"Situated in a strip mall crowded with restaurants and Asian grocery giant Kam Man supermarket, South Garden has carved out a seafood niche for itself in Quincy. It serves classic Cantonese seafood fare — think thoroughly prepared fish and shellfish dishes with just-right seasoning and deep-fried battered squid coated in savory egg yolk sauce. The space may seem small but a good time is guaranteed. Locals are familiar with this place because birthdays and wedding celebrations often take place here; seafood aficionados frequent this spot because its quality has remained top-notch throughout the years." - Nathan Tavares, Valerie Li Stack, Eater Staff

South Garden is a great spot for Chinese food! The garlic chicken was super tasty, and the lobster tower was incredible – so fresh and full of flavor. A little but way too crowded but they have plenty of parking. The staff was really nice, and the food came out fast. If you’re craving good Chinese food, definitely check out South Garden!

Google
We enjoyed South Garden a lot! It’s right next to a huge Chinese supermarket, so even though there was a queue (20 mins) when we arrived, we could walk around till a table was open. The lobster tower was really good — quality of the seafood itself is great, and the preparation was also well done. The asparagus and beef stir fry was also very good.

Google
One of the best Cantonese seafood outside China town. Soft shell crab is amazing, the ribs are good too. Everything here is top of the line

Have been enjoying this place since they opened. Great hole in the wall type establishment tucked away in the corner of President Plaza between Kam Man Foods Market and Pho Countryside. Ample parking. Cantonese style Chinese food. Service is good. Food is excellent. Served hot and fresh. We went tonight, the day of Chinese New Year at 5:30 PM and the line was out the door. Good thing we made reservations ahead of time for a party of 20. Sat down right away and ordered an 8 course dinner including fish maw soup, Peking ribs, walnut shrimp, hainanese chicken, short ribs with eggplant, watercress, ginger scallion twin lobsters and jellyfish. All were absolutely delicious, excellent and prepared perfectly. Highly recommend. Will definitely return soon and try their specialty lobster as well as the other items on their menu.

I love this place, the food is great here. I highly recommend it.

Google
The clams in black bean sauce is soooo good here! Cant go wrong with their garlic crispy chicken either! There lobsters are huge and they do lobster towers.

Google
Great place that has its ups and downs. Pros food is usually very consistent in terms of quality and taste. I emphasize usually because there have been times where the flavor was not there at all. Cons seating is very cramped and as I mentioned, the rare inconsistencies that occur. Service is passable. When it’s a full house make sure to keep note of what was ordered, they will usually forget. All in all, fantastic food. Passable service. Plate portions have gotten significantly smaller.

South Garden is a 5 Star authentic Chinese restaurant located in Quincy, MA. Their food was incredible and was accompanied by a friendly and humorous waiter. If you're looking for a great meal, easy parking, and uninterested in heading into Boston, then this is the perfect place. South Garden maintains a highly busy dine-in and takeout service. Over a weekend trip back home to Boston I tried South Garden for the first time, and ended up dinning in one night and getting takeout on my way to the airport at the end of the trip. Their half chicken coated in crispy garlic was tender, juicy, and paired perfectly with some white rice. In addition, we got the Pineapple Shrimp in Taro Pot which was an amazing spin on a mayo shrimp dish. The shrimp were large and the crispy and the soft taro pot was delicious. Another great dish we had was their ginger scallion lobster. The serving size was generous, and the plate was full of hunks of shelled lobster tails and claws. The standout dish that had all of us beyond excited was the live scallop with vermicelli and garlic. The scallops were cooked in half of their shell and covered in vermicelli and garlic sauce. This dish was absolutely incredible and I'd come back to South Garden again and again just to have this dish. I can't wait for my next trip back home to Boston to head back to South Garden for another great meal!

Yelp
We came here specifically for the lobster tower as we wanted to try it. It was very tasty with lettuce and french fries. It was pricy, but great experience. The restaurant was fully packed and every table was taken. This was around 7pm on a Friday night. $98 for the lobster tower dish. Three of us ate it and completely finished the entire tower.

Yelp
The food was either a hit or a miss. I've never seen a chow fun so poorly made, which was clearly lacking the grease and flavor that makes it distinctively Cantonese chow fun. Because of that, a lot of the noodles and beef were burnt and when we brought it up, we were told that he guessed the chef made it like that today and walked away with no suggestion to change it or remake it. The soy sauce chicken was great, though...super juicy! This place was really lacking in the service department, though. My grandmother literally asked a reasonable question of whether the entrees came with white rice or not so that we could order some if they didn't. The waiter scoffed and said "of course we have white rice... what kind of Chinese restaurant has no white rice?" We probably had like 4 different waiters that stopped by our table and the others were okay or much better but that particular waiter having a snarky and condescending response really annoyed tf out of me. Even asking for the check was such a chore. Usually you go into these type of Cantonese restaurants expecting meh service, but that was completely uncalled for and the food wasn't even all that to justify this place at all.

Yelp
New menus. Food was spot on as usual. Biggest lobsters in the tank I've ever seen in my life.

Helen Z.

Yelp
This place is right next to Kam Man supermarket and was packed when we went for dinner. Some dishes were kind of greasy. I loved the appetizer with the huge clams, don't remember what it was called but would come back just to order that. The shrimp was also very fresh. Would come back to try more things but definitely order the clams.

Yelp
It's been a crazy few days. Celebratory dinner at South Garden Quincy, food was fast and plenty! My little guy recieved a special award for his non profit efforts and dropping off 4000 pounds of food to our local pantry this weekend. We had the seafood tower (Asian style) it was a 9 pound lobster, crabs, and fries??????, fried tofu, beef and Chinese broccoli, beef and cilantro soup, seafood soup, chicken with fried garlic, egg tofu, Buddhist delight, sweet and sour beef, Mayo shrimp in taro pot, triple fried delight (pork, shrimp, calamari). Everything was really good! I especially loved the little sweet warm dessert at the end. Highly recommended!

Yelp
It's been a few years since we last visited South Garden and I was really looking forward to it - and I wasn't disappointed! Delicious, well-prepared, and such a variety of different dishes to choose from. (Btw, if you're wanting standard Chinese-American fare here, just don't. Explore and awaken your taste buds!) We shared: salt & pepper squid (one of the best we've had - and had some real heat for a change); steamed scallops and tofu in black bean sauce (funky and mild at the same time; sounds weird but it works); mixed vegetables with lotus root and bulbs (very very good); and yellow chives with fish in xo sauce (amazingly delicious, the yellow garlic chives are mild and sweet, the fish filet pieces were skate wing I think, also very good). Outstanding meal. Service is polite and prompt. We'll be back - and I wish we lived closer to Quincy so we could go every week!

Judie K.

Yelp
Definitely a must visit for the lobster tower! We got a small which can feed 4 comfortably, 5 people maybe. It's market priced, so when we went, it was $98. Really a nice experience to eat various parts of the lobster and it's quite meaty! The flavor was AMAZING. Hard to describe, but a bit of a spice, salt and peppery, garlic-ky, and more. They deep fry it so it seems too. Also came for the dou Miao (pea pod stem) in crab sauce, and it's one of my go-to dishes. :) Will be coming back again!

Libby L.

Yelp
Always good authentic Chinese. Gone to other places in Quincy - can't compare to South Garden. The best soy sauce chicken around.

Kelly Z.

Yelp
I came here for one thing and one thing only. THE LOBSTER TOWER!!! The lobster tower is fried twin lobsters with fresh house made fries and veggies. It was a beauty to see! The lobster was full of meat and the claws and tails were just HUMONGEOUS. Literally the fattest lobster I've ever seen! Very flavorful and I liked that its fried so it absorbs the sauce in the crust and on the shell you can suck off the flavors. The chicken was also good too, chicken is something I must have at chinese resteraunts. The skin was nice thin and crispy and the chicken itself is juicy and silky. UGH so good!! Overall, you have to come here for the lobster tower. This place is known for it and I never seen anywhere else have this!

Tony T.

Yelp
I often come here with my partner's family and it always hits the spot! You can't really go wrong with any item, but my favorite dish is the Salt and Pepper Eel which goes well with some hot steamed rice or noodles and veggies. Occasionally, we order a fancier dish like the Lobster Tower or King Crab which are not only super delicious, but also picture-worthy.

Philip K.

Yelp
I've been here dozens of times over the years and I think it's declining now. This past year, the food has become more bland, shrunk, and gotten more expensive. The service has gotten a lot worse. You can be ignored if you're not proactive. I've been seated without a menu more than once lately. Most recently, my order was taken but didn't make its way to the kitchen. When we followed up, it was clear that the waiter screwed up. Then they didn't bring out an entree, and when the bill came, it was again apparent that they left it out. The waiter who brought the bill said maybe they were out, but the waiter who took our order never mentioned this. At its peak, I'd give it a 4 for reliable, consistent, good Cantonese food but a little lacking in service and environment. I'm going to give South Garden a 2 as a composite historical score, though some individual visits were definitely a 1. I'd still come alone for quick lunch if I knew exactly what I wanted and could order as I sat down though. Their rice and noodle plates are good for that. For anything else, try the places on Hancock or Brook Streets, like New Winsor or Big Fun.

Yelp
Our extended family meets up once, maybe twice per year, and its always at South Garden in Quincy. The location is in the same plaza as the Kam Man supermarket on Quincy Ave. There is ample parking in this shopping plaza, but during busy times you may have to circle the lot a couple of times to get a spot. The restaurant itself is typical for asian restaurants. Tables and chairs are tightly packed in to fit as many people as possible. Lighting is adequate for family affairs. There are some monitors on the walls that shows some interesting content (they were showing Sonny the food critic one one side, and some sports on the other). They have fresh seafood in their water tanks. There's always a bunch of families outside waiting for a table. As you dine here, you are likely to hear a table singing happy birthday, which further supports this place as a family friendly restaurant. Food quality and taste is excellent! Probably the best you can get in the Quincy area. There is a great variety of seafoods, meats, veg plates etc. Food comes out hot and fresh and never bland. The staff are friendly in our limited interactions. They are good about bringing out risers for some of your dishes so that they can fit more of your food on the lazy susan. This place has something for everyone. You should try this place at least once. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

Yelp
The food is so good. Its too much oil and in my opinion , the restaurant taste is suits too me. The best china food to me

Sharon C.

Yelp
This is my family's preferred place for Chinese family style dinner. Food is good and can be busy during weekends/dinner time. Food comes out fast! Plenty of parking as it's in a plaza. Must orders: lobster tower & steamed oysters in black bean sauce!!!

Sophia M.

Yelp
food was good. crab into 4 courses. fried rice and noodles were good. not super worth it. lobster tower was good and worth trying. would reorder. seafood birds nest. the smallest taro nest (mashed kind). i prefer the shredded deep fried kind. string beans were crunchy but not the wrinkly skin kind black bean clam. steamed black bean oysters. garlic pea pod stems. frog claypot. all good

Norm C.

Yelp
Good food, reasonable price. I got the stir fry clams in black bean sauce, twin lobster in egg yolk, empress chicken, fried rice and the seafood pot with vermicelli. Everything came out quick, hot and delicious. The place can get noisy because it's small. It's been around, so expect the decor to be dated. Service was on point and helpful. Can be a miss at times during peak hours.

Jess C.

Yelp
Great food - love the walnut shrimp (with taro), Hainan chicken, and many more. Seafood - clams, fish, lobster, etc. - is fresh and made to order. Low key dining environment. Friendly staff. Definitely recommended!

Yelp
In South Garden's walls, a secret's told Of bias and disdain, young and old Towards Caucasians, a scornful gaze A welcome not extended, in any way The shucking of pea pods, a chore with flair But to some customers, a gesture rare Disrespect and contempt, in every snap A message clear, "You're not welcome to clap" The aroma of stir-fries, a savory treat But for some, a scent that can't be beat The taste of prejudice, a flavor so sour Leaves a bad taste, that lingers for an hour In South Garden's kitchen, a tale unfolds Of discrimination, where hearts grow cold A place where food and hate entwine A restaurant's dark secret, forever divine.

Yelp
This place serves traditional Chinese dishes as well as the more Americanized Chinese dishes. So no matter what you prefer for Chinese food there is something for everyone here. I dined here for lunch on two recent occasions. The dining room was pretty full both times but I was seated right away and did not have to wait for a table even though the restaurant was busy. On my last trip there I went with the beef and broccoli plate which included plain white rice as a side dish. The food was very fresh and delicious tasting. The service was not the friendliest in the world however it was fast and efficient. The portion size I received was excellent for the price that I paid for my meal. I would definitely come back again for lunch or dinner.

Kiki W.

Yelp
Dirty doors with finger prints stains coming in, dirty glass windows , menus stained, flies, and a very bad odor permeated the space. The servers didn't care to make eye contact nor seat us, and once seated, we were ignored until they brought us dirty menus. What happened to this place? It's now a dump and I am concerned that if this is how dirty the place is with lack of care, how much do they care about health and safety with food prep!? Not coming back. We went to Pho Countryside next door and glad we did!

Elaineee G.

Yelp
Wow, truly so much has changed since the last time I've been here. I did not have one bad dish on this visit. After not eating at this place for years (due to a bad experience) I went back here and had the most wonderful meal! Atmosphere: I wanna say its like your typical Chinese restaurant, but its really not. It's clean and bright and the vibe just feels so happy. The decor hasn't changed in years and the staff are so much kinder than most Chinese restaurant (tbh). There's even a nice fish tank where you can choose your fish if you want to be THAT person. Attire: No specific attire, they dont judge, wear what you please. Food: When I say I didn't have one bad bite of food, not one bad dish..I mean it. From the first bite of crispy pork (I was nervous at first), but wow you can tell it was fresh oil and crisp to perfection. The food doesn't lack in taste either. My favorite dish, the beef chow foon, usually its an oily dish, thats just how it comes. But places always drench in oil, but wow the way they did not drench it with oil is impressive. The eggplant and beef rib hot pot is a must. They are so generous with their portions that no matter how many times you go back to get more food it seems like the food isn't disappearing. The flavor of each dish is so different and so good. Nothing was overly flavors, likewise, nothing was under seasoned. Every dish was unique and so delicious. I cannot say enough good things about it Location: This location is very easy to get to by car and public transportation. There is a bus stop not far walks from here. The closest train stop is a red line.. quite a walk but well worth it if necessary. This is right in the same plaza as Kam Man and so it is a bustling area on most days. Price: very reasonable pricing. For the amount of food your get per dish, I'd say it was a steal. I went with my family and friends (10) and we ordered 9 dishes with our bill totaling about $160. Obviously some dishes were more than others, but this price alone is amazing considering we ordered 5 of those geoduck vermicelli on a half shell thing. Parking: There is a huge parking lot, free. There is also a bike rack if you please. Overall: I been here twice in one week...needless to say its delicious and well worth both trips. In addition to such a great meal, they end our meal with a complimentary coconut sago dessert soup. I love this because traditionally this is how we end our meal, but a lot of restaurants have since shy away from this. The dessert soup was just as delicious as the meal itself. All in all will definitely come back some time soon.

Harry L.

Yelp
For those people who lives in the south shore area craving for real authentic chinese food but hate to be stuck in traffic driving into Boston, have I got a place for you. South Garden in Quincy, located inside the plaza with Kam Man supermarket serves the real authentic chinese food from fresh seafood to their famous soy sauce chicken. I been there many times and each time it gets more crowded so reservations is recommended. Everything is cooked to order with the freshest ingredients. They have a special lobster mountain entree that is very instagrammable.

Melinda N.

Yelp
Great Cantonese food. I tried new dishes that i did not know about if it weren't for my SIL who ordered in Cantonese. My favorite was the chicken and the fried rice. The noodles on the scallop were good but i would've been ok without the seafood. The snow peas are always good, and hopefully it's a decent market price. we were able to get a table reservation the day of for 10 people. Staff hustle about. We got everything that we needed. We brought a cake and they cleared the table, brought out plates, a knife and forks. I appreciate the service.

Tony L.

Yelp
Be careful when ordering from this place. I've ordered 2 rice plates that cost 11.99 each. I proceeded to pay and noticed he charged me way too much. I asked for a receipt and the guy became very upset + worried. He played around with the computer for a few minutes but I can see everything and that he manually changed the price. I asked for an explanation as to why the price he is charging me is different from the actual cost of the food. He just mumbled incoherently and made loud grunting noises, the whole time avoiding eye contact and refusing to give an answer There's a reason they try to avoid giving itemized receipts. These scammers want to use every opportunity to upcharge and rip you off.

Dong H.

Yelp
Actually we have come here more than once and it is a decent place for Cantonese food. You can find most of popular Cantonese dishes here. However, some are better than the others. The portion is really good but the service is so so. Our favor dishes are shrimp fried rice, short ribs with eggplant, oysters in black bean sauce, Hanan chicken, salt & pepper squid, pea pod stems, scallion & ginger lobsters, and steamed fish. Their porridges are good too.

Penelope L.

Yelp
Hands down this is my very favorite Asian restaurant. We drive an hour to get here, as we now live in Rhode Island, but nowhere in Rhode Island compares to South Garden.

Tulsa H.

Yelp
Great food. Decent service. Great Cantonese food in the area. You can't go wrong here.

Jack C.

Yelp
Wonton and brisket noodle soup is excellent, their seafood is very good too, we will go again.

Mimi C.

Yelp
I've been here a long time ago but stopped coming for the last 6 years. This year I started to come back because of how addictive their food is. They must have a new chef because they are much more innovative with their dishes and it tastes magnificent. I have to say, hands down, this is Massachusetts best Cantonese restaurant. Yes, in the whole Commonwealth! Rarely do I feel like I must go back to a Chinese restaurant soon. I came here 3 times a week at one point. Just incredible, go try it out for yourself. It won't disappoint. The waiters are funny, attentive, and very helpful with recommendations.

Judy W.

Yelp
This Cantonese food made me so happy! The lobster tower was good, but the fries were a bit cold. It was an interesting combo, but definitely delicious and the seasoning was garlic-y, addicting, and crispy. I really enjoyed the snow pea leaves, they were soft, but nothing mind-blowing. The yang zhou fried rice was above average. When we went in the afternoon on a weekday, it wasn't too busy. The servers were nice and hospitable and were able to speak Cantonese to them. Overall, I would come here for a casual, delicious meal. I would definitely come again if I was craving Cantonese food.

Steven W.

Yelp
Always enjoy coming to South Garden. There is never a long wait time and food comes quick in large portions. I always satisfy my Cantonese style cooking cravings with South Garden. It has the authentic taste of the traditional Chinese dishes without going into Chinatown. A good size restaurant and people are kind.

Rich L.

Yelp
Life is Short F ....it up. Family,Flavor, Friends Where to begin we had the dinner for six package. Started out if fish maw soup. Then had Chicken w ginger scallion sauce. Next which was my fav salt and pepper pork chops, let pause here .. this was one of those dishes where after a bite you just have to stop and say wow so good. Fish and tofu in a savory sauce. One unique dish was fried taro nest w shrimp and cashew. Added beef chow mein and the spicy clams and spinach w garlic and Chinese broccoli . This was probably one of best meal I've had in a while

Rob C.

Yelp
Very disappointed sat there for 45 minutes. No one came over to us... No business... Very rude waiters completely ignored us, avoiding us never again.

Justin X.

Yelp
We came here with our dog in a doggy backpack she was not moving or making a noise and we were told to leave her in the hot car or leave after we got out first dish this has never been a problem any where else. Also we asked for a ice water it never came do not recommen.

Maggie Z.

Yelp
They have a huge menu selection and can get quite busy during dinner time. Many families come here to eat and it's always so lively. Definitely do not go during Hollidays because I went during Father's Day and had a reservation too. I still waiting at least 1 hour and a half to get our soup. The food slowly came out and everytime something came out we already finished the dish that was on the table already. I've been going here for a couple years now and the food is pretty good. I really enjoy their crispy garlic chicken and their duck tongue. However be careful what you order because somethings can be quite expensive. The walnut shrimp is good but get it with their broccoli. Their water spinach was not that good and I think they overcooked. It was very soggy.

Kevino C.

Yelp
Bird Nest was superb! Lobster tower was awesome! Great experience! Thank you! We enjoyed our dinner!

Tom Y.

Yelp
we came all the way over here for a lobster tower. it sure didnt disappoint us. they had three sizes, small was $88. there was two of us, so a small which was twin lobster was enough. the two of us couldnt finish the whole tower. they made the tower just right, not too salty or fried. the pork chop was good too, they gave us a huge portion and surprisingly it wasnt too sweet. the dinner definitely did not disappoint. it was definitely authentic asian food.

Susan W.

Yelp
Food is authentic Cantonese. Good service and reasonable prices. Glad we discovered this place. Only come if you appreciate real Cantonese food, not the Chinese- American version.

Christine H.

Yelp
In the past we've come for friends dinners and birthday celebrations. The service and food had always been great. Our fave go to dishes are usually the garlic fried chicken, taro seafood nest, salt and spicy beef ribs, fresh clams with garlic vermicelli and honey walnut shrimp. The reason for the 3 stars is because the last time I went my mother placed a takeout order and specifically asked and confirmed the price. She was told twice 99 card, 92 cash. When I went to pick up the order the owner took advantage and said no the cash price is 99! I told him my mom confirmed the price and he refused. Then after he gave me the change he told me in canto that he's not afraid to get paid. Feel like he took advantage of an ABC.

Yelp
Very good eats. Service gud. Very nice place. Ambiance was good. Uhhh the garlic chicken is good and I like the grilled pepper steak. 5/5

Susanne C.

Yelp
Food was ok but with such a lengthy menu one would have expected flavor. Service was slow and inattentive. Bathrooms were disgusting.

D L.

Yelp
Food was really good and authentic. Went for lunch and dinner and everything was really well seasoned and fresh. Try their roasted chicken with fried garlic. It takes a long time to cook so plan ahead. Staff is not friendly but willing to sacrifice for authentic Chinese food.

John D.

Yelp
In full disclosure I love the various cuisines of China. As a rule living in New England makes great Chinese food rare. This place is the real deal and me of places in NY, SF, Beijing etc. not fancy but great Chinese food. The place is spartan but the food is sublime

K C.

Yelp
Scammers and liars. Poor quality food and service with an attitude. Bad management. We ordered a couple of dishes and they asked us if we're okay with a substitution. They ran out of something. Didn't say anything about price difference or anything else. We got charged 3 TIMES original price of our dish. When we confronted the staff, they started getting defensive and wouldn't let us speak to the manager. 'I'm in charge'. They tried to amend it by saying they'll give us a discount or don't leave tip. Nah b, we pay you in FULL and left the tip for the waiter that actually served us. Avoid at all cost. As a food lover, this is the ONLY place I've ever hated and want to tell people not to give their money to. Bland Chinese food with no redeeming quality. Looking at other reviews here like Marie C, seems like they pull this unethical stuff frequently. Gets calls out for bad practices and doesn't change. F#&$ you, cheers.

LifeListener X.

Yelp
Don't look at the rating for this authentic Chinese restaurant. The 3 stars is underrated. This is the place to go when I am in the area. They are always packed on the holidays and weekends, mostly asian people. The food is spot on. The portion is great. They have been in business for years and that say something.

B B.

Yelp
Well, never got to try this place after seeing on Insta Gram because upon arrival the customer service was almost non-existent. Let's just say if you are not of Asian descent your not welcome. When someone did come to the front HE addressed the couple that pushed through after us, then proceeded to answer the phone, then attended to someone else that came in again before asking us if he could help us. Ssid there were no tables BUT clearly there were about 5 empty tables(could have been on reserved) but HE never communicated that. My daughter proceeded to say well we cam to try some dishes we saw in your IG page, then it was go outside and wait(even opening the door) it might a table available in 20 minutes. We went out and kept it moving. Customer service and how you communicate to your guests is very important! Won't go back there. Star rating should be a 0

Edward W.

Yelp
This is a 3.5 star review. I went here recently with my family and we ordered: * steamed razor clams with garlic and vermicelli * fried squab * pineapple shrimp in taro pot * sweet and sour pork * fried Chinese noodle fish with chives * stir fried pea pod stems with minced garlic * fried garlic chicken * fried cod fish with bean curd and mushrooms The razor clams, sweet and sour pork, and fried garlic chicken were very good. The fried squab had a bit of a freezer smell to it. The noodle fish in the chives dish was a bit soggy and oily. Overall, the food was pretty good.
