Chef Marc Zimmerman Launches His Steakhouse Comeback | Eater SF

"Opening Friday, July 18 at 545 Mission Street, Chef Marc Zimmerman’s Superprime Steakhouse marks his return to a steak-focused menu in the space previously occupied by his 2023 Japanese-inspired listening bar Yokai; the new menu promises to retain a few Yokai favorites — including the uni toast, signature skewers, and Hokkaido-style milk buns — while offering hefty steaks such as a 2.5-pound “monster” porterhouse, dry-aged bone-in New York and filet steaks, a bone-in ribeye, various forms of wagyu, raw items like yellowtail sashimi, and a “not steak” section that includes a burger on a Hawaiian bun, marinated duck breast, and steamed miso ling cod." - Dianne de Guzman

Amazing restaurant. Unique decor and atmosphere. Felt like a mix between a club and destination place. The service was fantastic, friendly, engaging. The food was a bit pricey but everything was well cooked, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The steak was perfectly cooked and so tasty, the sides of mashed potatoes, brussel sprouts, and beets was nice. The cocktails were very nice. The old fashioned was a bit strong but otherwise very good.

Google
Overpriced. Small portions. Had better steaks elsewhere. Beautiful place and atmosphere, good lighting, nice rugs, JBL vintage speakers and good music. Great service but was disappointed with quantity and food. Corn was too liquid and acidic. Mashed potatoes were delicious and a touch of wasabi made them interesting. Steak? Was not impressed by it. $300 for a drink, a glass of wine steak, two sides which are not for sharing due to their size, a 1.5 oz skewer of A5 chuck just to try. No salad. No desert. I find better value in other restaurants.

We came in late on a Tuesday and had the most delicious time! We were fortunate enough to run into Chef Marc and Ben, which made the evening even more special. The food was absolutely incredible—every bite was a standout. On top of that, the vibe and décor created the perfect atmosphere. A truly memorable experience from start to finish!

An exemplary culinary journey in a gorgeous exciting space - oysters and king crab to start, the dry aged filet and new york, the horseradish mashed potatoes, the chef's gift of the mochi cake, followed by two magnificent souffle masterpieces. Bravo.

My recent visit to Superprime Steakhouse was nothing short of a culinary masterpiece. From the moment we entered, the refined ambiance enveloped us, promising an exceptional dining experience. The menu showcases an impressive array of steaks, each cut more enticing than the last. I opted for the filet mignon, and it was cooked to perfection—tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. The accompanying sauces were thoughtfully crafted, enhancing the rich taste of the meat without overpowering it. Each bite was a celebration of quality and craftsmanship. We began our meal with a selection of appetizers that were truly phenomenal. Each dish was a harmonious blend of flavors, artfully presented and executed with precision. The sides were equally noteworthy, packed with vibrant flavors that complemented our steaks beautifully. To conclude our meal, we indulged in the soufflé, which was a sublime finale. Light and airy, it was the perfect sweet note to end an extraordinary evening. Our server, Rich, was a consummate professional, guiding us through an impressive wine list with expertise and care. His recommendations elevated our meal, making it even more memorable. In summary, Superprime Steakhouse is a destination for those who appreciate the finer things in life. With its exceptional cuisine, attentive service, and elegant atmosphere, it is a dining experience that lingers in the memory long after the last bite.

Google
Had the Dry Aged 18oz Bone-in New York and it was the best steak I’ve ever had! Also had the Uni Toast, mashed potatoes, Hokkaido Scallop Skewers, and the yellowtail Hamachi. All the dishes were exceptional. The Manhattan was fantastic from the bar. Great drink menu with a bunch of Japanese Whisky’s to choose from. I finished my meal with a great Japanese amaro. Great place, better people, incredible food. Eat here.

Excellent food, beverages, ambience, and service! I felt right at home in this comfortable, sleek, welcoming restaurant. There was something on the menu for everyone, vegetarians, seafood and steak lovers. Can’t wait to dine here again! ✨

When friends visiting from Serbia say they want to go to a steakhouse - in San Francisco - you die a little bit inside. So you do a little research because you know you do not want to take them to any of the “classic” steakhouses. Well, maybe John’s Grill. BUT when you see the photos of the interior and look at the menu of Superprime, you know you found something really unique. And you would be right. The host stand has two techniques turntables spinning, a wide range of amazing jazz. Japanese whiskeys dominate the bar. The smell of deliciousness permeates the room. We settled at the bar long enough to make conversation with the bartender, who is very knowledgeable, enjoying the first step of a Japanese whiskey that has been aged in a barrel that previously held an IPA, while you briefly wait for your table. You already know that you’re going to have the massive 2.5 pound monster porterhouse, and you’re going to have it with roasted bone marrow. You already know that you’re going to have the wild mushrooms with a barely poached egg. You already know that you are going to have the creamiest horseradish mashed potatoes. And of course you’re going to have the milk buns. Now Serbia has a very meat-dominated cuisine, but it’s largely pork - delicious pork, but still. They haven’t really figured out how to best showcase beef, so every steak I’ve ever had in Serbia has been truly awful. So there really wasn’t a high bar for my friends. The looks on their faces as they tasted the first bite of the dry aged deliciousness that was in front of them will stick with me forever. I’m already looking forward to the next time I come to San Francisco to eat at this fabulous restaurant.

Yelp
I was worried this was a place where people just take their clients for comped business dinners. While that may still be true, the quality of the food is still the main driver of the restaurant. One of the employees, Fabian, provided the right amount of attentiveness balanced with the right amount of leaving me alone to eat. The Yellowtail Sashimi was smooth and buttery and not overpowered by the sauce and toppings. The salad was a salad. It was advertised to be yuzu buttermilk dressing but there wasn't really any citrusy note to it. The steak was incredibly tender and the bordelaise provided extra wonderful flavor. I enjoyed every bite of it. I went with the steamed broccolini which was fine but in hindsight, I wish I'd have gotten the mashed potatoes. The Double Chocolate Mochi Cake wasn't too sweet and was a good way to end the night.

Yelp
SuperPrime absolutely blew me away! Hands down my new favorite steak spot in SF. The vibe is super inviting--chill but classy--and the staff made us feel right at home the second we walked in. The steak? PERFECTION. Cooked exactly how I like it, juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. Honestly one of those meals where you slow down because you don't want it to end. We ordered a few sides: mushrooms, mashed potatoes, broccolini... delish. The wine list is legit too, and our server hooked me up with a red wine pairing that took the whole meal to the next level. This is one of those rare places where everything just works... food, service, atmosphere. If you're a steak lover (or just love really, really good food), you need to check this place out. I'll 100% be back.

Yelp
Wow, open for 3 months and just 15 reviews?? COME ON, SAN FRANCISCO! I live in L.A. and came here on business with a couple of clients on a leap of faith that the 15 reviews before mine were legit. And legit, Superprime Steakhouse definitely is. The restaurant itself is hip and lovely with records spinning at the host desk and the cool sound comes out of some massive vintage speakers behind the cool bar. Service is super friendly and attentive if maybe a teenie tiny bit pretentious but maybe that's just me. LOL. This is a very high end steakhouse, afterall. We ordered the Hokkaido Style Milk Buns ($10) and went ahead with the Caviar Butter pour over for an extra $46. These were super decadent and delicious. I couldn't really taste the Caviar and wonder what it would have been like without the butter but it was still phenomenal. $46 for that extra bit seems a little steep to me. We also got the Uni Toast ($15 each) and these were also fantastic. We then ordered 2 skewers of wagyu as the waiter recommended. About 3 bites come on each skewer so it was perfect for us. The fattier of the two was definitely our favorite. We then shared the dry aged bone in filet as well as the dry aged bone in new york and they were wonderful. We also got the horseradish creme fraiche mashed potatoes which were outta sight (read: amazing). It is a small portion for $16 but certainly enough with all the food we ordered as advised by our helpful waiter. I recall there were just 2 dessert offerings and we went with the chocolate mochi cake that was yummy. Wine selection is good and we ordered a couple nice bottles around $150/each. Overall, this is a fantastic and rather unique steakhouse for a special occasion or a business dinner and I look forward to going back.

Yelp
I loved everything about this place besides the bathroom, but the bathroom isn't their fault as it's in a shared building. First off, the ambiance is so cute. I love the jazzy music playing, the fact that the host stand is a dj booth?! And the open kitchen where you really can see the bichotan coals being used to cook the food. We arrived when they opened, so we had the restaurant to ourselves for like 30-40min. After that, people started coming in and it was getting louder and more lively. Our server was really great, I forgot his name :( but the asian guy maybe named Anthony? He was incredily knowledgable about each dish and had great recommendations. We also learned about where the meats come from! Very special. The host was kind with a kind smile as well and when I told her we were celebrating my man's birthday, she was so quick to accomodate :) I appreciated that! Food was fantastic! What we got: *Wagyu Dumplings (Happy Hour) -- 8/10 really good sauce! *Uni Toast (one) -- BF said it was super rich *Hokkaido Style Milk Buns -- 11/10 SO GOOD. *Bluefine Tuna Tartare -- BF said it was basic lol came with nori chips! *Petite Filet 6oz. -- 10/10 I loved this one. It was cooked perfectly. *Bone-in Ribeye -- BF ordered this. It was sauce and perfectly cooked, he ate all 18oz. *Wild Mushrooms -- 10/10 I love mushrooms and thought this was cooked perfect! You get a mix of mushrooms and a nicely poached egg on top. *Creamed Corn -- 11/10 YOOO I was surprised how GOOD this one was. It didnt look like creamed corn I was used to so I was skeptical, but omg the flavor was delectable. Definitely would order again. *2 bottles of Sparkling Water -- Saratoga brand. We were celebrating my man's birthday, so for dessert they gave us a chocolate mochi cake slice with a candle on it :) The bill at the end was a little more than $400, but it was worth it. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Brought my best friend here to celebrate her birthday. Saw it was brand new steak house so wanted to give it a try. We ordered the milk buns with the caviar butter, 3 oysters, dry aged filet, bone marrow, broccolini, mashed potatoes and the creamed corn. The milk buns with caviar butter were AMAZING. At first we did not know what to expect flavorwise but these were delicious. The oysters were also great. Really good flavor and loved that we could order individually instead of a minimum of 6 like most places. The dry aged filet was great as well, tender and flavorful. Our only let down was the sides. We did not like any of the 3 that we ordered. The horseradish in the mashed potatoes was a little overpowering which was a let down because the consistency of the mash was so good. Would have preferred to not have the horseradish flavor. The broccolini seemed undercooked and nothing too special. Creamed corn was not good to us at all, we took two bites each and didn't touch the rest. As it was her birthday, they surprised her with a dessert that was delicious! Overall we had a great night. Place is very cute and loved the vibe. Staff were very friendly and helpful when it came to the menu. We would definitely come back to try some more steaks, for the milk buns and for the dessert!

Yelp
SuperPrime is where Japanese precision meets modern American steakhouse power. Located in the former YOKAI space and created by the talented team behind The Wild SF, Chef Marc Zimmerman delivers a menu that is both refined and exciting. The à la carte menu is a dream for serious food lovers, elevated yet approachable, with bold Japanese influences woven into every course. Must-try highlights: * Hamachi Crudo with yuzu kosho - clean, bright, and beautifully balanced * A5 Miyazaki Wagyu - melts like silk, finished over binchotan for that smoky umami depth * Wagyu Tartare - luxurious, layered with Japanese flavor and impeccable texture * Ribeye - perfect crust, juicy center, steakhouse perfection * Charred Shishito & Miso Eggplant - proof the sides are just as thoughtful as the mains * Japanese Milk Bread - dangerously good, especially with Wagyu tallow Please bring back the Asian rice from Gozu, that would do justice for the menu :-) The vibe? Elite. Sexy bar energy, intimate lighting, curated music, and outstanding service. Classy without being stiff. It feels like Tokyo elegance collided with San Francisco swagger, and I love it. If you're into memorable dining, premium beef, and Japanese-inspired finesse, SuperPrime sets a new standard in SF. Already a favorite, can't wait to return.

Yelp
Recently heard about Superprime Steakhouse and decided to book a reservation. My experience was lovely from the moment I sat down until dinner was completed. Service was wonderful, shout out to Shriya. My favorite items of the night included the broccolini crab salad, wild mushrooms, chocolate mochi cake, and the petite filet. All meats cooked medium rare unless you request something different. Ambiance was nice, dim but not too dark. Then again, there was plenty of light outside and I sat near a window. Prices are competitive with other nice steakhouses. They also serve wagyu, hope to try that in the future.

Yelp
Oh man, where do I begin? the food was PHENOMENAL. the wagyu steak melted in your mouth, the uni toast was delightful, the scallops ruined future scallops for me and the chocolate gluten free mochi cake was the perfect end to the meal. it wasn't just the food but the service was awesome! our server Fabian has been in the industry for quite some time and he was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. also s/o the bartender eleanor who made a perfect midori sour and japanese whiskey. overall we are definitely coming back!!!

Yelp
Meh. Milk Buns looked promising with the butter and glaze but they were burnt around the edges and dry inside. Not very milky or soft as expected. I had the burger. I know- why did I go here to have a burger but I figured since it is a highend steak house that the burger would be bomb but the bun was wrinkly and soggy and the waitress didn't ask what temp we wanted our burgers and mine was too moo'ey for my liking. I could only take few bites. All the sides were weird too and how can you a serve a burger with no fries? I want to know!!! Mash was very wasabi tasting.... Too overpowering.

Yelp
Five of us stopped in to scope out the new steakhouse in one of my favorite haunts and was delighted with excellent service, great ambience and expertly crafted food and drink and priced well considering other similar steakhouses in SF. I had a couple of reservations based on some of my hangups about steakhouses - I'm a meat purist and want my proteins unadorned (salt is OK) and I want classic sides.. you know, like a proper mashed tater without fuss. OH BOY, let me tell you, I might be a convert after we leaned in and basically ordered most of the menu. The standouts of the evening were the bone-in ribeye with la yu crunch (which is the most ethereal sauce ever), the mashed potatoes, and the blue lake beans with mushroom XO. Also in the lineup - we had the porterhouse, flatiron rossini style, roasted marrow, broccolini, creamed corn and mushrooms. On apps, we scored the uni toast (a faved carryover from their Yokai days), milk buns, oysters, tartare and butter leaf salad. All delicious on their own and basically concreted my trust that an imaginative take on the classics with complimentary additions are well worthwhile when executed by the Superprime folks. On the cocktail front, we ordered a number of them trying to work our way through the menu but my heart went to the classics, the Martini. In all 3 variations we ordered, they all had a unique footprint, but if we had to pick a daily driver, it'd be that Martini #6 - something about the sakura bitters and salt gin just does 'er as you want it (or at least like I do haha). Excited for future visits, perhaps with a little more order restraint next time... or not. Ha.

Yelp
Unbelievable! Sat at the bar since I didn't have a res, but the bartender was very charming. The bluefin carpaccio starter was unreal and the bone-in filet is possibly the best I ever had. I also happen to have literally thousands of jazz records at home, so the choice of jazz vinyl was completely on point. The Japanese spirits were delicious as part of my martini. Love this place, can't wait to return!!

Yuqian H.

Yelp
The steak and the environment is good.Service is great! Also has DJ at night! But the food price is a little bit high.

Yelp
We had a birthday dinner for a friend last night and it was absolutely fantastic! The service was more than excellent. The drinks were creative, multileveled and delicious. I had the following and all were excellent! -Espresso Martini (multileveled flavors) -Uni toast (very unusual and tasty) -Butter lettuce/Frisee' salad (sooo fresh and delicious) -Mashed Potatoes (yummy) -Wild Mushrooms (just ok) -Bone-in Ribeye (cooked to medium rare perfection with an amazing plate sauce) Friends had the petite filet (oustanding), oysters (creamy and fresh), grilled duck breast (very tender), and Baby Bok Choy (tasty), Rococo drink (super good). Lastly, the mochi chocolate cake and the coffee were absolutely divine!!! Get the coffee!!!!!

Yelp
Really great overall experience. We had the oysters, tartare and two of the wagyu skewers and had a couple of the cocktails. The Japanese theme is done well and they've worked to make everything actually delicious. The quality of staff and service was also high. It's a splurge, make no mistake, but I feel it was good value and def a great place for a date

kaitlin n.

Yelp
I went here with my coworkers after a customer meeting and had the best dinner! The vibe of this steakhouse is cozy and warm with the music from record player greeting guests once they step inside. Our waiter was super attentive and food was amazing! Definitely would come back again next time I'm in town.

Yelp
I don't think I've ever been this eager to draft a review for any place ever. It's been minutes since we got home and the wife and I been talking about what our favorite dish was. We couldn't decide on one because everything we had was (seriously) that amazing. There won't be any spoilers in this review but - personally - the dry aged bone in cut we had is/was the BEST steak I have ever had. It was on par with sashimi grade fish from Japan. Remember, I'm talking about a steak. Besides the food, the cocktails were an absolute highlight too. The ones we had definitely rival against some of the best standalone cocktail bars in the country (least the ones we've been to) Last and certainly but not the very least, a special shoutout is warranted towards Rich, who pleasantly served us from beginning to end of the adventure. Thank you! We're so lucky to live nearby to the city because it's, without question, we'll be back in no time! The fact that they've been open for just a touch over two weeks is beyond incredible - considering the fact that it was 95% packed on a Monday. Respect.

Yelp
Cocktails, service and food are top notch! Hokkaido scallops and milk buns with caviar butter pour over were delicious. Butter lettuce salad with yuzu buttermilk dressing refreshing. Enjoyed the ribeye and the A5 but my go to is the Australian wagyu tenderloin that was less rich with great flavor. Steaks perfectly grilled over wood fire. Sit at the counter to watch the calm methodical chefs prepare your meal. Sides not as good but better to save room for magical soufflé for desert.

Gelareh E.

Yelp
The food is great but unfortunatley the bill was greater. Tiny portions (even mash potato and corn sides were small) and high prices. I recommend going there with a corportate card and not your personal card.

Yelp
Superprime is my new go-to steakhouse in SF. I've always loved the sides at steakhouses and appreciate a good filet but this filet was on a whole different level. Hands down the most incredible steak I've ever had (and likely ever will). The potatoes, caviar milk buns, and bone marrow were all absolutely mouthwatering. Every bite felt special. Truly a dinner I won't soon forget. Already counting down the days until I'm back next week with friends in town!

Tim M.

Yelp
Beautiful place. Exceptional staff. Love love love the jazz. Food was not nearly as good as it should have been, given the price and the overall vibe. I've had much better steak at Mastros.

Lisa C.

Yelp
Steak cooked to actual medium-rare, decent drinks, service was excellent - highly recommend!

David ..

Yelp
Absolutely amazing!! The food, the people, the experience. Wonderful ambiance, nice and comfortable. Fabian was super nice and attentive. The wagyu is the way to go. Definitely get the oysters and scallop! Enjoy!

Carol T.

Yelp
Finally we have a great Steakhouse!!! The ambiance is sexy, the menu and service is top notch. The cuts of meat are all middle cuts, and you can taste that it is of highest quality. I love being able to eat out and feel healthy and well. So many options, I did the bordelaise and fresh horseradish and a side of the mashed potatoes. Im drooling thinking about it. Pair this with a icy cold martini and I can't think of a better evening. Ohhhh wait, plus records playing in the background. Goodybye. 10/10!!!!!!

Alex C.

Yelp
If you're after perfect service, impeccably sourced beef and an open fire, you'll find it at Superprime. The name really describes the beef, which is the top end of prime grade and hand-selected by the restaurant from their partner ranches. The drink list had a lot of range and the vinyl records playing took the experience to another level.

Olcay C.

Yelp
This is the most interesting steakhouse in SF right now. We had wagyu from an island of off Kagoshima Japan, the only place in Japan where olives are grown for olive oil. After they press the olives, they feed them to the local cows on the island. Perfection. The mashed potatoes were the best I've ever had anywhere, better than at Thomas Keller's Bouchon. The double chocolate mochi cake is dank AF and paired well with the red wine from our meal. The jazz blasting from the turntables definitely heightened our experience. Will be back

Michael P.

Yelp
What a wonderful addition! The ambiance of Yokai is still there, complete with studio-quality sound system (literally; a pair of classic JBL studio reference monitors and an equally classic Macintosh tube amp, playing archival Japanese jazz vinyl), but adding perhaps the best steak I have ever had (the bone-in ribeye, from a bespoke ranch in Australia). Great sides (mashed potatoes, green beans, corn), awesome apps (oysters to die for), and great people. Pricey, but well worth it.
