"Located in Knightsville, the buzzing center of South Portland’s restaurant scene, SoPo Seafood is a super-friendly local market and raw bar. While you can pick up a wide variety of seafood here to take home and cook, the expansive menu of raw bar choices, sandwiches, and rice bowls (add your choice of smoked salmon, ceviche, and tartare) should not be missed. Nor should the lobster roll, with meat served warm or cold and heaped onto a fresh-baked split-top bun from the bread mavens at nearby Little Spruce Baking Company. Feeling extra fancy? Order it crowned with caviar for maximal ocean flavor in every bite." - ByBriana Bononcini

"SoPo Seafood isn’t in Portland proper, but it’s worth a short trip over the bridge to slurp some oysters, sip some wine, and maybe even buy some mollusks to take home with you. The raw bar focuses on highlighting the best and freshest the Gulf of Maine has to offer. You already know they’ve got the essentials like oysters on the half shell, but the best things are their takes on classics such as their gigantic lobster rolls, smoked seafood, and caviar with blinis. Or choose your own adventure with a mix-and-match oyster shooter where you can select a spirit and mixer (like tequila and Bloody Mary) to accompany your shucked shellfish. There’s a long wooden bar along with a few tables, and the whole space is bright, airy, and screams "I’m in Maine eating seafood." - Alana Dao

Incredible prices and even better seafood. Fresh, ever-changing menu with the tastiest raw scallops I've ever had at $3 a piece. The Bloody Mary is 10/10 and the oyster on top restored my belief in east coast bivalves. Everything on the menu is delicious. This has got to be my new favorite restaurant in Portland. Will be returning as frequently as I can.

Came here on a Sunday around 1, not crowded at all! We got three different types of oysters, each one was better than the last. I also got a lobster roll and it was absolutely delicious. Perfect amount of lobster and mayo. Service was a little slow but I know it takes time to shuck the oysters and it’s pretty much on the off season. Definitely will come back!

Google
These guys are the best! I moved to Pittsburgh after 20 years seacoast Maine, eating Gulf of Maine haddock weekly! They shipped 38 FRESH GoM haddock fillets to me overnight. Free ship over $300! They are gorgeous and smell divine! They freeze extremely well. I'm set for the year!

Honestly some of the best seafood I’ve ever eaten. I’m from Florida so I know what fresh seafood tastes like and this is superior to anything I’ve eaten, expect for in the Keys. I would hands down recommend this place to anyone! I loved it. So fresh and delicious. I can’t wait to go back again!

Google
SoPo Seafood Bar ,Portland Maine, I decided to give this place a try and I was disappointed ,Sopo rice bowl garnished with kimchee style seaweed and grilled tuna over rice was extremely bland, eventhough it was accompanied with eel sauce which was thinned out too much. Lobster soup should have more lobster and veggies, potatoes, too thinned out with mostly broth, very disappointing, crab cakes was disappointing, too minced, crab should be more chunky, flavor profile too muted. Spicy shrimp roll was also disappointing no flavor profile very muted.Shellfish sampler 4 Oyster, 4 clams,4shrimp had nice brine and super fresh. If your in the mood for nice maine oysters try sopo. You can also purchase fresh haddock, salmon, oysters to go.

Google
It's about a 15-minute drive from downtown Portland, Maine. It's well worth it. The seafood is fresh! We got two oysters special with seaweed salad, caviar, and jalapeño candied. Oh, it was worth 7 bucks each. Freshness, and it goes well with the other ingredients. We loved every bit. The lobster roll was really good. Fresh lobster and not too much butter. We got the smoke seafood plate. Smoked salmon, scallops, shrimps, and mussels. And we got the spicy seaweed jar to go. Haven't tried that yet. Highly recommend SoPo Seafood.

Google
Great food, even better service, all in a low key setting. Best meal we had in Maine! The oysters, scallops, crab, and lobster rolls were all outstanding!!

Google
All of the seafood is fresh and high quality. Staff is amazing/ super pleasant. Cocktails also unique and delicious. The raw bar options were incredible - especially the “spoon” of the day! Highly recommend to any seafood lovers.

Yelp
Awesome laid back atmosphere with an eclectic menu selection including a fantastic raw bar! The Good: service, food, atmosphere The Bad: the lobster roll (surprisingly) Ok so tried a bunch of stuff - the Shebang is a sampler platter and everything on it was fantastic with blue fin tuna, oysters, little neck clams, caviar, shrimp... the salmon potato chowder (never heard of that before) was delicious! Got some Live scallops and they prepared and dressed them - amazing! Weakest dish was the lobster roll - on my travels through Maine I've been eating a lot of lobster rolls and this one was my least favorite - the bottom half of the bread was super soggy (just didn't hold up), the portion of lobster was low compared to other stops and it was the chewiest lobster roll I've had yet. It was fun w caviar and uni on it for sure! But the bread and lobster were not up to par. Service was fantastic with warm, caring people if you don't mind laid back. I could see how demanding selfish people wouldn't enjoy the service but I definitely prefer kind hearted people that care even if it takes longer so a plus for me! Such an interesting menu it was hard to select what to get but very pleased overall with the experience!

Yelp
Heaven. Heaven .heaven. A lobster oasis in a region of lobster oasis. So many options. Very good service and attentive. Casual set up, nothing over done. Fantastic lobster rolls. Can't wait to go back and grab more! Grade A

Yelp
Stopped by for an early lunch on our way back to Boston, and it was so good. Sat at the bar and had a Thai inspired spicy lobster stew, fresh local oysters, and a scallop roll with browned butter. Incredibly fresh and delicious...some of the best seafood I've ever had in 30 years of visiting Maine. Even tasted my first fresh scallop...wow, such a great experience

Yelp
UPDATE: SoPo is now another one of my go-to's when friends come to town! A recent happy hour included possibly some of the best cold-water little fatties I've had in a long time--and because I didn't note it before, I have to say also that I love the way they tag each variety with a clothespin clipped to the tray so you can identify it. Also, I don't know how it's possible that the staff gets friendlier and more fun every time I visit, but they do!

Kelsey R.

Yelp
Wish I could give this place six or seven or ten stars. So phenomenal. By far the best hot lobster roll I've had in New England. Staff was excellent and super helpful. I also got caviar to go- sturgeon and trout roe - and they packed it on ice for me. Great prices for such high quality. Next time I'm in the area, this will be at the top of my list! They also offer a raw bar and bar. Can't say enough good things!

Lizzie Y.

Yelp
Typically every summer, I try to make the trip to Portland, ME for some shopping and food. SoPo is definitely a must try if you're in the area! They've got some fresh raw scallops that are sweet and delectable. Their bowls are also delicious; Tried the tuna & the salmon. The staff is extremely kind and knowledgeable about all that they offer. Highly recommend!

Kirsten S.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Fun place to try some new things. Service was slow, but super friendly.

Yelp
This was the last stop on our Portland trip. We were deciding between this place and another highly rated option but we took the chance and are so glad we did! This had to be one of the best casual dining experiences in Portland, due to the atmosphere, staff, and the FOOD (not to mention the prices). For those in NYC, it reminded me a bit of Greenpoint Fish & Lobster in that there was a fish counter, small market. This place differed in that it was bright & airy which gave it beachy vibes. Here, there are only a handful of counter seats and around 6-8 tables. Now to the food-- - we had the LOBSTER ROLLS with butter (you can pick your preparation). probably not the best time of year to order lobster but despite that it was delicious, full of lobster meat, with a touch of coarse salt and came with a side of salt & pepper chips. They also include a leaf of lettuce, unexpected to find, but it gave a nice crunch and counter balanced the creaminess of the butter lobster. - we had a few of their "SPOONS"- tuna with a bit of soy, and the special scallop which was super soft, slightly sweet, and combined with roe , crunchy rice and horseradish. - OYSTERS- very solid selection, though liked the pink stripes at Eventide the best. We didn't have drinks due to the long trip back, but they did have a pretty stocked bar. Their Pina Colada mocktail was a nice and refreshing. If you weren't paying attention you would have thought it was the real deal with rum.

Hiromi T.

Yelp
Found this gem as we were looking for a good seafood place to eat during our visit (specifically oysters for my husband lol). Overall, was very impressed by the cozy vibe and interior of this place. They have their place broken out so that you can either buy seafood and various items like furikake flakes, goodies (tees, sweaters, etc.) and a section for dining in. Service was amazing and the owner (i'm assuming) was super helpful and generous! Everything tasted so good and we'll definitely be back again to try the lobster roll and all other menu items!

Ricky S.

Yelp
Flew in from Seattle to vist Maine again. Went to Bug Lighthouse and looked for some Clam Chowder. Place came highly recommended, but I was disappointed. For one I'm in Maine and they didn't have any clam chowder. Settled on what was supposed to be shrimp rool, but the flavor and texture wasn't like shrimp. Wife did say her lobster roll was ok. Price wize, it was tourists prices. For 3 sandwiches and rice bowl with a drink for 1 member it was 90 dollars. Im sure its ok for the cruise ship people that were in port, but not for normal people.

Jiamin Z.

Yelp
Came here 3 times in 4 days...food is very fresh and well presented. The only thing is I wish they use better rice for the Poke Bowl.

Jojo K.

Yelp
This place is exquisite. Excellent deals, great food, simple and delicious wine selection. I'm trying not to repeat places but I can't help myself here.

Stan H.

Yelp
Easy to park and delicious food. The lobster roll (with or without caviar) was not listed on the on-board menu I saw but they were able to make it anyway. Kind of like how Eventide doesn't always offer lobster roll on their menu anymore because it is not their prime item. This could be the case here as well, but then I got lucky it came out delicious anyway. The chips were surprisingly seasoned with salt and pepper and it made me enjoy them a lot more than just regular chips. Is this how they normally make them or do they season it on last minute? The seasonings were very well balanced. The package itself was taped nicely. When I opened it and went to close it again, I was not able to keep it closed. The tape helped keep freshness in. It seemed much care was put into the package and food. Friendly staff. Guy who served me felt bad for staying seated and it didn't bug me one bit. He remembered me real well when my order needed to be picked up. I came in about 25 minutes after I ordered and it was done in about 15 minutes. He even said he hoped to see me again and I (think I) said thank you. I was in a rush to do other things so had it to go. If that guy happens to be reading this and maybe wanted more than just my patronization, he should totally create a or use your Yelp account and reach out to me, haha. Same guy was serving an elderly group when I came back. Business was slow atm because most people had to work most likely during the day of Friday.

Anne G.

Yelp
My friend and I had a wonderful dinner here on October 17. The chowder, a serving of oysters on the half shell, and a lobster roll put a very happy smile on our faces. So Po was worth the drive from Wilmington Delaware!

Jim D.

Yelp
Great variety and super fresh. Staff friendly and educated on product. Loved that you could mix and match. Very tasty

Edward H.

Yelp
My go to place whenever I'm in the area visiting family. The moment you enter, it's clearly a seafood place, the aromas... great service, super seafood.

Pat H.

Yelp
First time. we had a dozen oysters, yum. my husband had scallop chowder, he loved it and shrimp roll. I had lobster roll. Meat so fresh, had it toasted with butter. It's not fancy, you can pick up seafood to bring home. We went at 4:30 on a Tuesday. They had high tables and regular tables By the time we left it was busy. Delicious food. we will be back

MomA A.

Yelp
Excellent fresh seafood. Wonderful service. Small and busy but delightful. Best lobster rolls I've had in Maine and I was born here.

Jenny N.

Yelp
We dropped by to pick up a tray of uni. Bring your own rice and seaweed so you can make hand rolls! Best bang for your bucks!

Kathryn C.

Yelp
Really good! The seafood was so fresh and the service was fast and friendly. It is a great casual place to go for some high quality seafood. Fairly small but i had no problem- got in and out 30 min before close.

Katie W.

Yelp
Food was fresh, but the service was poor. It wasn't busy but had to flag down the server to place our order and then to ask to bring our drinks after our food was served.

Charlie V.

Yelp
The service was outstanding, the staff was knowledgeable, extremely friendly, and definitely went out of the way and made the meal. The restaurant was exceptionally clean and well maintained. It was very nice inside. The seafood was exceptionally fresh, not a hint of fishy scent from any of the shellfish. We came there to try the Uni from the market and they were so nice they let us crack it open at their tables and even gave us forks and a plate of ice. Some of the best Uni I had with salt brine. We ended up trying a variety of oysters, clams, scallops, a crab cake and a couple of lobster rolls. Everything tasted great. The hot lobster roll was delicious and price point was great. We will definitely come back to get our seafood fix here when we visit Portland again.

Lauren M.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch today, which was delicious! We had the crab dip, half dozen oysters and the smoked trout roll. The smoked trout roll was the star of our lunch, but I'd recommend everything. The team was very kind and we'll definitely come back soon.

Sandra J.

Yelp
Food was excellent the live scallops were delicious and you have to get the scallop role Out of this world!

Alison V.

Yelp
Wanted some fresh seafood and this place delivered! We got the raw sampler and the fresh catch (tuna). I had the bowl and my boyfriend got the sandwich. All come recommended! Everyone was friendly and knowledgeable.

Darlene G.

Yelp
Cozy little place with delicious food. My husband had the grilled swordfish sandwich and found it tasty. I had a lobster roll warm and buttery. Little cucumbers on the side had good spices on them. Our friend had the seven spoon oysters and the special whitefish chowder. He enjoyed it all. Great place to have a lunch while visiting Portland!

Gabrielle D.

Yelp
Had a wonderful time at Sopo Seafood Market. There was a lot of on street parking and tables to choose from when we arrived. We visited during Maine Lobster Week so we were happy to try all things lobster and support Maine Lobsterman. I had the margarita and my husband had a spicy bourbon drink. Both were shaken and served up in chilled martini glasses. Both drinks were very delicious and fresh. For food we got the lobster bisque that had a curry vibe, lobster lettuce wrap, crab melt, the lobster rice bowl and a dozen oysters. Everything was outstanding. My husband really wants to try the poke bowl now that he had the lobster rice bowl. The eel sauce and everything was next level good. The service was also fantastic. We had great conversation with 3 employees/the owner and were treated really well. Great place and I can't wait to return for fresh tuna to go!

Lena L.

Yelp
Great seafood selection. We came just for the raw bar and it did not disappoint. Each oyster was 2.5 which is very reasonable!

Vi L.

Yelp
THE LOBSTER ROLL: I had a recommendation to come here for the lobster roll warmed with butter. It's all I ate, and it did not disappoint. It was perfect. Good amount of lobster meat, well cooked, very tasty and buttery. Fluffy hot dog bun grilled in delicious butter, slightly crispy on the outside. A single piece of lettuce that did not detract from said lobster or bread, but added some freshness and texture. Chopped chives as a garnish that enhanced the bites. I would absolutely get this again, but not too often bc of the $23 price tag (in the end it was $26.10 with tax included). I didn't get to try any of their other offerings, but based on this roll, I imagine they would be delightful. Unrelated to the roll... the bathroom has a cool, modern design. The restaurant space is also open and cozy. And there are both fresh and canned seafood offerings for purchase. I'm glad to have tried this place.

Lim K.

Yelp
While staying in downtown Portland, we took a bus to get here and it was worth the trip. We enjoyed fresh oysters and clams. The clams were much better than the ones we had in downtown area. Also tried a cup of cod and bacon chowder. It was very light and tasty.

Sara E.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing seafood! We stopped by for a late lunch and tried a range of items, including a few "spoons" (amuse-bouche). The oyster special with caviar was incredible, as well as the crab & uni and the scallop ceviche. The local oysters themselves were very fresh and briny. The smoked trout roll and the crab melt were very delicious and filling. The crab is particular was so sweet. Excellent service, unassuming location and space, with truly extravagant seafood options! We will be back again and again!

Barry A.

Yelp
Really really good. The food is good, the service is friendly, the place is clean. I'd give it 4.5 stars if that were an option. I had a broiled halibut sandwich; my wife had a rice bowl. Both were very tasty.

Bill M.

Yelp
Fantastic local seafood market, plus delivery and now wonderful raw bar serving beautiful oysters and small bites! Wow , I love everything about this spot, service, style and above all, the beautiful seafood they source. Whether you are looking for seafood delivered,a new spot to eat, or shop these should be on your list!!

Sandra L.

Yelp
Very fresh seafood at reasonable pricing. Tuesdays they have an oyster happy hour pricing and they had a nice variety to select from, all were delicious.

Alex G.

Yelp
Super clean and minimalistic seafood market and raw bar. We've known the owner for years from his amazing oyster cart, and we know his level of seafood and shellfish knowledge is second to none. The menu is posted - which includes small bites - but the highlight is certainly the fresh, local oysters. They are changing constantly, but when we arrived they had six varieties. Every oyster we had was shucked perfectly and went down smoothly - yum! The three caviar spoon tasting is small but perfect for trying varying species. Other incredible dishes we had were the halibut chowder and the monkfish stew. The stew, served in a mushroom and tomato broth over rice, was incredibly creative and well made. Absolutely delicious. Don't forget to drink the local seaweed cider - available in a cool looking can. As a very small suggestion, I would recommend that they welcome customers upon arrival (no one said hello or even asked if we needed help or to sit) and tables sat dirty and full of dishes for what felt like eternity (we had to ask several times if perhaps someone was going to clear the tables). I know they are new, but a bit more customer attention would be a huge help. Regardless, this is going to be one of the prime stops on any shellfish lover's Maine oyster tour. Five solid stars for this fun, cute, hip raw bar and marketplace.

Marushka G.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this place. The raw oysters were as good as it gets; we had the green back and you can get caviar on one or all of them and it was a very delicious caviar. The haddock chowder was perfectly light with just the right amount of fish and veggies with great seasoning. My friend had the smoked fish sampler and that was amazing while the raw scallop; to die for. Our server at the bar was a sweetheart and the preparer of the oysters who was right there was delightful. If it wasn't so far from Ogunquit id take my friend from out of town this coming weekend. I just love little hole in the walls that have amazingly fresh seafood. Right off the boat and service with a smile.

Bill M.

Yelp
Great lunch. Oysters, sandwiches and soup. Oysters were fresh and beautiful! Only possible complaint was that the cocktail sauce was a bit bland, and I wish I had more for two dozen oysters. Still, great service and a wonderful meal.

Patricia S.

Yelp
Food!! Amazing! Service-EXCELLENT!!! Ambiance-PERFECT! There are places to go in S Portland but why not go to the best!! Alex is charming and the best shucker ever! Luke made an amazing martini. You must go!!!

Doug J.

Yelp
Amazing food and service was excellent! Oysters are off the chart, we had three dozen.

Nicole Z.

Yelp
Great small market and dinning establishment that is off the beaten path. They have a great selection of fish dips, soups, oysters and salads. They're Oyster selection was great! I also ordered a lobster roll which was great but was missing some more flavor or maybe butter but all in all it was Great! Friend ordered a blood Mary that she said was tasty as well!

Sue P.

Yelp
Love this place, my go to for stocking up on oysters and all things seafood. Haven't eaten off the menu yet but surely will soon! Had a nice talk with Rigo who taught us a lot about the local oyster-farms and seasonality of fish. 10/10

Kellen M.

Yelp
Great food and fantastic service. The person who served me continued to impress me with how passionate he was about making sure everyone got the best experience they could! Best lobster roll I've had (out of 3 - but hey, it was pretty darn good!). Vibes were good and was a great pitstop for lunch.

Hugh S.

Yelp
Had a great time drinking craft ME beer and slurping on local shellfish at this gem of a spot! Excellent service from the entire team in their treatment towards my party and all of the patrons who stopped in during our visit. Fair prices, prompt ordering and they had excellent knowledge of the oysters in their cooler. Can't miss this place if you're a local or tourist! Beautiful park across the street to walk off your meal afterwards. Big shout out to Jed for treating us so nicely - 10 out of 10!!

David C.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in to SoPo on a road trip across Maine. Wow! Extremely friendly staff. Clean restaurant. Very fresh seafood with Maine sushi grade bluefin tuna. Prices were very reasonable. I had the Portuguese soup of the day, 6 oysters (Aphrodite was my favorite oyster) and the seaweed salad. Wife had lobster wrap. All were excellent. Place is an active seafood market with bulk seafood for purchase, crab Patties, canned seafood and sauces from local vendors.

John B.

Yelp
This pace is great. Such a strong selection of local oysters, fresh fish and smoked fish. A really special find

S. L.

Yelp
Terrific!!!! I had the house salad with smoked trout and have been back three other times for the same dish. Wonderful spot with very attentive and friendly staff!!!

Carolyn R.

Yelp
Right before leaving Maine we decided to try one more restaurant. So glad that we did. This was our first time here and we absolutely loved it. We enjoyed fresh delicious oysters. Our fave were the Eros and Butterfield... The shrimp cocktail was also delicious. Allison took care of us and she was so friendly and kind. Informative. We took a lobster roll to go and I'm sure it will be amazing We will definitely return on our next trip to Maine

Gary B.

Yelp
An excellent dining experience, exceptionally fresh seafood. Had the grilled crab & cheese sandwich plate and a beer for lunch, and it was outstanding. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive, my server was Alex. Plenty of seating if you were eating in and parking was was readily available. The seafood to go looked fantastic, the staff cut me two 1-1/2" swordfish steaks. They had 6 varieties of oysters on hand, so I bought a few doz to go. I give them a serious recommendation, and I will definitely go back.

Dana S.

Yelp
Stopped in here on the 4th of July for lunch. The server let us know right away that we may not be able to get oysters due to a last minute staffing issue but offered us a free round of drinks for our wait. We decided to stay and are SO glad we did. The shrimp rolls and the crab melt were delicious. We were able to order oysters after all and they were out of this world! The delicious food and drinks paired with the top notch service turned a rainy holiday into wonderful and memorable afternoon. We will be sure to visit here every time we are in Portland!
