Best downtown Detroit restaurants for the North American International Auto Show | Eater Detroit

"This modern Japanese American restaurant on the ground level of the Federal Reserve Building comes from the vision of Harold Kim, the owner behind the short-lived Korean American restaurant in Corktown called Black Ginger. Visitors can expect starters like tempura broccolini or takoyaki — octopus with pickled ginger, scallion, and dashi broth; an offering of noodles like udon with thinly sliced ribeye; deep-fried entrees like citrus-brined pork katsu with yuzu wasabi aioli; and a variety of sushi rolls. To drink, find cocktails made with Japanese spirits, such as the Tokidoki with Suntory Toki Whisky, walnut, lemon, banana, and brown sugar, in addition to a brief menu of nonalcoholic mocktails. Reservations can be made on Resy." - Serena Maria Daniels

The Best New Restaurants in Detroit, March 2025

"A modern Japanese American destination called Soraya opened its doors in the Federal Reserve Building downtown that used to house Maru Sushi. Harold Kim, owner of the short-lived Korean American spot Black Ginger in Corktown, helms the restaurant. Expect starters like tempura broccolini or takoyaki — octopus with pickled ginger, scallion, and dashi broth; an offering of noodles like udon with thinly sliced rib-eye; entrees like citrus-brined pork katsu with yuzu wasabi aioli; and a variety of sushi rolls. To drink, find cocktails made with Japanese spirits, such as the Tokidoki with Suntory Toki Whisky, walnut, lemon, banana, and brown sugar, in addition to a brief menu of nonalcoholic mocktails. Best Places for Sushi in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

Soraya is a solid spot for sushi in downtown Detroit. The space feels modern and upscale without being too formal, and it’s a great place to grab drinks after work or catch up with friends. The sushi is fresh and well put together—nothing too wild, but definitely high quality. One of the best parts is the cocktail menu. The drinks are creative and really well made, not your average bar stuff. I had one with Japanese tea flavors that was especially good. They also have a happy hour during the week with cocktails and deals on sushi rolls, which makes it a great value for what you’re getting. Overall, Soraya delivers—good food, strong drinks, and a cool atmosphere right in the heart of the city. I’ll definitely be back, especially for happy hour.

Our drinks were 75% ice. For the price they’re charging for drinks i expect to get more than a sip or two. Sushi was pretty mid. Our waiter was great though so i guess there’s that.

A friend recommend this place to my wife and I and we really enjoyed ourselves. The service was outstanding the were very friendly and got us everything in a timely manner. The ambiance was very modern they did have something to block booths but it makes it difficult to see the entire restaurant and hides some of the sushi rolling etc. The food was amazing! Highly recommend the Popcorn Lobster roll and the seabass they were outstanding! The fried chicken. My wife got was a bit under cooked, if you get this dish I suggest getting it well done. The drinks were so fresh and poured perfectly and creative. Highly recommend this spot to anyone!

I haven’t had a dining experience like this in awhile. The starters were all delicious and arrived super fast. The octopus skewers were cooked perfectly, and the broccolini tempura was very good. The lobster croquette was also delicious and creamy. I celebrated my birthday and I was accommodated really well which was nice. Everyone in my party enjoyed it. Also the “small plates” were larger than I expected.

Google
Overall, quite a disappointing experience. Both the sushi and sashimi were just average — while fresh, the salmon and other cuts were clearly not premium grade, more like standard supermarket quality. The rolls were basic and lacked any memorable flavor. For the high prices, I expected much better quality and execution. Fried items were also nothing special. Service was polite and attentive, which I appreciated, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to make up for the underwhelming food. Not worth the price — I won’t be returning.

The food was decent, bulgogi fries and the flaming roll were the highlights. Sushi was just average. Drinks were mostly ice, mine was barely a few sips. Overall, an okay experience.

We dined at Soraya for my friend's birthday and sat at the bar and had a great time. We ordered a variety of sushi rolls, saki, salad, Sapporo, and wine. The bartenders took awesome care of us and all the food was super tasty. The cheesecake stole the show at the end. This is the old Maru sushi and has a similar vibe. Free validated parking at the financial district garage!

I’ll preface this by saying we came on a Tuesday evening. The food was mostly very good. We got several sushi dishes and each were very good. The issue we ran into was them being out of several ingredients for items we wanted, especially bc we had 2 vegetarian friends who love sweet potato roll but they did not have it. There were limit vegetarian options for them. The vegetable roll they have on the menu is not filling and kind of a salad in a roll. They also did not have the Pork Katsu and a drink item I cannot remember. Staff was pretty nice but they have to up their staffing. Half the restaurant was open but we had a 20 min wait due to decrease staff. Our hostess was even helping them out. It’s a good location to downtown.

Yelp
I'm new to Detroit and can confidently say that Soraya is my go-to sushi place. I dined in here with a group of co-workers and we all had a smattering of cocktails/wine/mocktails. I had my usual glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and it was light and crisp, just as expected. For apps to share, we got edamame, shishito peppers, and gyoza. The edamame had more of a kick to them than the shishito peppers which was an interesting take. For dinner, I had the miso soup, which was not listed on the menu at that time but I had stalked the menu online prior to going and saw it on there -- fortunately, they were able to accommodate my request, highly recommend, and the spicy tuna roll. I've had many spicy tuna rolls and would say Soraya's is very good especially when paired with wasabi+soy. I have since picked up sushi here and the to-go process was a breeze. Other perks about this place -- coat check, upscale ambience good for all sorts of dinners (business/date/girls night), and appropriately priced.

Yelp
Yum-o!! I really enjoyed my food here over the weekend. We had the following (see menu attachment for the prices and descriptions): Edamame: Had a wonderful citrus bent to it with a kick of spice. Ponzu Sweet Potato: I really enjoyed this and found it nicely filling. I'd love to have this again. Okonomiyaki (savory octopus pancake): This was my favorite of the flavors, and I will be having this again. Definitely a "craveable" item!! Yellowtail and Tuna Sashimi appetizers: These dishes had generous bites of delicious tasting fish. I was quite satisfied with our choices here. We also got a bottle of "Les Allies Blanc de Blanc" it was $35, and I found it a very worthwhile purchase. We were lucky to have the round booth that used to be part of the bank vault while we were there. I really enjoyed the privacy despite it being a bit drafty. I would most definitely return--our service was great, and it was nice that they did a fantastic job of clearing the empty plates. I'll be back!! Thank you!!

Yelp
Tried the newly opened Soraya last night! We made reservations for a Thursday evening but there were lots of available tables. The interior is still pretty similar to the former Maru and the space is beautiful. We started off with the gyozas which we enjoyed. We then decided to split the flaming ahi roll, branzino karaage, and niku udon. The sushi came out first with beautiful presentation and tasted so good! We really loved this one. Next was the branzino which I thought was just okay. The udon came a while later and tasted very good, but by the time it arrived I was already quite full. I probably would have enjoyed more of this if it came out with the branzino. For dessert, we enjoyed the amazing matcha tiramisu! This was not too sweet and very well flavored, and we were told made by a very talented in house pastry chef. Probably my favorite part of the evening was our lovely server, Juju! She was so kind and friendly and we loved chatting with her, and really enjoyed her recommendations! I hope to see her again next time!

Yelp
A few glitches on the grand opening but overall a fabulous experience. Delicious cocktails and food. Only drawback is the bathrooms for accessibility. While large enough the toilets are so low to the ground I feel it would near impossible to transfer from a wheelchair. Accessible access to restaurant is great. Hope they work out the timing kinks for the next prix fix experience.

Yelp
Solid spot overall. The service was great and our server knew the menu very well to recommend things. My favorites were the chicken katsu sandwich, the tempura broccolini, and the sashimi assortment. The ambiance could be spruced up a little with more decor and music.

Yelp
Soraya was a great experience. The staff were friendly and the ambiance was relaxing. Our waiter answered all our questions and tentative. The spider roll and salmon on the beach roll were delicious and worth the price. At first I thought the rolls were a bit pricey, but they were decent sized and delicious. The crab korokke appetizer was really good too! The right amount of creamy and crunchiness. I really hope to revisit for their lunch menu because they have a lot of different options that looked good too.

Yelp
I went here on a double date with some friends who had a chance to try out Black Ginger before the move, so we were excited to give Soraya a try. It's in the location where Maru Sushi used to be (heart of downtown so leave a little time to find parking). We ordered a lot of dishes, the standouts were definitely the Okonomiyaki and the niku udon. I loved the flavor of the udon and the noodles were perfect. The sashimi was good, but I think I just like specialty sushi rolls in general and the branzino karaage was decent, but not my favorite. Our server, Sean, was an absolute gem and his service was exceptional. He checked on us often and was very attentive. We ended up ordering a dessert that was sold out, but he went the extra mile by getting us the matcha tiramisu on the house to make up for the dessert being sold out. Definitely made our dinner experience better so shoutout to Sean!

Yelp
Loved the matcha tiramisu and the chicken katsu the most. Drinks were tremendous across the board. Lobster croquette was a nice addition too. Okinamoyaki was a bit octopus forward for my personal preferance,, and similarly the udon was a bit heavy on the onions, but overall very pleased with our time and experience. Staff were the best part. They even hand wrote us a card for our anniversary!!

Yelp
Yall this place is the real deal. Easily my new favorite spot downtown! I truly cannot recommend it enough.

Yelp
Wonderful hidden gem in the Federal Reserve Building. Parking was simple/validated. Everyone was so friendly - bar manager was extremely knowledgeable and was able to choose/craft drinks to your liking. The food was delicious, very generous portioning. The whole restaurant was relatively quiet, with comfortably dimmed lighting. Extremely impressed and satisfied - cannot wait to visit again.

Yelp
Waiter was frazzled. Appetizers came before drinks. Never refilled our water or asked if we wanted another cocktail. Both entrees we requested were unavailable. Out of udon noodles (three dishes have udon noodles). Told we had an old menu when tried to order branzino. Gyuza was good as was tempura broccoli. Pork was fatty. Sushi roll was ok-very rich. Wish they had kept the crispy rice from Black Ginger. And seriously need to work out their menu offerings and wait staff.

Yelp
Went here for dinner and was very pleased with everything. Our server Juju was very friendly and attentive. Food and drinks were both great and thought the price was reasonable for everything we ordered. Looking forward to going back again.

Yelp
Ate dinner on Valentine's Day at soraya. About $90 pp, pre paid for a pre fixe menu that everyone else got as well. The food was good (but not great). The service was a DISASTER. It was Super slow, on multiple occasions, we were presented with food items out of order that the servers then took away. At one point When asked what we were waiting on, we stated we were waiting on the second course and after a long delay, we were served the third course...when we said we hadn't gotten the second course we waited even longer and then had to make additional requests to get the second course. We were 2 hrs into a 5 course meal and still hadn't received the 3rd/4th/5th courses. multiple tables near us were obviously having similar issues. Management clearly bit off more than they could chew. There was zero coordination between the kitchen and the servers. The servers were trying hard but they were in over their heads. Would probably not go back until they have some time to refine their service.

Yelp
The food and drinks were good. We had Wayne helping us with menu suggestions, which were great! Overall, a good experience and we'll be back.

Yelp
Ordered the Nagasaki Champon and the King Salmon Roll. I'm part Japanese and have been to Japan 20 times and have been to most Japanese restaurants in metro Detroit Reason for 2 star review: 1. The Nagasaki Champon is very very American style. The broth is 50% heavy cream, and although it's supposed to be a little bit rich, the broth is about 5x fattier and thicker than it's supposed to be. The heavy cream was about 70% of the flavor. This is one of my favorite dishes in Japan, and I only ate about 10% of it, it was so bad. 2. The Sushi grade itself was fine, but it was not cut very well. The sushi chefs here are not very skilled. 3. The price point is rather high, but the food is low quality. I would have given this place 3 stars instead of 2, if it was 2/3rd of the price.

Michael E.

Yelp
Very good food and ambiance! Service is very good and food is amazing! Looking to visit here soon again!
