The 26 Best Restaurants in Anchorage, Alaska | Eater

"This South Anchorage restaurant/bar with an attached coffee house goes big on atmosphere. The windows may have a view of a neighboring gravel pit operation, but the feel inside is airy and modern with local art. Find excellent espresso and light breakfast and lunch fare at the coffee shop, while the bar specializes in craft gin cocktails. Over in the dining room, the menu offers specials that often include Alaska produce and seafood, and a variety of small plates like polenta fries, warm dips and charcuterie. The place is family friendly, with a kids menu, and reservations are suggested on weekend evenings." - Julia O'Malley

We came to this restaurant on a Sunday morning and it was packed! We ended up sitting at the bar. The food was delicious and very filling but it did take quite a while for it to come out which was a disappointing. The staff were super friendly and attentive. I would recommend making a reservation before coming here if you do not want a long wait!

Google
Picture it: peak tourist season, July in Alaska. It's a Saturday night and we need a reservation for 10 and no one is taking reservations. And then South came through! We had a great table in a private area. The service was on point - helpful, prompt, and professional. Let's get to the food -- the star of this experience. I'm a sucker to try French onion soup whenever possible but I'll also judge your establishment based on the quality of this dish and the French onion here is OUTSTANDING. The crab cakes with the poblano sauce were also unbelievably good. In fact, our table of 10 didn't have a dish that wasn't excellent. I'll be back if I'm back in town again.

Stopped here for dessert, and it was scrumptious! There were some creative items on the menu, and our tea came in aesthetic little glass bulbs. Service was informative, professional, and extremely friendly. The whole restaurant is very cute--modern but cozy.

Google
Visiting my friend and popped in for breakfast. We went to the coffee first. We ordered a dirty chai and mocha. Because the coffee is freshly made expect a little wait time. The dirt chai was amazing. We then went over to dine. We were sat immediately. The server was very nice and accommodating. We ordered the death by bacon sandwich, Benedict with crab plus scallop cake and a single order of the sourdough pancake. The sourdough pancake was seriously unique. I loved that it was crepe like. You can taste a hint of sourdough. The death by bacon was extremely flavorful. The Benedict was amazing and the brioche bread it as served on was super soft. You won’t go wrong ordering any of these items.

Google
Amazing brunch with lots of options, comparable food to any famous brunch spot in Vancouver where I'm from. Very beautiful and clean decor with cute details, staff were very professional and nice. I got the croque madame which was excellent, the salad has a nice dressing. My husband got the death by bacon sandwich which was excellent, the garlic aoli on it is bomb!! We also got a biscuit with jam on the side which I highly recommend, the jam is all natural made in Seattle which was a nice touch. They had local paintings on the wall for sale which looked very good. We sat near a birthday party in the next room, looked like a nice private long table for parties that I'd recommend. Definitely going back for brunch soon.

Google
We went to South Restaurant for brunch and needed a reservation—understandable, as it's easily one of the nicest spots in South Anchorage. The ambiance was modern and inviting, and the service was attentive throughout. I ordered the shakshuka, which was flavorful and clearly made with fresh, natural ingredients. The eggs were cooked well, but the pancakes were a letdown—unfortunately bland and lacking depth. While the prices felt a bit steep for the overall experience, I’d still give it another shot.

Google
I have been here as least a handful of Time over the year for brunch, lunch, birthday célébration, happy hour, etc. Everything I have ordered from appetizers, drinks, entrées and desserts have been delicious and wonderfully presented. Service is always attentive and prompt. Mine favorite has been the pasta seafood, Mushroom Ajillo, clams, calamari, Pita lamb, etc. I had the macadam croquette once for brunch and that was a little too heavy for me. When we come with the kids, there is a good selection for them as well. Love the trendy decor and the seasonal menu. We seen big party here to couples just going out. My friend who I usually go out to dinner with usually get their carrot cake for dessert. And the drinks are very well made and pretty. Would highly recommend and will come back again.

Google
Pretty restaurant. Louis, our server, was great. Food was so so. Our son didn't get his fruit appetizer and it took forever to get our meal, even though the place was only maybe 30% full. Kebab plate was good except for the chicken- It was super dry. Fries were way too salty.

Yelp
Went with my g'daughter. One of her favs. Great food, menu & atmosphere. Trying to set up our next reservation & take family for the lower 48.

Yelp
Wings Beet salad. Calamari ( best in the country. ) Service. All excellent. Wine....By the glass. Mediocre. But then again. I was too cheap to buy a bottle.

Yelp
Get Patricia for your server. Positively the best. My wife and I shared the impossible burger on brioche bun and it was excellent. The fries were good Grandchildren had the French toast. Really good. My daughter had the croque madame and said it was her favorite. The Adam and Steve drink was fabulous! Not cheap. But recommended.

Yelp
When my husband and I go there for brunch we are never disappointed. Service is always on point and the food, drinks and vibe there is fabulous. We are always telling people to go there for brunch!

Yelp
I had a wonderful experience here. The atmosphere was great - loved the look of the place. The server at the bar was professional and had a great vibe. Most importantly, my sandwich was DELICIOUS. I felt fueled for my day of hiking after eating here!

Yelp
Always a pleasant experience at South. Great customer service from when you walk in the door. During summer months I would highly recommend at least getting on the waitlist for the weekend visits. Full bar, with monthly special drinks. We've been coming here on& off for a while. Never disappointed. Very trendy with the locals & tourist. Cute inside with country farm house vibes, glass barn doors, wood benches, bright open & still cozy. Great for date nights or outings with friends.

Yelp
Yum. Yum. YUM! Food was delicious. Service (Quentin) was exceptional. I could have eaten five different things and been ecstatic ... it was very difficult to narrow it down. I had Love on a Plate. It was a wonderful blend of flavors. My fella had biscuits and gravy (loved them). My son had amazing French toast with a side of bacon. It wasnt crispy enough for his taste ("crispy" is a sacrilege!!) so he gave me a piece. Oh my GOODNESS! That may be the best bacon I've ever v er had.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent. As an egg cook for twenty years on tour, this was the first perfect over medium egg I've had in public. Perfect. Excellent flavor, great signature drinks. Lovely fresh coffee. Had avocado toast with coffee, breakfast burrito with chorizo (a healthy, less greasy chorizo), and espresso martini. Also great atmosphere, good vibes, pleasant professional service. And I love that it's women owned and run!

Yelp
Nice decor and feel... smells amazing! Liked - Liked - Liked - Liked - Liked - Liked - Liked - Liked - Liked The bar and service was amazing! Great recommendations, fun personalities. We had a great time. We came closer to their closing time but that did not matter, they were still accommodating and never rushed us! Drinks where phenomenal! The scallops and risotto ... chefs kiss!!! The caramel on the cheesecake was heavenly. Not too rich but just enough of that buttery caramel goodness. Disliked / Disliked / Disliked / Disliked / Disliked / Disliked / I couldn't pinpoint anything that I disliked about this experience. Everything went great!

Yelp
I haven't been here in years. The after taste of the classic benedict tastes like dish soap. I feel sick. Yuck
google avatar

Yelp
Good food. Got the Mac and cheese and added fried chicken at the recommendation of the waiter. Mac and cheese was very good. Also got the French dip which was okay. The drinks were excellent.

Yelp
Great breakfast. Good drinks. Portions of breakfast food wasn't too large. Would definitely visit again.

Yelp
I love this place. My only group is price. I understand it's nice stuff. But it seems to be having the southside tax. The southside taxes, any place that charges a little bit of a premium being on southside. It's not too bad here, but the price is definitely different than some of the other locations The food is fantastic. I have not had a bad meal here. My wife loves the boomtown pasta with fried chicken. I like anything that's on the menu honestly have not tried anything, but I didn't like. Places a little bit upscale, but you can still show up in your muck boots I'm not be turned away. They have a fantastic gin selection and that's why I like this location. Also, it's closer to my home.

Yelp
Came for dinner with some friends. I got a mango bramble drink with dried flowers- no alcohol but fancy! I probly wouldn't get it again, was supposed to have but didn't taste any and I had to mix it to taste ok. Too much floral taste to it. For dinner since I wasn't very hungry I didn't get my usual. Instead I tried the Mac and cheese and it was very tasty! Very creamy with sharp white cheddar, penne noodles, and bacon. The bacon was very salty. Cheese was not gritty or anything. I also got a side Caesar salad. It was fine. Do t think it had parm cheese and not a lot of croutons. I think they messed up on our food because other tables seated way after us got their food fast. I think they may have accidentally given one plate to the wrong table and had to remake. However the server never relayed any info to us. We were just observant. My friend didn't like her halibut and the rice was cold that came with it. They took it off her check and she got the Mac and cheese cause she tried a bite of mine. The portion is like a little cast iron skillet about 6" maybe. Not too big but fine paired with a salad or really to share as a side. I want to try the Mediterranean platter but don't want to pay $30 for it. I've gotten the same server twice in a row and he is ok, kind of quiet and awkward but gets the job done. Maybe tell us when there was a problem so we are t waiting extra for our food when we see other people getting theirs.

Yelp
Food was very good atmosphere was electric very lively people were enjoying themselves the wait staff were attentive

Yelp
Frankly, a little underwhelming. First, I wanted to say that the three hostesses at the front were a little rude. They didn't greet us and seemed to have attitudes. It was a 35 minute wait but I assumed it would be like that for a Sunday lunch--I was kind and understanding so I'm not sure what I did to deserve that treatment at what was supposed to be a nice restaurant. I ran into a friend at the restaurant and she said she almost left because of how rude the hostesses were. The traditional mimosa might as well have been orange juice with a drop of prosecco. There are better mimosas in town. The classic benedict was underwhelming. Definitely wouldn't get it again; I've just had better, being honest. Our server was great. The calamari was good. I probably won't come back.

Yelp
They have one of the best brunch menus in town! On my most recent visit, I ordered the French toast served with fresh strawberries. This is easily one of the best French toasts in town! I enjoyed a "dirty Diana" which is champagne,, grapefruit, creme de violette, honey simple syrup. It pairs really well with the French toast. Service was excellent as usual. The bar staff was friendly and very helpful. Will definitely return for more.

Margaux F.

Yelp
Ambiance is amazing, food is so good and the wait staff is super kind and friendly. I would absolutely recommend.

Yelp
Magnolia Farms | French Press | Brunch Magnolia Farms - the overall ambience and decor of the restaurant feels like Joanna Gaines and Magnolia Farms. if you like the HDTV show and the aesthetic in their magazine, then you will love the overall fuel vibe of the restaurant. French Press Coffee: myself and a colleague ordered the French press coffee for two which should be a French press coffee for one that has 2 cups. The coffee was delicious but the portion we thought was gonna be a little bit bigger so if you plan on having 2 cups of coffee, just get the press coffee for two for yourself. Brunch - overall this place has a great brunch five to it. We went on a Sunday morning around 9 AM. The menu is only about a third when you go that early you have to wait till 11 AM to get the full menu therefore highly recommend you put in a reservation for a little bit later if you want to get a solid brunch. Pro tip: tons of parking. Pro tip: this spot is very popular on the weekends. Therefore, you should put in for a reservation.

Yelp
Okay ... so let me break down my 2nd experience here. Cute place .. absolutely love the little bar area ! However, at the very end near the kitchen it's to much stuff taking up the bar. Weird to enjoy your food. Service is trash .1 star. It's like pulling teeth for the bartender to interact or take your order. An amazing couple said we are leaving you can have our seats. Perfect right ! However, I watched the bartender take the bill looked at the amount and mumbled something. This was a great opportunity to clean the plates and cups up. However, she sat the cup and water down. So I poured my water and went to the restroom. When I returned I still had three cups so now I need a fresh cup because I don't know which one is mine. Bartender: Short lady which long ponytail... She is a beautiful YOUNG lady and knows her drinks. 5 stars THERE.. but she has NO PERSONALITY,NO AWARENESS, SHE NEVER ASK HOW IS EVERYTHING, DO YOU ALL NEED ANYTHING, Nothing. 17 years in this industry I would expect more from a bartender. We knew there was a shift change because she went on doing her side work and never returned :(! Horrible service for a beautiful place and person. Bartender 2 Tall bartender with glasses.. again no self awareness, you have to ask for everything .. May I have a fork, may I have jelly, may I have some napkins, will you please remove these old dishes, will you please take this away we are done. Between these 2 young ladies on Saturday service was definitely a 1star. I rated as a 4 because a restaurant as a whole should not be judge by one or two bad apples. I would definitely go again and hopefully would have better service Food: $20 burrito- rated 4 it delicious 2 tacos-$21 it's amazing rated 4 needed just a little season :) will order again.

Yelp
Hungry for just a salad at lunchtime. South did not disappoint. Got the regular garden salad with grilled chicken added. It was very good. Fresh lettuce and carrots, chicken was good. Ranch dressing is a bit heavy on the garlic--but tasty, so if you have an interview or appointment afterward, make sure you have gum or mints. The outdoor seating area looks very nice and cozy.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing!! No surprise that the restaurant group was a James Beard semi-finalist. The buratta was perfectly creamy and smooth. The roasted tomatoes, garlic and pesto was perfect layers together. The cauliflowers were light and flavorful. The salted caramel cheesecake was absolutely amazing. Fun environment that is comfortable with just enough buzz. The service was fantastic. As somebody visiting for work and who travels all over the country, this is one of the best restaurants around.

Yelp
Food & service was very good. Our server was friendly and willing to give us her best recommendations which I did take and ended up having the corn beef hash and it was excellent.
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
Our breakfast was one of the best meals we had in Alaska. There were good options for vegetarians including Beyond Breakfast Sausage allowing us to actually pick and choose what we wanted. Service was friendly and prompt, there was a good mix of people enjoying their start to the day, and the coffee was very good. There was artwork on the walls from a local artist which we assume were available for purchase. Our time waiting for our order was spent discussing which piece we would purchase, if we were looking to spend money on artwork. I really, really enjoyed the well seasoned Shakshuka and a side of Beyond Sausage. My partner had the very good Huevos Divorciados with vegan chorizo (!). All the Vegetarian and Vegan options were clearly identified on the menu. We felt like we were in heaven. There was no 'service' surcharge, much appreciated

Yelp
I love this place. Of course any restaurant that is great has a wait list. It's so worth it. The staff are always so sweet. The portions of the food sizes is enough to feed two people. The place is clean and bright. The caffe to the right just as cute. Staff in there are all so sweet.

David W.

Yelp
Maybe the worst food in anchorage-- panini was inedible with a grotesque agglomeration of sweet onion relish, cranberry sauce Turkey roll wilted lettuce all on a thin piece of generic bread --& the sticky bun ($8.50) had three pecan fragments and dough that you sculpt with -- absolutely inedible
google avatar

Yelp
Very modern restaurant and cool ambience. Went here for a late brunch Sunday with friends and it was so busy and a bit chaotic. Service was a bit slow and they didn't bus the table for a while when we were already sitting down. The food itself was really good though. Got the fried polenta as an app and Mediterranean bowl. Chicken was a bit dry in the bowl but otherwise good flavors.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
Great spot for coffee, brunch, lunch, or dinner! They have a coffee shop connected to the restaurant with lots fun drinks, pastries, and to-go items. Both the restaurant and coffee shop had a great vibe. I had a quality cesar salad with salmon and polenta sticks for the appetizer. We came back for brunch the following day and it was equally as good! Service was good and took into account gluten free needs.
google avatar

Patrick C.

Yelp
Prior to yesterday I had never had dinner here but after our evening I must say I will be going back again. Our food was absolutely amazing apps, entrees, and desserts. The service was first class and very pleasant and took great care of us. Very happy and look forward to going again!

Yelp
Abstract - To be honest, this a restaurant they my spouse and I frequent. So I feel like I am a bit biased. This is a place that we are willing come to during tourist season. Knowing there will be a wait and just check in online before coming to the restaurant. Love the food, the vibe, and the service. It's worth giving it a shot if you around. Especially for BRUNCH. Food more in depth: I got a classic Croque Madame. Which is my go to. Rich and flavorful sauce on amazing brioche. With perfectly cooked eggs, asparagus, and a refreshing salad. My wife got a special from the fresh sheet. It was a Ham and Brie sandwich and was delicious. Service: This time it was great. Which is normal. No complaints. Attentive, efficient, and respectful. Ambiance: Love the vide of this place. I really like how they hang up locally made art around the restaurant. Which they change out monthly I believe. Some of stuff is really good and fun to look at and the little changes is always nice. Plus they support local art.

Yelp
Our server Genevieve was great. Between her and the ambience of the place, it was nice. The food was good for Alaska, however, there were minor errors in the order. Would certainly come try their breakfast, but would opt for elsewhere for a burger.

Carrie M.

Yelp
Great experience. The food was delicious, I had the butter burger. The desert was great and overall the staff were busy and pleasant. We had a large corner table and it was quiet and a nice. Less salt on meat though, just a suggestion we can add it.
google avatar

Gabriele E.

Yelp
The food here was delicious! My husband had the reindeer sausage and he loved it so much. The sourdough pancake was different from what I'm used to but I loved it. I did the Benedict and the hollandaise was great and the potatoes were seasoned perfectly. Would come back again!

Jacque B.

Yelp
Great place great atmosphere, we are from az and gave this place a chance. Coffee was awesome, the reindeer sausage was on point, great customer service!!
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
South is my favorite restaurant in Anchorage! I could eat here every day multiple times a day and never get bored. I love the huge windows, bright light, and decor. My favorite items are all the coffee drinks from the fresh sheet and the Croque Madame! I'm not a biscuits and gravy person but I even like their biscuits and gravy. The service is sometimes hit or miss but the food is always fantastic!
google avatar

Kristine Y.

Yelp
This is the place to be if you want brunch any day in Anchorage! Their menu has quite a variety of meals to choose from for lunch and a drink menu to match! It's a happy open, yet rustic place in a small center. Love the vibe and the people. Everyone seems super happy and inviting. We absolutely LOVED our server. She was friendly and funny. At our table just the perfect amount of time to give us great service and a laugh yet not overbearing. Love, love, love! The food was yummy and warm. All seem cooked with the freshest ingredients. You and taste each and every flavor on your plate which makes for a great foodie experience. We were so happy with the food and the experience as a whole. Given time I would definitely come back!

Patrick F.

Yelp
It started poorly and went downhill from there. We had reservations, showed up on time, and still had to wait almost 15 minutes even though there were several open tables - no explanation. The two young women at the front station were oblivious. The menu showed an Alaskan Brewing revolving beer selection which, after some mental gymnastics with the server, we were told was a cider. In my world cider isn't beer, but the server, a somewhat clueless young man, didn't seem to care. I ordered a dinner salad with added scallops for an additional $13. My meal came with 4 of the smallest scallops I've ever seen ($4.25 each) and didn't have the pepperoncinis that were shown on the menu. I pointed this out to the server, and he brought them, but no apology for getting it wrong, just indifference. It appears that the staff didn't understand they are in the service business. There are many very good restaurants in Anchorage, so don't waste your time and money here, you can do much better.
google avatar

Britt R.

Yelp
Server was nice Food was so bland, honestly NO flavor with exception of Lollipop pork chop with overwhelming flavor of mustard. Can say the fries tasted good out of the $195 bill... party of 4 only 3 glasses of wine. I have kept trying over the years, and last time the Mediterranean bowl didn't seem so last minute, but keep being disappointed. Three stars since place is clean, staff nice, but not a place I'd crave ever.

Yelp
Our last full day in Anchorage we stopped by South Restaurant for lunch and I couldn't have had a better parting lunch. We were warned it could be busy and we may have to wait by the family who recommended South Restaurant, but we were immediately greeted and seated for lunch. Indeed it was busy and I think we got lucky. I was charmed with the space finding my eyes drifting over everything. It had a fun aesthetic with many details from the flooring transitions to the cross beams installed for the light fixtures. I loved the wall art, I loved the booth like tables separated by high white walls looking like little cubbies. It had a cafe vibe. Then I noticed the mini rubber duckies hidden here and there. These were bright and colorful and too many to be coincidental finding them on various fixtures hanging from the ceiling. It was very comfortable. The drinks were stellar. Being a fan of Empress Gin I ordered the Empress and was highly impressed. It was refreshing, light, and delicious. Being on a French dip kick this trip I ordered French Dip minus onions and thought it was great. The roll was substantial but not overpowering. The meat tender. The perfect amount of cheese and horseradish sour cream kicked it up a notch. It was an awesome meal. Our service was equally delightful. Despite how busy it was she had impeccable timing never leaving us wanting for drinks. She checked in with us after we received our food and closed us out promptly. She had great recommendations, a charming demeanor, and a welcoming presence. My small group was very pleased.

Yelp
Amazing, as always. The chorizo onion dip is my absolute favorite app, and they do a great filet! But they have lots of unique dishes to try.

Yelp
This was my first time eating at South Restaurant and let me say I was not disappointed. The service was excellent, very kind and attentive. The food was great, I have no complaints. The restaurant itself was very inviting with a great vibe.

Chad A M.

Yelp
Had happy hour appetizers at 4 pm today. The food was horrible. Had chicken wings and the gyro sandwich. The lamb was chewy and grizzly and the wings were awful. The only thing good was the beer. Won't go back. They have made it ten years but have decided to cut back on quality of food they serve.

Yelp
The restaurant is tucked away, close to Lowe's south. We met another couple here for brunch and waited in the coffee shop attached while they were getting our table ready. I really like the ambiance of the restaurant, very chic decor throughout. The hostess was very friendly and the coffee shop staff were very attentive. We sat down and our waitress was also the bartender. She was nice and made sure that we were taken cared of. The food came out at a reasonable time. I ordered the Vegas baby omelette and it was good. The portions were huge. I also tried the biscuits and gravy, it reminded me of this restaurant located in Portland. I really liked that it was not your typical biscuits and gravy. I absolutely loved my matcha drink. The matcha with pistachio- I love love love!! Thinking about it, I would return just for it. Hands down. Anyways..overall great experience.

Debbie L.

Yelp
Not sure I'll be back. I understand a "no reservations"Same day policy to a degree BUT...we waited two hours for a party of 5. Checked in a few times with hostess staff as they weren't that busy and had been told an hour to an hour and a half. Our answers? We can't tell you how much longer...we are just playing it by ear. We said that 3 of us were really small so we could just sit in a booth, that we did not need a table to accommodate five or six. We were told in a very snotty tone that that did not help and they still were playing it by ear and could not tell us how long it would be. After two hours and 15 minutes we left. Nobody cared. After watching on yelp, we were number 11 in line. An hour and a half later we were number 10 in line. Even though we watched nine or 10 parties be seated our seating order never went down. It was more about the super snotty attitude of the hostesses.

Yelp
I've taken all my out of town visitors to South and had a lovely experience each time. Service is great and the ambiance and food do not disappoint. I highly recommend reservations in advance over the summer. The cocktails and dinner menu are solid. Desserts are delicious. The coffee and breakfast are also excellent.

John M.

Yelp
Enjoyed Easter brunch with my family and bought treats on our way out. Staff is amazing. Attentive, bartenders are magical. Go here often! Can't miss
