Why Jersey Is the Diner Capital of the Country - Eater NY

"Summit Diner opened in 1929 or 1938, depending on sources, built by the Jerry O’Mahony Diner Company. It resembles a railroad car and is located in downtown Summit, New Jersey. It is far more cramped with only six tables and a lunch counter made of actual black marble. There was no printed menu, but a series of tack boards with moveable letters overhead. We ordered pancakes with sausages, and the fat sage-y links were fantastic. The beef in the Philly cheesesteak was tough, but the classic Taylor ham, egg, and cheese sandwich was near perfection. A cup of pleasantly understated Manhattan clam chowder came free with the cheesesteak." - Robert Sietsema

Summit Diner Review - New Jersey - New York - The Infatuation

"Summit Diner is one of the best diners in New Jersey. In other words, when you’re interested in sitting in a swivel chair, perusing an excessively long menu while sipping a mug of coffee, and ordering a huge portion of breakfast or lunch food before sticking a knife into a ketchup bottle, it’s one of the best options on earth. There are no bad seats in the rail car space, nor are there any bad dishes on the menu, but the best way to experience this Summit, New Jersey institution is to sit at the bar, and watch as they put together your Taylor Ham, egg, and cheese sandwich in front of you. photo credit: Alex Staniloff" - Matt Tervooren

We had a lovely breakfast at Summit Diner in Union, NJ! The outdoor seating was perfect, great weather, a charming downtown setting, and we were even able to bring our dog, which made it feel even more welcoming and relaxed. We ordered the Mexican omelette, spinach and feta omelette, French toast with bacon, pancakes and sausage, and coffee. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The ambiance is cozy and classic, just what you’d hope for from a diner experience. That said, there was only one server managing the outdoor tables, which understandably led to longer wait times. She was warm, friendly, and doing her best, but clearly overwhelmed, especially with a line of guests waiting to be seated. Having an extra server would have really improved the flow and made the experience smoother. Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit, especially with family or out-of-town guests, but try to go when you’re not in a rush. We’ll be back!

Classic diner food. Huge portions served up in a traditional diner car setting. Family owned business where they cook the food right in front of you on a griddle. This place has delicious food and old school charm. Has a lunch special for 12.75 that include a sandwich, including a gyro and a few other selections, that includes soup, fries, coleslaw, and the sandwich. Enough for two meals for me. My husband grew up in this area and this is one of his favorite local breakfast places. He had bacon, eggs over easy and home fries. They kept the bacon coming. I estimated they fed him a pound of bacon (don't judge). Can't wait to return for breakfast or lunch.

Food was really good. Simple menu and easy to choose. Home fries were my favorite, and even the toast was excellent. The server was very attentive and all the staff we interacted with was kind and patient. Loved this place and will be coming back

Very accommodating. I do not recommend the Turkey Ruben or the fries. The Greek Salad with grilled chicken I was told was "good". It looked good too.

The Summit Diner located right along Summit Avenue is an amazing place to eat. With convenient parking around town this place should be no problem to get to. I visited today with a buddy of mine at around 3:00pm, just an hour before closing. By this time the place was pretty empty so our server welcomed us in and had us sitting down to eat immediately. She took our orders quick and brought us our drinks even quicker. She was very kind and attentive the whole time and that really enhanced our experience. I had been here a few times, and have always loved the Taylor ham and egg sandwich they make, so I got that while my buddy got some pancakes and fries. As we waited for the food, which was not long mind you, we got to appreciate the interior of the diner. Surrounding us was beautiful mahogany wood paneling, classic diner booths, countertops, and original menu signage! When the food arrived my sandwich was gone before it hit the table and my buddy might as well have been missing the way he was lost in those pancakes. So while he finished his food I got to meet the owner, Jimmy, and inquired about the history of the place. He was very kind and open to talking to me about just how much the diner had been taken care of, explaining just how much of the place has remained unchanged, and it was a lot! It was clear in the way he spoke that he really cared about the place. Our conversation was short lived as he had to take a phone call, but it was a real pleasure all the same. By the time we were done speaking my friend was in his seat with an empty plate of pancakes and just enough fries for us to take home. We had a real great time and I definitely plan on coming back again. A note to anyone whos coming for the first time this place is CASH ONLY. That's tips AND food, so come prepared.

“A wonder old-school diner experience that feels like stepping into a time machine! The food was incredibly fresh, and the home fries were absolutely perfect—crispy, not burnt or soggy. A true classic spot for comfort food done right!”

Google
We came out here looking for a cool old factory built diner, and this is nothing but. The current building was built in 1938 and looks fantastic inside and out. Prices would be reasonable at most places but maybe a bit expensive for diner food, however the portion sizes make up for it. We were, however, asked to leave before we were finished with our food as we were told that the restaurant was filling up and the two of us were shouldn’t be occupying a booth (although the manager did say that he told us to sit at the counter earlier.)

Google
This is the last outpost of American sanity. A stainless steel railcar squatting proudly on the cracked pavement of Springfield, New Jersey—The Summit Diner. Five stars, no hesitation. If you’re looking for WiFi or vegan hash, keep driving until you hit Brooklyn. But if you’re chasing the ghost of real breakfast—eggs, toast, coffee black as Nixon’s soul—this is your holy land. You slide into one of those small vinyl booths, knees brushing the formica, or plant yourself on a barstool that hasn’t moved since Eisenhower was in office. No QR codes. No robots. No grinning 23-year-olds asking how your “food journey” is going. Just a crew of hardened breakfast professionals who know exactly what the hell they’re doing. China plates. Real silverware. The clatter and clang of a kitchen that means business. The eggs come out hot and fast, the sausage arrives still linked like a chain gang marching out of a cast-iron skillet—browned, blistered, and unapologetically pork. Home fries don’t need explaining. Toast is toast. Coffee is coffee. God bless it all. No substitutions. No nonsense. And for the love of all that is good and greasy, bring cash. This place doesn’t play the plastic game. It’s not retro—it never changed. This is America the way it was meant to be: loud, fast, honest, and caffeinated. Get there early, tip heavy, and pray they never go out of business.

Yelp
This was a very small, classic diner with the menu on the walls. There were five or six tables as well a bunch of counter seats. The service was friendly while the food came out very quickly. They also only accepted cash. I had two dishes here, three pancakes with sausage and a Western omelet. The omelet also contained home fries. The chef also gave additional home fries to us, which was nice to see. They were crispy with just enough flavor. The pancakes were large while being very flavorful and light. The sausage were two thick links, and they were cooked appropriately. The omelet was great, plenty of each topping especially the cheese so it did not dry out. It was an all-around fulfilling and hearty meal. Will I go back? Easily.

Yelp
My grandfather was Greek - sailed the sea from Piraeus to Ellis Island to become the Banana King of New Jersey around the time of the Depression. I booked 10 days in Crete some years ago. Now at that time, as now, I lived up the street from the Summit Diner. I began stopping by and trying to practice my freshly learned Greek as a friendly lark. I stopped going. Quickly. So now it's a Sunday morning in October not long after 6:30 am. It's still dark, dreary, dirty and dingy. It had maybe five people in it, including for a brief stop by, a Summit Police officer. Them, I like. Vastly unappreciated. So I take a seat at the Summit Diner in one of the dirty booths. Racking my brain: why did I stop coming here years ago? Well it didn't take long to be reminded. As I unstuck my unsuspecting forearms from the sticky table, I tried moving the table a pinch for room. Bolted to the floor. Then the stench of fresh cigarette smoke struck me - didn't see anyone smoking so it was probably in back. You have to be kidding me. Cash only - forgot that. Always sketchy. And apparently they fired all their waitresses to save more money along with the money "saved" in a cash only business and now you have to scan a QR code for the menu. So there I sat. Finally one of the guys behind the counter snarled "where's the rest of your party?" Instantly memories came flooding back: the nasty, confrontational attitude; the surely disregard and so on. Then I realized that I had in fact heard him right the first time when I sat down. It was such an odd question at shortly after 6:30 am in an empty Sunday morning town. I thought I hadn't heard him right. But I did. He was aggravated I violated a rule that appears nowhere in writing or common courtesy and common sense. Earlier after I walked in, as soon as I sat down out of the corner of my eye I saw him walk past and then out of sight behind the section behind me. I thought I heard a snarling impatient "where's the rest of your party!?" Now I was confronted again. Are you kidding me? A brief exchange transpired and I walked out never to return. Why was I aggravated when I subconsciously knew I'd experienced something disappointing or worse? We hope things change. They don't. The place is actually dirtier than I recall but the abusive, arrogant nonsense apparently hasn't been lessened by time. Perhaps it's worse. For a review of the far more pleasant diner steps away in the same town, check my reviews. Complete opposite.

Yelp
So, I saw this Instigram post of the "Top 5 New Jersey Diners" and Summit Diner was number 1. The reviewer commented that it has been #1 several years in a row, so naturally I had to try it out. So glad I did. It's a small "old school" building of the '40's style diner. Wood paneling. Maybe a dozen booths or so. A persistent line to get in. But well worth the wait. This being my first time here, I felt compelled to get my standard diner breakfast: 2 eggs over medium, hash browns, bacon-medium well done, rye toast. Simply stated: Perfect. I'm already planning on going back to try more of their classic platters.

Yelp
Cash only!! I think this may be my new fav NJ diner! Such a charming ambiance, kind service and DELICIOUS food. I loved the soft and fluffy texture of the spinach and feta omelette and the hash browns were great. So excited to come back and try the pancakes x

Yelp
Was looking for lunch in the area, and decided to try out this Diner. Its a cool old school small place. Felt like it was from the 50s. Its a very limited menu consisting of fairly basic options. Ordered a taylor ham egg cheese sandwich, which was satisfying. Prices are really reasonable. Metered Street parking only.

Yelp
Classic original NJ diner. They've definitely changed their menu to keep up with demands. My egg white omelette was fantastic as were the well done potatoes. Pancakes were perfect. And the Taylor ham, egg and cheese was classic. Service was friendly and the atmosphere was nostalgic.

Yelp
I have visited Summit Diner several times since my original review. It is not exactly close to me, so I generally have to make a special trip but you know what? It's totally worth it. As neighborhoods change and attempt to recover from the pandemic, it is great to see certain businesses still remain as they have for decades! Summit Diner is one of them. This Old Skool train car diner sits on a corner and looks like something out of a movie. It is a bit worn but that is part of its beauty and I love dining inside. On my most recent visit I sat at the counter right behind the grille. I confess part of the fun of my visit was just watching the chef cook at the grille the entire time I was there. A giant, neatly organized pile of hash browns, perfectly cooked breakfast sausages waiting to be served and order after order of Taylor Ham sandwiches and Pancakes went flying across the counter in the half hour I was there. During my most recent visit I decided to forgo my usual omelette and instead got two eggs over easy, hash browns, breakfast sausages and rye toast with a coffee. Everything was perfect. The eggs were perfectly cooked so the yolk was warm but runny (perfect on toast!). The hash browns had a nice, brown crust layer on top and the breakfast sausages had a perfect "snap" to them as you bit into them. The toast was browned and buttered perfectly. That may sound like an odd thing to point out, but I will tell you there are many times I have gotten toast at diners and you can barely tell it was toasted and the butter is barely melted. Not so here, the meal was perfect! Service is excellent with a lot of the customers already familiar with the staff. I heard many customers being greeted by first name and some friendly banter about topics like work and family. It really added to the comfortable ambience of the diner. I love Summit Diner and highly recommend it to anyone who wants a good meal in a classic environment!

Tommy D.

Yelp
Guys, it's not that good. Nostalgia feel, yes - especially when you're inside the actual diner and not sitting outside. Aside from that, the biscuits and gravy are clearly made from a packet and so was the eggs Benedict. I had high hopes but this one was subpar, even as far as classic Jersey diners go. Service was friendly and quick, so at least that was a plus.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
The ambiance is that of an old style diner. I ordered the lunch special gyro with French fries, and chicken rice soup and coffee. The portion of fries was very small and not typical of a diner. The gyro was eh and missing onions. The soup was so hot I burned my mouth. When I walked in there was no mention if it was table service or not. I stood there for a good 5 minutes and had to ask. The service was also not that good. Took forever to order. And I had to track down the waitress for a refill to my coffee, also not typical of a diner. And getting my check was just as bad. I won't be back. I have 2 stars instead of one because the food was edible. There are so many places to eat in Summit and this is not one of them. Enter at your own risk.

Yelp
Jersey is the diner capital and Summit Diner is one of the OGs. This place has everything you want in a diner. Their breakfast is probably what you will come here for. Their most popular item is their breakfast sandwiches - the pork roll (Taylor ham) egg and cheese in particular. However their pancakes are tasty and take up the whole plate. And just in regular diner fashion, they have lunch and dinner items and the coffee always flows. The place itself is old school, a very cool reminder of what places used to look like. They have a couple of booths and counter seats. Worth coming here for that alone. Come early though, I've seen it get packed fast. If you only had 1-2 diners to check out in New Jersey, Summit diner makes a strong contention to being on that list.

Yelp
Crazy busy and very hectic diner which is just a sign that it's good. The cook who served us was a man a few words but was so busy cooking, too. We got our order of BLT & an omelette rather quickly and it was good. Nothing exceptional but good diner food. It was quite crowded, waitresses running in & out and lots of chaos but yet again a very busy diner in town so that is expected although if you want a calmer, quieter meal then this is not your place.

Yelp
Simple menu, to the point service, (get in eat, pay, get out). Food was quick and efficient. Not splashy, but it doesn't need to be. Been here a couple of times now. It's a very classic diner that's cash only.
google avatar

Yelp
I always enjoy going to the Summit Diner on a Monday or Sunday! It's like going back in time when things were simple and less complicated. It's cash only which adds to the atmosphere and the food is good ol American style diner food. The home fries are always golden and crispy and the omelettes delicious! The pancakes are best in the area and can't be beat especially blueberry/ chocolate combo! Recommend on the highest level. The service is extremely kind as well.

John B.

Yelp
Food was great, with the service excellent. Had their French Toast with Bacon and iced tea to drink. I live in Middlesex NJ but will make th trip to try their Crab cake Benedict.

Yelp
Great weekend brunch and local spot out in Summit. We were visiting a few friends in the area that suggested that we stop by for brunch, and it was completely worth it. Here's what you need to know: 1. Cash only, but there's a Chase across the street if that happens to be your bank. 2. Amazing portion size and pricing (perhaps some of us are too familiar with the NYC prices) 3. Limited seating indoors and outdoors but the tables move pretty quickly 4. Pretty quick service. If you want to be in and out, that's totally possible. 5. In the center of the downtown area, so there are a few things to do to walk off the post-brunch coma. Totally worth a visit if you're out in Summit or passing by and need a snack.

Jeremy L.

Yelp
Nice service, old fashioned looking, great food and price is right. Love their corned beef hash~

Yelp
Decided to try this town staple and honestly, I couldn't tell you about the food or service outside of what I would assume is the owner running the cash register. I walk inside to ask the wait for table of two and he asks me if I'm on a line outside - I look outside and it's a group of friends waiting for a table, that's it. No signage, no line, nothing. I turn to him with a baffled face and he states, "That'll be a good place to start." Excuse me? So, if you're in the mood to be treated horribly and spoken to like you're a child by the man running the cash register, make your way here and in response to the prick, conduct yourself with a little more respect, "That would be a good place to start." Oh, and bring cash - seems like they're in the evading credit card fees stage. Ouch.

Yelp
So I'm looking forward to a Taylor Ham Sandwich....the staple for a delicious NJ breakfast. Now here's the deal, I've eaten at this little gem of a diner many times, so you could say I'm more than a first time diner, I mean come on, I even knew they take cash only. I walk in and am greeted by a dark haired guy behind the counter that looked like a bulldog with a mouthful of wasps. About 1/2 as friendly as the meanest sumbitch you ever met. Clearly I am now his primary pain in the ass. He walks over drooling his pent up anger mixed with an abundance of Jersey attitude and takes my order. Guido walks up to the griddle and slaps his meat down....2 minutes later I get two pieces of bread with 3 pieces of griddle warmed ham that was drooling griddle grease on the plate. No cheese, no eggs, definitely not a Taylor Ham Sandwich. The Latino cook (should be the only cook) tries to make it right, but slapping two slices of cold American cheese won't cut the mustard. Here's the deal, if you are gonna run a restaurant in NJ and house it in an iconic structure on the perfect street corner, when you go in to work leave your shitty attitude at your dingy one bedroom apartment that you've been relegated to since your wife dumped your ass for a dude that actually treats her right.

Yelp
As I stepped into Summit Diner, I realized just how well liked the place was. For starters, it was jam packed, as I almost couldn't find a place to seat two people. Luckily, I found a spot at the counter. Aside from that, even though it was small, it had such a bustling atmosphere. You can tell every worker was doing their best to do their job to the fullest. And all the customers were glad to contribute to the happy banter. The only downside to the place was that they don't offer milkshakes. When ordering, the server was so charming he convinced me, against my better judgement, to get chocolate milk, even though I'm not a big fan. Regardless of whether or not I liked the chocolate milk or not, the fact that he convinced me to order it speaks volumes to the immediate trust you build with the people there, leading you to trust and regard their opinion. Anyways, while I don't like chocolate milk, I am a big fan of French toast, and theirs was pretty savory. Keep in mind, this place is not a walk around the corner. Still, I would be happy to go back just for the service.

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE! Summit diner is one of those throwbacks. Looks like an old cable car. Inside hasn't changed in 50 years. The breakfasts are incredible. Today I had Two eggs over easy with ham and home fries. The ham is something special. Carved off a large ham and then caramelized on the griddle. Delicious! If on the go try their Taylor Ham , egg and cheese on a roll. Everything is great .

Yelp
Great little diner. Food is prepared fresh and quick. Always fun to watch the cooks behind the grill. French toast is simple yet perfect. Sausage is cooked to perfection. Eggs are always a win. Great coffee too.

Yelp
Nestled in the quaint town of Summit, New Jersey, the Summit Diner stands as an emblem of a bygone era and a testament to the timeless allure of classic American comfort food. This historic establishment, reputed as one of the oldest diners in the state, serves up hearty fare, delivers warm and amicable service, and offers an ambiance that takes you on a nostalgic journey back in time. Walking into Summit Diner feels like stepping into a time capsule, thanks to its vintage decor and classic diner setup. Housed in a polished, stainless steel structure, the diner features a characteristic long counter flanked by revolving stools and booth seating that extends along its window-lined wall. The interior, adorned with period-appropriate memorabilia and black-and-white photographs, sets the stage for the retro dining experience that awaits you. The decor and seating arrangement foster a sense of camaraderie and community that is quintessentially diner-esque. No matter where you sit, you have a clear view of the bustling kitchen, providing an intimate glimpse into the culinary happenings behind the counter. The ambiance is unpretentious, cozy, and resoundingly American, inviting patrons of all ages to partake in a shared dining experience. At Summit Diner, the service is as welcoming as the ambiance. The staff is cordial, attentive, and remarkably efficient - managing to maintain a brisk service pace without making patrons feel rushed. Servers glide seamlessly between tables and the counter, refilling coffee mugs, taking orders, and delivering food with practiced ease. The friendly banter between the staff and regulars testifies to the warm relationships that the diner has fostered over the years. However, it's the food that truly encapsulates the charm of Summit Diner. The menu is a tribute to classic American diner fare, offering a range of comfort food that's familiar, satisfying, and utterly delicious. The 'Summit Slider,' their signature dish, is a must-try. This classic slider comprises a juicy griddled burger topped with grilled onions and cheese, served on a soft, fresh bun. The burger is perfectly seasoned, and the melty cheese complements the savory patty, making for a delightful mouthful. Another standout is the 'Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese Sandwich,' a New Jersey classic. The thick-cut Taylor ham, cooked to a perfect crisp, layered with a fried egg and cheese on a Kaiser roll, offers a satisfying balance of flavors and textures. Pancake enthusiasts shouldn't miss the 'Blueberry Pancakes.' These fluffy, golden-brown pancakes dotted with fresh blueberries and served with a generous drizzle of maple syrup are a heavenly treat that will leave you longing for more. The 'Chili Cheese Dog' is another popular choice, featuring a juicy hot dog smothered with tangy chili and melted cheese. It's messy, indulgent, and every bit as delicious as it sounds. To round off your meal, opt for their homemade pies. The 'Apple Pie,' served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, is an endearing nod to American dessert tradition. Summit Diner offers a dining experience steeped in nostalgia and warmth. The ambiance is reminiscent of simpler times, the service is congenial, and the food is comforting and delicious. It embodies the very essence of what a diner should be - a place where patrons feel at home, where the coffee is always fresh, and where the food is served with a side of smiles. Summit Diner is indeed a charming culinary landmark that continues to delight patrons with its timeless appeal.

Yelp
Today Sunday 22, 2023 about 11.50 am I asked a Waitress if I can be served outside at the tables for breakfast, she said " Not Today", I went to another restaurant. After I finished I was passing again Summit Diner and I saw people sitting down at the tables eating. I don't know what to call this kind of service, to me is discrimination. Next time I will talk to the owner.

Yelp
I have been trying to try the Summit Diner for quite some time now but have never been successful. Luckily this weekend, I was finally able to experience it I was nervous when my husband asked if I wanted to go because a Saturday morning at a diner - sounds like a nightmare and wait - but much to my surprise, we were seated right away. Everyone told me, I had to get a breakfast sandwich - I love my taylor ham, so I did just that. I got taylor ham, egg, and cheese on a roll. My husband had the same and we split well-done hash browns. It was delicious and a typical taylor ham sandwich. The best thing about this diner is the ambiance. The diner is located in a train car, so it is long and tight. It gives you old-school diner feels or those you would see in a movie - it is adorable. I cannot wait to go back and bring my nephew - as a train-loving little boy, he is going to LOVE this place.

Yelp
was around the area and we hadn't dined inside a restaurant for awhile. we probably order too much food to be sitting on the counter. we should have sat at a table but all the tables were full. we shared an order of pancakes, Mexican omelette, bacon with eggs and biscuits and gravy. every was for around $40 not bad considering we ordered 4 dishes. would come back if around there area. I think it's cash only.

Yelp
We are new to the area and we decided to stop by to give the diner a try for breakfast. For a weekday morning, we were quite surprised with how busy it was. We were able to get a table outside without any issue. Both my wife and myself got the veggie omelet and I got a side of bacon. Overall, I would say the meal was very average at best. The omelet was really bland and didn't have any flavor. I couldn't really tell I was even eating eggs. The portion sizes are definitely very big, which is a big plus. I would give them another try to try the pancakes or french toast. It is a cool atmosphere eating in the old rail car style diner.

Yelp
Perfect patty melt. Nearly inedible fatty roast beef sandwich. Counter prep guy loves to bang plates and talk louder than a small space can handle. Unpleasantly noisy. Amazing, unique atmosphere. Wonderful waitstaff. I'm coming back but sitting at the other end and not letting anyone order a deli sandwich in a diner. Recommend!

Josie G.

Yelp
If you want an ultimate Jersey diner experience, this place is it! It is quite small but that's the fun if it! It is very 1950s style but has been renovated. All the staff was super welcoming. The taylor, ham, egg and cheese sandwich on a roll is so delicious. My waitress was super sweet when my family and I were anxious about where we could park for free when the original parking we had was a strict 30 minutes. Also been going here since I was a child (now in my 30s) and I was excited to see that they help out the community for those who are hungry but cannot afford! Only cons are that they are cash only and that their coffee is sort of weak.

Yelp
definition of a classic diner. Breakfast is delicious and the people are wonderful. you may have to wait a little bit on Sunday mornings but it's worth it

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick breakfast before a hike. I was surprised to see it's a small, old fashioned diner! Not fancy at all but so cute! No hand held menus available but the menu was on the wall above the kitchen area. I must say that I absolutely loved everything! I ordered a bacon and cheese omelette. It was packed with bacon and cheese. So juicy! Hash browns were excellent as well! I had a pancake too and it did not disappoint! Coffee very tasty! Portions were plentiful, bathrooms clean, service friendly and efficient, and prices good. What more could I want? I will definitely be visiting this diner again. This was one of my best breakfast experiences!

Gillian M.

Yelp
Small space, but friendly and somehow still comfortable. Sat in front of the grill so I got to have breakfast and a show! Really cool to watch.

Yelp
If you have never been to the Summit Diner, consider yourself one of the lucky ones. It's not worth your time and effort. I total disappointment.

Great prices, fast service, always good quality food. Can be a bit of a wait in the weekends but it's worth it!

Yelp
The Summit Diner is one of the few remaining original classic Diners serving large portions of very good traditional diner food. Focus is really on breakfast, especially their NJ iconic Taylor ham, egg and cheese on a roll sandwich, all served in the ambiance of an era gone by. While outside dining is available in the warmer months, I recommend sitting at the counter to truly experience the sights, sounds and aromas in what can only be found in a Jersey diner. Note: they only accept cash.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast during the week around 7:30 and they were already quite busy but we had no trouble getting a table for two outside. I love diners and the old train car feel. Unfortunately the food was very lack luster, below average. I ordered the veggie omelet with swiss cheese, wheat toast and french fries. I liked the french fries. The omelet was bland, not seasoned at all and couldn't taste the vegetables. I also thought it was pretty expensive; more than the surrounding breakfast places. I would come back to try pancakes/ french toast or for lunch.

Yelp
Just what one would expect from a diner. Small cozy place, with plenty of bar tops, some booths, and outdoor seating. Busy on July 4th, but wait was at most 10 min. Service was very friendly. Food was expectedly homey, greasy, and generously portioned - basically the perfect hangover food. Coffee was actually great, very smooth without the burnt taste I associate with cheap coffee. It is cash only, but the price can't be beat. Average of $15 including tax and tip, and I was stuffed! Also, there's a Chase bank across the street, or Bank of America 2 blocks away to get cash from. Walking distance from Summit Station with NJ Transit, or metered parking for up to 90min.

Yelp
Awesome place for good old fashion Breakfast. We sat at the counter and got to watch the prep of the food. Cooks were super friendly and extremely attentive. Food was just like a good old fashion diner. Definitely a must try when in Summit, NJ

Yelp
Cute vintage diner. Food and prices were very good. Had Taylor Ham, Eggs and cheese on their soft rolls. Should have had a side of home fries, they looked delicious on someone else's plate. :)

Yelp
The Diner was small and cute. Food did not take long to arrive. The waitress was very attentive and friendly. Food was really good and affordable for the amount food we were served. Downside: does not accept card and it was really cold inside the restaurant. Not a lot of turkey options, only turkey sausage. Covid precautions were taken and only a certain amount people are allowed in the restaurant.

Yelp
Te Summit Diner is one of the most iconic and well known diners in New Jersey. It's been featured on several best diner lists and even ranked in many national lists. I'm surprised it's taken me this long to get there. I was in Summit for the day and decided to stop at the Summit Diner. tmosphere: You can't get a more perfect old school, retro diner. It sticks out on the main street of Summit. The entire town of Summit is a cute downtown and the Summit Diner looks like a blast from the past sitting on the main street. You can't miss it. The inside of the Summit Diner has about 8 booths and 15 bar stools. I chose a bar stool right in front of the register. Coffee: The Summit Diner coffee tasted good. Since it's a low key, no-frills diner, the coffee was similar. It got the job done. Food: The Summit Diner menu is written on the top of the diner. You can read it all while sitting. Since the Summit Diner is known for their great food, I had no idea what I wanted to order. I was between breakfast and ultimately decided to order their greek salad wrap lunch special. The Summit Diner lunch specials came with soup and I chose Clam Chowder. I like Manhatten Clam Chowder and it was better than most diner soups I've had. The Manhatten Clam Chowder had a nice kick to it. My lunch special also came with french fries which I didn't realize. The Greek Salad wrap tasted good and I have no complaints. There was plenty of actual salad and it was wrapped in a way I could eat it. Wraps are often hard to eat but the wrap at the Summit Diner was wrapped perfectly so it wasn't messy. The french fries tasted good and they were crispy but not overly crispy. In all, my meal at the Summit Diner was great and I was happy with it. Service: You have the choice to either sit in or to go and it appears the Summit Diner does about half of each.  The man who took my order looked to be a manager. He was friendly and my food came out within 15 minutes. Overall Thoughts/Would I Go Back? I liked the Summit Diner and I can see why it's considered one of the best diners in the state. It's definitely one of my more favorite diners.

Yelp
Summit Diner is an old school boxcar diner that is definitely charming. They must be doing something right to still be in business while being surrounded by all the choices in downtown Summit. The vegetable omelette was surprisingly one of the best I've had, and I think it was because of the simple addition of gooey american cheese in the middle. The omelette was packed with mushrooms, spinach, broccoli, and other veggies. The hash browns that came with the dish were not great and tasted a bit like bacon. Being vegetarian this was a bit off-putting. The kids had mickey mouse pancakes which were also pretty good. Wish they had the option to add on blueberries or something. My husband had the eggs over easy and thought they were OK. The veggie omelette was clearly the winner!

Yelp
There's a reason they close early, because they can. When you sell out of your specials and your soups are sold out right after the lunch rush, you know that the food here is the genuine real deal of home cooking. Make sure you have cash no credit is excepted, but these are people that I've been around and if you make yourself a regular did the kind of people that you could say I'll pay it tomorrow and it'll be OK. Every town needs a diner like this you're the best enjoy

Yelp
It might have diner in the name, but this isn't much of a diner by Jersey standards. The menu is limited, but everything the do sell is pretty good. Breakfast is what the do best. The place is tiny so you might have to wait, but you'll enjoy the food. Overall solid.

Yelp
Sat down right away on a Sunday afternoon; service was fast and friendly; standard offerings; everything was reasonably priced. Five stars for these attributes alone, because this is everything you have come to expect from a Jersey Diner, but the cherry on top: this was some of the best diner French toast I've ever had. Super thick and eggy, perfect amount of cinnamon and raisins. Will be back!

Yelp
I have lived in Chatham for about 20 years, and this is the first time I have actually gone into the Summit Diner. I can't believe what I have been missing. This is the epitome of the Jersey diner! To say it is vintage would be an exaggeration! It's like an original! So the quaint vibe of this place was only a fraction of why it was such a great place. The food was EXCELLENT, and service was with a smile. Not just a "I have to smile because I work here" smile, but a smile that said "I am happy to take your order and make you feel right at home". We had breakfast - he had an omelet and I had corned beef hash. Both breakfasts were great - and they even had GOOD rye bread for toast - not the fake stuff that most diners seem to have. Coffee was good, and it was just fun sitting there watching the interactions of the folks who work there with the customers who clearly spend many mornings there. We'll be back. Perhaps we will try lunch or dinner next time - everything sounded good!

Yelp
Fun place to go. Good food at reasonable prices as is typical in a diner. Waitress was excellent and our food appeared very quickly after we ordered it. My husband had eggs, hash browns, sausage and toast and I had pancakes and bacon. My husband was sorry he forgot to ask for the hash browns to be extra crispy and said his food was good. I loved the three pancakes and bacon the first time and the left-overs for two more days. Parking was difficult so we will probably try a different diner the next time we are in town but we did have an enjoyable meal.
