I ignored the ratings since so many were late night entries. We visited at 10:15am for brunch reservations. We were politely greeted at the door by a couple of employees. We were promptly seated. As so many other reviews already mentioned, the restaurant was dirty, the chairs, tables, and basically everything were sticky, broken, dirty, and in general disrepair. After being seated, it was a pretty long wait for a server to visit our table. I can't be certain, but I believe we were the only people in the restaurant at the time. The do not sell Coke products in the home town of Coca Cola. We finally ordered. After another long wait, our food arrived. The French toast was undercooked, the basic egg breakfast was missing home fries, and the eggs benedict... well, It wasn't good.
The Sugar Factory Eggs Benedict, is an English muffin, Canadian bacon, asparagus, poached eggs, topped with hollandaise sauce. Sounds great, and it could be, but the execution was awful. Every item was overcooked. The poached eggs had solid yolks, grilled asparagus was burned, ham was hard, and the English muffin was sad, hard, and not really good at all. Our rolled silverware didn't include knives, only forks, so I had to request a knife to cut through the Canadian bacon and muffin, it was impossible with a fork alone.
The French toast was undercooked, gooey in the center, but generally ok if you're good with this. My wife didn't care for it and only ate a piece. I don't mind, and since my Benedict was underwhelming, I ate a couple pieces of her French toast.
The basic eggs meal was ok, but the eggs were overly salty. Again, not a deal breaker, but just lacking quality standards. They also were not served with home fries as advertised. When asked about there missing home fries, our server brought out 2 McDonalds looking hash browns in a bowl.
Sugar Factory clearly advertises they include a mandatory 20% service fee on all checks no matter the size of your party, so I wasn't surprised to see this included. I was surprised to see the additional recommended tip amounts were based on the total cost of our food PLUS this mandatory service charge, asking you to tip on the tip you were already forced to provide. This isn't to say anything other than pay attention to you check so you are aware of what you are spending.
I had chosen sugar factory in large part to see and maybe try one of their over the top milkshakes, but in the end decided to skip it due to the overall disappointing experience. I didn't see any reason to indulge in a $20+ milkshake that probably would have fallen as flat as the rest of our meal.
Bottom line: I bet this is a fun place for a birthday party if you're not concerned with good service, want a one of a kind milkshake or $46 cocktail bowl, and you're aware that this place isn't nearly as cool as they want to be... although it may have been at one time, or in other cities.
