The 15 Best Fried Chicken Spots In Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"What began as a single food truck serving a stellar sandwich is now a mini-empire. Go for the OG sando for something sweet, spicy, and crunchy, or order the five-piece combo topped with chili honey, crispy shallots, and herbs. Either way, this Southeast Asian-influenced spot delivers on flavor." - nicolai mccrary

Best Fried Chicken in Austin | Eater Austin

"The east side truck with four other locations throughout the city (St. Elmo, North Austin, Rainey, far east Austin) offers up a spicer take on fried chicken, made with a spiced batter and served with chile honey. Takeout orders can be placed online; all locations feature indoor and outdoor dine-in areas courtesy of host sites." - Nadia Chaudhury

The Best Bars And Restaurants On Rainey Street

"We’re big fans of the O.G. fried chicken sandwich at Spicy Boys, which is dressed with papaya relish, Thai basil ranch, chili-honey sauce, scallions, and crispy shallots. But if the weather isn’t already making you sweat, you can add a little more heat with the Hot Gai. It’s a little spicier and comes with the addition of swiss cheese—a somewhat controversial move in the world of fried chicken sandwiches, but one that we’re fully on-board with. " - raphael brion, nicolai mccrary

Best Fried Chicken Sandwiches in Austin | Eater Austin

"The pan-Asian East Austin food truck with four locations is all about chicken, which includes an array of fried chicken sandwiches (which are also available as vegetarian tempeh). There’s the original, which is drenched in sweet chili and honey sauce. Iterations include one with massaman mayonnaise and Swiss cheese or the mega-spicy one with a chile-toasted bun and Thai chile ranch sauce. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are typically indoor and outdoor dine-in areas at host sites." - Erin Russell

Nut allergy friendly! There was no one in front of us and it took us 13 minutes to get our order (notified via text). A food truck located inside of Half Step Cocktails, this stop might be the best value on Rainey. For $18 (after tax and tip) we got the Hot Nugs and Tingly Tots. The tots were just the right amount of numbing spicy and perfectly crispy, and the Hot Nugs were well balanced with spice and sweetness and the two lime wedges were perfect for it. I'd say the nugs could be a little crispier but were overall solid. The portions were enough to be a hefty snack for two people! As with every other stop on Rainey, parking is awful to impossible. We also had a slight miss in service where I got a sandwich instead of nugs at first, but thankfully I was eating near the bar and returned and got the right order. Overall, would totally return if I find myself on Rainey again.

Google
The best chicken tenders/nuggets I’ve ever had! The coating of sweet chili sauce was delicious. The batter was exceptional - not too thick and very crispy!! Also a huge portion size for $10.

Google
Good fried chicken spot. Sandwiches are made fresh from your order and ready in 5 minutes. Tastes good for its price ($10/sandwich) but doesn’t necessarily extinguish itself from its peers. Still would recommend the spot just not the most amazing chicken sandwich I have had.

Google
Spicy Boys is one of the best food trucks on Rainey Street. It’s also very convenient that they are located inside the Half Step outdoor patio. I tried the Nugs, which are boneless chicken chunks with different seasonings. Delicious dish! I had some issues with the online order, so the staff gave me some complimentary tater tots.

Google
Some of the best spicy fried chicken I have ever had… and I don’t say this lightly. A perfect mix between crispy spicy Nashville chicken and sweet/sour Thai flavors. Magic. Price and flavor A++

Google
Phenomenal fried chicken! I ordered the bone-in chicken and decidedly was taken by surprise by how crispy the skin was. The sauce was also flavorful and mildly spicy, and the meat was tendered. I can do a little bit less salt, but that is just my personal preference. Definitely live up to its reputation, and I will for sure come back here again!

Google
One word: EXCELLENT ❗ My wife and I had the 5 piece bone in chicken, and this a must get meal if you're every in Austin, on Rainey St. The chicken was extremely tender, juicy, and every bite was full of flavor! The guys in the trailer were extremely polite, and fast with the order. DO NOT let this spot pass you by. *** Side note: my apologies for the pictures of the aftermath. We devoured the dish due to the smell and 1st taste of this beautiful meal. 🤷‍♂️

Pretty good friend chicken burger We had the OG. But the best thin is you can eat it in the bar next to it and have a drink ( either inside or outside )

Yelp
Really liked their OG chicken sandwich. The papaya salad adds a good crunchy touch. It had an Asian twist to it rather than the typical Nashville hot chicken sandwiches.

Yelp
Nate and I were in the area and wanted a snack, so we checked out the Spicy Boys Fried Chicken food truck located outside the Half Step. I was super bummed to see that they were out of the boneless nugs, but we ordered the OG fried chicken sandwich: sweet chili honey, papaya relish, and Thai basil ranch. There were two other spice levels above the OG, but when your name has the word "spicy" in it, I'm expecting things to be a bit hot. The sandwich was hot and fresh when it was done, and was a good portion for us to split for a small snack. However, it was not spicy at all! Nate was sad and would've ordered the two flame version if he knew it wasn't going to be spicy at all. I thought that the texture of the papaya salad on the sandwich was a little bit weird, but it's different and unique. The chicken itself was tender and juicy inside, which was good. Overall I was kind of let down by this food, but I'd try it again if I was in the area or near their other locations.

Yelp
This food truck was an amazing find! Dare I say best meal I had there The price point was great for the amount of food you got. The chicken was DELICIOUS !!! Cooked all the way through, crispy, and the different flavors were just perfect together . Tots were crispy and spicy ... once again perfect. GO GET YOU SOME

Yelp
It was a pretty warm summer evening on Rainey Street, but I had a cold beer in hand and figured some fried chicken would pair well with it. I didn't have the appetite for a whole chicken sandwich so I decided to order the boneless nugs instead. I ordered the Sichuan oil since I was expecting it to be aromatic and numbing, but instead found that it was primarily just spicy. I also thought that the single wedge of lime wasn't enough to cut through the grease, and the spicy ranch sauce only made it more salty and oily. Overall, the nugs were decent but nothing special - it was probably too warm a day to be having fried food and I may have been too ambitious with the spice level. But, I'd be super interested to come back and try the chicken sandwiches, which seem to use papaya salad instead of slaw.

Yelp
Easy ordering, quick service, really compliments the area and Zilker beer garden. OG Chicken sandwich is a delightful mix of thigh, papaya slaw and sauce - really unique. Don't miss the tots, really make the meal.

Yelp
Late night spicy chicken sandwich? Yes, please! Located just outside of the Half Step bar, this truck served up some great tots and a variety of spicy chicken sandwiches. Food was quick and hot and crispy. We sat at Half Step with a cocktail and downed our food. The OG had great toppings and wasn't too spicy.
google avatar

Johnny H.

Yelp
Food was Amazing, the OG was legit as they come. The tots were the best I've seen. The chicken wings were hitting on all cylinders. Words can't describe this place. I had been eying it for a while and got the opportunity and was not let down. One of the best food trucks I've seen in Austin. The Honey on the OG went crazy, and the seasoning on the tots was perfection. I still can't wrap my mind around how good this spot is.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a good chicken sandwich especially after a long night of drinks! Tater tots were so crunchy too! There was an issue with the online ordering so we had to place our order at the window on a busy night. It took some time for our food but it was worth the wait. Get there early to try a variety of the options as they tend to run out the later it gets.

Yelp
I was in Austin during SXSW & it's an early night. I'm hungry & with a lot of walking being involved, I needed something to satisfy my craving along with rewarding myself. Spicy Boys was spotted amongst other food trucks. I love this place. The dude who took the order was nice & patient (it was a big order). I got the OG (chicken sandwich) & the (Tingly) Tater Tots. The sandwich came with sweet chili honey, Thai basil ranch & papaya relish. The perfect combination of sweet & salty, nice sized piece of chicken. The tots have their classic seasoning along with tingly sichuan sauce. The sauce has a nice slight kick at the end of every bite. Very good. I recommend that one over the classic (comes with ketchup). Spicy Boys is one of those spots I'd recommend to anyone making their way to Austin. I'd make it a ritual to have this a stop every time I head out that way.

Yelp
This place is literally fire! The chicken sandwich was a perfect balance of sweet and spicy with the papaya salad. Also, the tingly tots were my favorite menu item, they come with a yummy dipping sauce. Excited to try the nuggets next time! Staff is super friendly too.

Yelp
Can't go wrong with Spicy Boys fried chicken Sandwiches. They're one of the best in the game. My preferred order is the Hot Gai (it's like their medium option) with special add of papaya salad and a side of hot ranch. The OG isn't that spicy for me, but I really love their slaw, so to be able to add that into a sandwich that has tastefully more heat is right on the money for me. Located in Rainey Street, you'll thank me after a night out or as a mid-bar hop snack

Yelp
I had been wanting to try out Spicy Boys since I moved to Austin. I finally got the chance to try it at my favorite bar on Rainey, Half-Step, last night and it was amazing. I have had a lot of fried chicken sandos in my life, but there is something about the Hot Gai that makes me think that it might be the best one I've been eaten. The chicken was so crispy and perfectly cooked. Those toppings work so damn well together and make it so different from any other fried chicken sandwich I've had. Because it was perfectly cooked, had the right amount of crispy chicken to a soft buttery bun, and was so unique in flavor profile (...the basil. Game changer.) actually make it one of the best fried chicken sandwich I've had so far. The only thing that might have made this sandwich better is if they were a bit less shy with the chili oil and broiled that piece of cheese so it would be nice and melted on the sandwich. The staff was so polite and even brought my order out to me once it was ready.

Yelp
Hands down THE best chicken I've ever had. 5 pics was not enough. I mean don't get me wrong, I was full up but I wanted more of that spicy goodness. And tender! Sweet Jesus...tender, mild spicy, flavorful and filling. I want to fly to Austin once a week to come here!

Yelp
Had the five piece bone-in for $10.99 after a few beers in the Half Step next door. Perfect combo. Delicious and just the right amount of spice to make it hot but not too hot. Highly recommended.

Ethan B.

Yelp
First off food is amazing and second off the portions for the price are amazing. The staff was very nice and friendly, and parking was actually not too bad. The hot gai sandwich was 9/10 tots were a 9/10 and they give you so many tots omg i was so surprised lol. The meal was 17 with a tip and i was very satisfied.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came for a work trip and randomly walked into Half Step cocktails when we noticed the Spicy Boys food truck.. holy shit. This is probably the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. We had the OG, the slaw mixed with the Thai basil sauce and chicken sauce was amazing. There is absolutely nothing like it, it's a way better version of a Nashville hot chicken sandwich, incomparable. Shoutout to Nate for bringing us the food too!! Anytime I'm in Austin it's a must. We'll be back!!
google avatar

Moni D.

Yelp
This chicken is very good. Juicy and tender. Good amount of heat but not overpowering. We actually saw another truck in a different area and got another order! It comes with a honey glaze but I prefer the savory spicy flavor so I had it on the side. It was great for dipping. The crust is very crispy and satisfying for a fried chicken connoisseur. I personally felt it needed a pinch of salt but I could blame that on the long term effects of Covid. Its good chicken. Get some!!
google avatar

Andre E.

Yelp
Delicious sandwich. I got the OG chicken sandwich and the Chicken was Crispy with the perfect amount of spice. Great flavors. Guy who took my order was nice and super friendly. I will definitely be back!

Josh H.

Yelp
Food came out quick. Chicken was delicious. Tots were crispy and well seasoned. I'll be back.
google avatar

Reilley C.

Yelp
Best chicken in all of the world. I don't mean to be dramatic but this chicken slaps. Whatever spice goes on the chicken is something I'm willing to worship lol I've also had their buffalo cauliflower and it's amazing but super spicy :)

Fernando A.

Yelp
Great food. Some of the best fried chicken in Austin. The price is great for the area too. Best food truck on Rainey!
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place more, great concept just a bit of strange flavor for me. Not bad, just not for me.

Anna C.

Yelp
Hella good nugs. Underestimated how good these would be. I got the classic which still had a decent amount of spice but were so good with fresh lime juice. Would 10/10 recommend, unfortunately I ate them all before taking a picture!
google avatar

JoAnn H.

Yelp
Great chicken sandwiches and tater tots! Enjoyed our drinks next door and when our sandwiches were ready we got a text and the food was hot and ready. Nice job!
google avatar

Bo B.

Yelp
Best mala tater tots and spicy chicken in this neighborhood for sure. Tater tots are my favorite thing to order on this street.
google avatar

Shravan V.

Yelp
Tried their tingly vegetarian burger and the first bite took me back to my homeland, Hyderabad, India. Haven't had a burger this flavorful anywhere in the USA. Their spicy mix resembles the peri peri mix you get in McDonalds India. Wish they opened up locations in Dallas, Texas. Every time I visit Austin, no matter what, I'm not leaving the town without having their burgers.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Stopped by half step for a drink and saw Spicy Boys food truck. Decided to give it a try and got the mild nuggs and OG chicken sandwich + spicy tots. All were *chefs kiss*. I will say if you get the spicy ranch, know that it IS very spicy Such great food!! Spicy tots were a tolerable spicy where you taste the spice but it's not overwhelming.
google avatar

Jeff A.

Yelp
Tried Spicy Boys Fried Chicken for first time. Was some of the best fried chicken I've ever eaten. Would high recommend them.

Anneliese S.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I live nearby so we come way more often than we should, but the food really is that good. We've tried a couple of their other locations as well and everything has been just delicious!
google avatar

Jake M.

Yelp
What can I say other than this RIGHT HERE? This is the point of life. Spicy Boys Fried Chicken ladies and gentleman. I'm a fried chicken connoisseur searching the world for the best fried chicken. This is ready to rival LAs Howlin' Rays, NOLAs Willie Mae's and African and Trinidadian recipes. Go here. Get messy. Salt the chicken with the tears of happiness that stream down your face with each bite. Wonder why they aren't a chain and then realize they are but they're wise business owners and are keeping overhead low. Make eyes with the girl across the picnic table indulging herself. Bond over the great equalizer: meat, on a bone, divinely prepared. I love you. This bird's death was not in vain. Amen.
google avatar

Marisa g.

Yelp
I ordered the cauliflower nuggets and tater tots. Both were so delicious!! Really big generous portion of the nuggets too. The flavors were so good and I even loved the Thai basil ranch despite normally hating ranch! Highly recommend. Great vegetarian option for this non vegetarian!
google avatar

Anand D.

Yelp
Delicious! Some of the best fried chicken sandwiches I've had. Currently, they have 3 different options. I had the medium spiced and will return to try the others.

Chris K.

Yelp
This is the best fried chicken sanga you'll ever have. The spice, the cheese, the sauce, the bun, the chicken. Don't @ me.

Tim K.

Yelp
Positively the best fried chicken I've ever had. I ordered the 5 piece spicy with bones and it was crispy, super moist on the inside. The little bit of Thai chili sauce was the perfect amount and flavor. I was more than pleasantly surprised. I wish these guys success.
google avatar

Jacinta T.

Yelp
FRIED CHICKEN FANATIC over here and man oh man, I would recommend this place to anyone!! Juicy, crispy, and the flavors were oh so good! Fried chicken sando was def our favorite, but the chicken wings were also very good! Great staff, too! I will definitely come back when I'm back in town!
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
Fuck me, seriously?!? Easily the best fried chicken I've had, ever. Yes, I'm old (notice the punctuation?). I'm the dad of all these awesome college students. Serious food, fun atmosphere. Great stuff. Thank you.

Justin M.

Yelp
If you are looking for the best food truck on rainey this is it. Don't waste your time. Just come here and never be able to view a chick fil a chicken sandwich the same way again
