At Son Del North, riceless burritos get right to the point - Review - New York - The Infatuation

"Son Del North won’t put rice in your burrito. That’s kind of their thing. Inspired by Northern Mexico, this counter-service spot that started on the Lower East Side offers a protein-packed product with no unnecessary fillers and ample melted cheese. The result is rather gooey, but incredibly satisfying, thanks in large part to the stretchy Sonoran flour tortillas. There are few different routes you can go—including shrimp, chicken, and vegan chorizo—but start with the smoky carne asada. If you’re looking for a meal that’ll only run you around $10, the plain bean and cheese is another great, if slightly monotonous, option. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute Food Rundown Carne Asada This is what you came for. Cut into ragged chunks, the carne asada is so thoroughly grilled it tastes a bit smoky. Don't forget about the green chili dipping sauce on the side. photo credit: Kate Previte Frijol Con Queso The silver medal goes to this burrito stuffed with a simple, gooey mess of beans and cheese. Boring? Slightly. But it's a hefty meal for just $9. photo credit: Kate Previte Breakfast Burrito We had high hopes for the breakfast burrito. Just look at that tortilla. How could you not? But even if you add the optional bacon, this thing mostly just tastes like a pound of scrambled eggs. photo credit: Kate Previte Totopos For a place known for its flour tortillas, Son Del North produces some very good (corn) totopos. They're thick, crackly, and appropriately greasy. photo credit: Kate Previte" - Bryan Kim

The Best Restaurants In The West Village - New York - The Infatuation

"The best burrito in the West Village doesn’t have any rice in it. Son Del North doesn’t believe in the stuff, and you’re not going to miss it. The counter-service spot that started in the Lower East Side stuffs their stretchy Sonoran flour tortillas with beans, salsa, and your choice of protein, glued together with ample gooey cheese. Go the carne asada route, and keep in mind there’s very little seating." - bryan kim, will hartman, sonal shah, molly fitzpatrick

Best Affordable Food in the West Village | Eater NY

"A takeout-only spot whose motto is rice-free burritos, emphasizing well-made flour tortillas made in-house and hefty fillings like carne asada and shrimp; the $9 gooey bean-and-cheese is a filling, affordable choice — pre-order to avoid the wait, then post up on a bench at nearby Demo Square." - Melissa McCart

Seems Like Raoul’s Is Expanding Next Door in Soho | Eater NY

"A takeout stand that opened on the Lower East Side in 2024, it is known for rice-free burritos and Sonora-style flour tortillas and was an immediate hit. Annisha Garcia, originally from Tijuana, Mexico and the 2021 Chopped Grand Champion, is opening a second location; an Instagram announcement yesterday stated the new West Village address will be 26 Carmine Street, near Bleecker Street." - Emma Orlow

Google
A couple of things… I was somewhat skeptical about there being no rice. But I was met with a well filled burrito. The steak was flavorful and incredibly tender. The beans were also very well done and complimented the meat as well as you’d hope. The cheese was clearly melted and incorporated well. Normally I could live without it, but the guacamole was definitely needed and worth the extra two bucks. 8.5/10 on the burrito. I must say though, even for what you get, the pricing is pretty outrageous. Regardless of how good it is, a burrito shouldn’t cost $19 and change after tax. At the very least, guacamole shouldn’t be extra if the burrito is already $16 to begin with. I realize the cost of goods is up these days, but you can do better than that. This would’ve been a place I frequent on a regular basis, but considering I can get an equally satisfying burrito five minutes away for $13 flat, it won’t be.

No seating besides a couple tables outside and packed on the weekends due to hungover people door dashing (lol) but got the shrimp burrito and my friend got the breakfast one. Super delicious, hardly any beans but as mentioned good. Would recommend!!

I ordered Camaron Ranchero (🍤🌯) online, and it was ready in about 10 minutes. The burrito was good, flavorful, and not too heavy for my stomach, but it was very spicy 🌶️. I love shrimps, but unfortunately, I have to skip ordering it until they offer a mild or non-spicy versions.

Google
new location in the west village. this west coast style burrito is the best burrito i’ve had! no rice just beans + guac + carne. (pro tip get extra guac! )

Google
Delicious grill/pressed burritos. Milanese and Chorizo burritos were each amazing in their own right

Google
Clean spot, yummy burrito with lots of meat, but it was still overpriced. We waited ~30 minutes for our 2 burritos. We got 1 steak and 1 chicken. They were both good, but steak was better. It’s not a lot of ingredients, but good quality.

Google
Great spot. Same crew as the Lower East Side location, but now with more space to stand and eat inside. We were the first customers at this location, so we got to talk to the staff - they're the friendliest people and absolutely deserve your business. Very clean and healthy burritos, not greasy or bogged down by rice, just quality ingredients through and through.

Google
Tried this Mexican spot for the first time and only had the vegan burrito and it did not disappoint! The flavors were bold and well-balanced, the portion was satisfying. You can tell they put thought into making their vegan options just as delicious as anything else on the menu. It’s a little on the pricier side, but honestly, the quality made it worth it. I’ll definitely be going back to try more. If you’re vegan or just looking for a solid plant-based option or not, this place is a win!

Yelp
I came on a hot Saturday for lunch with husband. A great location across from the park and in close proximity to all the neighborhood has to offer. We split both the chicken and steak burrito and a a fresh hibiscus drink. The chicken was definitely my favorite, I love grilled meats. Hubs loved his steak burrito but I found it to be too heavy for me, very flavorful though. The drink was a bit too sweet for my liking but I can see other people would enjoy. The sauces on the side were fantastic and I really enjoyed eating them with the burritos, they added a lot. Will definitely be back! The line may look daunting but it moves quick and the service is very friendly and patient.

Yelp
I love that we're trying to do more authentic and tasty mexican food in NYC. This spot has brought the Burrito Norteno to NYC which is prevalent in Arizona or Northern Mexico and really great. The burritos at Son del North are a good version of these, but not great. I think the best and most authentic actually is the bean and cheese burrito. It really hits the mark for a bean and cheese Burrito Norteno. The refried beans are a little more healthy (less pork/lard/fat) than what I've had when in Mexico or the Southwest, but still really good. The Carne asada is also great, and the flavor of the carne asada is great, but it's lacking the juiciness and fat that flows through the burritos I remember. The dipping sauce you get with it certainly helps bring up the juiciness quotient, but there's still an opportunity to make it juicier. Now mind you, this is better than most mexican food in the city still, and the service shows that there is love and care put into each burrito including grilling the burrito after making which is truly wonderful. If it's cold outside it's going to be hard to find space to eat these burritos, but that's okay, you can find a corner or bench and do so, so just walk with them. They're much more manageable than a Super Burrito or something like that. I'll be back, because NYC does need more food like this, but it does not win my Southern California seal of approval for great mexican food.

Yelp
No Flavor at All,,MOST PEOPLE THINK A BURRITO OR A TACO ITS JUST RICE AND BEANS... W R O N G !!!!!! I Totally REGRETTED expending my coins. I think if you guys [ owners or chefs) watch a You Tube Tutorial how to Make Burritos or Mexican food it'll works better..

Yelp
Got the Carne Asada. Uhm. Not mindblown, but I get the concept. My fav was the little yellow-green color hot cause that came with it!

Yelp
Worth the hype. I don't usually love beans and I loved the bean and cheese burrito. The green sauce is soooo good too. I am a rice lover but the tortillas were so fresh and delish i didn't mind there not being rice.

Yelp
Heard amazing things about this place in the east village and was very excited to try the west village location. It lived up to my expectations. Exceptional burrito. I got the carne asada which was perfectly savory, charred steak, caramelized onions and hints of tomato salsa. It comes with a "dipping salsa" that is so good it was critical to the experience. I did not get guac because guac is too good and I wanted see how it was on it's own. That's how good it was. Now the main thing here is it's $18 for carne asada ($16 for pollo asado). I ask myself if I would pay the extra $5 over a chipotle burrito? Yes, yes I definitely would. Would I pay the extra $8 over the one other good Mexican place. Uncertain. Planning to dine-in would be crazy. It's so small. But Father Demo square is two feet away and Wash Sq Park is 3 blocks for overflow seating.

Yelp
I got the shrimp burrito this time and that was great. Loved every bite of it! My friend got the steak burrito and loved it too.

Yelp
I'm sorry but this is TOTALLY worth the hype. The bean and cheese burrito really is IT. I absolutely love that they deliver to long distances as well (added delivery fee but saves commute time if you live far or are busy). The burrito's tortilla is really what makes the difference. I don't think I've ever had a tortilla that perfect. Everyone must get a bean and cheese burrito here. It is absolutely insane!

Yelp
Got a couple to split with coworkers and we liked it in this order (best to last) - pollo, cauliflower chorizo, carne, shrimp. loved the green sauce that came with it and we ordered pickled veggies on the side.

Yelp
Finally was able to try Son Del North for lunch. It was honestly pretty packed and they had a lot of online orders, so I would recommend ordering ahead or not going at peak hours. We ordered inside and there were a few stools to sit at and some tables outside to wait at. I opted for the viral bean and cheese burrito, I was pleasantly surprised at the flavor and the green sauce on the side really makes it great. I will say, if you want more texture variety this is not for you, the inside is essentially the consistency of mashed potatoes. It was very filling, I was not able to finish this in one sitting so beware. I will say, watching them fill up the chicken/steak burritos in the assembly line they are definitely very generous with their protein portions which is great. In terms of prices for the area I thought it was somewhat reasonable as well. Overall, this is not something I see myself getting often since it was so heavy to me, but I am glad I tried it!

Yelp
Got the bean and cheese but need to order something else next time: their tortilla makes their burrito for sure. Service was ok but took a while and they don't really have any seating

Yelp
Had to give this place a visit once I heard they opened a West Village location. I ordered the steak burrito and it was excellent, arguably one of the best burritos I've had in NYC. Great portion of steak included for the price point, and the burrito was large enough to split between two people. Get extra green sauce on the side for dipping. Already planning my next visit!

Yelp
Son del North is known for their Sonoran-style burritos, and they recently opened up in West Village. Their menu is pretty straightforward, offering burritos, sides, and drinks - we ordered: +the Carne Asada burrito - grilled steak, grilled onions, came with beans, cheese, and salsa roja; note that guacamole is not included automatically anymore, so it would be an extra charge to add it +a Frijol con Queso - beans and cheese +a Camaron Ranchero - with shrimp, chile ancho marinade, and pico de gallo, in addition to the beans, cheese, and grilled onions +and, the Cauliflower Chorizo con Papas - a vegan option with vegan chorizo, rajas, and salsa verde, in addition to the beans, cheese, and grilled onions Try their housemade agua frescas, too, to wash it all down! Staff were friendly! +Sonoran-style burritos +friendly service

Yelp
Same as with the one on the LES . Arguably one of the best 3 burritos in NYC. Either chicken, beef or shrimp options are fantastic. Fresh , large , great sauce on the side . The next door little garden makes that an excellent lunch. Highly recommended!!!!

Yelp
I was very pleasantly surprised! Really delicious. The size was a little disappointing but it actually was filling. Nice and warm. Loved the peppers inside.

Yelp
Burrito store front with the peeps cooking where you can see so you know it's FRESH. We had the steak burrito and the shrimp burrito and chips and salsa. Really good and filling. Like come hungry, ok. There's outdoor high tops and small mini stools inside. We came in the dead of summer heat and just sat at the indoor stools and inhaled our burritos. Prices great and just fresh food. Highly recommend if you're looking for a quick bite while on the run in the city or take home. So good!

Chris L.

Yelp
It's a small store serving to order. The staff was kind and quick. The vegan option was delicious and the salsa was perfect. No seating inside but a couple standing tables outside. Cool area to wander.
google avatar

Tim O.

Yelp
Outstanding. $16 gets you a large burrito that is 95% meat. It's appropriate that this place replaced Cocu, which was also a competent high-protein spot.
google avatar

Evelyn H.

Yelp
Never gravitate towards burritos, but the Carne Asada burrito made me reconsider. Chock-full of tasty steak, guacamole and onions, and better off with no rice (felt lighter if that's possible?). Minimal seating in the shop. Recommend!
google avatar

Jaynee J.

Yelp
Excellent burritos-no rice just tasty chicken, beans. Also tried the chips and guac. Great flavor and great crunch.

Laura R.

Yelp
They are lowering their standards. The last 3 times we ordered the carne asada burrito it tasted like all the steak was burnt. Probably wont get it again. We tried to give it a couple more tries because we loved how it tasted before but it just keeps getting worse and its a $17 burnt burrito, definitely not worth it anymore.
google avatar

Ad M.

Yelp
Burrito was really good, was expecting it to be a little weird since there was no rice. I was pleasently surprised, I wish there was somewhere to sit and it wasn't so hot inside. Other than that I give it 4.5 stars, the steak was great and the guacamole was good too!

Ryan S.

Yelp
The BEST burrito I've ever eaten. Come here if you need protein. They're fast and have many options. One burrito is $15-20, which is fair.

Mike M.

Yelp
Just like the East Village OG location. Great fillings (no rice of course), great tortillas. Thanks for coming to the West Village.

David A.

Yelp
Great food, reasonable prices, staff so friendly. This is easily among the best burritos in nyc

Babo S.

Yelp
bean and cheese burrito was so incredible wow i order it for delivery once a week now
