Best Pizzas in Raleigh, Durham, Cary, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"This East Durham pizza, sandwich, and sub joint may not garner as much attention as its in-town neighbors, but it has built a loyal following with its affordable pizzas and unique herbed crust. The East Durham pie comes with applewood smoked bacon, collard greens, and serrano peppers, and is a must-try. Owner Jorge González-Peña also operates the El Rey de Tacos truck, which can usually be found parked right next door. Pizza and tacos — what more could anyone want?" - Matt Lardie

Google
I was craving pizza and wanted to try somewhere else that was not fast food pizza. I found Sofias and liked how the food looked and the reviews, so I decided to try it. I did their X-Large Pizza with 10 wings special for $25. The food was delivered hot, and the pizza was delicious with large filling slices! The lemon pepper wings left a bit to be desired. They weren't fried hard, but I assumed it was because of the steam in the container partially. I would order from here again but maybe go in to get wings to get a true feel of how they really were.

We literally eat here all the time, for years. So much so, I cant believe I've never left a review. Sofia's fed us through late night hangovers when we were dating/newlyweds, pregnancy cravings when we were expecting, and now our daughter (4 yrs old) is hooked on their food too. (Probably has no choice since shes been raised on Sofia's since the womb lol). Vibe is so chill dining in. Customer service is always impeccable. Delivery is always on time, hot and fresh. We've tried every pizza place in Durham, Sofia's never leaves our top spot. And its not just the pizza. Low key, the BEST wings in the city can be found here. Sandwiches hit just right. Pasta dishes are phenomenal too. And idk who makes the dips, but you could almost drink the Honey Mustard, Ranch, etc they are so good. And the fact that they will deliver to Congress Social Bar is the icing on the cake. We've had plenty of date nights at Congress and really appreciated being able to order from Sofia's and have something delivered so we don't have to stop our fun to find food. This is our neighborhood spot and I hate sharing it, but they've been doing us right for so long, I had to leave a review and give them their flowers.

Google
This place is absolutely amazing, and I’m not just talking about the food! From the atmosphere to the customer service, it truly doesn’t get better than this. I had a pizza and one of their pasta dishes with garlic knots, and everything was hot, fresh, and incredibly delicious. The service was honestly some of the best I’ve ever experienced. I came alone for lunch, but I’m definitely bringing friends and family next time. Huge thank you to the crew for making my first visit perfect. Highly recommend!

Google
Came with our family and basketball teammates. M-Sat lunch special of 2 slices + drink for $6.50 is a great deal! We got 18" pepperoni pizza + 10 wings deal, a Philly sub, and grilled chicken salad. Very happy with it all our food; service was fantastic; portions generous; and prices very reasonable!

Google
Great pizza. Amazing wings. Definitely the best for a combo of both in the area. House sauce is delicious on the hard fried wings and pizza is stupidly good with the sofia's dough blend and sauce. A must try, beware parking is horrible and keep your head on a swivel out there. But if you get it and I can almost promise you'll love it.

Google
best side salad and dressing! the pizza is not bad, crispy and thinner crust which is great, not personally a fan of whatever cheese they use. they have great toppings such as serrano peppers and arugala! wish they were open later. friendly staff, very quick delivery and an asset to the e. durham neighborhood! potato wedges are great too.

Google
Sofia’s pizza is an affordable yet amazing place to visit. I've been here a few times in the past and will continue to do so going forward. Also, the new recipe they are using for the crust as of late is a new improvement. I must say that improved the flavor of the pizza and treats amazing.

Google
We’ve been going to Sofia’s for years and love it. Our favorite menu items are the pizzas, wings (some of the best in Durham), cheesesteaks and homemade ranch. Everything is fresh and the service is always great. We’re so lucky to have this gem in East Durham!

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY LOVED the pesto chicken!!! The dough was absolutely wonderful, crust was crispy and thin, the ingredients were fresh and tasty! My first- and definitely NOT THE LAST time I will visit! The guy who took my order swapped out the arugula for adding bacon and it was just like a pizza I would get at Capital Creations in Raleigh that is sadly no longer in business. BUT NOW!! I can get my NEW FAVORITE PIZZA HERE! Even my co-workers were saying it was the best pizza and couldn't wait to order their own!! Delicious! I can't recommend this place enough! Next time I may just sit there and eat my pizza and have a beer!! Downfall- not enough parking- you have to park on the side of the street. But that small inconvenience will not prevent me from going again!!! Go give this mom and pop pizza joint a try! You'll never order from the franchises again!

Yelp
BEST PIZZA IN DURHAM! Love the fact everything tastes fresh! Love the fact they have a pesto pizza!!

Yelp
Love this place. I ordered a cheese pizza large yesterday. First I'm from NY and I love thin crusted pizza. This was by far the 2nd to best pizza I have had since I've moved to NC. The flavor was good. Of course I added my own seasonings, but the crust was perfect. The service was quick I ordered online and picked it up. The restaurant was fairly small so it gave a comfy vibe. Would order again plus it was the cheapest around town so that's always a plus.

Mackenzi E.

Yelp
We went here because Ideal's was closed, and we were not disappointed! The food was delicious and the service was even better. Shoutout to the lemon pepper wings.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent local pizza joint. Not as fancy as some options around town, but this is great for takeout and they usually have great deals. Much better than any pizza chain.
google avatar

Carol H.

Yelp
The hospitality is wonderful and the same for the food.i had the lunch special slice of pizza a drink and a gourmet salad with homemade dressing. I should have taken a picture I would definitely go there again.

Yelp
oh so delicious! ordered an extra large (20") vegetarian pizza for takeout on a sunday night. i live about half an hour away from sofia's and i got the text that the pizza was ready before i even reached the restaurant, which i found impressive. sofia's is sort of plopped in the middle of angier, and there's not really many great places to park. i am not good at parking and, if i were planning to dine in, the fact that there are only about 6 parking spots on the street probably would've stressed me out. but luckily they have an easier parking spot for curbside pickup! i got home and ate immediately. the pizza was huge (leftovers lasted me the next couple of days) and so tasty. the toppings--bell peppers, sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms, and my favorites, caramelized onions and black olives--were pretty standard for any pizza place, but what really elevated this pizza was the delicious crust, which was lightly herb infused and perfectly soft. i could taste the rosemary on the edges of my slices, which made eating so enjoyable! i would absolutely love to grab a pizza from here again, but i won't dare to attempt to parallel park and eat in. i'll stick to takeout!
google avatar

Marguerite A.

Yelp
The food is really good especially the pizza. Customer service is outstanding. I haven't had the chance to dine it but it has a nice atmosphere.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place for a while. I absolutely love the pizza scene in Durham, and I am adding this place to my list of go-tos. Indoor seating is limited. There are a lot of benches with umbrellas outside on patio. A lot of people seemed to order ahead and picked it up, so I might do that next time. They also have a few beers and soft drinks available in the refrigerator.
google avatar

Jeff F.

Yelp
The pizza here is not the best I've had in North Carolina, but for the price it is really good! It's a cool little spot, and they have more than just pizza. One of these days I want to go back and try some of their entrees. It's too bad that they're not open for dinner. I think they would probably do well!

Yelp
I lived in Durham during COVID-19 and frequently got food from Sofia's. I'm a big meat pizza fan and found that the Carnivoro pizza was perfect for me. I really like Mellow Mushroom's Mighty Meaty pizza and I thought Sofia's Carnivoro was better. If anyone is looking for a meat pizza in Durham, Sofia's is the place to go. I also tried the Philly cheesesteak and potato wedges and they were great as well. Being a big Philly cheesesteak guy I was pleasantly surprised at how good this was, despite not being 100% traditional. It is certainly much better than all the other places in the area selling Philly's with lettuce & tomato in them.

Diamond S.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place but the food just wasn't good. I didn't even eat my garlic knots. Not only were they burnt but the cheese tasted old and the knots taste like they were sitting in the fridge for too long. The pizza had zero redeemable qualities. I could tell it was sitting, it was super greasy, and barely had any sauce. The service was good and the Ambiance is a standard pizza shop.

Yelp
What a gem! A perfect place tucked away in the neighborhood. Good thing we were looking for somewhere we haven't been and came across this place. The vibe is so nice because you get a sense of family right when you pull up. Everyone works together and is so nice. The pizza we got was so cheesy and good we finished it all. And the wings. We wished we ordered more!!! They were so good. I want to keep this place secret but at the same time tell everyone to GO GO GO TRY!

Brent D.

Yelp
Love their pizza and their sandwiches. Their pressed sandwiches are awesome! Check 'Em out!

Yelp
When it comes to pizza, I can't get enough so I was curious when I heard about Sofia's online. A new pizzeria out in E. Durham, I took a trip over to check it out. It's in an interesting spot on Angier, there really isn't a parking lot so you'll need to grab a street spot on the side of the restaurant or further out. Inside it's super humble and still being built out. Bare brick walls, some formica tables and heaters with a small kitchen in back. But the pizza?! It's awesome! Thin-crust, tender and a bit crispy with plenty of great pepperoni, sausage and chorizo. Along with pizza, Sofia's offers up some sandwiches and wings, your basic pizza joint menu. Now I gotta say my star rating is a bit generous. Right now it's all about the food given how new they are. But if you like pizza, Sofia's is doing a lot of things right.
google avatar

Jordan D.

Yelp
The pizza was great and the slices were massive. The lunch special is awesome. Two slices and a drink for around five dollars. Can't beat it!
google avatar

Fredric B.

Yelp
Humble family owned latino pizza place. The pizza was very good. Light thin crust with fresh toppings and a good crunch. I had LaGuerra ricotta parmigian pine nuts and arugula and pesto . Nicely done. Will return to try other flavor pizza.
google avatar

Yelp
I just tried Sofia's Pizza for the first time the other day, and it was great! I was drawn to the menu because they seemed to have some unique pizza options. I tried the East Durham, which has collard greens, bacon, and serrano peppers. The bacon was nice and crisp, and the peppers provided just the right amount of kick. The 14" pizza was a great size and a good value for the cost. I do agree with some reviews here that the crust was maybe the one drawback of this pizza. It was a little dry on the pie I ordered. However, this really didn't ruin my overall enjoyment of the pizza, and I definitely plan to return to this cute neighborhood pizza spot again.

Yelp
Our friends that live nearby just took us here for dinner, and WOW what a gem!! We can't stop talking about what amazing pizza this place serves, that's so unpretentious and inexpensive but still so GOOD! With a small, reasonably-sized menu that covers all the basics but still has some exciting blends, the food here really wows! We had the East Durham, with collard greens, bacon, and serrano peppers, and the Italiano, with salami, sausage, cherry peppers, and kalamata olives. Both of these pizzas were incredibly delicious and LARGE for only $16 and $17!! The wings were great too with quality meat and homemade dips! Oh and the beer!! They keep it simple with just three local brews, for just $3!! Four people with a pizza, beers, garlic bread and wings was under $50! The atmosphere is just too cute. It's not pretentious, not fancy, and not too big, just enough room for several tables, a register, and a pizza window, all you need really. Tons of space outside for a patio, and a charming second building with the bathrooms and the main kitchen. It's a neat and different type of place and we just loved it. Oh and the owner is super friendly! Our friends come here often so he came out to see us and ask us how we're doing and how's the food, he was so sweet! We can't wait to go back and try the subs and pickup dinner, even though we live all the way in South Durham!

Yelp
This one of the newer businesses in Durham since being gentrified; This Pizzaria is dope ; I Love their food and I just don't eat anyone's Pizza - So if you're in the area - Stop by to eat in for a slice or two - or pick up a pie to take home;; I'm sure you won't leave disappointed --- Oh one more thing, if you get sausage on your Pizza - You would be blown away - I don't know what kind they use - but it's spicy-delicious & delectable !!!!!!!
google avatar

Adam V.

Yelp
Pizza that is excellent, affordable, and massive! I have never had a bad experience with Sofia's Pizza. The staff is friendly, and they make some of the best pizza in Durham.
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
This was a find. Called one of the more hyped pizza joints and the wait was an hour plus. Called Sofia's and they were very nice. Suggested paper plates and double cut for kids. Took payment over the phone and ran it out to the car. Best part? Solid NY style pie!! We all loved the pizza! Kids, mom, and dad really loved it and will likely be back before heading home from this trip. It was ready in 15 minutes and is now clearly highly recommended by this reviewer.
google avatar

Lindsay L.

Yelp
Good pizza and good Philly cheesesteak! The crust had a good flavor. The food is also really fairly priced. And the pizzas are huge! We order an 18inch and it fed my entire family of four plus leftovers! Ordering online was easy. And for the reviewer who said it was in the hood - it is not! Just because you see black and brown people around an establishment doesn't mean it's in the hood. I would have felt perfectly fine and safe eating outside if we were able to!! This will now be our go-to for local pizza.
google avatar

Natalia S.

Yelp
The deeply unfortunate thing about this quarantine situation is that I always want pizza but can't eat gluten OR cheese. UGH. BUT let me tell you: Sofia's came to the rescue! They have maybe the best cauliflower-based crust I've had in the Triangle so far. We ordered two pizzas: one veggie, and one gluten-free supreme with no cheese (I added Daiya when it came home lol). According to my partner, the veggie was great, had lots of flavor, tons of veggies, and was baked to perfection! The gluten-free crust comes in 12 inch, well baked, looked like real crust! The supreme was awesome and had everything you'd want in a supreme: lots of different meats and veggies. We also ordered wings-the lemon pepper was great and the chipotle sauce was def homemade, which is great. Ordering online was SUPER easy and the curbside pick-up was no problem. Very excited to try other pizzas of theirs (I'm looking at you the East Durham!) and can't wait to try them in store one day :)
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
Great neighborhood pizza place. The food is fresh and good across the board. The staff is friendly and the prices are very reasonable. Don't waste your money on a conveyor belt pizza when this hand made pizza is available for around the same price.

Karin Y.

Yelp
You know when you're in the mood for a really tasty, low key pizza that'll make you excited to eat the leftovers? That's this pizza. A really flavorful crust with great toppings and one of the best pizza sauces I've had. I went to work the next day and told everyone they need to try Sofia's Pizza.
google avatar

Jason K.

Yelp
Do you know what Sofia in Italian means? Flavorless. I'm sorry. I know. You see the images here on Yelp of the pizza and it looks amazing. I know. When you get the pizza it looks just like the images. The problem is that it unfortunately tastes like the images. If you were able to eat pixels, it would taste like the pizza. I'm actually perplexed at how they've managed to remove the flavor. I wonder what type of process they used. It's too bad. The staff is cool. Good atmosphere. Just an absence of flavor. Sorry.
google avatar

Mackenzie S.

Yelp
Really great NY-style pizza with inventive flavor combos. I especially love the La Guera (pesto, peppers, arugula and pine nut) and East Durham (collards, bacon, and chili peppers). The pizzas are a great value for the price. Friendly staff. I definitely recommend giving this place a try!

Karthik R.

Yelp
We like the pizza and the garlic knots. Prompt service and consistent taste. You can't go wrong with them
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
Definitely agree with another reviewer below that they don't appear to add any seasoning whatsoever to their pizza dough. No salt, no sugar. It's nearly devoid of flavor entirely and is not pleasant. The cheese sticks? Please do not order them. They are tasteless. Supposedly a garlic and cheese bread, but not a single drop of garlic was used in the making of the breadsticks that I received, and barely any cheese. Mostly just the tasteless crust. The pizza toppings were pretty fun and original, hence the +1 star, but being on top of this crust rendered it pretty moot. I was really excited to try this place, but it just was not good.
google avatar

Katie T.

Yelp
Given such recent positive reviews, my husband and I ordered a pizza and chicken tenders for delivery. The large pizza with sausage, serrano peppers and mushrooms was bland with the toppings concentrated towards the bottoms of each slice. The dough didn't cook evenly. The chicken tenders were overly salted, and the ranch served was dill-heavy and congealed. No complaints on delivery service. The product itself didn't stand up at all to what other reviewers have shared. This is a far cry from NY style pizza. As a carb fan, I never leave a pizza slice behind. I left them all behind on this one.
google avatar

Allison A.

Yelp
We wanted to try something new instead of the same old pizza so we tried Sofia's. We had the Italian Pizza and loved the toppings. I was not crazy about the crust but my husband liked it. I just thought it was kind of bland and boring. The chicken wings were really good and very meaty!
google avatar

Kathryn S.

Yelp
We moved to NC about 18 months ago and we are kicking ourselves for waiting this long to try Sofia's! We ordered takeout--order was ready on time. My husband got a large pepperoni/hot wing combo that was on promotion; and I got a gluten-free East Durham. Super delicious cauliflower crust, and the combo of sauce plus peppers, bacon and collard greens was so tasty. The wings were the unexpected hit of our order! Meaty wings, delicious sauce with tons of flavor (both chipotle and Buffalo), and awesome homemade ranch (and my husband is suuuuper picky when it comes to his ranch dressing). We will definitely be ordering from here again.
google avatar

Bonnie L.

Yelp
I was hugely excited when Sofia's opened, and am still hugely excited that they are in the neighborhood. We order from them weekly, usually pick up and most of the time it's ready when we get there (some 15-20 minutes after we order) but sometimes it hasn't even been started yet and it seems unrelated to how busy they are. We really like our favorite, the La Guera, which has spicy italian peppers on it. And I really like the prices. I was impressed when I ordered a salad that it wasn't iceberg or romaine lettuce but actually a very nice spring lettuce mix. My complaints all come down to the seasoning. It's like they don't add salt or any other seasonings to the dough or something. We once got the cheesy breadsticks and I would not recommend them. They were bland and tasted like nothing. The veggie pizza was totally good and at $15 for a large is a great deal for a non-chain restaurant. But anything that doesn't have boldly flavored toppings really falls flat, which is disappointing. If you get a bite of crust by itself it honestly holds no flavor. None. Like, I'm not used to tasting nothing when I'm chewing on pizza crust... Overall I love them and am excited that they are in business and will continue to support them as they continue to grow and improve. But my willingness to stray outside of the things we know we like is diminished with the number of other items I try.
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
My partner and I recently discovered Sofia's and realized we were in the delivery range. We ordered for the first time tonight (a pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, and spinach, and garlic knots) and it was all delicious. I got the order confirmation email at 6:04 (noting that it would be delivered between 6:40-6:47) and the delivery person was here at 6:32! Such fast service, and so tasty. We're all about supporting local restaurants and Sofia's will definitely be one of our new regulars!
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
I was excited to try the pizza based off the reviews, but I was a bit let down. As other people have mentioned, the dough really is flavorless. It just tastes like nothing. I don't know if they need to add some salt, or maybe spread some garlic butter on the crust or what. I didn't even want to eat it. Another disappointment is the cheese. I love to pull a slice out of the box and have those oooey gooey strands of mozzarella cheese tugging to the slice next to it. That's when you know you have some good cheese on your pizza. Unfortunately, I saw nothing like that getting my slices out of the box. It's like when you're getting a piece of pizza cold out of the box, but this pizza was piping hot. Seriously bummed about that. The pizza (I got a pepperoni) itself was alright. The pepperonis taste great and the cheese is passable, but I doubt it's anything I'll eat again. I may go back to Sofia's Pizza to try one of their subs or wings. The price ($13 for an 18" pizza) is great, but not enough to convince me to give the pizza a second chance.
google avatar

Maurice Y.

Yelp
Decided to give this place a try and I am so glad I did. I tried the Philly Sub and it was affordable, "philling" and delicious. I will be back. The place which use to be an old auto repair shop is small but cozy. Retro but modern. I really like the vibe. Next time I will try one of the Mexican sodas. They look really good. It's great to see Durham coming alive. The parking stinks but the effort is well worth it. This place should be on your must try list.

Katie O.

Yelp
So I wanted to support a fairly new local business and ordered a pizza at 830 through the online site for delivery. I received the text updates at 915 that they were delivering my order. Then I got a call five minutes later that I live 13 miles away (I don't, that's the long route - I live 8 miles away) and that they only deliver within 3 miles so I could pick it up or get a refund. 1. Fix the site so it only allows a certain radius. 2. Aren't you losing more money by not delivering and wasting it? 3. The girl on the phone said "well the website says 3 miles" like somehow it was my fault. I don't write reviews, I downloaded the app just for this. I'm sure the pizza is good but your customer service is not.

Krista D.

Yelp
Do not order from this restaurant using Grubhub. They call them to tell them what the order is, and they only listed the first ingredient on our pizza, so we paid for a supreme and only got pepperoni. They don't tell you that they don't see your full order prior to ordering. The lady I spoke with at the restaurant told me that I should use Door Dash because it's better in her opinion. Nothing was offered to rectify the poor customer service. Regardless of how good the pizza is, we won't be ordering from a restaurant with this type of service again.

Ga D.

Yelp
So this new place is on the edge of gentrification in east Durham. Marked free street parking and a small lot, this was an old service station. Now it is a glassed in gem with crispy crust pizza. Right now the view through the windows is old Durham and the food we've tried on our first visit was yummy and reasonably priced. Looking forward to many more pizzas to eat in or take out. Give them a try. Open for lunch through evening daily.
google avatar

Stephan M.

Yelp
Today must have been a bad day for them. I'm sitting here with only one other person waiting on my order of 2 Pizzas i had placed 45 minutes ago and was told would be done 20 minutes ago. I hope it at least tastes as good as last time. Update: I received my 2 pizzas after 50min from when I called and ordered and the two people who ordered after I had arrived (i had arrived after 20min as i was told that's when the order would be ready) got their pizza before me. The pizza itself was ok at best. I probably won't order there again any time soon.

Yelp
Sofia's Pizza is just simply terrific. Reasonable rates for the area. Absolutely tasty and also healthy. The customer service is always outstanding. Sofia's Pizza = A must try.

Yelp
This is a great pizza place! Extremely tasty different styles & original pies! I have been there twice and tried different kinds of pies there all great so far!! And staff is very friendly. Place is extremely clean also! Great work & welcome to the neighborhood!!

Yelp
Cute little Italian place. Not the best part of town but worth the visit. Had the lasagna. Will be back for chicken parmigiana or pizza!

Anitra B.

Yelp
Staff was so friendly and welcoming! While the signs are #Durm are changing! This location is truly some #GoodHumans bringing some great pizza to the local area!!! Definitely going back. #SupportLocal IG: @durhampopup

Yelp
I came here a few days ago for lunch with a friend. This place was very cool as soon as we walked through the door... so that was a plus. As for the food.. I WAS BLOWN AWAY!!! This was some amazing pizza. They have a lunch special that is like two slices and a drink for $5 and I definetly took advantage of this deal!! I also hear the lasagnna is outstanding so I will definetly be back :)
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Fantastic thin crust style pizza. Truly original custom pizzas, I barely made it back to work with digging in because it smelled sooooo good. I can't wait to try them again! Be sure to order extra because you'll want the leftovers. I'm excited to try their sandwiches.

Evan H.

Yelp
Wow can't believe it took me so long to try this place out! The pizza is light and fluffy but extremely tasty. The owners seem really nice as well. Only downfall? It's in the MIDDLE of the hood.

Andrew B.

Yelp
Very good pizza overall! Ingredients seem fresh and the place seems very nice and well kept. There is not really a good place to park and the area external to the restaurant is a little run down. I have been looking for a quality pizza place in Durham like this though for a while. And the slices are enormous! The only addition I would add is a little more sauce on the pizza. We had asked for some on the side and added and it took the pizza to the next level! Very glad we found this spot and will be back for more.

Yelp
Beautiful old service station has been converted into a pizzeria that is being run by some Old East Durham locals. It's a great place run by some friendly people. Solid pizza!
