Societe Brewing - Review - San Diego - The Infatuation

"Though it’s been around since 2012, San Diego’s Societe isn’t as well-known as some of the bigger breweries in town (Ballast Point, Belching Beaver, Pizza Port). They do, however, make some tremendous, straightforward beer, like The Butcher, a classic, deeply malty Russian imperial stout, and The Pupil, a fantastically clean-tasting, citrus-forward American IPA. Once you’ve picked up your beers to-go here, head over to We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Google
Great beer selection. Lots of room. And tacos at Chacho’s food truck are good!. The loaded fried are Loaded. If you are in the area - come here. Loved the hazy and IPA options. My friend liked the Sours.

Hans Foto

Google
Society is always a great spot to stop for a beer! They have indoor and outdoor seating. The tasting room is wide open, and you can see the whole brewery and all the fermentation tanks. There is always a variety of beer consistently on tap. It's a great brewery if you have a large party too, much better accommodations than other breweries in the area. Almost every time, there seems to be some sort of food truck or pop up to grab a bite to eat.

Denise Garcia

Google
Six of us used to come here all the time. The beers are great and taco truck is amazing. However now there is little outdoor seating and it is so loud inside we just sat there and looked at each other. The guy behind the bar asked me to speak up when I went to order. We'll just do take takeout from now on.

Jon Miller-Bailey

Google
I have been here 3 times but the last two times the service has been awful. Three inches of foam on the top. Asked if they could top it off and both times, same response "that is a an imperial pint glass". The board says it's a full but the glass isn't. The attitude here is astonishing. The beer is average and the service is below that. Won't be back and wouldn't recommend.

Joel Bartlett

Google
Nice brewery with a huge outdoor space in the parking lot and ample indoor seating. Solid beers, the IPAs are the stars. We took some home. The Belgian Brew’s were a bit off, just didn’t nail it. Too bad, Belgians are my go to style but difficult to make excellent. Met some friendly folks and chatted for a while. Food truck tacos were very tasty, and they texted when they were done which meant more time with friends and less waiting for food. Dog friendly too.

Lia Garcia

Google
Best Craft Brewery in San Diego. Amazing craft beer, welcoming environment, friendly knowledgeable staff. They offer free brewery tours on Saturdays and weekly rotating food trucks. Family friendly location, equipped with board games for entertainment and dogs are welcome! Well worth the visit!

David Gorrie

Google
Really like their stout “The Butcher” and their pale ale “The Statesman” is also delicious. This brewery is tucked away off of Clairemont Mesa Blvd. right next to the 163 freeway in Kearny Mesa. There is plenty of parking and a huge tasting room. They have a nice, varied selection of beers that rotate from time to time. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and very clean. They give tours of the brewery often (I think at 4pm on weekdays but don’t quote me). Another cool perk is that they have different food trucks almost every day.

Joseph Ortega

Google
Great brewery, top 5 in all of San Diego IMO (which is known for excellent breweries). Everything's great & food trucks are awesome. Sometimes they have markets, events and yoga or cooking classes. Check in-store regularly for special events (of which, there are many). Update April 2024: still excellent selection

Yelp
Fabulous place, no frills, friendly staff and great selection of beers; what more can one ask for? Just a couple of glasses of "The Widow", I guess ;-) We really like Belgian beer, and the gentleman who welcomed us at the counter gave us tasters of The Madam and of The Widow; the first one is very good, but the second was outstanding: strong, flavorful, complex yet very drinkable. Definitely a go-to for our next visit. There is a wide variety of kind of beers, Lager, IPA, Stout, etc, so there is something for everyone. The names are very creative too. They do not serve food, but there was a food truck parked by the outdoor area, serving tacos that looked delicious. I am not sure if there is a rotation of food trucks. In closing, we will definitely go back to La Societe, and will bring friends.

Yelp
I had the opportunity to swing by Societe while visiting San Diego. A fantastic brewery with a great selection of different beverages. I enjoyed several of the IPA varieties. Sat outside in a courtyard they share with the folks from Churchill's cigars. I have another review for that wonderful place. The time I was there a vendor was in the courtyard making tamales. The experience was great and would recommend you swing by and sample their tasty selection of beers!

Yelp
The most important men in my life love Societe beer, so I can't rate this with anything less than four stars. Personally, I am fine with most of their beers I've tried, with only one or two standing out amongst the others for me. I do really like the proximity of this brewery to my lab, and I think their Oktoberfest decor is super cute and I can't wait to return this year. I am also in love with the tacos that are frequently sold outside of this brewery, but I've only tried them during work hours (and unfortunately I can't have beer at that time). As for the service, it's always been friendly, and I like that they're not pushy about anything.

Yelp
Good beer and vibes. Service is friendly. Outside food truck and atmosphere was nice.
google avatar

Felina V.

Yelp
Society is a San Diego staple for great beer, good friends, an excellent indoor/outdoor atmosphere, and chill vibes!
google avatar

Tiffany R.

Yelp
The atmosphere is fun and upbeat. They have tables in and outside and a handful of board games. I'd probably bring my own games like sushi go, kites, slay, etc. with a group of friends next time. Service was fast and friendly. They do not have food however, there is a taco truck that comes!
google avatar

Yelp
There isn't a brewery my wife and I didn't like. Being in San Diego we are spoiled. There are so many good ones in the area. Add that to the year round good weather. Who doesn't want to enjoy a tasty beer on the nice shiny day. Tucked away off of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. You will find Societe Brewery Company. A nice sized brewery with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Parking is ample so getting a pint and relaxing somewhere is not difficult. At the time we were there. They had a food truck. So you could have had a burger with your beer that day. Most of the time breweries don't serve food but subsidizes that by inviting a food truck to offer their patrons food if they want something to eat. The food trucks vary so it might be a taco truck one day and a hot dog stand the next. Most breweries have a website with a schedule of what food trucks are available on what day. Worst case scenario. If your hungry. Bring your own food. Most breweries are cool with you bringing outside food within reason. Overall, Societe is a well ran brewery. The selections are wide ranging appealing to different beer tastes. The service is friendly. Parking and seating is easy to find. Support local businesses especially the good ones. Societe rocks. Drink beer here.

Yelp
Great beers, and a taco truck outside. Met with a large group, and there was some plenty of room outside without a reservation. Hard to beat on a sunny day.
google avatar

Octavio V.

Yelp
Love that they have games, unpretentious service, great food truck with very good tacos, and good selection of beer. They have ample parking and you can bring ur dog.

Yelp
Great beer, awesome venue. Had a huge group a friends come here for a party today. This place is big inside and out. It was a great place to hold party. They helped us with reserving 2 tables. Beers selection is great. I personally like lagers and ales. The Widow was delicious. It was a dark beer with great flavor. Also had the Debutante...delicious and refreshing. My wife had the Butcher. Good flavor of chocolate and coffee. Service was great. Staff educated us on their selections and made good recommendations on our personal interests. This place is super clean. Staff come around to make sure you are okay. They clean empty glasses and clean the tables. Definitely coming back here again.
google avatar

Mohit K.

Yelp
We were given attitude by the employee admitting entry because we should have "called ahead", even though there were tons of open tables and no line at the front. I understand that 8 people arriving is stressful, but it was extremely rude and there were lots of other larger groups and families at the premise treated well. The beer was good and the property was great, but it's hard to get past that initial impression.
google avatar

Samir Y.

Yelp
Great spot on Clairemont Mesa! Good atmosphere, great team, give honest opinions about which beers are their favorites, and a lot of seating. Great venue
google avatar

Yelp
Great local brewery with a wide variety of choices with Chachos Food Truck for delicious eats,

Yelp
Came in to catch SDSU play in the first round of Men's NCAA tournament. All beers were $1 off while the game was on. Tried the light beer and the Belgium dark ale. Both were tasty. Our pourer was friendly and engaging. Overall a great way to spend a bit of time over great beers and catching the game. Oh and SDSU won!
google avatar

Karla C.

Yelp
We made a special trip to San Diego from LA just to visit this place and bottom line it sucked! Unfriendly staff and the beer was not impressive..
google avatar

Stacey M.

Yelp
Great little brewery tucked away in Clairemont/Kearny Mesa area. There's tons of indoor and outdoor seating which means you can almost always find a spot! It's a great place to grab a beer and sit and relax. There's not many (or any?) TVs that I can recall so I might not come here to watch a game, but it would be a great spot to play some cards or just chat with friends! The beer selection was on the smaller side but had a lot of variety. We tried the blonde, a stout, kettle sour and west coast IPA. They were all good but I think the IPA had the best flavor. The kettle sour was a little off (kinda tasted like a tangy Belgian). We will definitely be back. They don't have a kitchen but I think there's a food truck typically posted up outside!
google avatar

Rick H.

Yelp
Been coming here for years, and surprised that I have never rated or reviewed them on yelp. In my experience, maybe the best local brewery in San Diego. The beer is good, cold, the selection is broad, but not too, and the staff is incredible. The ambience is chill, has a very positive vibe, they rotate in a number of food trucks that are always interesting, and mostly good, and always leave here feeling like I made a good decision to stop in. I had the "Pupil" today, one of my favorite IPA's, delish, smooth, not too hoppy, just right. Shout out to Troy for being a great representative for Societe; professional, personable, and always good to see him!

Yelp
Visited this brewery with a group of coworkers on a Friday evening, and it was poppin! Seems like this is a great place to stop by for a happy hour, with lots of indoor and outdoor seating (indoor was really hot though). I'm not a beer aficionado plus I'm indecisive so I just asked the staff for a flight of their lighter beers. Even though I'm not a huge beer drinker, I enjoyed everything I got! The Not Enormous was my favorite! It tasted similar to a sour, had a similar fruity tangy taste but with a hint of saltiness. These are all the beers I got in my flight, and I would recommend these for anyone who's not a big beer drinker like me: - Not Enromous - Festbier - The Harlot - Light Beer They also have a taco truck next door, which is a great food option! The taco truck staff walks your food over to you anywhere in the brewery area, so no need to wait near the truck for your order. My friend ordered a burrito during peak dinner time and the staff told us that it was a 20-30 min wait. So definitely prepare for long wait times if it's busy.
google avatar

Harrison T.

Yelp
Love love love this brewery in Kearny Mesa. The beer is great, the vibes are good, and there is no shortage of indoor and outdoor seating. A food truck (Chacho's tacos) is also located in their parking lot, making the excellent combination of tacos and and beer come to life. They're also dog-friendly. Another huge plus is that they are right across the street from Menya Ultra. If you're ever stuck in the Menya line waiting for top-class ramen wondering what to do with your time, wonder no more :)
google avatar

Alden C.

Yelp
Glad to have tried a beer from Societe Brewing at last. Opportunity only allowed me to get one of their fine beers and I'm so very glad that I did. If another opportunity comes up I will definitely need to cease it. Haze-O-Matic was the beer that Steve and I enjoyed. Living up to it's name this is a great hazy IPA. The hops are great and I can taste complexity in each sip making this a rewarding and fun beer experience!
google avatar

David J.

Yelp
The beer is outstanding! Excellent IPAs and Incredible Imperial Stout called The Butcher. The atmosphere is good, and the servers are the best, very friendly and helpful. They do not have a kitchen, but there is a Food Truck parked permanently outside that has good street tacos. You can also bring in your own food. I highly recommend this place. They also have a smaller location in Old Town, with a different vibe but same great beer and servers. You can't go wrong, highly recommended.
google avatar

Ed M.

Yelp
I enjoyed my hour or so here waiting out traffic from work. Chachos taco truck is right out front of this place so that's a nice touch to provide food. I had the light beer in a full mug. It was hoppier than I thought but enjoyable with this warm weather. Societe may be the biggest brewery in the immediate area from what I experienced. I've been to Kilowatt and Ataraxia down the road and this place is huge compared to those spots. Definitely a good group spot with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.
google avatar

Joyce T.

Yelp
*sniff sniff* Smells like a brewery!! Brewed right there. They will give you "tastes" to make sure you like your type of brew. My fave are high ABV and they did not disappoint. Of course, array of IPAs and other styles of beers. Soft drinks, too. No hards or wine here Very dog friendly in the outdoor seating.
google avatar

Mike V.

Yelp
We absolutely love it here, it's our go to brewery. Beers are extremely diverse so there's a little something for everyone's taste buds. They have great service behind the bar and the space is huge! Also very pet friendly and they have a tasty taco truck. The only slight criticism we have now that the weather is warming up is that they supply more shaded areas to sit under since it's mostly concrete and possibly some daily specials/ happy hours. If they stayed open an hour later Fri/ Sat that would be a big plus too. Love it here! Thx

Yelp
GREAT BEER ! My wife and I were over here a few years ago. These guys brew pretty nice beers. I've tried The Harlot which is a Belgian style beer....very nice indeed. The brewery headquarters looks a treat with loads of space. Shame they don't serve food inside to go with their great beers. Maybe some Aussie style meat pies might be the solution...perfect with a beer...just ask an Aussie. Perky's Pies is just around the corner. The guy behind the bar told me it's all draught at this stage .....they have no intention of selling the stuff in cans or stubbies. That's a crying shame because it's a good drop and I would buy a 6 pack to take home...if it was available. I have since tried The Pupil fused with Mango & Guava and also The Apprentice....both absolutely outstanding. These guys know how to brew bloody good and very flavorsome premium beers ! Note : Societe Brewing Co have since released many of their great beers in cans and I drink them almost every week !
google avatar

Ryan F.

Yelp
Big fan of Societe since day 1. Pupil still reins as one of my favorite IPA's in San Diego. Draft list doesn't change a ton, but when there is something new up it's guaranteed to be awesome. Really look forward to their Festbier this time of year.
google avatar

S L B.

Yelp
I love the variety of drinks and portion sizes. Food truck comes and supplies the grub. 4 stars not 5 as there was not much selection outside of beer - for the designated drivers, for example.
google avatar

Daniel R.

Yelp
Amazing ipa choices. Delicious. Wide open outdoor seating. I wish they had the taco truck on Monday.
google avatar

Gabe P.

Yelp
Good vibes, nice people, great beer! There is something about this place that makes you feel good, I don't know if it's the family with the infant who seems to be walking for the first time or the couple with the dog at the next table. But it's relaxing and chill. Beer was really good too, we tried the Harlot and Light beer (what kind of a name is that?). There's a mix of smells of barrels and distillery, that's probably what it is!
google avatar

Amy K.

Yelp
Located in Kearny Mesa, there has always been a really delicious taco truck each time I am here. Even on a Tuesday. The smell of the tacos fill the air and I wasn't able to resist. On Taco Tuesdays, each taco costs $2.00. I tried a bunch of light beers this time. Heiress - nice drinkable light Debutante - this one had more flavor and very unique Harlot - another great blonde Madam - this is one of my favorites Not Enormous Mango - flavorful with zest berliner weiss
google avatar

Jen N.

Yelp
Since moving to San Diego several years ago, Societe continues to be one of my top breweries that I always recommend. They have core beers in many styles that were perfected long ago and continue to wow new and old customers. They have evolved since the start of the pandemic - distributing farther, increasing their to go capacity, and adding some new beers here and there. I think it's now the perfect combination of sticking with their traditionally great beers (especially The Pupil!), while still satisfying those with the need to always have something new. Even their new beers stay great, rather than just pumping something new out as fast as possible. Their beertenders are friendly and knowledgeable, they have a nice space inside and outside, and there's a delicious taco truck there too. The location is great too - central for a lot of San Diegans and still close enough for downtown tourists to get to. If you want to get the best of San Diego (and really of the West Coast) beers, don't skip Societe!
google avatar

Virginia S.

Yelp
Lovely outdoor space, generous amount of room to meet up with a group (and dog friendly!). They have heat lamps in case it gets cold. People got tacos and burritos from the food truck, would recommend the shrimp or chicken. Good beer, but not my favorite. Still, they have a good amount of variety and even some non-alcoholic options. Tip: leave the number at the end of the table so they can see where to bring the food. Leave the numbers on the table so they know which tables to clean.
google avatar

Matthew D.

Yelp
It took me a good long while to go back to Societe after my first terrible experience, but they have elevated themselves back to a good status with me. Their West Coast IPA's are flawless and other beers quite good as well. I would advise anyone though, if you aren't treated well at a brewery, just pick up and go to another one in San Diego as there are over 150 breweries and so many are amazing, that you don't need to stand for poor service.
google avatar

Gus L.

Yelp
Societe is a mainstay in the San Diego brewing scene, and for good reason. Personally I am a bit ashamed it has been so long since I have been in here. The outside seating area is spacious and...spaced out. They most always have a decent food truck... the staff is friendly and helpful if you are looking for some hints or tutelage (word of the day) in the direction of beers you should travel...but the beers are the star here. Societe offers a great range from a Mexican type lager, to a host of IPAs (yes it is San Diego still) to some great malty and dark beers to even...yep...a fairly new Light Beer option. All have been executed very nicely and are beers I would come back for on their own. Get in here...have a good beer and enjoy some time with a good person. Cheers!
google avatar

Adam K.

Yelp
The 2 beers I had were good but it's not cold enough. Half way through beer and it's luke warm. I don't understand because the temperature of beer is supposed to pour out at 36 degrees. That's definitely not the case here.
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
Great spot to grab some beers and enjoy the SD sun. The beers are great with a selection for everyone. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Shawn T.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in SD !! Fast service good beer they have a good truck most days the shrimp quesadilla is fire . Plenty of room in & outside . Do visit..

Lauren T.

Yelp
Last night (2/7) I visited Societe Brewing for the first time. I was met with a fun atmosphere, well-made beer but terrible customer service. A short brunette "helped" ring us up. I was curious about a few options, as it was my first time visiting this brewery. She was incredibly stand-offish, rolled her eyes as I tasted two samples and when we asked about how she liked some of the non-alcoholic canned options she said and I quote "I don't know, it's canned, you can read the ingredients on the back". It is such a shame that the bad service is what we remember, we truly enjoyed our drinks and the busy atmosphere but unfortunately will not be coming back.
google avatar

Ankita C.

Yelp
What we ordered: The Harlot (Blonde Ale) & The Madam (Belgian Strong Ale) What we thought: A great spot after a nice hike at Kwaay Paay! Both beers that we tried were delicious and the food from the taco truck complimented them perfectly! Overall, made for a fun hang on a beautiful sunny day! What we rated it: 4/5

LS C.

Yelp
Staff here is phenomenal...live great customer service!! Environment has a great vibe and beer is great
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Great beer, lots of different kinds on tap. Large outdoor area. Had fun there with my dog. There was a taco truck outside that was delicious.
google avatar

Brent D.

Yelp
I've been a Societe fan since I had my first Pupil at a little sausage joint on Shelter Island. That beer was so good, I felt I had finally found a beer as good as a Pliny the elder. Recently, I was finally able to get to the brewery for a few fresh pints. The space itself is classic industrial warehouse chic'. Its a large space with plenty of seating and a large bar. Lot's of games to choose from to play while sipping the fabulous beer. I didn't see any hazy beer here. I hope Societe will be one of the holdouts for good clear beer!
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
Stopped in for a group event, which seemed to be the theme tonight. There were multiple groups of large parties here tonight. But we some how all fit inside. Parking lot seems big but it fills up quickly. They also had a food truck parked outside sushi food truck on this night not sure if they rotate. There is some bar seating and tables scattered around. They do close pretty at 9pm, but the staff is nice about letting everyone know when last call is. It's a good sized brewery but not large. Overall service was good, very relaxed atmosphere. Dog friendly, they have a small patio outside with limited seating. Fun spot to come have a drink and you can grab food in the area afterwards.
google avatar

Jorge B.

Yelp
Thank you for the wonderful gift receipt from you guys for my wife and my 32nd wedding anniversary. Thank you for the employees and CC
google avatar

George S.

Yelp
Excellent beer and excellent service. What more do you want from a brewery..?!? Possibly our favorite stop during a long day of brewery-hopping.
google avatar

Drew J.

Yelp
Exactly what you want in a neighborhood brewery. Visiting from Phoenix. Wish this was in our hood. Could have stayed all night.
google avatar

Martha W.

Yelp
Really like this place especially the beer. I'm a fan of IPA's and they have two I really like (called apprentice and pupil). Had another one that was new to me. It's a 6.5 IPA with a name that escapes me. Anyhoo, I was impressed with their beer garden. Felt safe being six feet apart in my own space in the parking lot. The Mexican food truck was great! Apparently you have to order some food, but believe me you will not regret it!

Jeff O.

Yelp
Cool place friendly vibe, great selection of Societe's beers. Look forward to coming back
google avatar

Lou H.

Yelp
I have been here twice during the pandemic. The first time was back in May and they only had pickup orders then. Now things are way different and better/normal. They have converted their entire front parking lot into a beer garden. They now "serve" food, a Mexican food truck that is parked inside of their beer garden area. State law currently requires you to buy at least one food item per tab in order to also purchase their drinks and sit down. We headed inside of the bar area (masks need to be on) to order our drinks at the counter. This is also where you will order your food item, so there's just one transaction to make. I ordered a couple of street tacos ($2 each, it wasn't Tuesday but they were charging Taco Tuesday pricing, so that's cool). The bartender poured my drink and gave me my receipt. You then drop your receipt off at the truck outside and they make you your food. Then it's time to pick a spot to settle down at. The entire parking lot is filled with spaced out canopy tents with large picnic tables under each of them. There are also spots under umbrellas and tents that are table and chairs. Dogs are permitted in the beer garden, too. Was a nice day to sit outside, have a couple of their drinks and some tacos. Everything was set up well and cleaned. They ever are distilling their own hand sanitizer, and there's a bottle of it on each table for your to use. If you want to take some home, you can buy it, too.
