Let's face it San Diego (/California, /the world), we're all a bit tired of the distressed wood, metal pipe, Edison bulb, canvas apron, former factory turned to eating/drinking place aesthetic. Further, we're a bit tired of 'we make our own unique (insert beer, whiskey, rum) made from the shavings of organic Atlantean unicorn flowers, aged in barrels sourced from a little known island off the coast of Tibet. Even more, we're growing a bit tired of "XYZ style" BBQ.
Can we get a clean, well lit interior?
Can we get some simple, good, local drinks?
Can we get imaginative, tasty, food not tasting like a forest fire?
Yes, yes San Diego, you can.
Wide open doors, bright, happy interior, great food selection that's with in the realm of known, but exceedingly tasty. A great house made bourbon that's approachable, great tasting and good both in a cocktail or neat.
And a staff that knows the menu, knows drinks, knows how to ask about what you might like, both stays close by, but doesn't hover.
It's a recipe for nailing exactly what we need downtown.
The pesto pizza was excellent. Often a pesto pizza can be an oily mess, or, just have no pesto taste. Storyhouse nails this one perfectly. Crispy, perfect amount of Pesto flavor.
Duck Tacos. Listen, San Diego has a thing about Tacos, where life long friends will harm eachother over the definition, classification and grading of Tacos. We're like that. Storyhouse does Duck Tacos. These are easily top 10 among the "break the norm" tacos. They're not TJ style, they're not Asian fusion style, they're not food truck style, they are just refreshingly good tacos.
It's just off the beaten path that you're not gonna get overrun by anyone on a bar crawl, and very... fun.. in side. I'd say it's a bit overlooked, and underknown. Secretly, I'd wish it stay that way, but it's too good not to share.
