Creative Japanese kitchen serving choice sushi & unusual small plates in utilitarian surrounds.
"Su-Shin Izakaya is a solid Japanese restaurant, perfect for a quick lunch or easy dinner. Sushi takes up most of the menu, and the $32 sushi/sashimi combo is a great deal. It comes with 16 pieces of sashimi, six pieces of nigiri, and a soup or salad. But we also love their tsukemono (assorted Japanese pickles), yakimatsu (sautéed mushroom and onions in a ponzu sauce), and hiyashi wakame (marinated seaweed salad). It's all reasonably priced and comes out quickly, so keep this place in mind for a Friday business lunch or casual dinner." - virginia otazo, ryan pfeffer

"Unlike other okonomiyaki in the city, Su-Shin's is less pancake-y and more cabbage-y. And that’s fine because okonomiyaki roughly translates to “grilled as you like it,” so there’s no rule that says it needs to be heavy on the batter. This one comes with thin slices of savory pork, mussels, and pickled ginger. Then it’s topped with Kewpie, tangy sauce, and smokey bonito flakes that curl over the steam rising from the crunchy cabbage. It’s a big portion that’s served with a spatula and takes up an entire plate, so wear your stretchy pants on this leg of your short Miami okonomiyaki tour. " - ryan pfeffer, virginia otazo

"Expect a friendly, “Hello! How’re you?” from the owner, Chika Abe upon arrival at this Coral Gables Japanese restaurant. The weekday lunch specials are priced at $11.95 and begin with hot miso soup, followed by six entree selections like sashimi, sautéed vegetables, fish or chicken teriyaki, sushi, yakiniku (stir fried garlic flavored beef). All dishes are served with salad, shrimp and vegetable tempura plus a California roll." - Stacy A. Moya
