At Son Del North, riceless burritos get right to the point - Review - New York - The Infatuation

"Son Del North won’t put rice in your burrito. That’s kind of their thing. Inspired by Northern Mexico, this counter-service spot that started on the Lower East Side offers a protein-packed product with no unnecessary fillers and ample melted cheese. The result is rather gooey, but incredibly satisfying, thanks in large part to the stretchy Sonoran flour tortillas. There are few different routes you can go—including shrimp, chicken, and vegan chorizo—but start with the smoky carne asada. If you’re looking for a meal that’ll only run you around $10, the plain bean and cheese is another great, if slightly monotonous, option. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute Food Rundown Carne Asada This is what you came for. Cut into ragged chunks, the carne asada is so thoroughly grilled it tastes a bit smoky. Don't forget about the green chili dipping sauce on the side. photo credit: Kate Previte Frijol Con Queso The silver medal goes to this burrito stuffed with a simple, gooey mess of beans and cheese. Boring? Slightly. But it's a hefty meal for just $9. photo credit: Kate Previte Breakfast Burrito We had high hopes for the breakfast burrito. Just look at that tortilla. How could you not? But even if you add the optional bacon, this thing mostly just tastes like a pound of scrambled eggs. photo credit: Kate Previte Totopos For a place known for its flour tortillas, Son Del North produces some very good (corn) totopos. They're thick, crackly, and appropriately greasy. photo credit: Kate Previte" - Bryan Kim

Best Affordable Food in the West Village | Eater NY

"A takeout-only spot whose motto is rice-free burritos, emphasizing well-made flour tortillas made in-house and hefty fillings like carne asada and shrimp; the $9 gooey bean-and-cheese is a filling, affordable choice — pre-order to avoid the wait, then post up on a bench at nearby Demo Square." - Melissa McCart

A couple of things… I was somewhat skeptical about there being no rice. But I was met with a well filled burrito. The steak was flavorful and incredibly tender. The beans were also very well done and complimented the meat as well as you’d hope. The cheese was clearly melted and incorporated well. Normally I could live without it, but the guacamole was definitely needed and worth the extra two bucks. 8.5/10 on the burrito. I must say though, even for what you get, the pricing is pretty outrageous. Regardless of how good it is, a burrito shouldn’t cost $19 and change after tax. At the very least, guacamole shouldn’t be extra if the burrito is already $16 to begin with. I realize the cost of goods is up these days, but you can do better than that. This would’ve been a place I frequent on a regular basis, but considering I can get an equally satisfying burrito five minutes away for $13 flat, it won’t be.

Delicious grill/pressed burritos. Milanese and Chorizo burritos were each amazing in their own right

Google
new location in the west village. this west coast style burrito is the best burrito i’ve had! no rice just beans + guac + carne. (pro tip get extra guac! )

Tried this Mexican spot for the first time and only had the vegan burrito and it did not disappoint! The flavors were bold and well-balanced, the portion was satisfying. You can tell they put thought into making their vegan options just as delicious as anything else on the menu. It’s a little on the pricier side, but honestly, the quality made it worth it. I’ll definitely be going back to try more. If you’re vegan or just looking for a solid plant-based option or not, this place is a win!

Great spot. Same crew as the Lower East Side location, but now with more space to stand and eat inside. We were the first customers at this location, so we got to talk to the staff - they're the friendliest people and absolutely deserve your business. Very clean and healthy burritos, not greasy or bogged down by rice, just quality ingredients through and through.

Got the steak burrito. As someone coming from SF, I guess it’s.. ok? There are not really good burritos in NYC, so maybe it’s one of the better ones, but in absolute terms it’s pretty underwhelming, especially given its $20 price tag.

The shrimp burrito is probably one of the best burritos I ever had. If you love spice, this burrito is a MUST. Shout out to the owners who work here. They're super dope and kind.

Google
Had the breakfast burrito and it was delicious. My partner got the carne asada and enjoyed it too, however for lunch both burritos plus chips came out to $50 which is a little steep for a casual Mexican spot. Chips were fine. I say to save $, just get a burrito as it’s enough food. Only seating option is outdoors with just a few high-too tables, it’s tiny inside.

Yelp
I came on a hot Saturday for lunch with husband. A great location across from the park and in close proximity to all the neighborhood has to offer. We split both the chicken and steak burrito and a a fresh hibiscus drink. The chicken was definitely my favorite, I love grilled meats. Hubs loved his steak burrito but I found it to be too heavy for me, very flavorful though. The drink was a bit too sweet for my liking but I can see other people would enjoy. The sauces on the side were fantastic and I really enjoyed eating them with the burritos, they added a lot. Will definitely be back! The line may look daunting but it moves quick and the service is very friendly and patient.

Yelp
Heard amazing things about this place in the east village and was very excited to try the west village location. It lived up to my expectations. Exceptional burrito. I got the carne asada which was perfectly savory, charred steak, caramelized onions and hints of tomato salsa. It comes with a "dipping salsa" that is so good it was critical to the experience. I did not get guac because guac is too good and I wanted see how it was on it's own. That's how good it was. Now the main thing here is it's $18 for carne asada ($16 for pollo asado). I ask myself if I would pay the extra $5 over a chipotle burrito? Yes, yes I definitely would. Would I pay the extra $8 over the one other good Mexican place. Uncertain. Planning to dine-in would be crazy. It's so small. But Father Demo square is two feet away and Wash Sq Park is 3 blocks for overflow seating.

Yelp
Same as with the one on the LES . Arguably one of the best 3 burritos in NYC. Either chicken, beef or shrimp options are fantastic. Fresh , large , great sauce on the side . The next door little garden makes that an excellent lunch. Highly recommended!!!!

Yelp
The first couple bites were great but towards the end I got sick of just eating so much egg. Idk for $17-18, this is expensive for what they give you in a breakfast burrito, and this is without any meat or guac. It's very simple but doesn't hold a candle to Ceremonia bakeshop's breakfast burrito. I would possibly come back here to try their non-breakfast burritos.

Yelp
Son del North is known for their Sonoran-style burritos, and they recently opened up in West Village. Their menu is pretty straightforward, offering burritos, sides, and drinks - we ordered: +the Carne Asada burrito - grilled steak, grilled onions, came with beans, cheese, and salsa roja; note that guacamole is not included automatically anymore, so it would be an extra charge to add it +a Frijol con Queso - beans and cheese +a Camaron Ranchero - with shrimp, chile ancho marinade, and pico de gallo, in addition to the beans, cheese, and grilled onions +and, the Cauliflower Chorizo con Papas - a vegan option with vegan chorizo, rajas, and salsa verde, in addition to the beans, cheese, and grilled onions Try their housemade agua frescas, too, to wash it all down! Staff were friendly! +Sonoran-style burritos +friendly service

Yelp
Burrito was really good, was expecting it to be a little weird since there was no rice. I was pleasently surprised, I wish there was somewhere to sit and it wasn't so hot inside. Other than that I give it 4.5 stars, the steak was great and the guacamole was good too!

Yelp
Burrito store front with the peeps cooking where you can see so you know it's FRESH. We had the steak burrito and the shrimp burrito and chips and salsa. Really good and filling. Like come hungry, ok. There's outdoor high tops and small mini stools inside. We came in the dead of summer heat and just sat at the indoor stools and inhaled our burritos. Prices great and just fresh food. Highly recommend if you're looking for a quick bite while on the run in the city or take home. So good!

Yelp
I was very pleasantly surprised! Really delicious. The size was a little disappointing but it actually was filling. Nice and warm. Loved the peppers inside.

Yelp
Outstanding. $16 gets you a large burrito that is 95% meat. It's appropriate that this place replaced Cocu, which was also a competent high-protein spot.

Yelp
Never gravitate towards burritos, but the Carne Asada burrito made me reconsider. Chock-full of tasty steak, guacamole and onions, and better off with no rice (felt lighter if that's possible?). Minimal seating in the shop. Recommend!

Ryan S.

Yelp
The BEST burrito I've ever eaten. Come here if you need protein. They're fast and have many options. One burrito is $15-20, which is fair.

Yelp
Just like the East Village OG location. Great fillings (no rice of course), great tortillas. Thanks for coming to the West Village.
