Spitalfields - Review - Portobello - Dublin - The Infatuation

"From the outside, Spitalfields looks like any other gorgeous Victorian pub in Dublin where one Guinness turns into four and you promise to invite the barman whose name you forgot to your future wedding. But it isn’t. This is a polished pub restaurant serving modern British food like cock-a-leekie pie or rhubarb and lemongrass custard millefeuille. The barmen are charmers, pouring pints and telling stories like old-timers around a fire, and the food is comforting stuff. Sitting at the downstairs bar, dipping an oxtail-filled Parker House roll into gravy with a Guinness next to you, listening to a server recommend a dictionary’s worth of pubs to other visitors sitting at the bar, is a lovely way to get to know Dublin. photo credit: Dena Shearer photo credit: Dena Shearer photo credit: Dena Shearer Pause Unmute" - Jake Missing

Spitalfields

"Set in a historic area of this city is this fittingly traditional-looking Irish pub, where the charming staff offer a warm and friendly welcome. It’s deservedly busy – drinkers are welcome but most are here for the food. Enticing dishes are fresh, flavoursome and great value, with the likes of oxtail and bone marrow Parker House rolls." - Michelin Inspector

The 38 Essential Dublin Restaurants

"A beef cheek and oxtail Parker House roll with bone marrow gravy and a cock-a-leekie pie for two are just some of the reasons to visit Stephen Mcallister and Andrea Hussey’s deceptively sophisticated gastropub in the heart of the Liberties. This is the perfect spot for an early dinner before a concert in Vicar Street. Just be sure to book." - Corinna Hardgrave

Google
Spitalfields absolutely lived up to the hype. I went in already hungry and left wondering how soon I could come back. I started with the deviled eggs topped with caviar, which were simple little bites that somehow tasted luxurious. Then I had the bone marrow, rich and silky and the kind of dish that makes you stop talking so you can fully appreciate what is happening on your plate. The schnitzel was perfectly crisp, perfectly seasoned, and honestly perfect in every way. The whole place has a warm and inviting vibe, almost like stepping into someone’s very stylish dining room where everything smells amazing. The staff were friendly in that easy, natural way that makes you feel like a regular even on your first visit. It all came together for a meal that was delicious, comfortable, and memorable. Highly recommend.

Google
I didn’t get any Irish food prior to coming here. But it was recommended by my hotel concierge and I decided to visit. The service is awesome and I got my first taste of Guinness stout. Perhaps people here have a taste for salt so I would highly suggest that you should ask for less sodium if you want to keep to a low sodium diet. The restaurant owner / host is affable and kind and will let you feel comfortable right away.

We ordered the bitterballen, the oxtail and beef cheek bun with bone marrow jus, the mustard and dill–crusted scallop, and the chicken pie with bone marrow mash. Every plate showed care and balance. The bitterballen came with a crisp shell and a smooth, rich filling. The oxtail and beef cheek bun was deeply savory, and the bone marrow jus gave it real depth. The scallop was seared properly, its sweetness sharpened by a mustard and dill crust that added contrast without overwhelming. The chicken pie arrived with pastry only on top, something the staff let us know when serving. It was still a generous portion, though I would have liked more pastry. What stood out was the bone marrow mash, which carried flavor that lifted the whole dish. Service matched the food. Staff were warm, attentive, and easy to talk with, striking a good balance between friendly and professional. This is a kitchen that respects ingredients and nails the details. I’ll be back next time I make it to Dublin.

Google
Truly 10/10 for service and food. This Michelin Bib Gourmand features traditional Irish fare but with modern enhancements and flavors. Take for example the Hispi Cabbage, cooked in miso butter and served with crumbled cashew & sesame seeds. The Cock-a-Leekie Pie for two made with leeks, mushrooms, and chicken in a wine and stock broth is a MUST order — and yes, two people can indeed share it no problem! You definitely need to make sure you have room for dessert. Here you get the cozy pub experience with friendly staff and stand-out food!!

Google
Exceptional dining experience! A place everyone can enjoy. The “Cock-a-leeky” pie was outstanding and the desserts were pure heaven. Great vibe, with attentive and knowledgeable staff—couldn’t fault a thing. Just note that you need to order three dishes per person (including a main), but snacks and sides count, so it’s not as daunting as it sounds. Already looking forward to going back!

An unforgettable evening at Spitalfields We were absolutely thrilled with our visit to Spitalfields in Dublin. As soon as we walked in, we could feel the special atmosphere - a perfect blend of traditional pub cosiness and modern elegance. The food was simply outstanding. Each course was creatively prepared, flavoursome and beautifully presented. We were particularly impressed by the pie and the homemade desserts. The service was also excellent: attentive, friendly and pleasantly unobtrusive. We felt completely welcome and well looked after. The drinks menu also leaves nothing to be desired. We all agree that Spitalfields is one of the best places to eat in Dublin. We recommend it to anyone who values excellent food and warm hospitality. Quite clearly: 5 stars from us!

Google
Incredible. The iberico pork schnitzel and the bone marrow mashed potatoes blew me away. Literally one of the best dishes I had the chance to eat. Also lovely and nice staff. Had an excellent time. Will come again (and again) to check the rest of the menu.

Google
The food was nice but admittedly we felt like the prices reflected the award rather than the award reflected the food. It was very busy and very noisy. My husband and I were sat upstairs opposite the bar and we had to lean across the table to hear each other. We were waiting for over 30 minutes just for the drinks and being opposite the bar… says enough. We figured some of the staff had an off day and left it as that. The bone marrow mash was lovely, enough for two people to share and probably the highlight of the whole meal. Halibut was a tad dry but that’s personal preference. We booked 4 weeks in advance for this restaurant and had very high expectations, unfortunately we left feeling a bit ripped off and disappointed. We hope it was just an off night when we visited.

Yelp
What a lovely experience from the call hoping I could get a last minute reservation to the time I regrettably was full and had to leave. Charming restraint. The staff all so friendly and in the best demeanor. I felt like everyone knew my name by the time I was seated. Even the sweet 83 yr old regular named James was calling me by it. I joined him at the bar and had the nicest conversation and delicious meal. Jackson from behind the bar was gracious enough to engage in conversation when he could. I was encouraged to try the starter of fig, goat cheese, and smoked tomato. Halibut with aubergine, and a heavenly silky sauce balanced with butter, citrus, and herbs. Smashed potatoes that were better than I can make. Surely something decadent when they were fried. Recommend

Yelp
I was underwhelmed for the price. I ate out at several places in Dublin, and this was the most expensive and my least favorite. But I also appreciate what they're shooting for. I had the schnitzel, deviled eggs, roast carrots, chips, and parker house roll. I found most of the flavors lacking or imbalanced. Specifically, the carrots were undersalted and the schnitzel was oversalted for my taste. Caviar on the deviled eggs, while impressive, did not seem to add much. The chips were bland and not that crispy. I also didn't really get much depth of flavor from anything except the rolls. On the other hand, most items were well executed. The char on the carrots was lovely. The roll was golden brown. The crispiness of the schnitzel was unparalleled. The creaminess of the deviled eggs was very nice. And the Parker house roll was standouts (as divine as everyone says). The restaurant itself is charming and cozy. The service was unremarkable.

Yelp
Delicious delicious delicious. We ordered a lot of the smaller dishes on the menu so we could try more things but you can tell by the quality of the ingredients and the way they cooked that they put a lot of heart and soul into. Highly recommend making a reservation! Staff is amazing and accommodating.

Yelp
A magical meal! I was blown away by Spitalfields' culinary creations from start to finish. It's rare that I go to a restaurant and every dish on the menu piques my interest. Dinner kicked off with the scallops with butter and oysters on special, absolutely delicious, we debated ordering another round. Continued with the mussel risotto and beef cheek & ox tail parker house roll with bone marrow gravy - omg, so savory and packed with flavor. For mains, enjoyed the turbot on the bone which was a new experience. I heard that the lamb was the "best ever." Ended on a high note with both the cheesecake and flan-type dessert. Service was attentive although when another party showed up with an extra guest, management asked our table to move over to accommodate them which had us practically in the middle of the walkway. We obliged but it was a bit uncomfortable, especially after the makeshift divider fell with a loud bang, and nothing was offered or mentioned after. Overall, recommend when in Dublin.

Yelp
Spitalfields was a welcomed last dinner in Ireland for us. We loved the drinks and the food. The staff were welcoming and friendly with a relaxed vibe.

Yelp
A must dining experience when you're in Dublin; I'll be thinking about this meal for sometime. My husband and I were in town for our honeymoon and after reading a few blogs and the other yelp reviews we decided to try and stop in. We called over as this is primarily reservation only and a wonderful staff member was able to squeeze us in and we are seriously grateful. We were looking for a traditional Irish meal but with a little culinary flare and this hit every mark. One thing we really appreciated about the experience was the ambiance and staff. When you walk in this feels like a homey traditional Irish establishment. It's not a stuffy sit down dining experience despite the food being next level. The staff was incredible. Quick service, great cocktails, and a very kind staff member even went out of his way to give us recommendations at our next travel destination. The food is remarkable. We started with a few appetizers (Deviled Eggs, Oyster and Beef Tartar, Scallops). All were fantastic and it just kept getting better as we made our rounds. I will say I would consider this part of the meal small plate having to purchase each item individually. This is not something that deterred us personally, but worth mentioning for other diners. For the entrees we got the Cock-a-Leekie pie and it legitimately blew us away. I mean it was unreal. We paired this with the bone marrow mash potatoes and we ate every last bite. For cocktails we went with the whisky sour and espresso martini, both were great but you're in Ireland so just do the whisky, you won't regret it! Seriously I'd give this 10 stars if I could. Will absolutely be back if I have the chance.

Yelp
Genuinely one of the best meals, if not the best, I've had in years. This is a must go if you need a good date night or if you're just visiting. We ordered several plates to share and then entrees so we could try a lot of different dishes. The standout for me was the scallops. To die for! And super friendly service of course.

Yelp
Excellent meal, drinks, service and ambience. Started with the scallops, we tried 4 of the 5 entrees and tried all of the sides which were wonderful. Ended with cheesecake and eclair which were a lovely end to a meal with friends.

Yelp
This, easily, was the best meal I've had here on my trip to London/Ireland. They do everything right here. Super friendly, attentive staff, superb food. excellent location and atmosphere. One of the best restaurants I've ever been to, hands down. Michelin listed, this place sits in a corner spot a bit of a walk away from all the hustle and bustle of Grafton. You have to book reservations if you want get a seat. And that's a good thing thing as the restaurant doesn't seem crowded or overbooked. If I had to describe it, it has the comfort and atmosphere of your neighborhood pub, but with fine dining sophistication. Got seated at the bar, which gave us front row interaction with one of the coolest bartenders I've ever met (unfortunately, I forgot to get his name, but he's the friendly, gregarious gent with a beard). Great attitude and he was nice enough to engage in conversation about everything, from best whiskey spots in the city to even Conor McGregor (he's not as well liked here as one might think). Ordered the following: - Hand Dived Scallop - 5/5: buttery, perfectly cooked, large...so good! - Beef Cheek and Oxtail Roll - 5/5: another superb dish. Dough was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The meat filling was full of flavor. Came with a bone marrow gravy that took the flavor profile over the top. - Potato Gnocchi: 5/5. Gnocchi was large and had a nice texture. Venison was super flavorful and not gamey at all. Very filling and deserving of a main event meal. - Burnt Basque Cheesecake - 5/5: perfect ending. Cheesecake was rich and not as dense as your run-of-the-mill cheesecake. Had a silky texture to it that melted in your mouth. You can obviously tell everything here is made with care and expertise; they are dead serious about your customer and dining experience. All the staff are engaging, friendly and there's a real relaxed atmosphere here. Thanks again for making this last meal in your country one of my most memorable!

Yelp
One of my favorite meals of our Ireland trip. I made our reservation in advance and we showed up on time but were surprised by a friend who was in town and came to say hi. The restaurant was super gracious and invited us to stay at the bar to have a drink with our friend before they departed and we headed up to our table. Excellent wine, cocktails, and food. Everything was outstanding. The deviled eggs, bone marrow, and pork schnitzel were our favorite dishes.

Yelp
Absolutely smashing! I recently attended Spiralfields with a group of friends, it was so delicious and the service was incredible. The atmosphere felt so homie and comfortable.

Yelp
So do I order a beer or check out the fine wine list? Is it a pub? Or is it a fine dining experience? What a great find in Dublin... Bar feel, yet Michelin recognized food and a choice drink menu including excellent options from France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal! The beef cheek and ox tail roll was amazing as was the schnitzel. The baked cod was pretty good as well. Service was on point--what you would expect from fine dining. This was atypical in our experience, as most restaurants/pubs in Dublin didn't provide the best customer service. If you are on vacation or a local, this is a must try!

Yelp
Just, ridiculously good, the entire evening was made so much more special by the staff and the atmosphere. We could not have asked for better. Our waiter, Ignacio, was great. The manager, Declan, was great. The food was great - I may have had the best scallop I've ever eaten. Everyone was attentive and our party of five were thrilled with the entire experience. We had not seen one another in several years and they let us sit and talk for the longest time. Thank you all!

Yelp
There were four of us for dinner and we were a bit worn out from travel and the over indulgence of the night before. We were tired, and not too motivated to eat. But, here we are with a reservation at a well-rated place. Oh my. It was so good. All of it. The roasted cauliflower with the butter beans was my favorite. The gem salad and the roasted peppers were amazing as was the burrata. The schnitzel was quite good too. The standout was the lamb chops. My husband said it was the best he's ever had. And he's fussy. The desserts were great too. We tried the cheesecake, profiteroles, and the grilled pineapple. Service was great and the space had a great vibe. Make sure you make a reservation as this place is busy.

Yelp
Phenomenal experience! The food is extraordinary and the staff is warm, engaging and efficient. Do not miss this place!

I had the best schnitzel of my life here! The food was phenomenal and service wonderful!

Yelp
Amazing first meal in Dublin. Found this on Eater had been eagerly anticipating the oxtail bone marrow parker house roll. It was so good. The risotto was my wife's favorite. Schnitzel was crazy good as was the Irish cheddar "carbonara." This should be on your must visit list.

Alex T.

Yelp
Spitalfields is food heaven. Easily the best meal I had on a twelve-day trip to Ireland and the UK, and one of my most memorable meals of 2022. The Parker House roll, Cais Na Tire fondue, and cock-a-leekie pie were standouts. Staff were all very friendly and professional.

Yelp
Spitalfields is a delightful, clean, bright restaurant and pub near Liberty Market and Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. Loved the slow roasted duck, lentils and truffle mashed, and the Swiss Roll for dessert was literally the icing on the cake. Opened in late 2019, in a 100 year old building with improvements that look brand new. Very friendly staff. Restaurant is owned by the same folks who own the popular The Pig's Ear.
