-plate chemistry. photo credit: Paul Quitoriano" - Molly Fitzpatrick

NYC New Restaurant Openings: October 2024 - Eater NY

"Clinton Hill: Sebastian Perez and Sebastian Bangsgaard first opened Smør, a Scandinavian all-day cafe, in the East Village in a tiny storefront before expanding with a neighboring bakery during the pandemic. Five years later, the team has opened a full-service restaurant version of Smør in Brooklyn. By day, there’s a bakery counter, with pastries like cardamom buns. It will also offer a full-service daytime menu with egg sandwiches, pickled herring open-faced sandwiches, and Danish pancakes with lemon zest. By night, it’s a full-on restaurant and wine bar, serving shrimp salad on sourdough, sesame-crusted schnitzel, and hot dogs with curry ketchup. Rice pudding is for dessert." - Emma Orlow

Google
A must-visit on every trip, this was our first time at the Brooklyn location. I love that it has more indoor seating, we visited during the time when they had servers waiting on tables, which was great. Don't skip the cardamom bun. The coffee is always fantastic. All the sandwiches are so good.

Google
This is a lovely neighbourhood cafe which does coffee, tea and wines with baked goods and a superb breakfast menu. The flavour of the brioche sandwiches is exquisite and the plated meals are generously portioned. Staff are awesome too - really friendly and happy to chat about the menu and the area.

Google
This is my friend’s one of the fav place to eat brunch! I am so glad we chose this to kick start the long weekend. The big breakfast is DELICIOUS! Highly recommend it, the quantity of everything in the dish was just right. The chicken sandwich was tasty too! Lovely and warm service. It’s always crowded and busy so reserve ahead.

Google
Made it over to Smør for a Saturday brunch bite. As other reviews have mentioned, make a reservation in advance if you plan on sitting down for brunch. We didn’t make a reservation, but put our names down and just grabbed drinks at a few bars nearby. It made the 1.5 wait go by much faster! That all being said, the food was delicious and well worth the wait. :)

Google
Had a solo dinner at Smor this week and it was everything I could have wanted. I went with the sesame schnitzel and it was fried to perfection. The cucumber salad is unassuming but amazing. I also had to get the trout toast with salmon roe and it tastes as good as it looks. Washed it all down with a cold danish beer. Nothing better. Great chill vibes and friendly staff. Can’t wait to come back and try more stuff.

Google
4.5 🌟 Food was great, and also at a great price. Not pictured, but very much enjoyed with the AEC. The smoked salmon smørrebørd was very tasty, but you get more with the chicken salad. Split the cardamom bun amongst us, which a great sweet treat. Inside was nice and bright, as you’d expect with a Scandinavian restaurant; definitely busy so I suggest making reservations.

Google
Solid breakfast & coffee shop in the Clinton Hill neighborhood. If I lived in the area, this would be a great WFH spot as it has great food, great coffee, and a solid atmosphere. This also is a great place to come with your parents or friends, as it’s neat, clean, and kinda just nice inside. The salmon & co sandwich is exactly what you want in the classic Jewish open face sandwich. No notes here!

Google
The perfect spot for co-working on early weekday mornings! Love sitting at the (laptop friendly) counter by their open kitchen — it’s a great atmosphere (and there’s free wifi). It’s also pretty quiet before 10am. Staff is super sweet, service is fast, and the cardamom bun is divine!

Yelp
I'm biased because any Scandinavian spot will probably automatically get 5 stars from me, and Smor is no exception. We came around 9:30 on a Sunday and there were plenty of tables, but we didn't realize that they have a limited cafe menu until 10am (which is when the crowds came). I definitely will be coming back to try their full selection but regardless we enjoyed the items we got. I tried the salmon&co, and 3 additional pastries. The salmon&co was a good enough substitute for the smoke salmon smorrebrod that wasn't available until 10am. The cardamom bun was just as delicious as the ones at their EV location. I also liked the ham and cheese pastry, but thought the sausage roll was a bit lacking. I will definitely be back for the smorrebrods and the shrimp sandwich!

Yelp
Nice addition to the neighborhood as there aren't too many Scandinavian-inspired restaurants. They offer cafe service in the morning and then transition to a more typical restaurant in the later morning and afternoon (8 am - 10 am you order at the bar, but can dine in. No table service until 10 am). The vibe is trimmed down and sparse (very Scandinavian feeling), but welcoming. The coffee and food are both good. I enjoy their bean soup for dinner. They always have a range of seafood items too. In the morning, I like the cardamom buns, which often are still warm from the oven. When I go in the morning, I typically have my small dog and they never give me a hard time (I don't stay, I just come in to grab a coffee). They have a few outdoor tables too, which are nice to sit in as they are on a quiet street. Random observation - The morning is really taken over by parents with their kids. Tables fill up fast as this seems to be a hot spot as a before school meet up. This makes it a bit noisy at times.

Yelp
I loved this place for brunch. The bread, pastries, and coffee were top-tier!! I came here around 9 AM on a Saturday and by 10 AM. The place was almost completely packed. A little overpriced for the portion sizes but overall would go again

Yelp
Simple and phenomenal! Smor won my heart with its baked goods (cardamom bun and doughnut FTW), but we finally got to try a sit down brunch recently. The big breakfast is everything people say: satisfying, flavorful, delicious. It's impressive how relatively clean and healthy food can taste so good. How do you know a dish is executed well? When bacon is on the plate but everything else is better I also enjoyed the club sandwich but the hubs prefers his chicken salad less dressed (this is the saucy kind). Matcha latte and coffee were good too. Love the bread. Will come back to try the Danish pancakes. The vibe is bright and bustling, and service was perfectly helpful without being intrusive. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Ironically I just got home from Scandinavia Sunday when brunch mates decided on this place. Everything we had was so good. A good balance of sweet and savory. I'd recommend making a reservation because seating is limited. And the prices were beyond reasonable. One of the cheapest meals I've had in nyc. I want to try the other location which is closer to me. But this is definitely a spot to check out!

Yelp
Smor is such a cool new spot that opened up! We've been a few times and it's always been very busy but we can usually still be seated. I prefer the food service over their pastries, I've tried a couple of things on the menu but we both loved the bolle med ost best!

Yelp
Okay y'all this place is fire. I'm sooo happy they opened a Smor in the Clinton Hill neighborhood because this is what we need here. If you want that cozy neighborhood cafe feel this is the place to me. They have brunch and dinner options. Their coffee and their pastries are amazing! They recently just opened but I've been here like 10 times already. Staff are super attentive and amazing. I've only had great service thus far. There was a day where my partner and I waited for like 30 minutes to get our order -- there was a glitch in the system and our order just happened to be skipped over. They handled it very well and treated us for the inconvenience.

Yelp
Scandinavian bakery and cafe by day; restaurant by night. Surprisingly busy on a frigid weeknight. They had ample seating for walk ins at their counter, but it seemed their table seating was mostly booked up. We grabbed a couple seats at their counter, but I think they likely could have squeezed us in at a table. I'm guessing there were some more cancellations than expected due to the weather. We had a big appetite and likely over-ordered. I started with a glass of gamay which was surprisingly served very chilled. I believe there were eight or so wines available by glass. Additional bottle menu which I didn't review. They had some beers but no spirits. Food wise, the smor hot dog and the corn fritters were served first. I likely wouldn't have ordered the hot dog, but it was circled on the menu leading me to give it a shot. It was a pricey wiener at $7. The justification for the pricey comes from the fancy bun, fancy ketichup, and fancy mustard. I wouldn't have mind spending a bit more for fancy meat too. The corn fritters were served with a creamy sauce. I liked the texture of the fritters a lot. Crispy on the outside with more of a stringy feel on the inside. The temperature was perfect. Sometimes I bite into a fritter and burn myself from the inside; this was not the case. Ensuing course was the beans in broth with their signature sour dough. Sour dough was reheated to give it a slight crisp. The broth had a syrupy texture to it and was quite savory. Soup also had potatoes and bits of pepper. All together, it was quite flavorful and we made sure to clean up every last bit with the bread. We ordered two main courses which ended up being a bit too much. We probably would have been fine with one main or another small plate. The first main that was served was the shrimp burger. One of the best shrimp burgers that I've had. Had a big meaty patty which was the star. Served a fluffy and milky bun with cucumbers in a tzatziki like sauce. We also had the sesame schnitzel. This was also one of my favorite dishes of the night. Schnitzel was super thin with a medium thick and crispy breading. Meat was still juicy which admittedly is tough to accomplish for a thin cut. It was served with a curry sauce and cucumbers in a creamy sauce. I highly recommend spritzing the accompanying lemon to provide some acidity to compliment the savory and saltiness of the schnitzel. Pacing of the food was on point. Staff was informative. I believe there was only one restroom which was single occupancy and handicap accessible.

Yelp
We popped in for a Saturday night dinner and was surprised with how quiet it was. We are always happy to have good Scandanavian food. In terms of food, we started with the tasty trout toast - salty from the heaped on roe, and overall good trout. The tuna tartare, comparatively, was slightly undersalted but still yummy. We enjoyed the heartiness of the sesame schnitzel - crispy and served with a cucumber yogurt and sweet curry mayo. The shrimp sandwich, more like a shrimp cake with herbs was our least favorite. We finished the night with Danish pancakes (crepe-like pancakes), moist and tasty with blueberry jam and cream. We were there in time for happy hour and got a carafe wine at an excellent deal. Overall a lovely meal although the ambiance is a bit cold (both stark and temperature setting).

Yelp
I am a Smør fanatic. I always recommend it as a place to get dinner with friends. Lots of shareable plates, good portion sizes that leave you full but not stuffed (I end up stuffed because I always have a small plate, entree, and dessert ). The danish pancakes are to die for and the beans and broth are super comforting with the sourdough bread. Highly recommend. The ambiance is great too.

Yelp
My friend and I had a fantastic dinner here! The space is intimate and modern. We ordered 5 different dishes to share including the Miso Scallops, which were a special that night. Everything was absolutely delicious! We could've prob done with one dish less but we were excited to try it all. Our other dishes were the Trout Toast, Tuna & Stracciatella, Potatoes & Anchovies, and the Crispy Shrimp Sandwich. Service was friendly and attentive. I'd definitely recommend checking it out!

Yelp
Great food, even better pastries. Good coffee. Great addition to the neighborhood. Kinda feel bad for the other coffee shops located close by.

Yelp
This place has so much potential, and I'm eager to return and try more dishes! The interior is very Scandinavian- beautiful in its simplicity, which allows for the emphasis to be on the natural light (skylight has beautiful exposed beams too). Tables are very small, we had to stack plates a bit with our table of 4 (we also had a baby and a dog, so, we had some extra juggling to do, but it didn't bother us much! The water cups are plastic, which was a bit disappointing, since the coffee cups are all gorgeous, unique ceramic. Plus, plastic is the devil. It just didn't jive with the Scandinavian feel- glass would have felt better (and so much more eco-friendly, and better tasting water to boot). I ordered a drink 3 times, but struck out the first two times. First I ordered a decaf latte, but they don't have decaf coffee (I'm a caffeine lightweight, what can I say). The second drink I ordered was their elderflower fizz but since they just opened, the liquor drinks on the menu are a tease- they don't have their license yet. However my friend's beer was delicious, so there is always beer and wine. Then I tried ordering a matcha, and they made me one, yay. Service was attentive. Now for the food! The 4 of us adults shared bites of everything. Absolute favorites were the ham & cheese croissant, the cardamom bun, the shrimp sandwich and the pickled herring. My friend's egg sandwich had fluffy, soft eggs. I was not impressed with the matcha donut, as it tasted like a regular donut with barely a hint of matcha. I also wasn't fond of my avocado toast- the ingredients were fresh but it was pretty bland other than the chili oil on top, but it needed some tang or savory element. All in all it was a positive experience and I can't wait to come back and try more (and get the pickled herring and the cardamom bun again!).

Yelp
I want to like this place and have given it several chances but am unfortunately disappointed every time I go here. The sandwiches are SO messy-- to the point that they aren't fun to eat because your hands are covered. I've also found the service lack luster. It's a cute spot, but I would not recommend sit down service.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try SMØR, and had the pleasure of a quick brunch yesterday. Everything was delicious, drinks, food and the to-go Cinnamon roll and savory scone. The standout was the crispy shrimp burger and smashed potatoes done perfectily with a dill aoili. And the prices were great , will definitely be a new go to!

Douni S.

Yelp
great food, lovely staff-- felt like a very scandinavian experience. clean, quick and lovely!

Bella F.

Yelp
Dang the food was so good. My friend and I split the chicken salad sandwich and the lox plate. Bread was fresh and may have been either baked in house or found locally. The only thing that wasn't my favorite was my mocha, I think it had been sitting on the counter for a few minutes so the foam got all bubbly and it was lukewarm. But the service was great and vibe was awesome so I still would rate it 5 stars.

Eric H.

Yelp
I was a regular at the Manhattan location and super happy they opened closer to home. I have dined here three times, one brunch and two dinners. All three times did not disappoint. Quality food and great service. brunch i had bagel and lox and the cardamom danish, both great. dinners we shared appetizers and entrees. Love the bean soup, trout bread, schnitzel, and sausage dishes. delicious wine at reasonable prices. make sure you have the pancakes for desert!

Yelp
Yum yum! Great vibe, incredible service and everything on the menu is tasty. Unique take with shrimp dishes and hot dogs. More Nordic! More Nordic! Get weird SMOR!

Yelp
I'm from Colorado and I've been to the other Smor a few times (yum!!). I was thrilled to hear this location had opened closer to my family's home. The menu has some different feature items but it is just as good as the OG! You can't go wrong with a beer, either of the hot dogs (amazing price!), and the leafy greens were SO good. We also got the Dream Cake for dessert (my mouth is watering as I type...). The staff were very kind and attentive and the ambience is just what you'd hope for in a Danish restaurant. I loved it so much we went back for Saturday brunch and the food was again delicious. I'll be dreaming about the savory scallion cheddar scone & morning plate until my next trip back to Brooklyn. Thank you, Smor, for great food and great memories with my family.

Yelp
I've been a frequent visitor to Smør's East Village bakery and restaurant locations, and every time has been nothing short of amazing. Naturally, I was curious to check out their new Clinton Hill spot, and all I can say is wow! Simply incredible. The new location offers many of the classic menu items I've come to love from their city locations, but there are several new and exciting dishes that really stood out. The crispy shrimp sandwich, tuna and stracciatella, and squash fritters are just a few of the fresh additions that absolutely delighted me. And don't even get me started on the desserts--both the rice pudding and the dreamcake are to die for! I'm honestly in love with everything these guys are doing. Smør delivers a unique and modern culinary experience, and the value you get for the price is better than most places I've been. On top of that, the Brooklyn location is beautifully designed with a cozy Scandinavian vibe that makes the whole dining experience feel casual yet lovingly curated. If you haven't been to Smør Clinton Hill yet, do yourself a favor and go

Yelp
Phenomenal! Popped in for dinner, the leafy greens are unbelievable and both hot dogs totally change the game. For dessert we had the Dream Cake which is just as good as the name implies. Staff was super attentive and kind, the ambiance is excellent. We had such a great experience that we decided to come back for brunch the next morning! Do not miss the cardamum bun. Insane. Also had the Morning Plate, which was the exact breakfast I imagined myself having if I were like, in a Home Alone 2 type situation (complimentary). Highly recommend
